From the Publisher I am pretty sure it was still August when my daughter announced how excited she was that it was “fall.” She talked about making pumpkin bread and pulling out the Halloween decor. As I wiped the sweat off my forehead and turned the A/C down another degree, I reminded her that not only was it not fall, we hadn’t even made it past Labor Day, meaning it was still legal to wear white, not to mention, it was still pushing 100 degrees outside. After some negotiation, she conceded to wait until the first official day of fall, September 22. I can’t blame her, though. I love the fall season too! After this super-hot summer, just dreaming about cooler days spent working on my front porch swing with a hot cup of coffee and a slice of her pumpkin bread makes me smile. What are some traditions your family enjoys this time of year? It doesn’t have to be a holiday to celebrate a season. As Shannon Dean shares in “Pumpkins, Pancakes & Pajamas: Creating Meaningful Family Rituals This Fall,” there are so many simple ways to celebrate fall while spending quality time together and creating memories along the way. Speaking of fall traditions, as we do every October, this issue includes our annual Fall Festival Directory! Inside, you’ll find events for all ages, from adorable pumpkin patches for the littles to scarier adventures for those who dare. Whatever you choose to add to your calendar, take lots of photos, have fun, and make memories you’ll be talking about for years to come. Of course, while watching a scary movie or visiting a haunted house might naturally create a little anxiety, some children experience those same feelings during everyday situations. It’s natural for a child to hesitate when meeting new people or trying something new, but how does a parent know the difference between a normal, healthy response and a child who may be struggling with anxiety? In “Anxiety Disorders in Children: What Parents Need to Know,” Katy M. Clark shares her very personal experience with her daughter’s anxiety diagnosis and offers insight for other parents navigating similar concerns. And as we settle into fall, we know the busy holiday season isn’t far behind. Family gatherings, parties, and social events will soon begin filling our calendars. I love that Shannon Dean is helping us plan ahead and be proactive about teaching our kids how to put their best foot forward in age-appropriate ways. In The Gift of Good Manners: Preparing Your Child for Holiday Gatherings and Beyond, Dean shares specific activities, exercises and conversation starters that can help children practice good manners now, before the holiday whirlwind begins. While it may not be quite cool enough for hot coffee on the porch swing just yet, I know those days are right around the corner. So pull out the boots, bake up some pumpkin bread and fill your calendars with fun fall activities because it’s Officially Fall, Y’all!

anchor themselves in this question respond intentionally instead of reacting impulsively. They strengthen connection, reduce conflict, and build the long-term skills their children truly need. The greatest benefit of this approach is that it protects our sanity. When we let go of the non-issues, we free ourselves from the exhausting pressure of “fixing” every moment.

Action Steps for Parents

A Strategy for Raising Amazing Adults (Stop Fighting Battles That Don’t Truly Matter) Children are supposed to be immature. Their brains are still developing executive functioning, emotional regulation, impulse control, and social reasoning. Immaturity is not a flaw; it is a developmental reality. Yet many parents feel pressure to correct every behavior. When this happens, the home becomes tense and emotionally exhausting for everyone. On the other hand, when parents let too many things go, children miss the structure and guidance they need to grow into capable, resilient adults. This is exactly why I teach parents to pause and ask one simple question: “Is this behavior sustainable in adulthood?” This is a quick and reliable way to determine whether a moment calls for teaching or letting go so parents can easily focus on what truly matters. Take the child who bursts into tears because their banana broke in half. Will your future adult child fall apart over a broken banana? Of course not. As life becomes more complex, frustration tolerance naturally

increases. The best response is to validate their feelings rather than “fix” the problem by offering a new banana. If we want resilient children, we must tolerate their discomfort so they can learn to tolerate it too. Now consider the child who refuses to buckle their seatbelt. Will an adult someday drive around unbuckled? If that possibility terrifies you, lean in and teach until buckling up becomes a habit. Safety-based behaviors are always worth the battle. What about a child who insists homework is “too hard” and refuses to start? Could this pattern of avoidance follow them into adulthood? Absolutely. Help your child break the assignment into smaller steps, offer excessive support when they struggle, and model perseverance. When you stop correcting behaviors simply because they annoy you, embarrass you, or feel inconvenient, everything changes. You begin correcting only what is not sustainable in adulthood. Parents who

