PHOTOGRAPHY AND ARCHITECTURE This project helped me learn about the 6 Ching Principles. Which is Axis, Symmetry, Repetition/ Rhythm, Hierarchy, Datum, and Transformation. I was asked to take pictures of what reminded me of the 6 Ching Principles. This project taught me to look at everything in a little more detail by breaking them down and see what they are made of.

CARTESIAN GRID This was the most difficult projects to do out of the 4 projects. The goal in this project was to show the change from a point to a line to a plane. This is while being aware of the positive and negative spaces in the cartesian grid. My project was based on an outfit. I chose to use points to represent shoes and socks.

Lines used as the tops, bottom, and undergarments. Planes are used to show the ground and hangers. I used volume to represent the closet and the space in which you get dressed.

The axis acts as a wall between each room.

CARTESIAN GRID Threshold was my word for this project. It is a barrier space that is located for separating the volumes.

For my major layer, I chose ozone because it’s a barrier between the earth and the sun. For my human scale, I chose to do a dam because it holds water. For my micro scale, I chose to do soap bubbles because they are clean on the inside and dirty on the outside. For the models I used 5 out of 6 of Chings Principles: axis, repetition, datum, hierarchy, and transformation.

HUE SCHEME DEVELOPMENT For this project, we were to follow a certain hue scheme for a “client” living area. I had complimentary. I chose green and orangey-red. We had to think about the treatment of shades and tints, as well as tone.

This project taught me the design principle of balance. This step is usually last in the design process for interior designers.

COLOR RENDERED FLOOR PLAN In this project, we were given a floor plan. We had to trace and ink it ourselves. Then we picked samples.

There was no color hue scheme to follow this time. After those steps, we hand rendered for the first time.

URBAN ART GALLERY

This existing retail facility is being renovated for an Upscale Urban Gallery in Chicago. The gallery will feature rotating exhibits, primarily painting and sculptures. The artist I chose, Yvette Mayorga, is a female artist based in Chicago. Her work focuses on Mexico and the US. The circulation of the space is in a circular motion. There is a huge space in the middle to showcase her big scale sculpture. She has many smaller ceramics that I chose to display on pedestals. There is a 5 foot turn around in the bathroom to meet ADA standards. There are double doors that can swing both ways for easy access into the storage room. As far as materials go, I kept everything neutral so that the artwork was the primary focus. I did choose to tie in the pink for the seating.

This project allowed me to practice and expand my hand rendering skills. It taught me how to space plan.

RETAIL SHOP

This existing building is a retired fire station. It is being renovated for an outdoor shopping mall. This shop is a luxury, high-end bookstore. It has floor to ceiling book shelves. It also has book nooks for both adults and children to relax and read.

The kitchen is the heart of the Johnsons home. The command center allows their teenagers to complete their school work in the kitchen. The kitchen is modern while maintaining the function of the home. They love the view while looking out their kitchen windows. It is a large wooded area where they can see flowers blooming and animals roaming. All items in the room are designed carefully and work together to create cohesion. All the newest appliances and Calvin’s requested nugget ice maker are incorporated into the design. The kitchen design focuses on establishing an open and unobstructed flow meanwhile obtaining a functional work/preparation zone. The earthy theme carries in the kitchen with a neutral cabinetry finish mixed with wood tones. The floor offers contrast that keeps the space grounded. The peninsula and cooktop are perfectly placed where anyone can sit, work, or cook with a view. The new space, overall, feels warm and inviting.

Lauren and Calvin Johnson use their principal ensuite bath as an escape from their busy lifestyles. Everything is easy in this room. Everything is integrated. There are warm towels when getting out of their large shower. The floor is heated, as well. There are separate vanities for a seamless experience. The hardware is all gold. There are many unique, eclectic pieces in this bathroom. This high-end feel matches the rest of the home. The pastels of vanity contrast with the dark tile. There is a large mirror and plenty of space to sit to get their daughter ready for her prom one day. The bedroom has a dark moody vibe. This allows the Johnsons to fuly relax in their home.
