Every September, we have the privilege of putting together one of the issues that means the most to us— our annual Special Needs Issue, dedicated to supporting and celebrating families raising children with unique needs.

Over the years, I have had the opportunity to meet so many incredible families through this issue. I’ve listened to parents share their stories, learned about resources I never knew existed, and been reminded again and again that parenting rarely follows a perfectly mapped-out path. Every child is different, every family is different, and every journey comes with its own challenges, joys, surprises and victories—sometimes very big ones and sometimes the quiet kind that only the people closest to them fully understand.

That idea is beautifully captured in one of this month’s features, “Celebrating the Quiet Wins of Neurodivergent Childhood,” by Shannon Dean. It’s a wonderful reminder that progress doesn’t always look the way we expect and that the moments that may seem small to someone on the outside can be absolutely huge to a child and family.

One thing I have heard repeatedly from parents over the years is just how difficult it can be to find the right resources. When you are already juggling school, work, appointments, therapies, activities and everyday family life, spending hours searching for help is the last thing you need.

That is exactly why our Special Needs Resource Directory is such an important part of this issue. Each year, we work to bring together local therapies, educational resources, recreational opportunities, support organizations and other services in one convenient place. Many of these resources have been shared with us by families themselves, while others have been researched by our team. It truly is a community effort, and we are always looking to make it better. If you know of a wonderful resource we have missed, please tell us! Your recommendation may be exactly what another family has been searching for.

We also have two more terrific features this month. “Tips for Playdates with Kids Who Have Special Needs” offers thoughtful, practical ideas for making playdates comfortable and enjoyable for everyone. I especially appreciate that it gives helpful advice for both sides of the invitation. Sometimes a little communication and understanding can make all the difference—and help lead to some pretty great friendships.

And in “The Miracle of Music: Why Children Who Make Music Thrive,” we explore the many ways music can benefit children. Whether it’s singing, banging on a drum, learning an instrument or simply finding joy in a favorite song, music has an amazing ability to connect, encourage and bring out something special in children.

I always come away from putting together this issue having learned something new, and I hope you do too. More than anything, I hope families who need these resources find something helpful within these pages—and that the rest of us come away with a little more understanding, compassion and appreciation for the wonderfully different ways children experience the world.

To the families who continue to share their experiences, recommendations and resources with us each year: thank you. Here’s to celebrating every child, every family and all those wonderfully important wins—both the big ones and the quiet ones.

Why We Must Stop Calling Children “Psychopaths”:

A Wake up Call for Parents My family is finally able to laugh about the day my brother accidentally became “the neighborhood psychopath.” He was a sweet, earnest kid who had been hired to walk two dogs and take them to a little creek in our neighborhood for an adventure. The dogs splashed, played, and enjoyed themselves to the fullest. What my sweet brother did not know was that the creek was full of thick, sticky, and impossible to remove tar.

When they finished their walk, their paws were black, their fur was matted, and they tracked tar across our neighbors’ floors like tiny four legged paintbrushes. To help the dogs and neighbors, we had to deep clean the house and shave the dogs.

Instead of seeing a child who made a mistake the neighbor, who was, heartbreakingly, a mental health counselor, told other families that my brother was a “psychopath”. He was just a twelveyear-old boy who did not have the skills necessary to understand the consequences of bringing tar into a home.

He simply thought the dogs had played in mud and could be easily cleaned.

This painful moment in our history is a window into a much bigger cultural problem: our long, harmful history of labeling children with adult criminal or psychiatric terms.

A Brief History of Calling Kids “Criminal,” “Insane,” or “Psychopathic” For generations, adults have used extreme labels to explain children’s behavior. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, children who struggled with impulse control or trauma were described as “morally insane.” By the mid 20th century, clinicians used the term “juvenile psychopath” to describe kids who were often simply neglected, abused, or developmentally delayed.

These dangerous and inaccurate labels were used to shape public perception, influence policy, and justify harsh punishment. Sadly, these misguided opinions still echo today when a frustrated adult calls a child “crazy,” “evil,” “manipulative,” or “psychopathic” for behavior that 4

Civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson has spent decades showing how society’s detrimental labels have harmed children. His work at the Equal Justice Initiative demonstrates that when we call children “criminal,” we stop seeing not only their humanity and pain, but also their potential. Stevenson reminds us that children are more than the worst thing they have ever done. Their brains are in the middle of development and lack the skills needed to make fully accurate, logical, and wise decisions.

When children make “crazy” mistakes, they do not need a detrimental diagnosis. They need us to help them learn what they should have done instead.

What Adults Should Do To Help Rather Than Harm • Build strong systems that do not reinforce “bad” behavior. So many adults assume children are being manipulative, but they are just using the strategies that worked in the past.

• Teach cause and effect gently. We need to make life a classroom, not a courtroom.

