Publisher’sNote The Eastern Shore’s Foremost Parenting Source

I love being up before everyone else in the house, especially with these cool, crisp fall mornings. Each day, I start by going to the back porch, where I take deep breaths, stretch, and thank God for another day. Some days, I also take my morning devotional out on the porch. I find that starting my day being centered and thankful sets the tone for the rest of it. Naturally, there are days that don’t start as planned, but I do try hard to include prayer and gratitude in each day. Counting your blessings and expressing gratitude is a powerful tool. It can really impact your mood and perspective. However, the media wants to make it difficult. We are constantly bombarded with messages that we need the latest and greatest “whatever” hot on the market. This can make raising children to appreciate what they have incredibly challenging. So, how do we model and teach gratitude to our kids? Jan Pierce has a great article in this month’s issue, Growing a Thankful Family in a Want-More World. Jan provides us with practical suggestions of ways we can plant the seeds and hopefully harvest that thankful attitude in our families. One of the many things I am super thankful for is my family, and with the holidays coming up, I am so excited to spend more time with them. I don’t know what it is, but when we get together, we always end up laughing hysterically. I am not even sure that we are that funny. I think we all just have some weird ability to find the funny in the mundane and laugh at ourselves…a lot! I don’t mean just a chuckle here and there. I am talking full-on tears rolling down our faces, can’t understand what you are saying laughing. We can crack ourselves up to the point we can’t even tell others what we are laughing about. Even as I write this, I am laughing out loud thinking about the “Marie Calendar’s Facebook Burnt Pie” scandal I read at Thanksgiving a couple of years ago. (Do yourself a favor and look that one up). I consider my sense of humor a blessing, too, because laughing puts you in a good mood and has some health benefits, as Kailyn Rhinehart shares in this month’s feature, The Hidden Power of Laughter. If you are looking forward to a fun holiday with your family, check out the 2023 Holiday Happenings Guide in this issue. This listing is filled with tree lightings, Santa sightings, and all kinds of family-friendly events to enjoy. But don’t stop there; we have even more activities in our Family Calendar! As we wrap up November, I hope you will join me in striving for an attitude of gratitude, and as you count your blessings, remember also to be a blessing to others. And if you burn your pie this Thanksgiving, definitely do not post it on the pie company’s social media. From my family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

Processing Positive Emotions Recently, my counselor explained to me that I do not process positive emotions. This realization has been life changing for me. When I experience a negative feeling, I think through it and process it. I attempt to understand why I am having it, assess what I can learn from it, and address anything that needs to change. However, when I experience positive emotions, I just let my brain rest. How has this impacted my parenting? As a mother, I gave my time, energy, and attention to my negative feelings of fear and anger without ever pausing to appreciate the moments that I felt excited and happy. I experienced happiness when my children were kind or excelled at something, but I did not spend time processing that happiness. I just enjoyed it in the moment without thinking through what made me happy, what I could learn from it, and how we could keep doing things that brought on that feeling.

Eastern Shore Parents I November 2023

How did this make my children feel? They never felt like I spent time appreciating their successes, what brought them joy, or enjoying things that went well. I am an optimist by nature and a very encouraging person. So, when my children pointed out that I was not enjoying what was good, I never understood what they were saying until my counselor explained this to me. How can we build a habit of processing positive emotions? 1. Take time to notice the positive emotions you feel during the day and write them down. For example, you may feel elated when a task takes less time than you anticipated or proud when your daughter eats her green beans without complaining. Do not make the mistake I did and let your brain “rest” when these moments take place. Instead, stop and take note.

8

2. At one point in the day, stop and list three times that you felt positive emotions in the last 24 hours. 3. Choose one positive emotion and find ways to build on it. Exercise your positive emotions in the same way that you do your body. If you want to feel proud, make lists of all the little things you accomplished that day instead of focusing on what did not get done on your to do list. If you want to feel more joy, purposefully look for things that bring on that feeling and intentionally practice them daily. 4. Practice gratitude. Go out of your way to make a habit of giving thanks for every little thing you take for granted. Be grateful for your home even when it is dirty, your friends even when they annoy you, and your family even when they are frustrating. 5. Keep physical reminders of positive experiences. I have a friend who has a beautiful display of glass bottles with sand from all the beaches she has visited. She takes time weekly to look at those bottles and reflect on joyful memories from each place. You can keep cards, photos, journal entries, and memorabilia of good times. As you begin to better recognize and process your positive emotions, teach your children how to do the same. They will be thankful you gave them this gift early in life!