1. Use the sustainability filter — Before reacting, pause and ask: “Will this matter when they’re grown?” 2. Identify true teaching moments — Focus on safety, respect, responsibility, and emotional regulation. 3. Practice letting go — Release control over harmless, developmentally normal behaviors. 4. Take the time to build opportunities for practice — Children master skills through repetition and experience. 5. Strengthen connection — Relationship over correction when possible. 6. Reflect weekly — Ask yourself: “What battles did I choose? Which ones could I let go next time?” When we stop fighting battles that do not truly matter, we finally have the margin to create meaningful opportunities to help our children master the skills they need to thrive. Bright Beginnings Children’s Trust

Grandparents are Our Heritage at PCHS

Escambia County Children’s Trust has budgeted $3.5 million for Bright Beginnings, which is focused on school readiness for children from birth to age 6. The Escambia Children’s Trust’s next initiative will tackle the county’s low kindergarten readiness rate. The Children’s Trust specified that Bright Beginnings grant funds could “supplement, enhance and expand existing early childhood services and should not supplant federal, state, local or private funding sources used to provide basic child care operations, staffing requirements or mandated educational services.” Literacy coaches, family engagement coordinators, developmental screenings, evidence-based curriculum enhancements, parent workshops, kindergarten transition programs and mental health consultation are among the allowable uses for grant funds. For more information on Bright Beginnings, visit escambiachildrenstrust.org.

National Grandparents Day is celebrated every year on the first Sunday following Labor Day. At Pensacola Catholic High School we also honor our grandparents as they are our heritage and essential members of our families! This year’s Annual Grandparents Mass was on September 11. All CHS grandparents were invited to this special occasion. This year’s Mass was celebrated by Mgns. Steve Bosso, a Catholic High School alumnus from 1970. Students with grandparents in attendance participated as Lectors, Music Ministers, Eucharistic Ministers, and Gift Bearers. Following the Mass, a reception was held for grandparents and their grandchildren. Catholic High looks forward to this special event each year as a means of showing our gratitude for our students’ wonderful grandparents.

FAST Scores Improved in Escambia

Florida’s FAST (Florida Assessments for Student Thinking) results showed improvements across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties for the 2025-2026 school year. English Language Arts (ELA) scores increased for nearly all third- through 10th-graders, while math scores rose or held steady for most students in the local public school districts.

The Aggies Make History

For the first time in school history, Tate High School has earned an A school grade —and became the first traditional high school in ECPS history to achieve the state’s highest accountability rating. This milestone represents years of hard work, high expectations, collaboration, and a shared belief that all students matter. Congratulations to the students, teachers, staff, families, school leaders, and entire Tate community who made this historic achievement possible. Congrats, Tate High. Tate’s Vet Science Students Attend School Board Workshop

From Literary Cooking to Debate: Aletheia Christian Upper School Courses

Students (and an adorable mascot) from Tate High School’s Veterinary Science Academy visited the School Board workshop in September. In addition to supplying an overload of canine cuteness, the students shared insight on learning opportunities in and out of the classroom setting, such as volunteering in local veterinary clinics, gaining hands-on experience in the veterinary field, and experiences in FFA. The future of our area’s veterinary industry is undoubtedly bright.

Aletheia Christian Academy Upper School students in grades 7–12 get the opportunity each quarter to step outside the traditional classroom and explore something new through Activity Period. Course offerings change throughout the year and give students the chance to pursue interests, develop new skills, and simply have some fun! This quarter, students could choose from options such as Literary Cooking, Debate, Outdoor Games, Digital Art, SLU, Girls’ Bible Study, and more. In Literary Cooking, students brought Greek mythology to life by reading the story of Persephone and then creating their own Greek yogurt cups topped with pomegranate and other fresh fruits. A delicious way to connect literature and culture.

There is something for everyone! Pictured: Fellowship of Christian Athletes meet before school.

