The other night my husband said something to me that really upset me. No, I am not airing dirty laundry, just sharing how one small comment really helped me put things in perspective. You see, things have been a bit hectic over the last few months with selling a house, moving, sending our oldest off to college, and just life in general. So the other night I was frustrated about something (I don’t even remember what it was) and started to vent to Brad. He just looked up at me and said, “You have been complaining a lot lately.” Well, that stopped me in my tracks. I felt horrible. I certainly don’t want to be one of “those” people. You know the kind... they could see a field of flowers and complain about the thorns. They try to defend themselves by saying they are just being realistic, but if they were being realistic they would see they are just harshing everyone’s vibe.

That very moment was a wakeup call. I am generally a Pollyanna, glass-half-full kind of gal, but I had let the silly little stresses of life get the best of me and I was not taking a moment to look around and realize that I have nothing to complain about.

Since then I have made a conscious effort to think of how much I have for which to be grateful. If something comes up that puts a complaining thought in my head, I try to find the blessing in that situation. Sure, at times I have to dig deep (real deep) and get a little creative, but it really works. I have been a lot more cheerful and hopefully more pleasant to be around.

While it makes sense that gratitude should come naturally, we are human and sometimes we take things for granted. It takes a little practice and effort to really foster a thankful heart. With November being the month of Thanksgiving, what a perfect time to start implementing these practices in your home. For ideas, flip to page 42 where you will find How to Build an Uplifting Gratitude Habit in Your Home, by Sandi Schwartz.

Speaking of grateful, I am so very blessed to have a family that gets along really well, meaning family gatherings and the holidays are something we look forward to.

However some people may go in to the holidays with a much different attitude. Maybe you have that crazy uncle who is sure to offend everyone with his political rants or that cousin who constantly talks about her perfectly gifted child as little Susie shatters the crystal with her off-key rendition of the Star Spangled Banner for the third time.

Or maybe you are dealing with something much more serious than just personality annoyances. Whatever the situation, family gatherings can definitely be a hot spot for unwanted drama. If you are going in to the holidays feeling a bit apprehensive, you will find some helpful tips in Kimberley Carter Spivey’s feature, 7 Ways to Lessen Family Conflict During the Holidays, on page 48.

Since we are approaching the holiday season we are excited to provide the 2019 Holiday Happenings Guide beginning on page 52. This will instantly get you in the holiday spirit. It is filled with tree lightings, Santa sightings and all kinds of family friendly events to enjoy. You may even find snow at a few of the events!

As we enjoy November, I hope you will join me in striving for an attitude of gratitude, and as you count your blessings, remember to also be a blessing to others.

The Power of Yes

BE At a checkup, your doctor will inevitably get out that magical little hammer with the rubber tip and knock it around a few times on your knee to check your reflexes. Hard as you may try – the power of the hammer is not to be messed with. It will win. Try as you might to keep your knee from moving – you will fail and your innate reflexes will be victorious every.single.time.

As parents, we have similar reflexes. We can catch a toddler about to fall off of a chair, we can leap into the road and grab a hand faster than any avenger when our little one is in danger, we have supersonic hearing to assess the slightest cough or wheeze in the middle of the night when baby is sick. And these are all great; they help us keep our tiny little humans alive. But I would argue that there are some reflexes that are a bit more unhealthy – namely this: No. Mom can I….No! Dad can I just see…No! Can I…NO! Ahhh the power of no. We can shut down any request, quash any argument, and make our day a whole lot easier just by reflexively and continuously saying no.

Much like you don’t have to tell your knee to kick the doctor, you don’t have to tell your brain to say no. It is a reflex. What?

You want to get out the Halloween costumes and play dress up in April? No. You want to get out the cookie mix and bake at 8am on Saturday? No. You want to make a giant fort with all the blankets in the house after I just made all the beds? No. I am the first to raise my hand and say,” Yep, I was a “No-er”.

With seven small boys in the house, I think no just seemed safer to me. And I’m not even sure it was a conscious choice. Over time it just became a habit, a reflex. And then there was that one pivotal day when one of them asked for something and I said no. Though I can’t even remember now what his request was, I can still remember the look on his little face. And that day changed everything. I began to intentionally assess my no, and I started practicing the art of listening and giving myself a few lengthy seconds before I respond. Interestingly, what I quickly found out was that so many of my no’s could easily

be yes’s and a yes is a powerful thing in relationship.