Make Plans for the Turkey Take-Out

Local churches, organizations, and schools are stepping up to help those in need in the Lower Alabama area again this year. The Fourteenth Annual Turkey Take-Out is gearing up to feed an estimated 1,500 people, many of whom are the families of local schools in Foley, Gulf Shores, and surrounding areas. Turkey Take-Out is a community partnership of community churches and organizations with area schools that began after local pastoral leaders and active community citizens learned of the severe need of many of the school’s students. “With over seventy percent of the school’s population at poverty level or below and over 100 students labeled as ‘homeless’, we couldn’t look the other way and do nothing to help,” said Ginny Barnas, owner of Island Air, Inc. and one of the organizers of Turkey TakeOut. Turkey Take-Out was established to provide families with a warm meal on Thanksgiving Day as well as non-perishable food items to fill their pantries as well. Last year’s Turkey Take-Out fed over 290 families and, in addition, collected non-perishable food to deliver to these families as well. The Thanksgiving meal of turkey, dressing, green beans, gravy, cranberry sauce, rolls, pie was packaged and delivered with the help of more than 250 volunteers over two days. The City of Foley, Fortis College, Anchor Point Church, Church at the Shores, Oyster Bay Baptist Church, South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, Family Tree Chiropractic, OWA, Sea Paws, South Baldwin Christian Academy, and area schools are just a few of the area organizations and businesses that provided muchneeded donations of turkeys, canned foods, and monetary donations. Many generous donors provided the financial ability to purchase all of the food that was delivered. “The response by the pastors, business leaders, and community to help the children of our school was overwhelming. I was so humbled by the willingness of so many people to provide this service to our children and meet the needs of our students and their families. The response is proof that people really do care, are willing to help their neighbor, and that there is hope for those who are needy” said Dr. William Lawrence, former principal of Foley Elementary School. Turkey Take-Out is calling on everyone to collect non-perishable food items and deliver them to the following locations: Anchor Point Church or Church at the Shores. Churches or other organizations can also collect the food items to be delivered to Anchor Point Church or Church at the Shores by Friday, November 17, 2023. Turkey Take-Out is in need of donations to buy the food for the Thanksgiving meals. A donation of $50 will feed a family of four. Donations can be made directly to Anchor Point Church. Also, volunteers are still needed for the gathering of food, organization of non-perishable foods, packaging, and delivery. Anyone wishing to donate or volunteer can go to the Turkey Take-Out website at www. turkeytakeout.com. Check us out on Facebook too!

A Current Age Debate: Preschool or Not? Hey guys! All of you have talked with your child’s healthcare provider about milestones. We all think about sitting up, walking, babbling, smiling and talking. But what about some group social skills and exposures to stressors and illnesses? For example, how does a child learn to share or take turns? What about separation anxiety and learning how to cope when a parent is not there? And what about illness exposure and your child’s immune system? Let’s address some ideas about exposing young kids to other kids and some pros and cons! First, it is vitally important for kids to have peer exposure at all ages. Whether it’s through large group daycares, in-home daycares, half-day preschools, full day preschools, Mother’s Day Out, church nurseries or play groups, they have to learn how to interact with others in terms of playing, speech, and communication, sharing, and creative play. One of my favorite things I used to ask my kids was what they did at school that day. I often got fantastic stories of playing Batman on the playground or “baby doll” with Annie and Mrs. Becky! And what about things like art projects, music,