• Use accurate language. Address the behavior without attacking the child’s character.

• Model distress tolerance and emotional regulation. Children learn these skills by borrowing our calm.

• Protect their dignity. Shame never builds skills, but connection does.

When we replace labels with understanding, we raise children who feel safe enough to learn and brave enough to grow.

CCT’s 2026-2027 Season

Opening as we mark the 25 th anniversary of the terrifying September 11 attacks, CCT presents the Tony and Olivier award-winning musical Come From Away. Moments after the attacks, U.S. air space was closed. But flights headed here didn’t have enough fuel to return home safely. Mike Box directs this show by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, running September 10-20, 2026.

Next up is the classic farce Noises Off! There’s only one word for this audience favorite by Michael Frayn — sardines! On the plate, squished and sat upon in the newspaper, creating a slip hazard on stage and finally slopped unceremoniously over another actor’s head. Nedra Bloom directs Noises Off!, running November 12-22, 2026.

Gather round in January as we present Snoopy!!! — a charming musical featuring the beloved characters from the Peanuts comic strip by Charles Schulz. Running January 14-24, 2027.

Shakespeare sounds like serious theatre, but As You Like It is all for fun — a comedy classic where young lovers romp in the Forest of Arden — with mistaken identity, witty dialogue and a happy ending. Chip Goff directs this delightful piece that runs March 11-21, 2027.

Regular CCT season shows run for two four-day weekends — Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. with Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. Season tickets — which offer patrons five season shows for the price of four — are on sale now. The Hargrove Foundation is partnering with Hargrove’s Mobile office to once again hold the exciting Downtown Get Down event in Downtown Mobile, Alabama on Thursday, September 24, at the Soul Kitchen. Advice for Parenting a Special Needs Child Parenting a child with special needs can be complicated. There are appointments to schedule, therapies to coordinate, specialists to see, school concerns to address, and often a long list of recommendations to consider. On top of that, parents are frequently exposed to advice from friends, family, social media, and other sources. It can be difficult to know what information is reliable and what actually applies to your child.

This is one of the areas where your pediatrician can be helpful. We can be a sounding board and help you sort through information using medical knowledge and evidence-based recommendations.

Special needs can look very different from one child to another. Some challenges are immediately apparent, while others may not be visible to anyone outside the family. Regardless of the diagnosis or circumstances, your pediatrician should be part of your child’s medical team and

someone you feel comfortable contacting when questions arise.

Do not hesitate to bring up concerns, even if they seem minor. A problem that seems small may nonetheless require intervention, and may have a simple solution.

Sometimes addressing a concern early can prevent it from becoming a larger problem.

Your pediatrician can also help with some of the practical aspects of caring for a child with additional needs. We can help monitor development, coordinate care between specialists, provide referrals for therapy, assist with medical equipment or devices, and communicate with other members of your child’s care team when appropriate. We can also help you determine which concerns need a specialist and which can be addressed in the pediatrician’s office.

With frequent therapy appointments, specialist visits, school meetings, and the usual demands of raising children, it is easy

for parents to become overwhelmed. It is also easy to overlook your own needs.

Making time for yourself and accepting help when it is available are important.

You do not have to have every answer or manage every part of your child’s care on your own. Your pediatrician can help you navigate the medical system, answer questions, and work with you to determine what your child needs.

If something is making your child’s care more difficult, bring it up at the next visit—or call the office. Sometimes the solution is simpler than you expect.

Marci Taylor Indian Springs School

With 21 years dedicated to education, Mrs. Marci Taylor proudly serves as the OMI Building-Based Math Coach at Indian Springs Elementary. In this role, she supports both teachers and students across all grade levels, from kindergarten through fifth grade. “ I love math because there are multiple entry points, and we all process and make sense of mathematics differently,” she shared. “Helping students and teachers discover confidence in math is what continues to inspire me every day.”

Mrs. Taylor earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Elementary Education from the University of Mobile. She later earned an Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in Elementary Education, as well as a Master of Education in Instructional Leadership (PK–12), from the University of West Alabama.

“I was inspired to become an educator because teaching has always been a part of who I am,” Mrs. Taylor explained. “My mother spent time teaching me at home, showing me the power of patience, encouragement, and helping others learn. Those early experiences shaped my passion for education and my desire to make a difference in the lives of all students.”

Mrs. Taylor’s mother has been her greatest influence throughout her teaching career. When her mother passed away in December 2025, it became a

difficult season as Mrs. Taylor navigated her grief while continuing to show up for the teachers and students she serves.

“My mom taught me the importance of dedication, perseverance, and always giving my best.

The commitment she showed in everything she did continues to inspire me. I strive to carry that same work ethic and continue showing up for others, even during life’s most difficult moments,” she shared.