PSC Charter Academy Student Reflects on an Unforgettable Week at Florida Boys State

Jules Welch is one of three students from the Pensacola State College Charter Academy who recently attended the prestigious Florida Boys State program. According to the Florida American Legion, Florida Boys State is a selective, one-week summer leadership program hosted in Tallahassee where rising high school seniors learn about government by running simulated local, county, and state offices. Below, Jules shares his perspective on the challenges, opportunities, and lasting impact of his Boys State experience: My week-long experience at Florida Boys State was intense and eye-opening, even though the first 24 hours made me regret going. Running on barely two to three hours of sleep and then being thrown straight into a brutal 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM schedule, I was completely exhausted. We were rarely ever in our dorms except for sleep--something we didn’t get much of , constantly on the move from one session to the next. The real turning point for me came when I started connecting with the other delegates. Realizing that everyone else was pushing through the same exhaustion made it easy to break the ice. The social and networking aspect ended up being amazing--I made friends with people from completely different backgrounds from all over Florida, which completely shifted my mindset about being there. Serving as an elected Representative in the Florida Boys State House of Representatives was a major lesson in real-world politics. The one of the hard parts for me was just trying to get my bill onto the House floor, simply because delegates had submitted over 500 different bills. I had to learn on the fly how to advocate for my policy, build support, and stand out in a crowd of ambitious leaders. Beyond the House floor, we spent hours absorbing wisdom from experienced figures in state government. Hearing directly from leaders like the Secretary of the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, the Chair of the Florida Democratic Party (who also served as Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture), and active State Legislators gave me a firsthand look at how public policy actually functions. Pushing through that initial wall of sleep deprivation during the week to advocate for my bills and build a statewide network made this one of the best experiences I have ever had. I walked away with confidence under pressure, a deeper understanding of government, and friendships across Florida.

National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists Pensacola Catholic High School

Pensacola Catholic High School is honored to announced the names of the three Seniors who were recently named as Semifinalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Competition – Parker Hodge, Luke Juhas, and Everett Raybourn. This year marks the 72nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program with over 16,000 Semifinalists named. Students earned this designation by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) in the Fall of 2025. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, represents less than one percent of the U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition to earn one of the National Merit Scholarships that will be awarded on a stat-representational basis. To be considered and named a Finalist, the Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. Congratulations to Catholic High School’s National Merit Semifinalists!

Aletheia Christian Academy High School Students Head to the Blackwater River

Each year, Aletheia Christian Academy high school students head to the Blackwater River for a day of adventure and fellowship. Students spend the day canoeing down the river, enjoying free time along the shore, and making memories together. Seven Hours a Day Doesn’t Seem Like a Lot... Until It Does

every day is 6-8 hours a day, so let’s go with 7. The average lifespan is 77, but let’s use 80 for a round number. If that child stays on their device as they grow up for an average of 7 hours a day til they are 80, then they will have spent 20 years of their life on a device. That is 20 years sitting behind a screen. Now we know there are many different variables here. So let’s say we cut the time in half to give room for those

variables (time averages, age, etc). It is still 10 years of their life. Does this feel shocking to you? It did to me. It is because our brains experience screen time in minutes and hours, not in years of a finite life. Seven hours today doesn’t feel enormous. It’s scattered across checking a phone, answering messages, watching something, working, scrolling, looking something up. Each interaction feels small and often purposeful. The brain files it under what I did today, not a portion of my lifespan. But when we convert those normal hours into years, time becomes visible as a life resource. Twenty years translates differently. It looks like childhood, growing into teen years and young adulthood. It looks like the length of a career. It looks like raising kids. So I think then the opportunity cost becomes impossible to ignore. The years are not necessarily “wasted”…but like I said above….even if half of it IS junk scrolling…what are we missing out on? What are we replacing? Looking at another person’s face, being outdoors, moving our bodies, noticing our surroundings, being bored, creating, talking, playing. It feels like such a mismatch between intention and ac-

By the time your child turns 80, they will have spent 20 years of their life behind a screen. That is not a typo. If that idea bothers you as much as it does me and seems impossible, let’s run the numbers for a second. (Also, I am using averages and need a bit of leeway here…I’ll explain why after.) The average age a child receives a device is 11. (For these purposes, we are not going to count ipad/gaming screen time before 11). The average time a kid spends on a device

cumulation. No one wakes up and says, “I want to spend 20 years of my life on a device.” But we do so willingly, albeit a bit unknowingly. I speak often to parents about the 7 hours a day our kids (and us) spend on devices. To me, those 7 hours sound like a statistic. But 20 YEARS sounds like…a lifetime. I recently had a friend pass away. He didn’t miss or want to be on social media or screens at the end of his life. He wanted more time with his loved ones. His chosen friends who were family. He booked a trip before he became too ill and traveled with family so they could spend time together, face to face. He spent time making dinners, sharing coffee, sitting, chatting, and sharing memories. It seems like such a tragedy that we continue to outsource so much of our time to things that have no substantial meaning in the end. If anything, maybe we can teach our children how important it is to spend time WITH their loved ones and friends, and not behind a screen.

