If you are a parent, it is bound to happen at some point. In public, your child does or says something that makes your eyes widen, and you immediately want to hide in embarrassment. For some, it may be walking past the wine aisle and your child announcing loudly, “Don’t you need some Mommy juice?” For me, one instance included a four-year-old and a four-letter word. To set the stage, you need to know that we had a wonderful but frustrating dog who loved to run out the door any chance she got. The dog aggravated my husband to no end, and when she would escape, he tended to use an expletive. Lo and behold, one afternoon, while standing on the front porch with my daughter and neighbor, the dog got out, and my precious little four-year-old in her big pink bow and smocked dress said, “Mom, there goes the ____ dog!” I was so embarrassed!

As I said, it happens to all of us, be it a child repeating words that should not be repeated or telling an embarrassing story at school. But what should we do when that happens? Sarah Lyons gives us some polite and strategic ideas in this month’s feature, Solutions to Sticky Situations. Naturally, these are not our proudest parenting moments, but one day, depending on the circumstance, you may be able to look back on them and laugh.

As our kids age, we don’t get to put sticky situations behind us. We will constantly have situations we need help navigating. We set rules and boundaries to clarify our expectations and protect our children, but there will always be some circumstances that we may not have covered, or maybe we just got a little lax over time. Screen time and video game time are issues that can definitely slip up on us. We allow an extra 20 minutes on a special occasion that turns into two special occasions, and before you know it, your child is spending way more time on gaming/screens than you intended. Again, it happens to all of us, especially if you are monitoring multiple children. Writer Cheryl Maguire is sharing some tools we can use to help our children spend less time on screens and explore other interests in her feature Parenting the Video Game Fanatic: How To Encourage Other Interests.

With summer right around the corner, summer camps are the perfect way to help children find and explore new interests. Avoid Making Assumptions

When was the last time you examined any assumptions you have made about your children? If you have not done this recently, follow the advice of Alan Alda, who said, “Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won’t come in.” Just as termites destroy homes, unquestioned assumptions destroy relationships.

As parents, we must stop making assumptions that imply meaning to behavior and complete false narratives. To stop the toxic practice of assuming, we must exercise our ability to see another person’s perspective and openly communicate even when something seems obvious. Empathy is the affective process that enables us to connect with how another person is feeling. If I notice a child sitting in the corner crying, empathy allows

negative emotion. In contrast, perspectivetaking is the cognitive process of correctly comprehending a circumstance through another person’s viewpoint. When adults make dangerous assumptions, it tends to be in perspective-taking.

Imagine all the assumptions you may make about the child in the corner crying. For example, you may think the child is sad, in pain, or overly sensitive. Without taking perspective, you may choose to act inappropriately based on your assumption. When we make assumptions without taking the time to communicate effectively, we make mistakes that hurt relationships.

I vividly remember getting sent to bed early for “pouting” in the 4th grade. My teacher moved me from the front of the classroom to the last row. I was heartbroken to be moved away from my friends and terrified to tell my parents because I thought I had done something

At the end of the night, I explained my angst when my mother stopped making assumptions about the cause of my “pouting” and helped me feel safe enough to talk. She helped me understand various other perspectives, “Maybe another student could not see or hear and needed to be moved forward. Maybe another student was getting in trouble in the back and needed to be closer to the teacher.” This was a “gold-star” moment in my mother’s parenting. Not only did she take the time to help me feel better, but she also modeled perspective-taking and created a bonding opportunity.

How often do we make assumptions about our children? You can only correctly take perspective if you have all the information. Find the right time and ask the hard questions before creating a narrative about your child that may not be true. Don’t make assumptions. Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want.

Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

Eastern Shore Repertory Theatre Presents CATS

The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year – the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.

CATS, one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history, received its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981 where it played for 21 record-breaking years and almost 9,000 performances. Since its world premiere, CATS has been presented in over 30 countries, has been translated into 15 languages and has been seen by more than 73 million people worldwide. Both the original London and Broadway cast recordings won Grammy Awards for Best Cast Album.

Eastern Shore Repertory Theatre will bring CATS to the 11th Annual Theatre on the Bluff on May 2 - 4, 2024 at Henry George Bluff Park in Fairhope. The production is directed by Erin Langley with choreography by Matthew Kiel.

All shows begin at 7:30 p.m., and gates will open at 6:30 each evening. Patrons should bring their own blanket or lawn chair, and picnics are encouraged. Concessions will also be available for purchase.

Golf Cart Safety for You and Your Kids

Hey guys! I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy. Living here in Baldwin County for quite a while, I have noticed one thing that is becoming more and more popular... golf carts on the road. Today, we will talk about the different types of carts, some common sense rules for the road, and some potential safety hazards for you and your children.