Grateful to be nominated as the MBP Teacher of the Month, Mrs. Taylor describes the recognition as a reminder that the work she does each day for teachers and students is making a lifelong difference.

“I dare not take credit for something I didn’t do or for the journey I’ve walked on my own. I know it has been by the grace of God and through His strength that I have been carried through and continue to move forward. This recognition is a reminder that the work we do matters and that the impact we make on others is often greater than we realize.”

Marci Taylor is a career educator, wife, and mom of three, and her family also includes their beloved dog. Outside of education, she enjoys traveling, spending time with friends and family, and playing games on her phone or Nintendo Switch.

Back to School at St. Dominic

Alliance for Catholic Education at Little Flower

St. Dominic students are back with smiles and ready to learn.

Mr. Will Garey begins his second year teaching at Little Flower in the ACE program through the University of Notre Dame. He has acknowledged that his preparation through the ACE program has been a challenge, but it has developed his skills in the classroom. Watching him with his students, one can see how he loves his experience with a classroom full of fourth graders.

Davidson’s IB Class of 2026

Davidson’s IB Class of 2026 achieved an outstanding 95% IB Diploma pass rate, well above the global pass rate of 82%. This achievement reflects the hard work and academic commitment of our students and teachers throughout the rigorous two-year IB Diploma Programme.

Just in the past six years, 113 Davidson Warriors have earned the distinction of IB Diploma Candidate graduates, achieving an impressive 97% diploma pass rate. These graduates join more than 200,000 students worldwide who successfully complete the IB Diploma Programme each year. Heartwood Christian Academy Welcomes Families at Local Homeschool Expo

Mobile Christian’s Night of Prayer

Heartwood Christian Academy recently participated in the local Homeschool Expo, welcoming prospective families and sharing information about the school.

The event provided an excellent opportunity to connect with families new to homeschooling, answer questions, and introduce them to the unique programs and community Heartwood offers. Visitors came from across the region, allowing the school to reach many families who may not have been familiar with Heartwood Christian Academy.

The Heartwood exhibit was led by Mrs. Harriet Callahan and Mrs. Shellie Kirk, whose enthusiasm and dedication helped create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for every family who stopped by.

They were joined by Mrs. Linh Hoach, who also represented the school and helped welcome visitors throughout the event.

According to Mrs. Callahan, the expo saw an excellent turnout, with many families expressing genuine interest in homeschooling and asking thoughtful questions about Heartwood’s academic programs, extracurricular activities, and supportive community.

The successful event marks the beginning of preparations for the upcoming school year as Heartwood looks forward to hosting its next Open House and welcoming even more prospective families to campus.

Heartwood Christian Academy is thankful for the faculty and volunteers who continue to invest their time and talents in sharing the school’s mission with the community. Their dedication helps ensure that more families learn about the opportunities available through a Christ-centered education.

Old Shell Road Magnet Choir Students Perform at MEGA Conference

In July, Choir Students from Old Shell Road Magnet School performed at 2026 MEGA conference hosted by the Alabama State Department of Education at the Mobile Convention Center. Students sang two songs at the opening ceremony for over 4000 educators and administrators from across the state of Alabama. We are so proud of our choir students and thankful for our supportive OSR families.

A Joyful First Day at St. Ignatius

Welcome back, Impalas! St. Ignatius opened the 2026-27 school year with nearly 50 nursery students, more than 200 preschoolers, and over 400 K-8 students on campus.

UMS-Wright’s Annual Lads & Dads Night is a special tradition that brings our youngest Bullpups and their dads together with the varsity football team.

Hosted by Coach Williams and the varsity players, the evening gives boys in grades K3–4 the opportunity to spend time with the team, meet the players, and get autographs from their favorite Varsity Bulldogs! Covenant Christian Bringing the Energy Home

Professional growth doesn’t stop when the school year ends! This summer, one of our 1st Grade teachers and member of Covenant’s Administrative Team traveled to Orlando to attend Get Your Teach On, an energetic professional development experience that brings together thousands of educators from across the country.

The conference is built around a simple idea: Together is Better. Through collaboration, gradelevel connections, and shared experiences, educators are encouraged to learn from one another while discovering new ways to engage, challenge, and support their Students. What makes Get Your Teach On especially valuable is its focus on practical, classroom- ready strategies. Sessions provided creative ideas, useful tools, and fresh approaches that teachers can take back to their classrooms and put into action.

And that is exactly what happened at Covenant! During our Faculty & Staff In-Service, she brought some of that Get Your Teach On energy back to campus, sharing new tools and strategies with our teachers as we prepared for the year ahead. It was a great opportunity to learn together, exchange ideas, and continue building a culture where our faculty encourages and equips one another.

As we Cultivate Consistency this school year, opportunities like these remind us that consistency and growth go hand in hand. When our educators continue learning, collaborating, and investing in their craft, those efforts ultimately make their way into the classroom and benefit our students.