The holidays are a time for joy, connection, and celebration. But for many parents, they are also a time of heightened anxiety. Examples of common concerns are: Will my child say “thank you” for that less-than-thrilling gift? Will they refuse to eat Grandma’s special casserole? Will they have a meltdown before the main course? While these concerns are widespread during the holiday season, the solution may be an approach that works yearround: proactive and positive teaching. Good manners don’t appear by magic. They are a set of skills that can be taught, practiced, and reinforced over time. And the work you put in now will pay dividends not just at holiday dinners, but in every social situation your child will ever face.

The Struggle With Self-Regulation

Experts say that there’s a reason so many children struggle with basic courtesy. Katherine Reynolds Lewis, author of The Good News About Bad Behavior, points to a “crisis of self-regulation” in modern children. She cites changes in how and where children play, their access to technology and social media, and a decrease in meaningful “employment” (household

chores and responsibilities that build confidence and a sense of community). Manners are a form of self-regulation. They require a child to pause, consider the feelings of another person, and choose a response that is socially appropriate. Children do not intuitively know these skills. As educator Gayle Whitworth puts it: “Children aren’t born with manners. They learn them through observation, experience, and guidance. And just like any skill, manners take time to develop.”

The Evidence for Etiquette Education

The good news is that intentional teaching works. A study on the effects of an etiquette education program showed promising results. The study found that children who participated in structured etiquette instruction showed significant improvements in overall prosocial behavior, emotional control, and adaptability compared with a control group.

19

Another study examined the effects of teaching tea etiquette to preschoolers and found that it enhanced their attention spans and their ability to control their emotions. This suggests that the process of learning and practicing manners contributes to the development of core executive functions like attention and self-regulation.

Practical Tips for a Polished Holiday

So, how can you apply these principles to the holiday season and beyond? Here are some suggestions: 1) Set Expectations Before You Arrive: This is the most common and arguably the most effective teaching opportunity. Don’t assume your child will know how to behave at a large family gath-

confidence to handle difficult moments with grace. 4) Involve Them in the Process: Children are more likely to be invested in an event if they have a stake in it. Involve your child in the planning and preparation for the holiday or occasion. They can help decorate, set the table, choose a recipe, make a dish, or help shop for gifts. This builds a sense of ownership and responsibility, making them more likely to want the day to be a success. 5) Use a Signal: To avoid nagging or correcting your child in public, arrange for a secret signal ahead of time. It could be a raised eyebrow, two raised fingers, or a specific word. This allows you to discreetly remind them of the behavior you expect without causing embarrassment. And they can signal you back if they need a “rescue” from an uncomfortable situation. 6) Handle Mishaps With Grace: Even with the best preparation, things can go wrong. If your child makes a social misstep, experts recommend temporarily removing your child from the situation. Using a calm voice, explain, ‘Your comments were very hurtful to your uncle. It is never OK to hurt someone’s feelings.” Correcting them in front of others can be humiliating. A private, calm conversation is much more effective for teaching a lasting lesson.

ering. Go over the plan for the day. Explain where you are going, what will happen, who will be there, and what kinds of foods will be served. Be specific about your expectations. A vague command to “be good” is much less effective than a specific reminder like, “Remember to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ at the dinner table.

944-5650 www.labelleperformingarts.com This includes practicing mealtime manners during regular dinners, as well as specific skills like greeting guests and saying thank you for gifts.

2) Practice Makes Permanent: It helps to remind children that everyday manners are just as important as Sunday/ holiday manners. Good manners needn’t be saved for company. Practice polite behavior at home so that it feels natural.