In 2016, Baldwin County voters decid ed to allow more freedom in using golf carts on city streets and left the enforcement of type and how to each municipality. So, let’s talk about the different types. Of course, there are your old-fashioned regular golf carts with golf cart bag holders on the very back. These typically do not go very fast and usually do not have seat belts, blinkers, rearview mirrors, or other safety measures. Next are a lot of modified golf carts from the original types. Most have bigger tires, four to eight seats, seat belts, and maybe some rearview mirrors. Then, there are electric carts that have VIN numbers and tags, and they have all the safety measures you would have if

you were driving an actual car. Some are four-seaters and can go 20-25 mph; some have very sturdy frames and can go up to 40 mph!

So, regardless of the style of cart someone has, there is one unifying theme. In a motor vehicle collision, the car, truck, or SUV will always win; therefore, the golf cart passengers are at risk! So what can you do? First, any golf cart should be driven by someone with a driver’s license. Yes, it’s fun for the kids to cruise around the neighborhood, but they often do not look out for other drivers, rarely buckle up, and do not follow the road rules. I have seen golf carts driving around the Eastern Shore loaded down with kids (most of whom are not buckled up) and flying down the road. Unfortunately, golf carts can flip easily. If you have one with many kids loaded up and they turn quickly, it will flip.

Next, check with your local police for what safety measures your golf cart needs and where it is safe to drive. The most common measures are seat belts, blinkers, rearview mirrors, brake lights, windshield wipers, reflectors, parking brakes, and often

a VIN number with a tag. Depending on the style of cart you have, most will also need to have a minimum threshold speed of 20 mph with a max of 25 mph. This ensures that if you are driving on a city street, you do not impede traffic by going too slow and don’t go too fast to endanger yourself or others. Finally, let’s talk about things that can hurt you or your child. First, unless your cart is made to drive above 25 mph, do not go on a road with a speed limit of more than 35 mph. And please stay off the four-lane! I’ve seen golf carts driving down and crossing Greeno Road. Not only is it dangerous, but you will get a ticket in a heartbeat. Use common sense- buckle up, use your blinkers or arms to signal turns, check your blind spots, and no sharp turns. Of course, we worry about our kids, but I’ve seen adults act dangerously on golf carts, so be a good example to your family.

Mrs. Nobles is now a third-grade teacher at Daphne East Elementary School, and she is paying it forward. She was nominated as the Eastern Shore Parents Teacher of the Month by several individuals.

“Mrs. Wynn Nobles is so caring towards her students,” describes Mandy Warren, who has a student in her classroom. “She goes the extra mile to be sure they comprehend what they are learning and keeps parents informed phenomenally.”

Mrs. Nobles teaches her class early on in the year that they are a family and implements core values to help establish that bond.

Mrs. Nobles has been teaching for 15 years and has taught first, second, and third grade at a few different schools in the Baldwin County School System. Her ultimate goal is to become a Reading Intervention Teacher.

“I am from a family of educators. My parents are amazing and have been the biggest influences in my life,” said Mrs. Nobles. “My mother was an elementary school principal and teacher. My father worked in higher education for the University of South Alabama. My sister, Mary Catherine, is a former teacher and the principal at Orange Beach Elementary School. I am very proud to be a teacher. It feels like a calling to me.”

Wynn Nobles has been married to her husband, Stewart, for 26 years. They have three daughters, all in their twenties, who are excelling in their early careers and educational pursuits. They also have two dogs that they love to spoil. The Nobles enjoy spending time with their dogs, cooking, traveling, watching SEC Football, and long walks on Mobile Bay.

Bayshore Senior Signs Letter of Intent

BCS senior Baxley Blanton puts pen to paper on his National Letter of Intent to run cross country for the University of Faulkner. Bax became Bayshore’s first athlete to sign with a college for cross-country.

NBCEE 2024 Year of the Year Awards

Career Fair

Thank you to all the community members who showed up to share stories about their careers with the Daphne Middle School students. The Daphne Middle School students visited with community and business leaders and learned about the skills they need to be successful in the workplace. Daphne Middle’s enrichment teachers and PE coaches did an incredible job preparing for the first annual career fair and look forward to making this a yearly partnership with the business community in Daphne.

Daphne High Participate in Mentor and Scholarship Program

Congratulations to Daphne High School Trojan Theatre students Madison Lang, Summer Theimonge, Zi Ling Pan, and Red Zellner who were chosen by Mark Heller of the Handshake Foundation and Theatre 98 to participate in a special mentor and scholarship program. Each of these talented ladies will be working with mentors to get handson experience working in various areas of technical theatre. They will also each earn a $250 scholarship at the end of the program to use at any college of their choosing. Congratulations!