This summer, Davidson High School’s campus has seen several exciting improvements, including updates to our gymnasium.

As part of the gym floor renovations, we proudly added the name of Coach William A. Ryan, the namesake of our gym, directly onto the floor, ensuring his legacy remains a visible part of Warrior tradition for generations to come. We also refreshed our volleyball courts and added an additional court to support the growth of our volleyball program ahead of the fall season.

St. Luke’s Students Attend Alabama Boys State

Congratulations to Baker Farnell and Cooper Matthews on representing St. Luke’s at the Eighty-Ninth American Legion Alabama Boys State!

Throughout the week, Baker and Cooper distinguished themselves as outstanding leaders while gaining firsthand experience in government, leadership, and civic engagement.

Baker published the first edition of the 2026 series of The Citizen Builder, while Cooper campaigned for the office of Associate Commissioner of the Public Service Commission in the general election.

Both students also served on the Constitutional Convention Interest Group, where they researched, evaluated, and debated the Alabama State Constitution before helping draft a new constitution for the State of Alabama. We are proud of Baker and Cooper for representing our school and community with integrity, leadership, and Wildcat pride!

Heartwood Archers Shine at the 2026 NASP World Championship

The Heartwood Christian Academy Archery Team recently traveled to compete at the 2026 National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) World Championship, joining thousands of student archers from around the globe for one of the largest archery competitions in the world.

Although Heartwood did not have enough competitors to post a team score in the Bullseye event, the team delivered an outstanding performance in the 3D Championship, finishing 16th in the High School Division with an impressive team score of 1,645.

Several Heartwood archers earned remarkable individual accomplishments throughout the competition: Jarek captured 3rd Place in Middle School Boys Bullseye and 4th Place in Middle School Boys 3D, finishing among the world’s top young archers.

Laila earned 9th Place in Middle School Girls 3D and 17th Place in Bullseye, representing Heartwood with excellence.

Michael achieved personal bests in both events, scoring 261 in 3D and 269 in Bullseye.

Fae tied her personal best with an outstanding score of 256.

This year’s championship also marked the conclusion of two seniors’ competitive NASP careers. Congratulations to Aaron and Natalie as they graduate from student competition. Aaron plans to continue competing in the adult division next season, while Natalie will remain an important part of the Heartwood program as she steps into a new leadership role as Coach Natalie. The team was led by Coach Shelly Kirk, whose dedication and encouragement have helped the archery program continue to grow each year. The success of the season was also made possible through the unwavering support of archery families, volunteers, and sponsors who faithfully invested in the team throughout the year.

Congratulations to every member of the Heartwood Christian Academy Archery Team on an incredible season. Your hard work, perseverance, sportsmanship, and commitment have represented Heartwood well on the world stage. We look forward to seeing what next season brings!

UMS-Wright Student Named “Wonder Kid”

Meet Our Wonder Kid – Finley Gartman ‘27. Finley was drawn to international relations and government from a young age, driven by her innate sense of equality and justice.

That interest has taken her across the globe. She served as an international youth ambassador for the City of Mobile in its sister city, Ichihara, Japan, the summer before her junior year. Through UMS-Wright’s Project Engage program, she has completed internships with US Magistrate Judge Bradley Murray ‘86 at the Southern District of Alabama federal court and with attorney Michael Berson ‘98, a federal lobbyist at Adams and Reese.

She received the University of Rochester’s Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award for her commitment to social justice and community action. Congratulations, Finley!

Celebrating CAM’s Excellence in Third Grade Reading

We’re proud to recognize the outstanding achievement of CAM’s third graders on the Spring 2026 ACAP Reading Assessment!

Covenant Academy of Mobile achieved an impressive 87.8% reading proficiency rate, outperforming many districts across the region and ranking among the topperforming, high-poverty LEAs in the report.

Reading proficiency by third grade is one of the strongest indicators of future academic success, and our CAMsters continue to show what is possible through hard work, high expectations, and a commitment to excellence.

Even with an 81% poverty level, our 3rd grade students comparably demonstrated remarkable academic success, nearly matching the statewide average and exceeding the Mobile County average. St. Luke’s Volleyball Team Earns 2026 AVCA Team Academic Award

Congratulations to St. Luke’s Volleyball Team for earning the 2026 AVCA Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)!

This national recognition honors volleyball teams that have demonstrated excellence in the classroom by maintaining outstanding academic achievement throughout the school year.

In addition to receiving the Team Academic Award, the Wildcats also earned the prestigious distinction of being named to the AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll, recognizing them among the top 20% of team GPAs nationally within their division.

University of Mobile Brings the Universe to Heartwood Christian Academy

Students at Heartwood Christian Academy recently embarked on an unforgettable journey through the stars without ever leaving campus!