3) Role-Play Tricky Scenarios: This is a powerful tool that many experts recommend. To help your child navigate a potentially awkward situation, rehearse it at home. For instance, you could roleplay receiving an undesirable gift. Try something like: “You know, Grandma Mary may give you a gift you don’t like, but remember to say thank you and give her a nice hug”. This gives your child the

7) Conduct a Post-Event Review: After the event, have a private conversation with your child. Review what went well. Praise them for the situations in which they handled themselves as expected. While you can certainly bring up areas for improvement, the focus should be on what they did right. This reinforces the positive and makes them more likely to repeat the behavior. 8) The Real Gift: Ultimately, teaching your child good manners is about more than just surviving a holiday dinner. It’s about giving them a crucial set of social and emotional skills that will help them build strong relationships, navigate the world with confidence, and become empathetic, caring individuals. And that is a gift that truly keeps on giving. GPP

Don’t Let Up. You Can See the Finish Line Q. My husband and I have been married for a couple of years. In that time, we’ve received several gifts of cash from our parents. Each time this happens, my husband and I talk about what to do with the money. I came into the marriage with some debt, and we still have about $8,000 in credit card bills and student loans to pay off. During our last discussion, I told him I felt like we should keep paying off debt with the money, but he said he wants to treat it like found money this time. He wants to have fun with it. How do you feel about this? A. In my mind, unless the giver has very specific wishes on how they’d like you to use the money, then it’s up to you guys. It’s a decision you two should make together. I assume, since you didn’t mention otherwise, you’ve made a habit of using these gifts to pay off debt. If that’s the case, I can

Greater Pensacola Parents I October 2026

understand how it may have thrown you for a loop. I’m proud of you two for being so diligent in using your parents’ gifts to help pay off debt. On the other hand, I understand it can become tiring to feel like you’re working and sacrificing day after day in pursuit of a goal. I’m not sure how much you had in debt originally, but $8,000 really isn’t that much when you think about it. If you have a decent household income, you should be able to pay off the remaining debt in less than a year! It sounds like your husband just needs a little pep talk. I’m sure he’s a good guy. And the fact that he’s been right there with you on this journey to gain control of your finances tells me he has discipline and determination, too. Try sitting down with him and having a good heart-to-heart talk. Ask

22

him why he changed his mind about how to use the money this time. Remind him of how close you two are to becoming debt-free. Let him know how proud you are of him for everything he’s done. If there’s something you need, you agree on it together and choose to buy it as a couple, that’s fine. I’ve got no problem with that. But you shouldn’t go out and blow a bunch of cash—gifted or not—on toys and other fun just because it was handed to you by mom and dad. You’ve got bills to pay, and those obligations should come first. At this point, you can see the finish line. Please, don’t slow down now. I promise this last little grind will be worth it!

Even better, fall rituals don’t have to be fancy. But they are a fun, impactful way to connect with your family.

There’s something special about fall! It gifts us with a shift in the light, the first chilly morning, and the rustle of leaves under sneakers or boots. It’s a season that practically begs us to slow down, to turn inward, and to create moments that matter. And yet, for so many families, fall is a blur. Between school obligations, sports practices, homework, and the looming chaos of the holidays, it’s easy to tumble into the season without pausing to make it special.

The Benefit of Fall Rituals Goes Beyond Cozy Togetherness We’re living in accelerated times. And in the fall, when school resumes, even our downtime feels busy. Phones ping, schedules fill, and dinner often happens in the car between obligations. But even tiny rituals give kids something to hold on to. According to research published in the Journal of Family Psychology, family rituals are strongly associated with increased connection, emotional well-being, and better academic outcomes in children. And they help us, too. In a world where parenting can feel like a constant game of catch-up, rituals give us something to look forward to. They remind us to slow down, to laugh, and to sit across from our children and just be with them. And they help our kids understand what makes their family special. Doctor of Clinical Psychology Dr. Amanda Mullin, Founder of Mindworx Psychology, notes, “In today’s world, where you can buy a hot-cross bun in January, and Christmas decorations in October, special traditions or experiences that occur only once a year are increasingly unique.” Here are some suggestions for easy, fun, quick, and cheap fall rituals:

That’s where fall rituals come in! Unlike routines, which can feel like chores with a deadline, rituals are about connection. They’re the things your kids will remember. They’re tiny traditions, repeated with intention, that help your family feel safe, loved, and part of something special. Licensed professional counselor Maria Spada explains, “Children thrive in environments that offer structure and predictability. When a child knows what to expect, it creates a sense of emotional safety. Rituals communicate love, stability, and care in ways that words alone cannot.”