Fairhope East Student Wins Poster Contest

Fairhope East Elementary School’s creative student Joss Williams won the Arbor Day poster contest for FEES and was the presented with an award for the City of Fairhope’s Arbor Day celebration! Go, Joss!

Belforest Elementary Display Speaking and Leadership Skills

The Belforest Elementary School Student Lighthouse Team toured teachers from other schools around and spoke about how Belforest tracks their Fact Fluency school-wide goal. They also had two amazing 5th graders speak to a room full of teachers about how they personally track their Wildly Important Goals. All six students showed such wonderful speaking and leadership skills!

Bayshore Student Named National Merit Finalist

Congratulations to BCS senior Cole Edwards, who was just named a National Merit Finalist and has advanced to the next step of the scholarship competition. As one of the 15,000 students selected for this honor, Cole has the opportunity to become a National Merit Scholar, which represents the top .5% of all students who took the PSAT.

Foley Robotics Volunteer Recognized

The Foley feeder pattern would like for everyone to take a moment to thank and honor the robotics volunteer & mentor Larry Bender, who is a real value to Baldwin County Schools. Larry has been volunteering his time and expertise on STEM and robotics in the Foley feeder pattern for the last decade. He came in almost every day for most of that time to Foley Middle School, Foley High School, Foley Elementary, Mathis, Magnolia, and Swift. He didn’t even let his Parkinson’s slow him down. Bender worked with the teachers and kids, helping them with VEX IQ and VEX VRC robotics. He organized parts, classrooms, robotics kits, and teams, built example robots, and helped kids day after day, week after week. He completely designed and built a working robotics classroom and taught Foley High’s Robotics teacher Thomas Thorjusen how to organize tools, inventory and bin parts, make team kits, and how to stay organized as the year progressed. Larry also went to all of the competitions, including the Alabama VEX State Championships a few years back. He ran scoring and did inspections on our tournaments. Larry also owns over $10k in robotics parts and kits that he has accumulated and bought over time and was trying to upgrade and update. He has let the kids use them and supplement parts to expand our capabilities. Unfortunately, Larry has been slowed down by health issues and is now going back to his summer home to be with his family. Thank you, Mr. Bender for your dedication to BCBE schools and the Robotics programs.

Belforest Students Visit Pelican’s Nest Science Lab

The Belforest Elementary School 1st graders enjoyed hands on learning at the Pelican’s Nest Science Lab. The students learned about the brown pelican, animal habitats, and even brushed up on their map skills! The engaging day was not only spent in the lab; the children were able to get their feet wet in the Mobile Bay while using dip nets to find marine life and treasures! A picnic lunch was enjoyed at the Fairhoper’s Community Park and dessert was served at Mr. Gene’s Beans! Meeting state standards has never been so much fun!

Foley High Employee Receives Employee of the Month

Congratulations to Sherry Gartman the March 2024 Baldwin Proud Employee of the Month. Sherry is the bookkeeper at Foley High and was surprised today with the award recognition. The Baldwin County Human Resources department is honoring teachers and staff with the monthly Baldwin Proud Awards. The #baldwinproud award will recognize a Baldwin County Board of Education employee who has been nominated by a peer, student, parent, or community member as a champion employee. #baldwinproud employees demonstrate the qualities of kindness, leadership, and service to others.

DAR Good Citizen

The Zachariah Godbold Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, recognized Alfonzo Jamal Griffin as the DAR Good Citizen. He is a senior at Baldwin County High School.

Alfonzo was selected in recognition of his having exhibited, in an exemplary manner, in his home, school, and community, the qualities of a good citizen: Dependability, Service, Leadership, and Patriotism.

Alfonzo received the DAR Youth Citizenship Award as a ninth grader in the 2020-2021 school year. How appropriate that he is being recognized once again as an outstanding student leader, accomplished teammate, and treasured friend. Alfonzo will be honored as the school’s DAR Good Citizens Award recipient during the chapter’s April Student Awards Chapter Meeting and within the school’s Awards Ceremony later in the school year. Alfonzo is the son of Dominique and Alfonzo Griffin.

Members Gain Spots in National Honor Choir

Congratulations to BCS Chapel Choir members Caleb Haeger and Zeke Dernlan for winning spots in the ACCS National Honor Choir, organized by the New Saint Andrews Conservatory of Music. This June, they will head to Atlanta for a week-long camp and then perform at the ACCS conference. We’d also like to congratulate BCS choir members Jeffrey Johnson and Aiden Morel, who competed in the regional Gulf Coast Steinway Society Piano Competition. Aiden won third place in his division and is headed to New York City in June to perform at Carnegie Hall!