So although your no may make that moment in your day easier because you just don’t have to deal with the request, trust me on this – that little 6-year-old is very quickly going to be a 16-year-old. And when we lay a foundation of no, no, no – you are losing much needed currency for later on.

Now that all seven boys are well into the teen and early adulthood years, my no is powerful. They all fully understand that when we sit down to discuss something and my answer is no – it is because there is some well thought out reasoning behind that. And that means something to them. Although we can’t (and shouldn’t) always say yes to our children, my encouragement to you is to practice the art of the pause. Think. Consider and then respond. Don’t let that little no reflex hammer get the better of you.

Her clinical focus is on helping parents and professionals understand the role of the brain in behavior and how to adopt therapeutic parenting techniques to mitigate negative behaviors. 10th Annual Turkey Take-out

The Tenth Annual Turkey Take-Out is gearing up to feed an estimated 1200 people again this year, many of whom are the families of students at Foley Elementary School and the Foley feeder schools such as Magnolia Springs and Swift School, as well as Summerdale, Gulf Shores, and the Rosinton areas.

Turkey Take-Out is a partnership of community churches, organizations, and Foley Elementary School, established to provide needy families with a warm meal on Thanksgiving Day as well as non-perishable food items to fill the pantries of those in need. Last year, Turkey Take-Out fed over 235 families on Thanksgiving Day and collected non-perishable food to deliver to these families as well. The Thanksgiving meal of turkey, dressing, green beans, gravy, cranberry sauce, rolls and pie was prepared, packaged and delivered with the help of more than 300 volunteers over two days.

Turkey Take-Out is calling on everyone to collect non-perishable food items and deliver to the following locations: Foley Elementary School, Foley City Hall/Civic Center, Anchor Point Church, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Foley. Churches or other organizations can also collect the food items to be delivered to Foley Elementary School by Friday, November 22, 2019.

Turkey Take-Out is in need of donations to buy the food for the Thanksgiving meals. A donation of $40 will feed a family of four. Donations can be made directly to Anchor Point Church. Also, volunteers are still needed for the preparation of food, organization of non-perishable foods, packaging and delivery. Little Miss HoneyBee Pageant Raises Food and Funds for Needy Children

Little Miss HoneyBee Pageant was held at PZK on Saturday, October 12. The goal of the pageant is to raise as much food as possible for local schools’ “Food for Backpacks” programs. The group collected nearly 4,000 food items and raised enough for almost 2 Book scholarships! Twenty-two contestants from all over Baldwin County participated, which allowed the organization to fill the PZK with family & friends. This year they added another category, allowing them to crown 2 queens. They are: Little Miss HoneyBee Caroline Taylor; Young Miss HoneyBee - Portia Hollis; Queen’s Court - Adalyn Lyles, Audrey O’Conner, Emma Kate Lynn (Most Photogenic), Jora Corrino, Lucy Delana Stefskal; Miss Congeniality - Augusta Ray Pepperman; Miss Charity - Kinley Reese Hermecz. The Original Oyster House restaurants will serve a free lunch or dinner to veterans and active military on Veteran’s Day, Monday, November 11, from 11 AM-close at the Gulf Shores and Mobile Causeway locations.

Local Mom/Writer Releases First Book

Margie Sims, acclaimed writer, speaker, blogger and local mom of 10, has finally put together a collection of the wit and wisdom that has made her the confidant and friend to so many women. Her book, "Launch: Preparing Your Kids for Takeoff", is a warm, approachable book with a "come alongside and encourage you" kind of style that makes Margie such a sought after mentor to so many women. University of South Alabama's Centers for Healthy Communities is partnering with the All of Us Research Program, which aims to speed up health research and medical breakthroughs, and YOU can help. Led by the National Institutes of Health, All of Us is asking volunteers in our area to share different types of health and lifestyle information, such as where they live, what they do and their family health history.

Camping Safety Tips After a really long summer, it has finally cooled down and it’s time to get outdoors. In the fall, one thing that my family loves to do is camping! Today we will review some great places to camp in our area, as well as some safety tips regarding getting lost, protecting you and your kids from the great outdoors, and review some must haves for the big trip!