Eastern Shore Parents I November 2023

and dancing? I love seeing how kids express themselves individually and in the group when they do projects. Finally, all kids must learn expected social behaviors. Taking turns, waiting in line, sharing, not hitting or biting, and not always getting your way or what you want are all so crucial in the development of a child. I’ve been asked time and time again how to stop temper tantrums when a child wants something. Here’s the trickit’s expectations! If you give them everything they want, they will expect it every time. Group exposure can help temper unreasonable expectations and give them a more reasonable outlook. So, you’ve decided to send your kid to get some group/peer exposure. You walk them into the classroom on the first day, and your kid freaks out. The non-stop crying, flailing of arms and legs, giving you those terrified puppy eyes. So what should you do? Take them home immediately, right? Wrong! It is a normal response for a child to have separation and stranger anxiety and to be upset. But, they need to learn how to adjust to these exposures healthily. Just think, it’s the first day of Kindergarten, and you walk them in, and as you leave, it’s

14

meltdown city! It’s much easier to deal with a two-year-old not wanting to be at Mother’s Day Out than a 5-year-old in Kindergarten. Finally, an article was recently published in the journal Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine by Sylvana M. Cote, basically stating that kids who attend daycare or preschool get more colds when they are young but have fewer colds when they are school-age. And the flip side is true- kids who do not attend any daycare or preschool have fewer colds when they are young but have more colds when they are school-age. So, from an academic standpoint, it’s better to miss daycare or preschool than Kindergarten and first grade. I’m not saying you have to put your kids in daycare. I’m saying it is an excellent idea to expose your kids to other kids so they can learn vital social behaviors, figure out how to react when you are not with them, and finally, catch a cold or two. Adrienne Smith-Powell J. Larry Newton Elementary

Eight years into teaching and Adrienne SmithPowell is embracing the life of being a seasoned teacher at J. Larry Newton Elementary in Fairhope, AL. While discussing her love for teaching sixth graders, Adrienne reflected back on her first year at Newton with plenty of gratitude and even a bit of advice for new teachers. “It can be difficult as a first and even a second-year teacher. I would say to find a good veteran teacher and become friends with them,” shared Adrienne. “Susan Clinton was the best mentor to me my first-year teaching. She pushed me and molded me into the teacher I am today and I am forever grateful for her guidance.” Adrienne mentioned that, as a new teacher, she wishes she wouldn’t have been so hard on herself. “You go to college and learn how to create the perfect lesson plans but nothing prepares you more for teaching than experience,” Adrienne said. “You are not meant to be perfect. Everything will come together. Do not be afraid to ask for help.” The same advice Adrienne would give new teachers is actually advice she would give to her students as well. She works hard to be authentic and transparent with her 6th graders and feels like that honesty helps strengthen her relationship with them.

Eastern Shore Parents I November 2023

“My students have taught me that it’s okay to mess up and laugh at yourself. You do not have to have it together, all the time. I am comfortable saying, ‘you know guys, I did not do that right. Let’s try this again.’” As a child, Adrienne loved playing ‘teacher’ and adored her own teachers growing up. It was a given that when her time came, she too would become a teacher and her mission would be to advocate for her students. Her hope is that they will always feel seen and heard, even after they leave her classroom. Adrienne was shocked to find out about her nomination as Eastern Shore Parents Teacher of the Month. “It feels amazing,” she said about receiving the award. “I was so surprised to see that I had been selected. I wish I knew who nominated me because I would love to thank them personally. My husband and I have a lot of big things happening right now and this nomination only adds to the excitement and makes it that much sweeter.” Adrienne Smith-Powell and her husband James married this past July and are expecting their first baby in April 2024. When she isn’t teaching, Adrienne is the JV Cheer Coach at Fairhope High School and also leads Young Life Eastern Shore. When she has free time on the weekends, she loves to be at the beach with her husband.

The parents who attended beamed with pride both at the terrific preparation evident from their costumes and displays, and from the outstanding performances. It was clear that the students had put tremendous energy and effort into preparing for the presentation. Bayside Academy Named to Advanced Placement School Honor Roll