Participate in Youth Legislature

Bayside Academy took a group of students to Montgomery’s 75th Youth Legislature Conference at the end of February. Youth Legislature is Alabama’s premiere Mock Government conference. Students from across the state come together to debate legislation, argue appellate cases to the Supreme Court, lobby for and against bills, and cover the politics of the day through the media.

In the first–year chamber, Bayside had nine students participate with freshmen Farrah Lane, Anna Flynn Hughes, and Tbug Baker winning Outstanding Delegate awards and freshman Lee Ginger having the first bill passed for a Bayside Delegation. Junior Jacob Stallworth served as a Justice on the Supreme Court hearing and deliberating on the constitutionally of student bills. Finally, junior a leading member of the Senate and was selected as an alternate delegate to the Youth Conference on National Affairs this summer in North Carolina.

Finally, all thirteen Bayside students (freshmen Tbug Baker, Ava Bindon, Nate Bullock, Lee Ginger, Anna Flynn Hughes, Farrah Lane, Cruz McMurry, Dori Small, Penny Snell; sophomore Colt Hancock; and juniors Montgomery Beall, Abby Schoensiegel, and Jacob Stallworth) showed great poise and courage in debate, and, more importantly, did an excellent job of representing Bayside as a delegation through their kindness and respect for others.

Students Compete at New Balance and Nike Indoor Nationals

On March 8, Bayside Academy junior Madeline Dudley competed in high jump at the Nike Indoor Nationals at The Armory in New York, New York, while 7th grader Avery Therrell competed in the 800m run at the New Balance Indoor Nationals in Boston, Massachusetts. Avery also competed in the one-mile run. Avery placed 20 th in the Girls 800m Middle School event with a personal-best time of 2:24.12 and in the Top 30 of the Girls 1 Mile Middle School event with a personal-best time of 5:33.01. For both events, she competed in a national field of more than 80 elite runners. Madeline finished in the Top 25 of the Girls High Jump Emerging Elite when she cleared 1.50 meters (4’11”). We are so proud of both of these outstanding student-athletes!

Christ the King Catholic School Student Honors First

Responders

an 8th grade student at Christ the King Catholic School, delivered 120 Blessing Bag “Survival Kits” on Monday, February 26, on behalf of the school to members of the City of Daphne Police Department to thank the city’s first responders for their service. As part of the Drug Education Council’s Character Counts initiative, Pavao received the Superintendent’s Red Ribbon Leadership Award for Christ the King Catholic School (CTKCS). These student leaders work with their school’s Red Ribbon Coordinator to lead activities on their school campus during Red Ribbon Week in October and are also challenged to plan and execute a community service project to help their peers build a connection to the community and encourage healthy lifestyle choices.

Pavao’s schoolwide community service project coincides with this year’s theme, “We Love Our Veterans & First Responders!” She organized efforts across the entire student body at CTKCS to gather donations of different types of candy and treats to make blessing bag “survival kits” for local law enforcement officers at the City of Daphne Police Department.

“I wanted this project to show our entire school’s appreciation for first responders so I decided Blessing Bags would be the perfect idea,” Pavao said. “Working with everyone on this schoolwide project made me feel like we connected in a meaningful way and for a good cause too. I couldn’t be more proud of all the work we did.”

“We are so proud of Stella’s leadership and our community’s involvement in this service project,” said Christ the King Catholic School Principal Jackie Garlock. “Christ the King Catholic School extends a heartfelt “thank you” to our police officers for their unwavering dedication and service.”

Crazy Socks for Read Across America Day at Swift Elementary

Swift Consolidated Elementary School loved seeing all the crazy socks for Read Across America Day. Thank you, South Baldwin Literacy Council, for reading to all the classes. Silverhill Elementary Receives Grant

Silverhill Elementary School’s fourth-grade team, Mrs. Foley, Mrs. Green, and Mrs. McDoniell received a grant from CBEF for Literacy Landscapes. They will be able to purchase special printers, binding machines, and more to make books that support creative writing!

Mrs. Bowman (librarian), Mrs. Hamby (ESL), and Mrs. Farias (ESL) also received a grant from CBEF to purchase audio books in English and Spanish from VOX.

