It’sreallyhardformetobelievethatthismonthmarks1 year sinceIarrivedtojoinyouinministry!Howfastthistime went!

Therearemanythingswhicharetobeexpectedwhenanew LeadPastorarrives.It’sexpectedthatsomefolkswillbe overjoyedandsome,perhaps,disappointed It’sexpected thatanewwaveofenergywillrushthroughthecongregation andit’sexpectedthattherewillbeturnoverinstaffasanew chapterofministrybegins.Thatisthestoryofevery congregationandeverypastoraltransitionthroughouttime. Onthatfront,wearenotsounique.

Whatsetsusapart,andIrealizedthatIambiasedinmy opinionofthis,istheextraordinarywillingnessofsomanyof youtostepupandstepintoreallytakeontheworkofbeing thechurch WhenItalktomycolleaguesaroundthecountry theyareabsolutelystunnedatthespeedatwhichVPCcame togethertoworkthroughanewmissionforourcongregation while,atthesametime,addressingsomeofthemajor challengesthatwehavefacedinrecentyears Wehavedone thatwithanopenness,humility,andtransparencythathas beenvaluedbysomanyofyou

Thefruitsoftheselaborsarejustintheveryearlystagesof comingintobloom.Followingaspectacular“Taste&See” eventafewweeksago,weareseeingjoy filledparticipation inournewChildren’sandYouthMinistriesthatalsoinclude manynewvolunteers Overthenextseveralweeks,manyof oursmallgroups(includingquiteafewnewones)willlaunch forthefall.WehaveaFallFestivalhostedbyourMission MinistrycominguponOctober8th!

Asweliveandworkintoournewmissionstatementofbeing“a caringfellowshipbringingChristintoourdiverse communitythroughdiscipleshipandservice”we’llstartto seeGod’svisionforourpurposehereatthecornerofChurch& Parkcometolife!

OnOctober2at10:15am,wedohavetoaddressoneofthose “expected”thingsmentionedabove.Wewillbehavinga congregationalmeetingtodissolvethepositionofAssociate PastorforSpiritualTransformationandtherelationship betweenVPCandRev Dr GlendaSimpkinsHoffman Youhave alreadyreceivedaletterfromPastorGlendabackinAugust thatexplainsthisindetail.Thesetypesofcongregational meetingsaredifficult,butnecessaryinthesensethatwehave theopportunitytoreleasePastorGlendatoGod’snextcallon herlifewithgratitudeandblessing WhenthecongregationI leftlastyeardidthisforme,Iexperiencedsuchloveandgrace eveninthemidstofsomethingthatwasreallyhard Iwant absolutelynothinglessformycolleagueasshebringsclosure toherministrywithus.Thiswillnotbealongmeeting,asitis simplyarequirementofourdenominationtoacknowledgea pastoraldeparturewithblessingandprayer Idohopethatyou willattendandthatyouwillbepartoffuturecelebrationsand expressionsofthanksgivingforPastorGlendainthecoming months.

VPCisoneofCHO’sbiggestsupportersandweworktogetheronaregular basis Infact,someoftheoriginalfoundersofCHOwereVPCmembers For overtenyears,VPChashousedtheCHOfoodpantryandclothingclosetinthe condoacrossParkStreet.CHOworkedcloselywithVPCduringtheBagsof Loveevents.WeusedtheCHOfurnituretrucktopickuplargepalletsoffood fromFoodforOthersanddrivethemtothechurchforredistribution.Overthe years,VPChasgraciouslyhostedfoodcollectionsfortheCHOfoodpantry Also,formanyyearstherehasbeenaCHOcollectionboxoutsideroom203for foodandclothingdonations.Inaddition,forcloseto15years,VPChashosted theCHOChristmaseventwhichprovidestoys,bikes,householdgoods,coats andgiftcardsforneedyfamiliesinourarea.

Duringthepastfewyears,therehasbeenlotsofconfusionand uncertaintyamongVPCmembersaboutwhotheDeaconsareandwhat theydo DuringCOVID 19,theDeaconAwarenessTeamwhichisnowpart oftheOutreachteam,wastryingtofigureoutawaytoletthe congregationknowabouttheDeaconsandouractivities.YouthSunday hadrecentlytakenplace,andwethoughtmaybewecoulddosomething similar.Afterdiscussionswiththepastorsandworshipplanning committee,wecameupwithDeaconSunday ThefirstDeaconSunday tookplaceinSeptember2021andthesecondoneoccurredjustafew weeksago.

Youspentmostofyourcareerbuildingalargefamily businesswithyourdad.Howhasyourentrepreneurial experiencehelpedyouasaDeacon?

MerrifieldandDunnLoring.CHOprovidesfood, clothing,furnitureandemergencyfinancial supportforthoseindireneed CHOhasbeen aroundfor53years,andIamthrilledtobeapart ofagreatteamofcaringpeople.

WhenIstartedworkingwithmydad,hetaughtmethatpeoplearethe mostimportantthinginanyorganization.Ilearnedthatyouneedto listentoeveryonebecausetheyhavedifferentexperiencesandmayhave ideasthatyoumightnevereventhinkof,orknowabetterwayofdoing things.Ifyouwantgreatresults,youhadbetterpayattention.Itryto leveragethatlessonwiththeDeacons.Theyareagreatbunchpeople withavarietyofperspectiveswhohaveinspiredmetolearnandgrow.