Thanks to Mrs. Harriet, HCA’s science teacher, students had the opportunity to experience an incredible portable planetarium presented by Dr. Salomon Itza from the University of Mobile. His visit transformed an ordinary school day into an exciting exploration of God’s amazing creation.

Inside the inflatable planetarium, students traveled across the night sky, discovering constellations, planets, galaxies, and other fascinating wonders of the universe. Dr. Itza explained complex astronomical concepts in a way that was engaging, interactive, and accessible to students of all ages. The experience encouraged curiosity, sparked thoughtful questions, and reminded everyone of the beauty and order found throughout God’s creation. As students gazed at the stars projected above them, they were reminded of Psalm 19:1: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”

Mrs. Harriet shared her passion for bringing hands-on science experiences to her students by inviting Dr. Itza to HCA. Her commitment to making science both exciting and meaningful created a memorable day that students will not soon forget. Heartwood Christian Academy is grateful to Dr. Itza for sharing his time, knowledge, and enthusiasm. The visit inspired students to continue exploring science while appreciating the incredible universe God has created.

Davidson High Recognizes Scholars

Davidson High School is proud to recognize the success of its Advanced Placement (AP) program, which includes students enrolled in the International Baccalaureate (IB), EPIC, and Honors programs. During the 2025-2026 school year, 374 students sat for at least one AP exam, representing 27% of the school’s student population.

In addition to strong participation, Davidson earned the distinction of having 170 AP Scholars, the most AP Scholars of any high school in Mobile County Public Schools. AP Scholar recognition is awarded to students who take at least three AP exams and earn scores of 3 or higher on each exam.

This achievement reflects the hard work and academic excellence of Davidson’s students and teachers. We are incredibly proud of our Warriors for embracing rigorous coursework and rising to the challenge!

You Cannot Teach a Nervous System on Fire What Every Educator Needs to Understand There is a student sitting in your classroom right now who is not okay. Something happened last night. It happened in a group chat, on a screen, in the dark hours when they should have been sleeping. They took a four-hour nap, never processed what happened, continued to extend the conversation as they got ready for school by constantly checking their device... and then they walked through your door. On fire.

I have spent over a decade working with students, families, and schools on digital safety and the rapidly changing world our kids are navigating. One of the most important shifts I have seen in that work is what looks like a behavior problem is very often a nervous system problem. Those two things require completely different responses.

When a student’s brain perceives a threat, the amygdala activates the stress response.

For adolescents, social rejection, online humiliation, and unresolved conflict register as genuine threats. Cortisol floods the body.

Heart rate increases. And the prefrontal cortex, which is the part of the brain responsible for focus, impulse control, decisionmaking, and learning, goes offline.

Psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Siegel calls this “flipping the lid.” The prefrontal cortex basically goes offline. And a student who has flipped their lid cannot learn. Not because they will not. Because the part of their brain that makes learning possible is literally not available to them in that moment.

Many of your students may have flipped their lid before they ever walked into your building. A Snapchat notification at 11 pm. A group chat that exploded by midnight. A comment about them that circulated Mobile Bay Parents I September 2026

while they slept... or napped, as it was. A TikTok algorithm that served increasingly emotionally activating content until 2 am when they finally put the phone down.

They arrive sleep-deprived, neurologically compromised, and already in a state of activation or shutdown. We then wonder why they cannot focus, regulate, or respond reasonably to redirection.

What You Are Seeing And What It Means

School is back. You will start to notice behaviors in your classroom. ( I am willing to bet all the stars and the moon you have already noticed these behaviors over the last ten years) But it looks like the student who explodes when you ask them to put their phone away (or coffee, backpack, keys. You name it). Their amygdala is already activated from something that happened hours ago, and your request tipped an already overloaded system into full threat response. They are not reacting to you. They are reacting to everything that came before you.

It also looks like the student who stares blankly and cannot respond. They are in what neurologist Dr. Stephen Porges describes as dorsal vagal shutdown. A nervous system that has moved beyond fight-or-flight into freeze. They are unreachable because their nervous system has gone into protective shutdown. Most of your student’s emotional threshold was already at capacity before they sat down. Traditional responses such as consequences, escalation, and removal address the behavior without addressing the state. And a nervous system that is on fire cannot process a 28

consequence. It cannot access reason or logic or discipline.

What You Can Do

The good news is that you have more power here than you might think. Co-regulation is incredibly important. A calm, regulated nervous system can actually help calm a dysregulated one. When you approach an activated student with a lowered voice, slowed pace, and steady presence, you are offering your regulated nervous system as a resource for theirs. Giving a dysregulated student two minutes and one low-demand task before redirecting creates space for the nervous system to begin settling. Sending a student on a brief errand or a quick walk activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the body’s natural calm-down mechanism. Teaching students slow, extended exhales (box breathing) activates the vagus nerve and begins to shift the nervous system out of activation. Last, encourage outside sources to speak with students and parents. Because the more we know, the more we can support one another.