Jack is an AP Scholar with Honor who has earned a 4.42 weighted GPA while serving as Key Club President, Anchor/ Producer of Admiral TV (Bayside’s student-run TV show), an officer in the National Honor Society, the male lead in the Upper School drama productions for three consecutive years, and as a varsity tennis player. Outside of school, he is a member of the Spanish Fort Junior City Council, completed the Eastern Shore Youth Leadership Academy, participated in the FBI Teen Academy, and serves as a Firefighter Explorer for the City of Spanish Fort. Wendy Rodrigue made a special visit to Rockwell Elementary to walk the halls and enjoy all the fabulous “Blue Dog” themed artwork created by the students at the school. Wendy, the wife of Blue Dog artist George Rodrigue, was overwhelmed with all the beautiful and creative Blue Dog artwork that the students created as part of a schoolwide unit on the culture, music and art of Louisiana. Elberta Students Shine at State Competition

The Elberta Middle School Chapter of FCCLA attended the Alabama FCCLA State Leadership Conference and STAR Events Competition March 6-8. They received the Alabama Prescription for Healthy Living Award for their work bringing awareness to the dangers of vaping. They also achieved the Gold Level of the Alabama Star Chapter Award for having a balanced program of work, participation in state and national leadership events, conducting community service projects, and promoting FCCLA through various public relations efforts.

FCCLA Adviser, Alyssa Corbitt, was also awarded the FCCLA Adviser Mentor award. Eight students competed in the state level of STAR Events and did extremely well! Seven have the opportunity to compete at the national level of competition this summer in Seattle, Washington.

“You will never be ready, so start now,” is the advice given by Jessica Watkins, owner of FIT Fairhope Gym and mom to three awe some kids.

Jessica opened FIT Fairhope Gym in 2019, and her mis sion is to inspire and empower individu als on their fitness journeys, fostering a life-long commitment to sustainable health and well-being. She believes that every step is a step toward a healthier, happier version of you.

Jessica is a native of Mobile, but she ventured to New York and obtained a Master’s Degree in Nutrition and Journalism from New York University. Once she graduated, she was a magazine freelance writer, focusing on fitness tips and recipes. She was also a personal trainer.

“At the time, I personally trained all over Manhattan and then had my first child, Emory. When I had her, I realized how difficult it was for moms to take the time to workout and how hard it was for us

to take time for ourselves. That is when I started FIT Mama Bootcamp. I created it as a community for women to get together

with the common goal of wanting to live healthy and gain confidence after becoming a mom,” shared Jessica. “When I moved back to Alabama, I started FIT Mama Bootcamp, which took off! In addition to FIT Mama Bootcamp, I own FIT Fairhope, a gym offering 50+ classes per week, childcare, and 24/7 access to workouts. It is such a positive community of men and women with good, uncompetitive vibes.”

Broiled Fish and Fresh Tomato Mango Salsa

Ingredients:

• 2 small tomatoes, diced

• 1 mango, diced

• ½ red or yellow bell pepper, diced

• ½ small red onion, chopped

• 2 green onions, chopped

• 1 tbsp. lime juice

• 4 tbsp. cilantro, chopped

• 4 tbsp. parsley, chopped

• sea salt & black pepper

• 4 fish filets, (4.4 oz each) - e.g. tilapia, halibut, redfish, snapper

Directions:

1. In a bowl, mix together the diced tomatoes, mango, bell pepper, red onion, green onions and lime juice to create the salsa.

2. Stir in the chopped cilantro and parsley, then season the salsa to taste with salt and set aside.

This month’s Dinner’s Ready recipe is one of the Watkins family favorites.

“I found something similar in a magazine many years ago, and it kind of evolved from there,” Jessica said. I’m sharing it because my kids love this type of dish. Simply prepared seafood is always a win in my house.”

3. Preheat the broiler (grill) to high and position the rack about 6” from the heat source.

4. Season the fish filets lightly with salt and pepper, place on a foil-lined pan and broil for 5-8 minutes, depending on the thickness of the filets.

5. The fish is ready when it becomes opaque throughout and easily flakes with a fork.

6. Spoon the salsa over the broiled fish filets and serve immediately with white rice or a side of your choice.

Gabriele has been married to her husband Daniel for 17 years. Together they have three incredible children – two boys, ages 16 and nine, and a sweet girl who will be two in August.

“It’s time for karate class,” I said to my 13-year-old son.

“Do I have to go?”

“Yes.”

This has been a common exchange between us for a variety of activities over the past 10 years. He has tried everything from baseball to cooking class—yet nothing holds his interest as much as video games.

Every now and then I wonder if it is worth investing money and time into classes or sports he doesn’t want to participate in. But if I hold off on signing him up for things, he does nothing except play video games until we try something new again. It’s a never-ending cycle.

Are Video Games Healthy?

My son is not an anomaly. According to the Pew Research Center, 72% of teens—and 84% of teen boys—play video games.

There is a lot of conflicting information about video game use, so it can be hard for parents to know what to allow. It’s screen time, of course, but video gaming is often also a social activity played together with friends either in the same room or online. And if it’s a popular pastime among a teen’s peer group, some parents may be inclined to let them play for an unlimited amount of time with their friends.