Pancakes and Pajamas: One of the easiest (and tastiest) fall rituals to adopt is pancake and pajama Saturdays (or pick any day). The rules are simple. No rushing. No dress codes. Just a stack of pancakes (or waffles) and everyone in their comfiest clothes. It’s fun to put a fall twist on this tradition. Think spiced pancakes, strudel, and apple cider or hot chocolate. The kids can help you whisk the batter, and everyone can take turns choosing a topping.

a gratitude jar where family members drop in notes throughout the season and then read them all together on Thanksgiving. These activities might sound simplistic, but they send a powerful message to your kids: our home is a cozy, soft place to land where we can just be.

Letting Kids Take the Lead: One of the most powerful ways to create rituals that last is to involve your kids in the planning. Ask them what they’d love to do this fall. Their ideas might surprise you. Maybe your daughter wants to read spooky chapter books by flashlight every Wednesday night. Maybe your toddler just wants to jump in leaf piles repeatedly. Lean into it. When kids feel a sense of ownership, the ritual becomes theirs and is more likely to stick.

Fall Rituals In Nature Ground Us: Fall lends itself beautifully to rituals in nature. Whether it’s a weekly walk to find the best leaves or a family “pumpkin of the week” challenge, the point is to tie your ritual to what’s happening outside of your front door. A few simple ideas include visiting an orchard or pumpkin patch, exploring a corn maze, taking a hayride, or spending the afternoon at a park. If you want to stay close to home and keep it simple, try a scavenger hunt where kids find acorns, crunchy leaves, or pinecones. Sure, your teenager may roll their eyes at the annual leafraking activity and corresponding photo, but know that they’re secretly absorbing the message that family matters and that some things are worth preserving.

After the Season Fades: Of course, fall isn’t forever. Leaves fall, we put away decorations, and before we know it, winter takes center stage. But that’s the beautiful thing about rituals. Once they’re part of your rhythm, they travel with you. Fall pancakes and pajamas can become winter waffles in January. What you’re really building is a connection. And that lasts far longer than any season. So this fall, pick some tiny traditions and do them again and again. Because someday, these are the moments they’ll remember. GPP

Cozy Family Nights: Here’s a simple idea with items

you likely already have. Pick one night a week where everyone comes home, puts on his or her coziest sleepwear, and lets the world fall away. Bonus points for hot chocolate, board games, and reading books or watching movies as a family. Start a family tradition where everyone shares favorite memories from the past year during your fall family dinners. Or create

DISORDERS in Children: What Parents Need to Know By Katy M. Clark Greater Pensacola Parents I October 2026

34

www.greaterpensacolaparents.com

My daughter was nine years old when she had her first panic attack. She was trembling, out of breath and her heart pounded. These symptoms persisted for almost ten minutes and nothing I said or did could help her calm down. Because her symptoms occurred before her performance in a class play, though, I dismissed it as stage fright. When she suffered the same symptoms a short time later, this time before a party at her school, I realized something was wrong. Especially when she told me what triggered her intense physical symptoms: she could not stop worrying that something bad would happen to me as I drove to her class party. Having some anxiety is a normal part of life for most kids. After all, what child doesn’t feel anxious before taking a test or making a presentation in front of the class? Some children, however, feel worry or fear constantly. According to the Mayo Clinic, anxiety disorders involve “intense, excessive and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations.” Further, such feelings of anxiety and panic “interfere with daily activities, are difficult to control, are out of proportion to the actual danger and can last a long time.” The latest US data from the CDC reports 10% of children ages 3-17 have

current, diagnosed anxiety. That’s millions of kids! My daughter was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder after we visited her pediatrician. Now she sees a therapist and takes medication to treat her anxiety. Through her experience, I have learned so much about anxiety disorders in children. I’m sharing what I’ve learned below in hopes of helping other parents and caregivers.

Types of Anxiety Disorders in Children

There are several types of anxiety disorders, related to what the worries or fears are about, or how children handle them. According to WebMD, the most common anxiety disorders in kids include the following:

• Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

is constant worrying about a lot of different things out of proportion to the actual circumstance.