College Board announced that Bayside Academy has been named to the Advanced Placement® Program (AP®) School Honor Roll, earning gold distinction. The AP® School Honor Roll recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results for students while broadening access. Schools can earn this recognition annually based on criteria that reflect a commitment to increasing college-going culture, providing opportunities for students to earn college credit, and maximizing college readiness. Bayside had 67% of seniors who took at least one AP exam during high school, 62% of seniors scoring a three or higher on at least one AP exam, and 23% of seniors who took five or more AP exams At Bayside, we are proud to offer 15 AP courses over 24 sections of classes with 11 teachers. “AP represents an opportunity for students to stand out to colleges, earn college credit and placement, and potentially boost their grade point averages,” said Trevor Packer, head of the AP program. “The school have shown that they can expand access to these college-level courses and still drive high performance – they represent the best of our AP program.” College Board’s Advanced Placement® Program (AP®) enables students to pursue college-level studies—with the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both—while still in high school. Through AP courses in 38 subjects, each culminating in a challenging exam, students learn to think critically, construct solid arguments, and see many sides of an issue—skills that prepare them for college and beyond. Baldwin County High Lady Tigers Flag Football

Baldwin County High School Lady Tigers celebrated an historic win over Leflore High School after besting the Lady Rattlers 35-12. This marked the Lady Tigers first win in its first-ever flag football league game. Girls flag football is one of the latest sanctioned championship sports in the Alabama High School Athletic Association. Teams from across the state have formed in schools and the first series of games began this month. Coach Tabetha Davis helped recruit players for the newly-formed BCHS team and said they have worked hard to prepare for the inaugural season. “These girls have gone out of their comfort zones to participate in a new sport that only one other Baldwin County school is doing and I couldn’t be more proud of them,” she said. Joining Davis on the sidelines are Coaches Michael Hill and Glenn Ray. The Lady Tigers had an impressive start to the season with a strong effort of every team member, Ray said. “The defense was led by standout performances from Stori Palmer and Talajia Brown. The offense played well and was led by the strong arm of Ryann Wallace and the receiving talents of Karsyn Barnett and La’Mya Hicks.”

Congratulations to four Fairhope High School seniors who have made a PERFECT score on their ACT tests: Payton Null, Jack McKenzie, Tucker Goodin and Noah Sugg. These incredible young men are headed to bright futures in engineering, medicine, and entrepreneurship. Each of these scholars is very involved in school, takes part in the IB programme or Advanced Placement courses, band, school clubs or organizations, as well as being involved in the community. “The students took the ACT in March 2023 while in their Junior year. This is the first time in Fairhope High history to have four students who have had a perfect score on the ACT,” said Cammie Adams, Counselor, Fairhope High. Congratulations. Unsurprisingly, a full 36 is the rarest score of all-just 0.250% of all test takers earned a perfect ACT score. Roughly three times more students earned the next-highest score of 35; however, this is still a very rare score that just 0.775% of test takers earned. 32

Boy Scout Troop 78 Recognizes New Eagle Scouts

Boy Scout Troop 78 has three new Eagle Scouts in its membership: Mason Smith, Cooper Redmon and Drew Albritton. All three were recognized tonight by the Bay Minette City Council for their achievement. Drew Albritton was unable to attend the meeting but will also receive the commendation. As part of their requirements to reach the rank of Eagle, a Scout must earn 21 merit badges, 12 of which are specified and the others are electives. The Scouts must also serve in leadership positions in the troop and plan, develop, organize and carry out a service project. For his Eagle project, Drew constructed two flag retirement boxes that have been placed at Bay Minette Fire Station and First Presbyterian Church. These are depositories for flags that are worn and need to be retired by the Boy Scouts. Cooper and Mason worked in tandem to plan, fundraise, and install an 18-basket disc golf course at Baldwin County High School. Cooper completed the first nine goals and Mason worked to install the back nine baskets of the course. This project was made possible through donations from the City and school. The disc golf course is open for public use after school hours. (Side note: This marks the third Eagle Scout in the Smith family. Mason’s two older brothers have already completed the process. Hunter Smith earned the distinction in 2016. His Eagle Project was the restoration of the outdoor classroom at Baldwin County High School. Tanner Smith became an Eagle Scout in 2020. He spearheaded the planning and construction of this arbor and swing at Blackburn Park as part of his Eagle Scout project.)