Playing video games can have positive benefits, says Dr. Larry D. Rosen, a professor at California State University and author of The Distracted Mind. Gaming “can offer some skill-building, including reaction time, executive functioning, and strategic thinking,” says Rosen. He cautions, though, that “playing video games can be very addictive and create problematic thinking, including desensitization to violence.”

Video Game Obsession?

Rosen recommends that video game play should be limited, since research shows physiological arousal increases when playing—and kids need breaks from that. He suggests limiting gaming for teens to 60-90 minutes at a time, even if parents decide to allow more total time daily.

Maria Sanders, a licensed social worker and certified parent coach, also recommends creating clear boundaries with your teen regarding when and how long they are allowed to play. She says an example of

boundaries might be letting teens choose to play an hour of video games either before or after completing homework.

She encourages parents to learn more about their teen’s interest in video games. Sit down and play the games with them. “The child will see that you have an interest in what they are doing,” she says, “and you will learn about why they are so attracted to the game.”

Encouraging Other Activities

Teens should live “balanced lives and not live solely in the video game,” says Sanders. But if your teen doesn’t express interest in anything else, it may be difficult to figure out which activity or sport to encourage. Sanders suggests asking your teen about the type of video games they like to play. Then you might be able to figure out an activity that uses similar skills or gameplay. An avid Fortnite player, for example, might enjoy a laser tag league.

Parents should avoid simply announcing which activities their teen must do. Rosen stresses the importance of including the child in the decision-making process. With your child’s input, create a list of the types of activities they could do at home during unstructured times or when they feel bored. Similarly, involving your child in discussions about organized extracurriculars will prevent them from feeling forced into participating in certain activities.

Stay Positive

Often parents make comments like “video games are a waste of time” or “video games are unhealthy” in an effort to decrease video game use. Rosen says this almost always backfires. Instead, parents could reward the child for responsible behavior. For example, when a child demonstrates that they can stop playing on their own without parent badgering, parents might loosen strict time limits on screen time.

Instead of making negative statements about video games, Sanders says, “The best thing a parent can do is guide their child down a path of self-reflection. Asking questions like, I notice you seem pretty tired after playing video games. How are you feeling? will help your child figure out their own beliefs about video game use.”

Parent negativity can make a teen feel as if they are being judged and misunderstood. Focus on their strengths while

video game— perhaps, for instance, their ability to help a friend get to another level. A parent should notice that ability and point out how it might connect to real-life situations. Next step: Parents can help them get out there and do just that.

Too Many Video Games: When to Worry

Video game addiction is not yet a disorder recognized by the American Psychiatric Association. The World Health Organization, however, recently recognized the existence of “gaming disorder” for the first time. Excessive video game play and other types of addictions do show similar patterns, says Rosen.

Some signs parents should look for are:

• Isolating behavior or ignoring family and friends

• Sneaking video game play at night or at friends’ houses

• Changes in eating or sleeping patterns

• A decline in academic performance or not doing homework

• A need to continue playing video games beyond a time limit

• An interest only in playing video games, at the expense of other activities

• Always thinking about video games

If You’re Not Going All In, Stay Out

Q . I have an idea for a small business I think would be a huge success in my area. How do you feel about me keeping my current day job, and hiring a full-time manager for the business to handle the day-to-day operations, while I do the accounting and oversee things? If it doesn’t break even or better, I can always close it. In my mind, I equate my plan to being like selling real estate on the side, while keeping my regular, full-time job. What are your thoughts?

A. To be honest, I don’t think there’s a high likelihood of success using this model. Unless, of course, you’re willing to devote 40 to 50 hours a week to this new business, in addition to the time you spend at your current job. In my mind, you’d have a better chance of making it

work if you bought an existing business with a manager already in place. That way, at least you wouldn’t have to be so entrepreneurial and constantly involved in things like adjusting the business model, checking prices and dealing with customers.

Honestly? This idea isn’t a lot like real estate at all. Real estate will run itself—for the most part—once you find a tenant. Also, the number of hours you’d have to put into selling real estate on the side is nothing like the time you’d spend getting a new business off the ground.

Here’s the deal. The secret ingredient to your small business success is you. You are the ideas, the passion and the energy. The problem with your plan is that you

are only a small part of the equation. Franchises and chains try to train this kind of stuff into people with pep talks and other forms of motivation, but when something’s your baby, it’s really your baby. You’re going do your best, days, nights and weekends, to grow it properly. You’re going to worry over it constantly, and treat it almost like it’s your very own child.