One of the first memories my boys have from Scouts was camping at the USS Alabama Battleship. I remember visiting as a kid and having a Homecoming dance on there, but I really couldn’t remember how cool it was.

So, we all went and camped out on the lawn of the Battleship with probably thousands of other Scouts and had a blast. Over one winter we got to actually sleep on the Battleship in the same bunks that the sailors slept on when the ship was an active warship! Everyone knows the Battleship is there when you drive over the bay, but we often forget what a wonderful and important monument it is to our parents, grandparents and country!

In Baldwin County, we also have lots of great places to camp. We have all stayed at the new campgrounds in the Gulf State Park, including my wife, daughter, and some raccoons! Since the hurricanes damaged the grounds a few years ago, they have spent a lot of money rebuilding the area and it looks great! We also have Blakeley State Park in Spanish Fort with great camping and lots

of history. And, of course, if you want, you can just go camping in your backyard! So, you don’t have to go too far to have a great camping experience with your family.

Of course, as with anything in pediatrics and Scouts, you have to be prepared! Before you go, be sure you do the following things.

First, be sure to tell at least two people where you are going to camp and when you should be back. Second, look at the weather! Be prepared for changes in temperature and storms! Third, review a book or pictures online of poisonous plants and snakes in the area. Everyone jokes about getting poison ivy or oak, but if you get it in the wrong place, it’s no laughing matter!

So, what do you need to bring? Of course, you need a first aid kit. Familiarize yourself with the contents and add the following if not already there: Benadryl, hydrocortisone 1% cream, sunscreen, bug spray, and a pain reliever like ibuprofen.

You will need to pack clothes for layering in case it gets too hot or cold, a good map, lots of water and food, waterproof matches and tents, several flashlights and LOTS of batteries! You will be surprised how quickly they run out. Also, it’s a good idea to have a whistle—if you or a child gets lost, a whistle will carry a lot further than the human voice.

So, a few quick safety tips. First, teach your child that if they get lost, stay put! Don’t

wander off the trail and try to find the group.

The group is much more likely to find you if are near the last place you were seen. Also, if lost, blow the whistle! Next, be sure to apply lots of sunscreen and bug spray. At the end of each day, be sure to examine every person in the group for ticks—especially in hard to see areas like the hair. Be careful when crossing any water. The rocks can be very slippery and the logs can be dangerous! And please, don’t drink the water, and assume that you cannot eat any plant or berry. Seriously, I’ve heard it before! Finally, use special care around campfires to prevent any burns or other injuries.

Camping is a wonderful family activity that builds character and family bonding.

Raising Money for Childhood Cancer Research

Fairhope Middle School's Peer Helper Program hosted the annual New Student Breakfast on October 3. New students were treated to a donut breakfast, and then played a get to know each other game, "Did You Know?" Sixth Grade students at Bayshore Christian School recently completed a literature unit on J.R.R. Tolkien's, “The Hobbit�. To celebrate this beautiful story, the class had the opportunity to dramatize several memorable scenes from the book. Students were divided into small groups and given character roles. They diligently worked together writing scenes, practicing lines, and preparing props. As a culminating activity, students dressed in costume and presented the play in front of family members and grammar school students. Afterwards, students were treated to a "Hobbit Feast," thanks to the contributions of our amazing room moms and parent volunteers.

Central Christian School Students Experience Homeless Sleep Out Simulation

The Middle and High School students of Central Christian School participated in a 25-hour Homeless Sleep Out Simulation on campus during October to raise awareness of the Homeless population in Baldwin and Mobile Counties. The students stood in car line as parents dropped and picked their children up from school carrying signs with facts about homelessness which includes over 600 students in Baldwin County alone who attend school every day yet are homeless. They presented programs throughout the day on campus as well as learning how difficult it is to find a meal; sleep outdoors in cardboard boxes (of course the grass was much softer than the asphalt); ending up with bug bites and blankets and clothes wet from the falling dew; to even having a visit from the local police in the middle of the night to have them wake up, gather all their things, and move to a different location just as would happen in real life. We also had a visitor who was homeless as a child share her story about how God totally protected her. It is an experience the students say they will remember for life.