Here’s the thing. You did not sign up to compete with an algorithm for your students’ attention and nervous system regulation.

But this is the reality of the classroom. It is not your job as a teacher to monitor your students’ device time. And you cannot teach a nervous system that is on fire. But there’re things we can do to help put the fire out… which supports the student and you.

If you are parenting a neurodivergent child, you have probably learned to brace yourself for certain realities: endless paperwork, IEP meetings, and goals that always seem to be just a few steps away. Progress is often discussed in terms of what still needs work, what hasn’t happened yet, and what should be coming next.

And somewhere in all of that administration, the small moments can get lost.

The quiet victories. The almosts. The things that don’t look impressive on paper but feel enormous when you live them.

It can be easy to miss the child who pauses instead of melting down, who finds a new way to show you what they are thinking, or who recovers more quickly than they used to. These moments may not match traditional milestones, but they matter deeply to parents of neurodivergent children.

Looking at Neurodivergent Children Through a Different Lens For decades, neurodevelopmental differences have been identified almost entirely in terms of deficits: what a child can’t do, what they struggle with, and what needs fixing. While support and intervention are important, this way of thinking can quietly shape how children see themselves.

The idea of neurodiversity offers families another option. Instead of asking how a child differs from the norm, neurodiversity asks how their brain works - and what that way of thinking brings with it. Neurodivergent children often demonstrate intense creativity, focus, sensitivity, pattern recognition, and deep curiosity.

Research increasingly supports what many parents already know instinctively: when children are seen for their strengths, not just their challenges, their confidence and sense of self grow. As Professor Lisa Steinhouse notes, “Your neurodivergent child is different and special; they’ll make you see the world differently.”

Many neurodivergent children also show a depth of interest that can surprise people. What is sometimes labeled as fixation is often intense passion, focus, and a desire to understand something fully. When supported, these interests can become sources of joy, learning, and confidence.

Celebrating Everyday Wins

Celebrating neurodiversity doesn’t require a mindset overhaul or a perfectly positive attitude. It starts with noticing.

Most parents are trained - by schools, systems, and experience - to watch for problems. Over time, this becomes second nature. But watching for what’s working matters just as much.

Train yourself to notice the moment your child asks for help instead of spiraling, when they calm themselves more quickly than they used to, or when they put effort into something hard, even when the outcome isn’t perfect.

Some parents find it helpful to write these moments down. This doesn’t need to be fancy or elaborate. Just a sentence in a notebook, a quick note on your phone, or a

line in a digital diary is all that is necessary.

You just need a record of the things that might otherwise be forgotten when days blur together. Over time, those notes tell a hopeful story of progress, persistence, and growth that isn’t always obvious in the moment.

Celebration doesn’t need to be loud to be meaningful. Many children respond better to quiet recognition: a shared smile, a simple “I noticed,” or a few extra minutes doing something they love. What matters is that the focus stays on effort and growth, not perfection.

It also helps to let strengths lead. A child who thinks visually may thrive with pictures, charts, or color-coding. A child with a deep interest can build skills through that passion instead of around it. When strengths are treated as tools rather than side notes, learning feels less like a battle.

Sharing these strengths with teachers and therapists can make a difference, too.

So often, conversations center on goals and gaps. Adding what motivates your child and where they feel confident helps create a fuller, more collaborative picture. As child psychologist Dr. Emily King explains, “Neurodivergent isn’t less than neurotypical.

It’s just a different operating system. The problem doesn’t lie in how neurodivergent kids learn, but in how inflexible the systems around them can be.”

Redefining What Success Means

One of the hardest parts of parenting a neurodivergent child is letting go of other people’s timelines. It can be hard to ignore the comparisons, the unspoken expectations, and the feeling that progress should look a certain way.

But families get to decide what success looks like. For some, success is a calmer morning routine. For others, it’s a child who understands their own needs better than they did last year. It might be joy. Or trust. Or a growing sense of safety in the world.

This way of thinking doesn’t deny challenges. It doesn’t pretend things are easy.

It simply makes room for dignity and small, acknowledged wins alongside difficulty.

When everyday wins are noticed and named, children learn something important. They learn that they are capable, that they are growing, and that who they are right now is worthy of care and celebration.

And sometimes, that quiet message is the one that lasts the longest. MBP

Playdates are an important part of childhood. They offer time for kids to interact socially without the structure of school or extracurricular activities. They also help kids learn to share, socialize, and play freely while still having support from their parents as needed. Kids with special needs are no exception and benefit from playdates as much as their peers. While they may take a little more planning and patience, it is well worth the efforts for everyone involved. Here are some tips for hosting a playdate with kids with disabilities.