• Panic disorders are characterized by

• Separation anxiety is the fear that something bad will happen to a parent or loved one when the child is separated from them. Some separation anxiety is a normal developmental phase for babies and toddlers, but not necessarily for older children. • Social anxiety is extreme anxiety and fear of being embarrassed in social situations, like talking with classmates or answering a question in class. It is more than simple shyness.

Symptoms

The most typical symptoms of anxiety disorders in children, per the CDC and WebMD, include:

• Showing anxiety or expressing worry or fear on most days, for weeks at a time • Trouble sleeping which may manifest in your child seeming sleepy or tired during the day • Difficulty concentrating or thinking about a problem over and over again

sudden, intense fear that leaves a child feeling physically overwhelmed and out of control, even when there is no danger.

• Unusually irritable and angry

35

www.facebook.com/greaterpensacolaparents

• Headaches

• Stomachache • Avoiding school or friends because worries are overwhelming • Trouble calming down after leaving a parent or loved one, or extreme homesickness

How to Help

The CDC recommends talking to your healthcare provider as a first step. This is

Greater Pensacola Parents I October 2026

what we did in my daughter’s case when we visited her pediatrician. A primary care doctor or mental health specialist can evaluate your child and ensure that your child’s symptoms are caused by anxiety and not another condition, such as trauma. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and medication are the most accepted treatments to help children overcome an anxiety disorder according to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America. CBT teaches your child skills and tools to help them feel less anxious and fearful. Through CBT, for instance, my daughter learned to utilize tools like a “worry box”. She’d write down her worry on a piece of paper, then stuff the paper in a box. It was a tangible way to release her fear.

36

Prescription medication may also help. Parents should work closely with a health care provider to manage the use of medication and monitor your child’s response. As well, parents should let their children know they are available to listen whenever their children are ready to talk. Many kids with anxiety believe their parents won’t understand and thus try to hide their fears. That’s why being ready to listen is so important. My daughter also joined an anxiety disorder support group at her school, allowing her to connect with peers that understand what she’s going through. As well, I have found support talking to other parents of children with anxiety disorders. So many have been supportive and understanding, making me feel less alone. Anxiety is a treatable, manageable condition. As parents, we can help kids with anxiety disorders receive the tools, support and love they need to live their healthiest lives possible. GPP Katy M. Clark is a writer and mom of two who embraces her imperfections on her blog Experienced Bad Mom.

Wile E. Coyote is re-examining his doomed attempts to capture the Road Runner. Fed up with the defective products he has purchased to aid his relentless pursuit, he hires a lawyer to sue the Acme Corporation – and refuses to settle. Fans of classic Loony Tunes Saturday morning cartoons need not fear: the film is a hilarious mix of sight gags, funny dialogue, and situational comedy. Surprisingly, it even includes character development. This toon is a family-friendly production that will have moviegoers of all ages laughing out loud. Photo ©Ketchup Entertainment

Determined to live their dream of raising tomatoes and making pasta sauce, Tim and Polly move their unwilling, screen-addicted children to the British countryside. The house is a ramshackle barn, the wi-fi is non-existent, and the kids are sullen. That is, until youngest child Fran discovers a tree that leads her to magical places such as the Land of Birthdays and the Land of Goodies. Based on a novel series by Enid Blyton, this film features charming scenes, gentle magic, family loyalty, and minimal negative content. It’s an easy watch for most kids. Photo © Vertical

Bewitching sisters Gillian and Sally Owens return to the big screen, this time joining with the next generation of witches to break a family curse – one that prevents them from finding lasting love. As usual, the cast’s chemistry is excellent and the comedy lands with laughs but the film is poorly paced and drags in the middle. Parents should note frequent occult elements as well as some violence, profanity and sexual innuendo. Fans of the first show will enjoy this sequel, but it is less compelling for new viewers. After an evening with a girl named Emily, Owen realizes that the phone number she gave him is incorrect. Egged on by another Emily who is seeking material for her psychology research project, Owen launches an all-out search for the young woman who stole his heart. This film tries to be a light-hearted romance, but many viewers will be creeped out by its whitewashing of stalking and implicit criticism of women who value their personal safety. Throw in crude jokes and frequent scenes of alcohol consumption and this film isn’t teen-friendly. Photo ©Focus Features

