Encouraging our Founder's passion for learning in New York

Greetings from Headmaster Dr. Keigo Komamura

Welcome to 24-Hour Tri-Cultural Life! ---“Keio Academy Of New York Has Never Closed Even For A Single Day” --Yukichi Fukuzawa, the founder of Keio Gijuku, the first private academic institute, was a one-of-a-kind modern Enlightenment thinker who lived through the late Edo and the Meiji periods. Not just “modern Enlightenment thinker,” he also a great educator, translator, essayist, sake lover, and entrepreneur. In any event, Fukuzawa was the man who drove Japan’s modernization through learning and education, and then fundamentally shifted the course of history. Fukuzawa left behind many notable episodes. Among them, the most famous is the story of May 15, 1868 (Keio 4). At that time, Japan was in the midst of the so-called Boshin War—the largest civil war in Japanese history, It is said that from Shiba area, where Keio Gijuku was located at the time, one could hear the cannon fire and see the rising smoke of battle as the two armies clashed in Ueno area in Edo (Tokyo). Amid the chaos sweeping through Edo, Fukuzawa calmly reassured his startled students and resolutely continued his lectures on an economics textbook written by Francis Wayland, president of Brown University. This episode later became the basis for Fukuzawa’s famous saying: “Keio has never closed a single day.” Thus, believing in the power of knowledge and learning even in times of crisis became a tradition at Keio.

Keio Academy of New York was founded in 1990 to succeed the spirit of Fukuzawa, who bridged Japanese culture and American culture. Now, more than 35 years later, the Academy wishes to incorporate another culture in addition to these two cultures. The traditions of “Keio” and the spirit of Fukuzawa as a third cultural perspective. Through the mastery of both English and Japanese languages, I would like to support young students and encourage their journey, starting from New York, will journey through Japan and spread their wings to the world, embracing the tri-culture of America, Japan, and Keio. By the way, New York City has always been a “battlefield” where hope and nope, victory and defeat, harmony and division constantly clash. Just as Fukuzawa gazed from a distance upon Ueno, I also would like to look from a distance down upon the noisy Manhattan with my students, and proudly guarding our “castle of learning” in Purchase, and then declare, “Keio Academy of New York has never closed its doors even for a single day!” like Fukuzawa once did. However, for us, Manhattan is not merely something to be viewed from a distance. I have no intention of imprisoning our students to this campus. Because I believe that our students will not lose their spirit of independence and selfrespect even when stepping onto this cultural battlefield. There are no breaks on the journey to Triculturalism. It opens 24hours a day. Every moment of student life offers an opportunity for learning.

The Mission of Keio University

“To be a constant source of honorable character and a paragon of intellect and morals and...make Keio a leader of society.” Yukichi Fukuzawa emphasized the importance of both honor and intellect in the pursuit of academic learning, and aspired to shape a personal character suitable of societal leaders. His legacy is embodied within the Mission of Keio University, which Fukuzawa left to his pupils just five years before his death. “Keio University is not merely a place for academic pursuit. Its mission is to be a constant source of honorable character and a paragon of intellect and morals for the entire nation and for each member to apply this spirit to elucidate the essence of family, society, and nation. They will not only articulate this essence in words, but also demonstrate it in their actions, and by so doing make Keio a leader of society.” It is now known as the truest purpose of Keio in its most concise form.

About Keio

Over 160 Years of Tradition and Innovation Established in 1858 by Yukichi Fukuzawa as a small school of Western learning, Keio has a history as Japan’s very first private institution of higher learning. Over 160 years since its founding, Keio has thrived under its founder’s motto of jitsugaku, or empirical science, as it continues to transform Japan as a modern nation through contributions to education, research, and medicine.

Jitsugaku ( 実学 )

03

Jitsugaku is a way of learning about the world pursued by Keio University’s founder Yukichi Fukuzawa through the application of reason, observation, and verification, and it stemmed from his desire to break free of the Confucian ideals that informed scholarship in 19 th-century Japan. Jitsugaku is science in the truest sense of the word and a powerful tool in Keio University’s never-ending search for practical solutions to real-life problems.

CULTIVATION OF BILINGUALISM

The 9 th grade curriculum includes twice as many hours of "English" classes as any other grade level to help students rapidly develop their bilingual skills. In addition, students who need additional English language instruction are required to take ESL (English as a Second Language) classes, and students who need additional Japanese language instruction are required to take JHL (Japanese as a Heritage Language) classes. Our goal is to help both students with no prior overseas experience and those with extensive overseas experience to develop their English language skills and use them as a tool. By actively engaging in assignments and making daily efforts in Japanese language classes, students will acquire the Japanese language skills necessary for a successful education at Keio University.

SERVICE LEARNING The Academy promotes service learning which is practiced at local high schools. It encourages and supports students to participate in volunteer activities for the communities. Food Drives and Toy Drives have become an annual tradition for the Academy, and donations collected are distributed to people in need. The cancer walk is another charity event students proactively participate in every year. Students are active in local events and offer support for community groups and organizations.

EXTRA HELP AND SUPPORT

There are some unique features of academic life at the Academy. Students can make appointments with teachers early in the morning before classes start, after school, and/or on the weekends to review and/or reinforce classroom content. Other means of academic support include the Peer Tutor system, in which students assist each other. “Half learning, Half teaching”, one of the traditions at Keio, means that those who learn first will teach the rest. The Founder’s Spirit is definitely being inherited here at the Academy.

CULTURAL EXCHANGE

The Cultural Exchange Committee of Student Government interacts actively with local schools throughout the year. Students observe classes and discuss cultural differences through reciprocal visits. The program enables students to understand a sense of diversity and acquire communication competence and experience.

CAREER GUIDANCE

The Academy provides Career Guidance every year. Speakers who are leaders in their professional fields share their career experiences, and this guidance helps students envision their future after graduation. Students proactively participate in the event by intently listening to the guest speakers and asking questions.

DEBATE AND SPEECH

Every Saturday in the senior years, the 11 th-grade students hold a debate, and the 12 thgrade students give speeches as an opportunity to practice their public speaking skills. The 11th-grade students work in a team to hold their position in each debate, and the 12 thgrade speech is a presentation by each student on a theme of their choice. Although the students have already given various presentations in their regular classes, they will have valuable experience presenting in front of a large group of 11 th and 12 th graders.

The Academy is the only Keio -af filiated school with dormitories. About ninety percent of its students are enrolled as boarders. Through residential life, students are challenged to manage their time and to gain independence. Boarders acquire lifetime friendships and emotional growth by living with one another. Two boarders are assigned to each room. Each of them is provided with furniture, a safety box, and internet access. Commuters are approximately ten percent of the students, and they are transported to the Academy via their district school buses or family vehicles.

Keio Academy of New York enrolls students from all over the world with diverse backgrounds, and its educational activities are based on the school's philosophy of bilingualism and triculturalism. For the school to realize this philosophy, the Admissions Office takes a multifaceted view of each applicant's experiences to maximize all applicants' individuality and characteristics. While language ability at the time of the application is an important factor, the most important is the desire and vision for the kind of high school life you want to lead. Some students want to study hard, and others want to try new extracurricular activities, and so on. The strength and depth of these feelings are the source of energy for personal growth. The stronger and deeper this energy source is, the happier the student is. At our school, we will respond to these various aspirations. Please come to Keio Academy of New York to realize the high school life of your dream. The Admissions Office is looking forward to welcoming many applicants who have their hearts set on this goal.