The Baldwin County High School Tiger Band had an outstanding performance at the 36th annual The Heart of Dixie Band Festival Competition in Prattville. The Band, Drum Major, Percussion, Color Guard, and Dance Team all received superior ratings.

The Tigerettes were also named "Best in Class" Dance Team. The Band is under the direction of Drum Major Sarah Haskew. Band Directors are Jeff Lepa and Josh Williams and the Auxiliary sponsors are Elizabeth Byrd and Alex Homan.

Spanish Fort Students Design Stained-Glass Windows

This week in Mrs. Purser’s 7th grade advanced math classes, students worked on a project that required them to pull together many of their problem-solving, mathematical, and creative skills.

First, they worked to estimate the budget needed to construct two different stained-glass windows in a given design. They were then ready to design their own windows—complete with a realistic budget. The final challenge was constructing their creations out of tissue paper and clear laminate paper. The results were fun and beautiful!

St. Michael Sailing Team Qualifies for Upcoming Regatta

The St. Michael Catholic High School sailing team raced the Monk Smith Regatta in Bay St. Louis, MS on October 5.

There were 11 schools attending from Florida to Louisiana.

SMCHS sailors Nate Hartwell and Sullivan Stankoski placed 3rd overall and sealed it with a first place in the last race! This finish qualified St. Michaels for an invitation to the Great Oaks Regatta in November. They will be one of 28 high school teams from across the country. #fearthefeather

Baldwin County Special Needs Bus Specially Designed for Students

For Wyatt, riding a school bus to school has always been his wish. Like most mothers, Wyatt’s mom, Farrah Combs, wanted to make sure it would be okay for Wyatt to ride the bus each day to school as Wyatt is on the spectrum and will ride a special needs bus to school. Anthony Pollard, Transportation Supervisor for Baldwin County Public Schools, arranged for Wyatt to participate in a trial ride on the bus.

This day honored not only Wyatt, but countless others in the Baldwin County Public School system, that ride or have ridden special needs buses. Baldwin County Public Schools includes 46 special needs routes, featuring a para educator on each special needs bus, who are trained above and beyond state requirements. “We work directly with Special Services in planning and preparation. Our staff attends Special Services meetings, provides training to Special Services staff, and works to ensure everyone is aware of changes involving transportation,” said Pollard.

All special needs buses are air-conditioned and contain safety belts, ramps and other items specifically designed for the students. Drivers and para educators go above and beyond by remaining in contact with the parents/ guardians. This provides them peace of mind and makes them aware of any changes that may have taken place before, during or after routes.

Ribbon Cutting Held for New Bay Minette Elementary

What a glorious day for Bay Minette Elementary School! The official ribbon cutting ceremony was held last month at the new school campus.

Principal Laura Moorer, Superintendent Eddie Tyler and Mayor Bob Wills all praised the faculty, community and those who had a hand in the construction of the new school. Among those recognized included Adams Stewart Architects, Bayshore Construction Inc. of Bay Minette and Frank Boatright with Baldwin County Public Schools.

Two of the partners in the architectural firm - Todd Stewart and Jason Shipp - are graduates of Baldwin County High School. Bayshore Construction is run by the Redmon family of Bay Minette and all three sons – Jeffrey, Jason and Jeremy – are graduates of BCHS. Jason and Jeffrey Redmon oversaw the construction of BMES! Frank Boatright, also a BCHS graduate, serves as the facility manager for the Baldwin County Public Schools. He worked closely with both groups to develop the design and construction plan for the new BMES. What a truly homegrown effort!

The new BMES features 104,800-square feet of new construction and 4,800-square feet of gym renovation. The new school includes 49 classrooms, six special needs classrooms, two Pathways classes, a cafetorium, chorus room, band room, media center with collaborative seating, two lane car rider drop-off and pick-up, special needs and Pre-K drop-off; three new parking areas for a total of 234 spaces, security camera and security system and the county's first tornado shelter school space.

This $17.4 million dollar community investment is 100-percent debt-free construction as part of the Baldwin County Public School's "Pay As You Go" capital construction plan with no long-term bonds and no new taxes.

Special thanks is extended to the Baldwin County School Board and all those who worked so hard to make this dream a reality for Bay Minette. Our community came together in a big way in support of the new school. While there is still much work to be done on the campus, our students and community were excited to usher in this new era!