November might be known to usher in the cooler temps here on the Gulf Coast, but this month’s Dinner’s Ready feature is the perfect throwback to the summer season. Joanna Bass and her family share one of their favorites - seafood poke bowls! “At the beginning of the COVID pandemic, we had a neighbor who did a lot of commercial fishing for local restaurants. Once many of the restaurants went to takeout only, he had a surplus of fish and was giving all of the neighborhood fresh tuna because he could not sell it,” shared Joanna. “He gave my husband some one afternoon, and I started googling what we should do with it. I came across a random poke bowl recipe, so I just tweaked it to my liking, and it has since been a staple for dinner at our house.” Joanna has been fortunate to be a stay-at-home mom to her daughters, Anna Katherine (11) and Sadie (8). Her husband of 15 years, Brad, is in the pharmaceutical industry. “My husband travels a good bit for work, so I try my best to stay organized, plan meals, and manage the busy after-school schedule,” Joanna shared. “I find so much joy in being a mother to my girls, and they keep me on my toes!” During the day, Joanna is very active in volunteering with the Spanish Fort Elementary PTA and keeping herself physically and mentally healthy. Then, in the afternoon, she shifts gears and makes the girls’ after-school schedule her priority. Anna Katherine is active in basketball, volleyball, and tennis, while Sadie is in dance, cheer, and tumbling. Eastern Shore Parents I November 2023

“I have always felt so fortunate to have the opportunity to stay home with both of my girls. It truly is a gift to have this time with them,” said Joanna. Keeping the girls healthy is a major priority for Joanna. Not only is it essential for them to stay active, but she also believes that instilling healthy eating habits now will benefit them all their lives. Joanna said, “I have always taken my children’s health seriously and tried to teach them the importance of eating healthy and taking care of their bodies.” This poke bowl recipe is a perfect example of how Joanna encourages the girls to eat. It’s a quick and easy meal but still delicious, fresh, and full of vegetables and healthy protein.

• Steamed edamame • Spicy Mayo • Kinder’s teriyaki sauce • Optional: Cilantro, lime and panko crumbs

Directions: 1. Chop cucumbers, carrots, avocado and green onions. Set aside. 2. Season tuna or shrimp with garlic powder, onion powder, and salt and pepper. Add a bit of soy sauce if you like. 3. Heat 1-2 tbsp sesame oil in a pan at medium-high heat and sear each side of the tuna to desired temp. I prefer tuna rare, with just a slight sear on the outside. Slice into thin strips. If you opted for shrimp, cook through. Set either protein aside. 4. In a bowl, add a scoop of rice and a splash of rice vinegar for flavor. Add tuna or shrimp and then top with veggies, sesame seeds, edamame, soy sauce and any combination of sriracha, spicy mayo and teriyaki. I like a little of each! This is a versatile recipe and can be tweaked any way you choose!

Joanna’s Poke Bowls Ingredients: • Ahi tuna or shrimp • Cucumber • Carrots • Avocado • Sesame seeds • Green onion • Jasmine rice (cooked) • Sriracha • Soy sauce Gabriele has been married to her husband Daniel for 17 years. Together they have three incredible children – two boys, ages 16 and nine, and a sweet girl who will be two in August. Gabriele is a full-time Sales Director for Mary Kay Cosmetics. When she isn’t spending time with family or building her business, she supports her husband who is the Lead Pastor and Planter of Forward Church in Gulf Shores.

We’ve all heard the adage that laughter is the best medicine. But does laughing actually have health benefits?

pa ea pa ing for loo

It does!

pra Eastern Shore Parents I November 2023

46

om

Some studies show that laughing has real health benefits. These benefits include increasing the circulation of antibodies in the bloodstream, reducing stress hormones and pain, as well as improving general mood. We could all use an extra dose of laughter!

The benefits of laughter

Yes, cardio and a good workout will help your heart. But did you know that when you laugh, your heart rate increases? Heavier laughter causes deeper breaths. Taking deeper breaths increases your heart rate even more. It might not be a rigorous 7-mile run, but it’s something! A few boisterous laughs to help prevent heart disease? Yes, please. The benefits of laughter aren’t just limited to heart health, though. Laughing can help keep us healthy in many ways. According to the Mayo Clinic’s article “Stress relief from laughter? It’s no joke,” laughter has both long-term and short-term benefits.