Lieutenant Troy Kelly, a US navy pilot has a low opinion of the Soviet Union and its Communist system. But when his plane is shot down during a spy mission, he finds himself being cared for by a disillusioned ex-KGB agent. As both men work together to help Kelly get home, the young American learns about friendship, courage, loyalty, and the humanity of the people he meets. Fast-paced and a bit goofy, this thriller delivers plenty of action and more than a few laughs. The PG-13 rating is fair and genre fans will likely enjoy the film. together without all of the noise and responsibilities. We come back refreshed and reminded that we are more than principals, parents, and professionals—we are also husband and wife. GPP: You’ve served your community in so many ways. What motivates you to continue giving your time and talents to the community? KT: For me, service has always been about purpose. It has never been about recognition. I’ve been blessed to work with some incredible people throughout my career, and I’ve seen what happens when people stop asking, “What’s in it for me?” and start asking, “How can I help?”—that’s when real change happens.

Dr. Kimberly Thomas

GPP: You were honored with the PACE Education Leader of the Year Award. What did that recognition mean to you personally, and what do you hope your work in education leaves behind for students and families in our community?

GPP: With both you and your husband working in education and two very active kids, what makes your family dynamic special?

KT: That recognition meant a lot to me because education has never just been a career. It’s a calling. When you spend more than 20 years doing something, there are many moments when you wonder if you’re really making a difference. So when someone takes the time to say, “We see what you’re doing,” that means something. I hope my legacy is that students felt seen, valued, challenged, and loved. I want families to know that their children mattered to me. I want the work I do to create opportunities for children that might not otherwise have existed. If I can leave a community better than I found it and help develop the next generation of leaders, then that is the legacy I want.

KT: God keeps our family in the midst of it all, and he leads and guides our steps. We know it is HIM

GPP: If you could give another mom one piece of advice about raising children, balancing a career and still making room for the things that bring you joy, what would you tell her?

who truly makes our family dynamic special. Both my husband and I have been in education for more than 20 years, and now we’re both principals. We both know what it means to have a long day at school and still come home and be Mom and Dad. There’s a lot of grace in our house because we understand the demands of each other’s jobs.

KT: Trust and believe in God and continue to pray. Don’t lose yourself in the process of taking care of everybody else. Being a mother is one of the greatest responsibilities and blessings I’ve ever experienced, but our children also need to see us pursuing our purpose and finding joy in life. You are allowed to have dreams outside of motherhood. You are allowed to have a career. You’re allowed to laugh with your girlfriends. You’re allowed to travel. And don’t feel guilty about it. Being a good mother doesn’t mean giving up who you are—it means allowing your children to see what it looks like to be a woman who loves her family, serves others, works hard, pursues her purpose, and still makes room for joy.

GPP: What drew each of you to education, and how has being educators shaped the way you parent? KT: We genuinely want to make a difference, create opportunities, build relationships, and help children recognize their own potential. Being educators definitely follows us home and influences the way we parent! We talk to our children about responsibility, character, accountability, and making good choices, but we also want them to know that mistakes are part of growing. We try to teach our children that success isn’t about being perfect or always being the best. It’s about working hard, being a good person, learning from your mistakes, and never being afraid to try again.

Rapid Fire: Favorite family vacation destination? Hawaii Favorite sports team to cheer for? Auburn Tigers Your go-to “wind therapy” ride? Country/County Roads Coffee or tea? Coffee One word your kids would use to describe you? Caring

GPP: You and your husband have a unique way of getting away from the demands of work and family life—you ride motorcycles and call it “wind therapy.” Tell us about that tradition and what riding together means to you both. KT: “Wind therapy” is our way of hitting the reset button. When you’re on motorcycles, you can’t think about the next meeting or who needs calling back. You’re just riding. You’re in the moment. And there’s something really special about doing that together as a couple. It’s our time, experiencing something Greater Pensacola Parents I October 2026

Dr. Kimberly Thomas and her husband, Derrick, have been married for two decades and are the proud parents of two wonderful children, Kalyn (16) and DJ (13). Outside of school, Kalyn and DJ stay busy with their athletic extracurricular activities. Game nights are one of the family’s favorite ways to slow down, laugh, and spend quality time together. Kimberly also enjoys motorcycle rides with Derrick, traveling, and, of course, a good meal!
