Throughout these projects I have developed a deeper understanding and have learned the importance of good design. Architecture has a lasting impact on a community, so it is important to design buildings that are sustainable and have a positive impact on the surrounding area.

01 CORE OF KNOWLEDGE LIBRARY Located in the Philadelphian neighborhood of Francisville, the proposed library space would become a vital nook for the surrounding community. At its core, a library is a home for information and a safe location for members of the community to gather and learn. By putting the essential books stacks as the core of the library, an emphasis is placed on the importance that they hold and the significance that access to resources has on a community. Community engagements with libraries has been linked to many positive benefits such as more productivity and longer attention spans. The circulation of this library is what sets it apart.

Long ramps and occupied stairs wrap around the structural book stacks that create an atrium in the center of the building. Along this main circulation there are lots of nooks and moments for visitors to stay to study, read a book, or relax. By partnering with the nearby schools this library would also engage the young students and encourage them to read and learn. Another component of this library is an attention paid towards the community or people who wish to commute to work. Philadelphians on average spend 52 minutes commuting to and from work but if more people were to use public transportation it could limit reduce the number of cars on the road, lower carbon emissions, and lower the amount of stress brought upon by driving. To aid this transition towards public transportation, there are Septa Kiosks located outside of the library and the lower part of the library is a lounge area where information on routes and bus stops will be posted.

Additionally, librarians will be knowledgeable about the routes in the surrounding area and how Septa works. There is also Indego bike share rack outside which gives people the opportunity to bike to work or for recreational use. This is one more way that the library is creating a positive impact on the neighborhood. On last component is that there is a café area where all are welcome to gather and grab a small snack. Overall, this library will be a great addition the Francisville area because it gives the neighborhood a place to gather that will be proactive in the community. also connect the community to nature in the very urban environment.

02 CITY UNDER THE STARS “IN MOST CITIES THE SKY LOOKS LIKE IT HAS BEEN EMPTIED OF STARS, LEAVING BEHIND A VACANT HAZE THAT MIRRORS OUR FEAR OF THE NIGHT AND RESEMBLES DARKNESS.” -VERLYN KLINKENBORG In Philadelphia, the overwhelming light pollution has created a thick divide between the earth and the stars above. This inability to stargaze and glare into the natural sky has created a great inequity among those who live within and around the city. Those who have grown up in and around Philadelphia have either rarely or never had the chance to see the stars and study them from real experience. By providing the city with a public planetarium, children in the city will have the chance to see stars and planets for themselves and spark their natural curiosity for space. Dilworth park sees its highest circulation of school children during the summer months making it the ideal time for inspiring cosmos exploration. City Under the Stars creates equity amongst those within and outside the city as all students will now have the opportunity to venture into space and explore what lies above.

04 Pyramid of peace The goal of this project is to create a house of peace that is to be utilized by the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood of Philadelphia. This house is a non-denominational chapel which is the home for the Alter of Peace by George Nakashima.

Located in Strawberry Mansion, Philadelphia, the Peace Pyramid is home to Mira Nakashima’s Altar for peace. Through triangulation this sanctuary space is able to call to mind thoughts of inner peace and is representative of the Celtic knot and its various meanings. The inverted pyramid ceiling is held up by celestial windows that let in light, while the ceiling also extends down and points towards the altar. By creating rooms of meditation and congregation this chapel would be an excellent addition to the Philadelphian community.

05 SPLIT LEVEL ROWHOME The goal of this project was to create a home for a Multi-Generational Family.

This family includes Sarah & Mike (late 30s) and their daughter Morgan (7 months). Mike’s Mom ( 70’s) also stays over to help with childcare a few times a week and needs her own space. The family values outside space to mix with neighbors allow kids to play observed on backyard and street. They also need extra bedrooms to potentially expand and grow their family Lastly, Mike wants a workshop where he can work on projects and Sarah wants a linen closet. By creating a split-level house, the rooms are given an extra degree of privacy and it makes a small rowhouse feel much longer.

06 Temple of Horus Case Study From the iconic pyramids at Giza to the lesser-known tombs and temples, ancient Egyptian architecture continues to excite and impress modern scholars and architects. The Temple of Horus, also known as the Temple at Edfu, is no exception and is a beautiful example of extraordinary Egyptian architecture. To understand the context and fully appreciate the Temple of Horus, it is important to identify certain elements of this building that can be seen in the hand drawlings and diagrams below.

07 Cabin Competition Secluded deep within the forestry of the Laurel Highland trail system lies a replica of the “Shelter for the Wanderer” cabin which was originally designed by André Hans Kubat Sarria. The duality of this cabin is vital for the Pennsylvanian wilderness. This cabin is functional as a shady retreat from the hot summer sun. It also contains an opening in the base of the cabin, which along with the cabin’s ventilation system, allows for a fire to be built within the cabin. This means it is additionally functional as a retreat from the cold, snowy Pennsylvania winters. What is also noteworthy about this cabin is that it is essentially a set of parts. It was originally a barn that was deconstructed, transported, and finally reconstructed in its current location. The sustainability and duality of this cabin all contribute to its uniqueness and beauty.