Short-term benefits of laughter:

Relieves tension. Activates and relieves your stress response. Stimulates organs. Laughter is beneficial to us right now, so get to it! Laughing in your day-to-day activities can help relieve your stress and tension. It can even help in relationships and in the workplace.

Long-term benefits of laughter: Improves your mood. Helps heart health. Helps with pain relief. Increases satisfaction. Benefits mood disorders such as depression and anxiety.

The long-term benefits of laughing are impactful. Laughing more benefits us not just physically, but mentally too. It helps us live in a more fulfilling way and truly helps contribute to a better quality of life.

Kids and the benefits of laughter

Kids are always laughing. And we parents can facilitate even more of it. It’s easy to get caught up in the mundane of parenthood—work, chores, errands, cleaning, maintaining a house and family—and forget how important having fun and letting loose with our kids is. Even though it’s the most basic practice, laughter doesn’t always come

as easily to parents as it does to kids. It’s easy to forget to laugh and have fun with our kids. We’re all guilty of it. Let’s make some intentional time to laugh with them every day. Check out these helpful ways to gear up the giggles.

Ways to laugh more with our kids: Buy a joke book. Try silly challenges. See who can make the silliest faces. Play tickle monster. See who can make the best accent. Guess that sound/smell. Watch a funny video. See who can keep a straight face the longest. Play charades. Do some silly tongue-twisters. Take silly pictures.

In the age of technology, we have plenty of access to filters and ways to alter pictures. Kids usually think silly phone filters are pretty hilarious. Adults, too. Can you lick your elbow? Or figure out what someone is saying with a mouth full of marshmallows? These things may sound silly, but that’s the point! Let loose. Make funny faces or noises. Don’t be afraid to be silly with your kids. After all, it’s good for you!

Does laughter have to be genuine to be beneficial?

Studies show even fake laughing can bring the benefits of actually laughing. In fact, more often than not, fake laughing leads to genuine smiles. Even if you’re just being supportive of a cheesy joke. The muscles used to smile or laugh tell our brain to feel those things. So much so that even a forced smile can trick our brains. Even if our brain doesn’t realize we’re just pretending, it still reaps the health benefits of actual laughter. In this case, fake it till you make it, right?

How to laugh more

By now, you know that laughter is really some excellent medicine. You know ways we can laugh more with our kids, and that laughter really has some power to make us feel happier, healthier and more at ease. But especially on days we don’t want to, how can we laugh more?

Be intentional

Tell yourself that you’re going to laugh out loud at least once a day then make it 47

www.facebook.com/easternshoreparentsmagazine

happen. And remember, even if you have to fake it, that still counts.

Ask a friend to help

Chances are you’re not alone in your struggle to laugh more. Don’t feel silly! Make a plan or a pact with a friend to check in with each other on how your goal to laugh more is going. Maybe even make a plan to do your laughing together.

Start with a smile

Are you getting dressed for the morning? Do it smiling. In the grocery store? Smile at three people. Waiting for the microwave? Smile at your reflection. It may feel silly, but smiling is the gateway to laughter—and you have to start somewhere!

Spend some time watching other people being funny

Instead of just scrolling your social media feed, try watching a funny video. Search for some stand-up comedy routines and watch those. Some people make a living being funny so that you’ll laugh more.

Be more present

Most of the time, there are funny things happening around us. Maybe we just miss them. So put down your phone. Take some deep breaths. Dinner and chores will still be there waiting. Enjoy where you’re at and be ready and willing to laugh—with your kids, at your dog, over a stranger (Just maybe don’t tell them you’re laughing at them— that’d be embarrassing!). The world is full of things that make us smile. Notice those things. They could even make you healthier in more ways than one! ESP

Kailyn Rhinehart writes from Warrensburg, Missouri. She lives with her husband and two small children and could definitely stand to laugh a little more.

One of my favorite childhood stories is Laura Ingalls Wilder’s account of the Christmas when Mr. Edwards braved a snowstorm to bring gifts to the family. He had sweet potatoes for Ma in one pocket, and gifts for Laura and Mary in another—a tin cup for each of them, plus a penny and a peppermint stick. The girls were thrilled. Would our children be content with such simple gifts today? Not likely. It’s a challenge to raise thankful children in our consumer-driven culture, but it’s a challenge we can meet. We can train our children in the fine art of having enough.