Prior to the playdate, it is also a good idea to check in with the other parents about whether there are any food allergies or restrictions and anything important you should know.

Be Strategic Prior to the playdate, discuss with the other parents about what would be the best location to have the playdate. For some, their own home is more comfortable and successful. For others, staying at home may encourage the special needs child to say hello then retreat to their room while company visits. In this case, it may be better to go to a public place that everyone can enjoy, such as a park, museum, or zoo. On the other hand, parents who have a child that is prone to running away or hiding may find a public place overwhelming. Discuss your plans with all the parents involved and come up with the best solution for everyone. Another great strategy is to plan activities that unite the kids. Kids who struggle with talking to peers or sharing toys may find that a common interest helps them feel more at ease. Find out the interests of the kids you are hosting and offer an activity around one that excites all of those invited. Ideas could include a craft, a game, or visiting somewhere that fosters that interest.

She may have a seizure and is prone to major meltdowns. I find that when other parents know what’s ‘wrong’ with my daughter, they are more tolerant and

Be Patient Whenever kids are involved, patience is important. Try to understand that kids may have different reactions to situations, things may not go exactly as expected, and that it may take some time for kids with special needs to warm up to the situation.

Some children with special needs may prefer to participate in parallel play. Parallel play is when kids play beside each other, but do not interact with one another. Children who play alone during parallel play still enjoy the time together and are usually interested in what the other children are doing. If things do not go as planned, it is okay to cut the playdate short and try again in the future.

Be Understanding Parenting is not easy and we all struggle with different challenges when it comes to our children. Ask the parent if they need help with anything prior to the playdate. “I almost always have a few extra things to carry so please don’t be shy about asking if I need help.” says Taylor. “I also need a lot of grace.” Try to be patient and understanding. The other parent may be overwhelmed or tired. It may have been challenging to get there. All parents have great days where everything goes as planned and tough days where it seems nothing does. Listen and offer a hand when needed and they will most likely offer the same in return.

The most important tip for having a playdate with a special needs child is just to have them. It may take a little more planning and patience than the average playdate, but it is so worth it to both the parents and kids involved. Playdates offer a great chance for kids to interact with peers and make friends in a non stressful way, and they are also a great time for parents to connect and build each other up as well. MBP

Most parents have witnessed a fussy baby calmed by a lullaby, a toddler who can’t resist bouncing to a beat, or a preschooler inventing songs with hilarious lyrics. But beyond the joy and entertainment, there’s something remarkable happening inside those little brains. Music isn’t just fun. It’s foundational to how children learn, think, and grow.

The Science of Sound: How Music Builds Better Brains: Recent research

confirms what parents have long suspected: Music is a powerful tool for cognitive development.

A comprehensive meta-analysis published in Frontiers in Psychology analyzed 46 studies involving 3,530 children and found that musical training significantly enhances executive function. These are the mental skills that help children plan, focus, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks. These are the very abilities that underpin success in school, emotional regulation, and social navigation.

The longitudinal evidence is equally compelling. A study drawing on data from one of the largest long-term investigations of brain development found that kids who consistently engaged in music training scored higher on multiple cognitive and language tasks. Remarkably, the study also revealed music’s power as an equalizer: Musicians across all socioeconomic backgrounds demonstrated similar gains, suggesting that music training serves as a “cognitive enrichment tool” that transcends economic circumstances. Even the youngest children benefit. In a randomized controlled trial of three-year-olds, children who participated in music programs developed greater neural efficiency.

Why Children Are Natural Musicians:

So why does music feel so instinctive to children? The answer is biological. Research on musical ability has found that children’s musical abilities continue to improve without formal training until around age 12. This natural development is closely tied to the brain’s capacity to hold and process sounds, even in young children.

Beloved children’s musician Raffi captures this beautifully: “The first instrument the child is hearing is a parental, loving, caring voice. That feeling of being loved for who I am - being safe in my mama’s and papa’s arms - that feeling, that’s the first music.”

Because music activates multiple sensory channels simultaneously, it naturally

engages the developing brain in ways that feel like play. And as developmental experts have long noted, play is how children learn best. When music feels like play, children aren’t just having fun. They’re building neural pathways that will serve them for life.

Long-Term Benefits: The benefits of

music aren’t fleeting. They compound over time. A landmark twelve-year study on children receiving music lessons found that making music physically changed the brain, regardless of natural talent.

The more music the children played, the greater the activation of key brain regions.

Anne-Marie Seither-Preisler, author of the study, noted, “It is advisable to give every child an initially playful approach to music. After all, making music and singing is an investment in the perception of the world that surrounds us. Later cognitive abilities are largely based on the ability to perceive our world in a differentiated sensory way.”