I love your entrepreneurial spirit, but I’m sorry, I just don’t like this plan. It sounds like your idea is to swing by once in a while, eyeball things and crunch a few numbers. And if that’s the case, I wouldn’t waste my time or money if I were you. You’d probably benefit your community more by just giving what you’d invest in the venture to a good charity.

The average cost of a summer vacation in 2023 was $5606.05 according to data from Squaremouth.com. Ouch! With that knowledge and the rising cost of – well, everything, many families are staying home this year.

Staying home for vacation does not mean mindless scrolling through social media or clicking through TV channels. Instead, make it a time for building fun memories with your family. There are many low-cost ideas for families who prefer to spend their vacation on a budget. Check out some of our ideas:

Go on a factory tour. Many local factories have tours for free or a minimal fee. Our family looks for tours in each town we visit and many within miles of our home. We have enjoyed several automotive manufacturers, candy factories, the Louisville Slugger Museum, Harley Davidson and a local quarry tour. Check out FactoryToursUSA.com for tours in your neighborhood.

Visit a state park. State parks are great places to visit for the day to hike, picnic, fish, boat, swim, camp or learn some local history. Most state parks are free or charge a small parking fee for the day. It is a great way to get outside and recharge in nature. You can also capture wonderful photos of wildlife in action or Mother Nature’s beauty.

Don’t Forget the Souvenirs!

My family always gets a new Christmas ornament when we vacation to commemorate our trip. A staycation should not be any different. Here are a few ideas:

1. Use photos from your staycation to make ornaments, puzzles or collages for the wall.

2. Head to the thrift stores and find items with your town name or sports team.

3. Get a tablecloth and paint with scenes from your week as well as handprints and the date.

Check out the local live theatre. Not only will you find amazing talent in local theatre, but you can also see your favorite plays for a fraction of the price of Broadway. Most venues are small, with 200 or fewer seats, making every seat a good one. Check out college campuses, churches or simply Google “live theatre near me”.

4. Make a time capsule and include pictures, ticket stubs, menus, etc.

5. Create decoupage coasters from menus from the food tour for use on bedside tables.

6. Write down the recipes from the week of favorite meals so everyone will have a copy in the future.

7. Purchase something from the gift shop from your factory tour that can be used daily like a coffee mug.

Try a local food tour. While some cities offer an organized food and history tour with pre-selected restaurants and small plates to try, there is no reason you cannot create your own. The idea is to have a tasting at several restaurants, allowing you to try an appetizer, salad, soup or dessert without having a whole meal. For families, this might be a fun way to taste test a family favorite – pizza, chicken strips or blueberry muffins – and see which one is the best.

More fun with food. Our family vacations always seem to center around food, with everyone always asking about the next meal. If you are trying to keep things within a budget, why not make it a contest? Challenge the kids to make a meal for the family for $10 or create something with your pantry staples. Another option is to try to make something from scratch like pasta or sushi.

Go on a Daycation. Hotels and resorts offer options to use their pools and spas for a limited time during the day, usually 4 to 6 hours, without requiring an overnight stay. Check out the app ResortPass or the website DayUse.com for options near you.

Plan a house swap. If you know another family who is on a budget, this might be a fun activity. Everyone always thinks the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, so why not try it? Swap houses or even swap the kids for the day to plan a day with the other family – meals, activities, etc. Set a budget so everyone is on the same playing field.

Go someplace special for a bargain. Want to try out a new enter tainment venue or get tickets to a major league sporting event? That can be a costly endeavor for a family on a budget. However, new venues often put discounts on Groupon to get more people in the door. GameTime.com has last-minute tickets for a fraction of the price for ven ues trying to fill all the seats.

You’re in public and your child makes an embarrassing comment to someone. They pick their nose while you are eating at a restaurant. They share an embarrassing story about you.

Every parent has been there and most of the time other parents understand the ups and downs of parenting and are willing to be patient, help out, and excuse behaviors that seem impolite or embarrassing. Sticky situations with kids can be difficult to navigate, but there are a few things you can do to make the best of them.

Your child does something rude at a restaurant

You’re eating out and your child does something gross or impolite like burping, picking their nose, or throwing food. Place your hand on the child’s shoulder and quietly ask them to stop the behavior and explain that they are being impolite. If you think their behavior is rooted in attention seeking and is somewhat tolerable, it may be appropriate to simply ignore it. However, if your child persists, it may be best to ask them to take a bathroom break. When you return to the table, try to find something to distract your child. Some parents may bring a tablet, coloring book, or small toys to keep their child busy while waiting for their food but if you find yourself unprepared you can play “I spy” or another guessing game to keep them occupied.