BCHS FFA Students Learn about Agriculture During Field Trip to Fair

Thirty-four students and two teachers, Andy Jones and David Garrett, from the Baldwin County High School FFA chapter attended a field trip to the Baldwin County Fairgrounds in Robertsdale as well as a farm belonging to Wesley Moore in Summerdale.

At the fairgrounds, the students were provided a lunch and given the ability to meet with Sonny Hankins, the Baldwin County Fair manager. The students had the opportunity to talk with Mr. Hankins, allowing them to understand the importance of the fair and what it does for the county and for agriculture. The students also toured the fairgrounds, enjoying the various exhibitions set up around the coliseum. They were able to observe a collection of antique tractors and farm equipment, as well as a wide variety of livestock and poultry. The students also got the chance to look at a display piece prepared by some of their fellow classmates devoted to the chapter and its many different activities.

After departing the fairgrounds, the group traveled to Alligator Alley in Summerdale, owned by Wesley Moore. The students were able to learn about farm equipment and operations, demonstrated by their advisors. This also gave the students who participate in either land, livestock, or forestry judging contests the opportunity for hands-on experience in their respective fields of study.

The livestock judging team was able to gain experience by observing and discussing the different aspects of the contest on live cattle. Mr. Moore also allowed one of the FFA advisors, Andy Jones, to dig a hole in his pasture so that the land judging team could observe and study the different soil levels. The forestry judging team mainly worked on tree identification and orienteering. The students were also able to watch a peanut field being inverted and speak with the farmer about the growing process and harvesting procedure.

"Overall, the trip was a success. This opportunity to escape the classroom and gain real world educational experiences was both enjoyed and appreciated by all those who attended," Mr. Garrett said. Bayside Art Guild Wins Jubilee Festival’s Student Art Competition

Bayside Academy is pleased to congratulate its High School Art Guild who, under the leadership of senior Anna Schmidt and junior Hannah Wieland, won first place in the Jubilee Festival of Arts Student Art Competition hosted by the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce.

Artists were asked to create works of art from trash rescued from Mobile Bay to line up with the spirit of Jubilee and the growing commitment to protect Mobile Bay. Under the guidance of the art department faculty, the Art Guild created a large jellyfish sculpture—mounted on a found driftwood board—comprised of trash that was or could be found in the bay, along with photographic images of threatened marine life. Their winning artwork will be displayed in the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce.

This is the second year for Bayside artists to bring home the top prize. The exhibition is open to all high school students from Spanish Fort High School, Daphne High School, Fairhope High School, St. Michael Catholic High School, Bayshore Christian School, and Bayside Academy. Congratulations to these outstanding art students!

St. Michael Students Embrace Debate and Diplomacy at Cardinal Model UN Conference

On October 5 the Saint Michael Catholic High School Model United Nations (UN) team hosted its first annual Cardinal Model UN Conference, involving over 60 students and marking the arrival of the new Saint Michael Model UN Program. Model UN is an activity through which students simulate a committee of the United Nations, discussing and debating real world topics with the goal of proposing and passing Resolutions, the UN’s equivalent of a bill or treaty that attempts to resolve the issue under discussion. During the Cardinal Model UN Conference, 61 St. Michael students and a St. Patrick eighth grader served as delegates in the Disarmament Committee (DISEC) and addressed the proliferation of nuclear weapons with a focus on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea). The Cardinal Model UN Conference taught the delegates how the real UN works by guiding them through the rigors of speaking under the rules of parliamentary procedure and the process of resolution writing and advocacy. After six hours of debate, the delegates passed two resolutions that called for countries to better support the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), to embrace nuclear power as a safe alternative to fossil fuels, and to condemn and oppose acts of aggression.

“Involving 20 percent of the Saint Michael student body was beyond my wildest expectations for our first conference,” said St. Michael Model UN Advisor Paul Saboe. “It shows that Saint Michael students are keen to embrace a global perspective and to develop life skills including research, public speaking, and critical thinking skills that will serve them in high school, college and beyond.”

The Saint Michael Model UN Team will next compete in their first travel conference at the University of Alabama Model UN Conference (ALMUN) in February 2020. Next October, the Saint Michael team will sponsor the second annual Cardinal Model UN Conference with the students serving as chairs for the first time and with all area high school and middle school students invited to participate.