Projects for Your Generous Family Allow children to do chores to earn money for the purpose of giving to a worthy cause. Adopt a needy family through a local agency and meet their holiday needs. Work as a family to earn money to donate to a specific family-selected charity. Make the decision to sort through old clothing, toys and other possessions to “pare down” possessions and live with less. Take the entire family to a shelter or group home and help serve a meal.

Spectacular

Decide how to spend vacation time with an emphasis on enjoying one another without excess financial drain. Regularly plan family fun times including games, music, food, work projects and other inter-generational or extended family activities. At meal times make it a point to discuss the “fine art of having enough.” What does it look like in real life? What are the distinctions between wants and needs? 2,000 sq. ft. Plant the Seeds: Teach your values

Agree on the values you wish to teach your children and encourage them in everyday living—in work and play and how you spend your time. Those lessons begin in the nursery and continue to adulthood. In the book Just Moms, Conveying Justice in an Unjust World, Marta Oti Sears writes about a project her seven-year-old daughter took on one Christmas. The year before, she’d participated in a project to give a farm animal to a needy community overseas but

originaloysterhouse.com/banquet | 251-753-5813 51

www.facebook.com/easternshoreparentsmagazine

this year, said her daughter, “I want to give the whole farm!” The whole farm was a group of animals costing in excess of $2000. Marta outlines her family’s journey through, “Can we really do it?” to “Yes, we did it with the help of friends and family.” You can bet the family had planted those seeds in their daughter’s heart at an early age and as a result they’ll all treasure the memory forever.

Water: Tell Your Stories

Most of us have stories from our family’s history documenting a much simpler lifestyle. My father received only one gift his entire childhood. It was a sled made by his father. His was a North Dakota farm family working hard to make a simple living, and gifts were not expected. Knowing his father took the time to make the sled for him made it more than special. When my own children had questions about the concepts of rich and poor we came up with a saying that covered our philosophy of family life. It was, “We’re rich in love.” The children knew we gave gifts to those less fortunate. They knew we had enough to share with others in times of need. The message they received was the truth––we had all we needed and enough left over to be generous. We were content. What true stories of simpler times do you have to share with your kids?

Feed and Prune: Model a Thankful Lifestyle

Children may learn by hearing stories, but they’ll take to heart the things they see with their own eyes and actually experience. Have a family meeting and talk about the choices you make. Explain why you make certain purchases, what you give to others and why you shop for bargains. Why do you choose certain family activities and not others? When do you refrain from spending? Does fun always require spending a lot of money? Are there opportunities for your family to give time or money to help others? Model the decision-making process and include the children.

Reap the Reward: A Thankful Family in Action

The benefit of careful planting, watering and pruning is a healthy family with thankful children. You’ll have kids who understand life beyond their own wants and needs. A thankful heart doesn’t just happen, it’s taught over time. Living out the values of a thankful heart in day to day family life isn’t easy in our consumer-driven world. We have to say no to the want-more, have-more cycles so many families embrace. But we can do it, because it’s the right thing to do. So go ahead and plant, water, feed and prune. Your family will thrive when you teach them to have thankful hearts. ESP

We’ve all seen it—the parent standing on the sidelines criticizing the decisions made by coaches and officials, yelling at his own child for making a mistake, hurling rude remarks at the opposing team, or always placing blame. There’s no question, winning is rewarding and boosts self-esteem. However, well-meaning parents are sometimes so caught up in the competition that they lose sight of the real value of sports. Winning is not just being the victor of a game. It’s becoming the best allaround person one can be. Children who carry this with them will be the ones to prevail. What’s in losing? Plenty. It teaches lessons in perseverance, humility, respect, and acceptance of defeat. What does losing mean? It means to come out second best. Defeat is not a failure. A child or parent who walks away satisfied, whether victorious or not, is the real winner. What else do sports offer? Opportunities to build friendships, lessons on the importance of rules, fairness and honesty, anger management and leadership skills, and how to work as a team. In short, sports teach valuable life principles that will be of immense value in the years to come.