Pro parent tip: Put together a “busy bag” that you can bring to restaurants. Include a few art supplies, small toys, books, magnet toys, or fidgets to keep your child occupied while waiting. To keep your child’s interest, switch out the items often and only allow them to play with it when you are at a restaurant or other situation where they need to be quiet.

Your child makes a rude comment to a stranger

This can be one of the most embarrassing situations for a parent. My cousin once went up to an elderly man and told him, “You are old and will die soon.” If your child makes a comment about someone’s appearance, it’s best to quickly apologize to the person they offended. If appropriate, have your child apologize to them as well. Let your child know that it is never okay to make fun of someone’s appearance or comment on their race, weight, or age. If you feel that your child is simply curious about something and not making the comment rudely, try to take the time, when appropriate, to explain to your child. For example, if your child has a question about why someone is in a wheelchair you could explain that they need it to help them move around.

Pro parent tip: Let your child know that people come in all sizes, shapes, races, and ages. Our differences are what makes us each special. Your child will follow your lead when it comes to accepting others. If you celebrate diversity, they will most likely do the same. Talk to your child about differences and let them know it’s okay to ask questions but never to make fun of others.

Your child has a potty accident in public

During the months of potty training, accidents are likely to happen. It’s best not to make a big production of it and clean it up as quickly as possible. Try not to shame or embarrass your child, which can cause problems long term and even prolong potty training. Potty accidents always seem to happen in the most inconvenient times and places. Ideally you have an extra change of clothes in your car or diaper bag, but if not, it’s okay to leave early or borrow clothes from someone if needed.

Pro parent tip: Keep a stash of wipes and a full change of clothes in a ziploc bag in your car. The bag can be used to bring home dirty clothes as well.

Your child shares embarrassing and private information about you.

“My mom and dad kiss a lot. And I mean a lot!” was what one preschooler told me while I was teaching a Sunday school class. Another child told me how their dad snores and has stinky feet. Young kids

usually don’t have much of a filter and are willing to share private and sometimes embarrassing information with teachers, friends and even complete strangers. In this situation, try to change the subject or turn the comment into a joke. “Well, we do have four kids” was how the kissing couple responded after their child shared that information.

Pro parent tip: When it’s the right time, you can talk to your kids about not sharing private information outside of the family. In the moment, try to turn the moment into a joke. If you brush it off with a laugh, others are more likely to do so.

These sticky situations can be embarrassing, but the good news is, they are common. Often in these instances, you may be able to use humor to distract from the situation or simply apologize and move on. If nothing else, you can wait until your child is a teenager and share some of your own stories that might make them blush now that they are a little older.

AI and the Loss of Truth

In today’s rapidly advancing technological landscape, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful tool that has the potential to revolutionize various aspects of our lives. From assisting with everyday tasks to making groundbreaking scientific discoveries, AI has undoubtedly transformed how we live and work. Our kids are using it daily in classrooms. It is on their phones via the apps they use. However, as AI continues to evolve, there is a growing concern about the potential loss of truth accompanying its widespread adoption.

One of the primary issues surrounding the loss of truth and AI is the rise of deepfake technology. Deepfakes are manipulated videos, images, or audio files that appear very realistic, making it difficult to distinguish between what is real and what is fabricated. With the help of AI algorithms, individuals can create deepfakes that can be used to spread disinformation, deceive the public, and manipulate public opinion. This poses a significant threat to the integrity of information and raises

questions about the authenticity of the content we consume. Not only are adults having a hard time distinguishing between what is real and what is not, but our kids are as well. Couple that with a bit of teenage impulse control, and we are seeing many fake images and content being rapidly sent by kids to one another. There are numerous serious concerns here.

In addition to deepfakes, AIpowered algorithms used by social media platforms and search engines can contribute to the loss of truth. These algorithms are designed to personalize the content we see based on our preferences and interests. While this may seem convenient, it also creates echo chambers, where individuals are only exposed to information that aligns with their existing beliefs and biases. As a result, people are less likely to encounter diverse perspectives and alternative viewpoints, leading to a narrowing of their understanding of the world. This can further reinforce existing prejudices and hinder critical thinking. And as we

know, in order for our kids to grow and learn, they must be exposed to various thoughts and viewpoints. It builds character and empathy, and challenges thought processes.

To address the potential loss of truth associated with AI, it is crucial to prioritize ethical considerations and responsible deployment of AI technologies. This includes developing robust safeguards against deepfakes and disinformation, promoting digital literacy and critical thinking skills, and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability among AI developers and providers. Additionally, efforts should be made to educate our youth on responsible, ethical use of AI.

We must encourage them to think critically and with an open, curious mind. As parents, we must stay up to date on AI to have educated conversations with our kids. Because no matter our thoughts around it, it is here to stay.