Fairhope Middle School Peer Helpers Hold Anti-Bullying Assembly

On Thursday, September 27, the Fairhope Middle School Peer Helpers conducted the annual Anti-Bullying Assembly for 7th graders. Bullying prevention video clips were shown and Peer Helpers discussed what students should do if they are bullied. Mrs. Bowling, the 7th grade Counselor, and Mrs. Doyle, the 8th grade Counselor, presented information regarding how to report bullying online and also the Student Harassment and Bullying Complaint forms located in the Counselor’s office.

The Jamari Terrell Williams Student Bullying Prevention Act was also presented that addresses cyber bullying and bullying off campus. The assembly concluded with the students signing Fairhope Middle School’s Anti-Bullying/Harassment Contract, which is taken home for a parent signature. Bayside Academy Volleyball Coach Records 1500th Win

When Bayside Academy defeated Vestavia Hills in the Over the Mountain Tournament at Hoover High School on September 28, Bayside Volleyball Coach Ann Schilling became the first volleyball coach in Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) history to record her 1500th win. Coach Schilling’s lifetime record is 1502–407.

During her 32 years at Bayside, Coach Schilling has brought home 23 state championships, including the ongoing unprecedented streak of 17 straight titles. Her teams have made it to the playoffs every year of her career. Additionally, she led Bayside to becoming the first school in the history of the AHSAA to win titles in 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A. In March 2018, Coach Schilling was inducted into the AHSAA Sports Hall of Fame.

What Parents Need to Know About Social Media and Anxiety

it adds an extra layer to your parenting duties, it’s a good idea to get a good sense of your kid’s online life. Ask kids to give you a tour of their social media world. As they’re showing you around, you might hear some of the positive stuff you weren’t expecting, as well as some of the problem areas your kid could use help with. Also, add social media to the “wellness checks” that you already do. For example, when you ask how they slept and what they ate, ask how they’re feeling about social media. Is it mostly positive, helpful, and supportive, or do they want to step back but aren’t sure how? Here are some more tips for keeping social media a positive for kids:

From cyberbullying to FOMO to cruel comments, social media can be a land mine for kids. Issues we parents never had to worry about, such as an intimate photo texted to the entire school or Instagram videos of a birthday party we weren’t invited to, are now a risk for many tweens and teens. With kids’ digital well-being a concern, researchers are exploring potential links between social media and the rise in teen suicide rates, tech addiction, and loss of real-life social skills. And many parents are wondering: Is social media causing my kid to have anxiety?

It’s an important question -- and one that makes for compelling headlines for worried parents. While it’s too early to say with certainty (this is, after all, the first generation of “digital natives”), the reality is somewhat nuanced. Some research has observed a relationship between social media use and anxiety in kids, but it’s difficult to know if and when social media is causing anxiety or whether kids who are anxious are turning to social media as a way to soothe themselves or seek support. How kids use social media matters, too: Social comparison and feedback-seeking behaviors have been associated with depressive symptoms, which often co-occur with anxiety.

Of course, it’s common for kids to feel anxious sometimes.

But there’s a big difference between occasional anxiety and an anxiety disorder that requires professional care. If your kid is overly self-conscious, has uncontrollable and unrealistic anxiety, is unable to make it go away, and avoids things, you may want to seek help. For these kids, social media may act as a trigger for -- though not the root cause of -- their anxious feelings. There are also kids, who, for a variety of reasons, may be more sensitive to the anxiety-producing effects of social media. For example, kids with social anxiety disorder may prefer online interactions over face-to-face interactions. Bottom line: You may not know the impact of social media on your kid until issues surface.

Unfortunately, simply cutting off social media isn’t necessarily the answer. It’s such a huge part of many kids’ lives that not having access to social media could take a toll. In fact, being connected to friends through social media may counterbalance some of its negative effects.

Without conclusive research to back up claims that social media causes anxiety -- and some evidence to show it’s beneficial -- it’s up to you to keep tabs on how your kid’s doing. Though Eastern Shore Parents I November 2019

Encourage self-care. Seeing photos of a trip to the beach your friends didn’t invite you to can really sting. If your kid is super bummed or tired of digital drama, suggest they take a break from social media for a while. In fact, if they post a status update that they’re taking a break, their friends might be very accepting because they’ve had similar feelings.