12 Tips For Supporting Your Child 1) Make the most of your child’s involvement by showing your support and what it means to be a good sport. 2) Avoid pointing out your child’s mistakes or criticizing them. This only serves to make kids feel worse. Your child is most likely already aware of the error. 3) Practice with your child, but don’t push. Offer pointers and demonstrate proper techniques, but allow mistakes to go without frequent correction. 4) Praise your child’s efforts. 5) Allow coaches and officials to do their jobs. If you feel an error was made, remember it’s a tough job, and we all make mistakes. 6) Cheer on your child and her team. 7) Don’t put down the other team’s players, and be courteous and respectful of the other team’s fans.

8) When talking with your child about a game, point out specific displays of sportsmanship that took place to show the difference between being a good sport and a poor one.

sport. If a child is struggling with sportsmanship, look for opportunities to help her brush up on her skills, and reward accordingly as reinforcement.

9) If your child isn’t enjoying the sport, don’t force him to stay in it. For many children, team sports aren’t the answer. Help find another activity or a solo sport that is more suited to him.

11) Acknowledge and show interest in team members whose abilities don’t stand out.

10) Set up a sportsmanship recognition program for your child’s team offering Certificates of Outstanding Sportsmanship to players who set examples of being a good 61

12) Don’t place blame when the team loses. ESP

Unwrapping the Debate: The Pros and Cons of Gifting Your Child a Device and Social Media

The holiday season is upon us, and I don’t know about you, but I find myself missing the good old days of toy cars and Barbies as Christmas gifts. They were simple, less stress-inducing gifts. Instead, we face the common question: Should we give our child a device and social media for Christmas? Giving them social media as a “gift” may sound strange, but I have spoken with many kids asking for access to social media as their “gift.” And while the allure of the latest gadgets and online connectivity is undeniable, it’s essential to consider the potential benefits and drawbacks before deciding. On one hand, providing your child with a device and access to social media can open up a world of opportunities. I discuss negatives frequently here, but let me mention some positives. In today’s digital age, children and teens must develop technological literacy and familiarity with online platforms. With the proper guidance and supervision, social media can serve as a tool for learning, creativity, and social interaction. There are some devices and social media that can offer educational benefits. Numerous apps, websites, and online resources are designed specifically to enhance children’s learning experiences. The digital realm can foster intellectual growth and expand kids’ knowledge base, from Eastern Shore Parents I November 2023

interactive educational games to virtual museums and art platforms. Social media platforms can also facilitate connections and friendships. They allow children to communicate with their peers, express their thoughts, and share their accomplishments. In an increasingly globalized world, social media can help children develop a sense of community and cultural understanding, building bridges across geographical boundaries. These connections need to be monitored to ensure that your child connects in a positive, appropriate manner. Positives aside, it is crucial to acknowledge the potential drawbacks of gifting your child a device or social media. One of the main concerns is the risk of excessive screen time and its impact on physical and mental health. Spending extended hours glued to screens can lead to sedentary behavior, poor sleep patterns, and even behavioral issues. Parents must establish healthy boundaries and ensure their child engages in a balanced lifestyle. Another concern is online safety. The internet is a vast and unpredictable space, and children can be vulnerable to cyberbullying, inappropriate content, and online predators. As parents, we are responsible for educating our children about online safety measures, monitoring their online activities, and establishing parental controls to mitigate these risks. 68

Social media can sometimes foster unrealistic expectations and a sense of constant comparison. The curated nature of social media feeds can contribute to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem, particularly among impressionable young minds. Parents need to foster open conversations about self-worth, critical thinking, and the importance of distinguishing between online life and real-life experiences. In other words, the 30-second clips or quick images they see do not indicate everyday, all-day real life. So, should you give your child a device and social media for Christmas? Ultimately, it depends on several factors, including your child’s age, maturity level, and your ability to establish healthy boundaries and provide adequate guidance. If you decide to proceed, consider setting clear rules and limitations on screen time, promoting a healthy balance between online and offline activities. Engage in open discussions with your child about online safety, responsible digital citizenship, and maintaining a positive and authentic online presence. By being proactive and involved in your child’s digital journey, you can help them navigate the online world safely and responsibly.
