Teapot drawings To start the drawing unit we drew an object in many different styles to understand drawings. First was a memory drawing where we drew the object without looking at it.

Then there was a blind contour where we drew the object without looking at the paper or lifting our pencil, modified contour where we could look at the paper and object but still can’t lift the pencil.

Investigation where we drew parts of the object. Orthographic where we drew the object in scale in 2D. Pure contour where we drew the object as best as we could. Section where we drew the object cut in half. Cross contour where we wrapped the object. Finally tone was we added shading to our pure contour

Box drawings To start drawing in perspective we drew a set of boxes in scale to each other. To start we drew orthographic of them in 2D then moved over to 3D. We then took the 3D drawing and added extensions to it using colors and shading to show the extension. Lastly, we shone a lamp on the boxes and did the shading

Photoshops of box drawings For this part of the project, we put our box drawings into photoshop and used the tools to enhance the drawings. The first one was a composite drawing using photoshop we layered all of our old drawings together to make one almost super drawing. The other three are simply messing around with filters to get unique drawings

Perspective Drawings of Marvin Hall For this part of the drawing unit, we used our knowledge of drawing in perspective to draw real buildings. The challenge of this project was keeping things in scale and taking such a large building and putting it on a small sheet of paper. In the end though once you get the scaling down you get some nice drawings of Marvin hall.

Adding all the details was also rewarding as you could see the drawing coming together.

The next step was shading these, shading with natural lighting is difficult as everything is technically lit up. To help with Marvin Hall this I choose one spot to be white and shaded things in relation to that, also taking a photo and making it black and white is helpful.

Inspiration

Rules And Maps

This model is based on a quilt by Mary Lee Bendolph, the quilt was a part of the Gees Bend quilts. The quilt follows a housetop pattern with a center block surrounded by strips leading up to the edges

To make the model in 3D rules had to be established for the heights of the colors, for this model heights went in order of lightest color being the shortest and darkest color being the tallest, the rules can be seen below.

A 3’’ by 10’’ section of the quilt was then selected to model.

To do this maps of the quilt were made starting with freehand, then straight lines then 90-degree angles.

This way all dimensions for pieces were known

Initial Models My first model was constructed simply by making each strip of color on the quilt be placed on stilts and connect directly to the ground

Straight Line and 90 degree Angle Trace of Quit Section My second model simplified the process by having all the strips be connected to two long walls on the end, this way not everything had to touch the ground, and the heights were also reversed

My third model emphasized the red square making them the tallest pieces and having all other pieces connect to them

For my final model, I choose to focus on the idea of the red squares being the central point. To help with this idea I edited the map of the quilt so red squares continue all the way to the edge and also made red the tallest color.

Desk after completion of model Map for Final Model Learning from my third model I made some construction changes to the final model. The first one is instead of each pillar being a piece of paper, the red pillars were simply two pieces of paper folded up like an accordion. The connecting walls were changed from individual strips to one large wall with a base that would fold over at the top and connect perfectly to the red pillars. Dimensions for all these pieces can be seen on the moleskin pages.

My final model pictures show how the model creates shadows. They also detail all the various parts of the model

Orthographic Drawings

• The next step in the process was to draft our models in 2D to scale as orthographic drawings and to also draw a version of the model cut horizontally and a version cut vertically. The drawings were then scanned and placed into photoshop to allow us to have a version with a colored background

Axonometric Drawings

• The final step of this project was to now draft the model in 3D to scale as an axonometric drawing. The drawing was then exploded to allow all the parts of the model to be shown, my drawing as seen was exploded into 3 pieces, that being the red pillars, the connecting bars, and the walls. This drawing was then sent to photoshop for color to be added and translucent connectors to show where the pieces all connect

All of the models in this project are designed to look like Tadao Andos Poly Grand theater in Shanghai China

For my final model, I kept the exact look of the building. I featured the large double circle, the circle on the roof, and the half circle entrance

How it was made

The concept of Andos building is an object with holes running through it, so to generate ideas I made three models following that concept

The model was made using one sheet of tag board. It was folded into the shape of a box with small folds at the end to add stability along with inserts to connect the roof folds. The circles are simply cut out and folded back to create platforms

Mini Models and Patterns First Attempt For my initial mini model, I took my big model and just made it smaller with no real differences. I made a few patterns with these L-shaped pods as seen below.

Second Attempt After making my patterns I realized that a lot of them involved making the L pods into full boxes so I decided to make the pod a full box. For this pattern then I simply lined the boxes in a straight line and connected them through the circles to really emphasize the circles on the pods

Initial Idea To go vertical I knew I wanted my pods to be threaded onto a piece of basswood. The basswood would then be supported on two ends by a structure suspending the pods in the air. This structure is two triangles as a triangle is a strong shape. To create variety in the vertical element of the pattern I add little nubs to the triangle allowing the bottom of the pod to rest at an angle

Final Model Upon finishing my first attempt I realized that the triangle while a strong shape did not fit with my pattern. To change this I kept the idea of a triangle but only made half of it with the angles of the triangle being the angles of the pod. This way the pods would rest on the back joint and then fall onto the angled basswood in the front

Initial Light Boxes

For this project, the idea is to take a building and outline a space from a section view of the building. With that outline space, we are supposed to transform it to create architectural space. For my project, I started out with three ideas, a morph of the shape, a rotation of the shape, and a shift of the shape. I then turned these ideas into lightboxes to see how the space would look. After making the light boxes I liked the morph the best. I made some changes from my initial idea to my final idea though. First I made it so that instead of both walls pulling out I made the left wall move in and the left side of the roof move out to where they would meet at the end. I also added a morph on the bottom so there could be a set of stairs in the space. Lastly, I stretched the whole shape to be taller allowing for the space to be larger and more open,

Finding Surfaces Once I decided on my shape and transformation I made another light box out of foam core with that transformation.

Using my new lightbox I had to think about how light will enter the box, and connect the ribs through surfaces. I thought about this like a house I drew out my surfaces in the drawing below. I wanted there to be a floor and I also knew I wanted a wall and roof on the left half. Then I would leave the left half of the upper roof open to create a skylight to allow light. I close off the right side of the roof and turn the right wall into a big window. I also wanted to add a back balcony so I folded down the cut out shape

Assembly and Kit of Parts

To finish off the project I made my model much bigger and turned the pinned-in surfaces into foam core combs. I also changed up the back balcony to where it is to loops created from the overhang. In the end, the model was almost entirely held together by the combs with the only glue being the balcony.