Kitchen Band Jam: Pull out pots, pans, wooden spoons, and sealed jars. Tap, bang, and scrape to discover different sounds. Try a rhythm circle where one person sets a beat, and everyone follows.

Freeze Dance: Play upbeat music and dance. When the music stops, everyone freezes. This builds listening skills, selfcontrol, and body awareness. Better yet, giggles usually follow.

Body Percussion: Clap hands, snap fingers, stomp feet, or pat knees. Start with simple patterns and have children echo them back, then switch roles.

Sound Sorting: Gather everyday objects (keys, bells, paper, spoons) and explore how each sounds. Sort by loud/quiet, high/ low, or long/short. Hide an object behind your back and let children identify it by sound alone.

Nature’s Music Walk: Step outside and listen. Record sounds like birds, wind rustling, and leaves crunching, then play them back as a “sound quiz.”

Within days, Asher’s Medical Supply Closet had its own website, Facebook page, and we applied for 501(c)(3) status with the IRS. Within a year of being founded, we have shipped supplies to 18 states and have saved families the financial burden of purchasing supplies they needed out of pocket. I serve alongside an awesome board of parents, some with children with disabilities, and healthcare workers. We are continuously growing and have big plans for 2027.

MBP: Your upcoming children’s book, If There’s a Wheel, There’s a Way, celebrates abilities instead of limitations. What message do you hope every child—and every parent—takes away after reading it?

Cara Rain Lewis

CRL: I hope to inspire families and individuals that need wheels to get around to participate in activities they enjoy—to get outside, join a sports team, etc.—even if it means having adaptive equipment to do so. I encourage people to be creative and use their wheels to do something fun, travel the world, and do anything they desire to do or experience in this world.

MBP: When Asher was born, life took an unexpected turn with his medical diagnosis. Looking back, what was one of the biggest lessons that season taught you as a mom?

MBP: What has Asher taught you about joy, resilience, or seeing the world differently that you never expected?

CRL: Asher has taught me a life I would have probably never experienced without him. He has experienced more challenges at such a young age than many will ever face in their lifetime. He shows up to do hard things with a smile. He keeps moving forward. He has taught me that inchstones rather than milestones are worth celebrating, and he has given me a gratitude for small things that we often may overlook because it does not directly affect every person. He has taught me that all people are precious and worth the life they live.

CRL: When you have a child that has medical complexities and disabilities from birth or a young age, it almost “steals” your motherhood experience. Instead of checking developmental milestones off your checklist, you’re learning how to become a nurse, therapist, dietitian, pharmacist, medical records keeper, etc., overnight.

It’s hard to “turn off” all the new things you may be required to learn or keep up with if your child has medical complexities. I was constantly worrying, researching, or advocating for him instead of being able to just bond and learn how to be a mother.

Unfortunately, time passes and you can’t turn back the clock.

I felt like a lot of his baby/toddler years were stolen from me. It taught me to truly value the time you have to make memories with your child and family. Also, regardless of any diagnosis or journey, I’m still a mother first.

MBP: For families who may be walking a similar road with a medically complex child or a child with disabilities, what encouragement would you want them to hear today?

CRL: Since having Asher and being in the “disability world,” I have developed sweet and beautiful friendships with other mamas and even my son’s therapists or other people in his healthcare circle.

Those connections and relationships, both locally and internationally, have made the path less lonely. We share the lantern light together to guide and light the path before us, sometimes alternating who holds the lantern for the other. In life we all experience hardships, and having community and people to relate to and go through similar journeys with is the best medicine. I always tell parents to find their community. We weren’t meant to do this alone.

MBP: What has your journey looked like as Asher’s advocate, and what advice would you give another parent who suddenly finds themselves advocating for their child?

CRL: To be transparent, the journey of advocating for another person’s life and body is not simple. There was not a course or manual offered. Advocating can be scary, exhausting, exhilarating, yet still very empowering. My advice to a family suddenly advocating for their child is to stand strong and trust the parent you were chosen to be. Sometimes we are the only voice our children may have.

Cara Rain Lewis is passionate about special needs education, advocacy, and serving families in her community. She and her husband, Jarvis, have been married for four years and are the proud parents of their 7-year-old son, Asher, who has a rare genetic condition called ATR-X syndrome. Despite his physical and medical challenges, Cara Rain lovingly describes Asher as their family’s “sunshine on a rainy day.”

Cara Rain is a Parent Consultant with Children’s Rehabilitation Service, a nonprofit leader, and an active community volunteer. When she’s not advocating for families, she enjoys hiking, spending time outdoors, working out, and making memories with her family.

MBP: You founded Asher’s Medical Supply Closet from your own family’s experience. What inspired you to turn a moment of overwhelm into a nonprofit that’s now serving so many others?