Help kids put social media in perspective. People post stuff that makes their lives look perfect -- not the homework struggles, or the fight they had with their dad, or the hours it took to look as good as possible for the camera. Remind kids that social media leaves the messy stuff out -- and that everyone has ups and downs.

Encourage offline activities. In a world where kids could spend their days lying around looking at Instagram, it’s doubly important for them to feel as though they’re cultivating their inner lives. Prompt them to balance social media with soul-nourishing activities such as hobbies, exercise, reading, and helping others.

Otherwise, what are they going to brag about on social media?

Talk about their feelings. Ask them what it feels like to look at other kids’ feeds. Is there a tipping point from when they feel OK to when they start to feel bad about their own lives? Encourage them to stop before that feeling sets in and do something good for themselves instead.

Let them know you’re there for them. You may not understand everything about your kid’s online social life. But recognizing it’s important to them makes your kid feel valued -- and more likely to come to you when they encounter problems.

Get help. If you see any cause for concern, including mood swings that seem to result from social media, not taking pleasure in activities he or she used to enjoy, and having accompanying symptoms such as headaches and stomachaches, visit your kid’s pediatrician for a professional opinion.

Learning how to be grateful is definitely something that we should pass on to our kids. If you can get them into the habit of expressing gratitude from an early age, it is likely to have a positive effect in the long run. Here are some ways to build a gratitude habit in your home.

Gratitude Journals One of the most popular and effective ways to express gratitude stories is through journaling. It encourages our kids to acknowledge the positive moments in their day, no matter how insignificant they may seem. Whether it is a smile from a stranger, a good grade on a test, a gift from a relative, or an awe-inspiring sunset, they will begin to feel calmer and more joyful by appreciating these experiences. Our children can greatly benefit from keeping a gratitude journal, but it’s important that we keep it fun for them such as with multimedia ideas like blogs and videos.

Thanksgiving Dinner Every Night Just because Thanksgiving is in November doesn’t mean we can’t incorporate Thanksgiving traditions year-round as we sit down together at the dinner table. Enjoy your time with your family and encourage your children to tell you all about their day and the things to be grateful for. Ask them to remember to thank siblings and other family members. Some families find it helpful to put together a gratitude jar to collect their thankful statements all year, and then they can go through everything they wrote each year on Thanksgiving.

Bedtime Routine The most important stress buster that I added to my life was introducing a gratitude prayer with my children every night as part of their bedtime routine. We go around the room and each say one thing we are thankful for that day and one thing we hope for in the future. It is such a special time we share together, and has become a key part of our lives. I love this practice because it gives me a chance to think about gratitude every day, even if I don’t always say everything I am thinking out loud for my children to hear. And when you do it with your children, they hold you accountable.

Spontaneous Moments Finally, try finding gratitude moments with your children throughout the day. A great time is during the car ride to and from school or when you are waiting in line at a store or in the doctor’s office. Connect with your children by asking them what happened during their day what they are grateful for. Make gratitude part of your children’s after school routine.

Add some fun and interest by asking your kids to use the alphabet, colors, shapes, or other categories to guide what that are thankful for. For example, ask them to find one thing they are grateful for based on the colors of the rainbow: the delicious red apple they had during lunch, the bright blue sky, and the beautiful purple flower blooming in front of your house. Next, spark their appreciation for nature by taking them to awe-inspiring places like gardens, the beach, parks, and hiking and camping spots. And just when your day seems stressful and out of control, take a gratitude break to calm everyone down and to gain a new, more uplifting perspective. Strategy for Paying Off Debt Q. I’ve heard lots of different theories and

recommendations when it comes to paying off debt. Why do you advise paying off debts from smallest to largest?

A. A lot of people wonder the same thing when I bring up the debt snowball. Some think paying off the debt with highest interest rate first is the best approach.

This may seem to make sense mathematically, but I realized a long time ago debt is not a mathematics problem—it’s a behavior problem. Personal finance is 80 percent behavior, and only 20 percent head knowledge. Besides, if all those people were so great at math, they wouldn’t be up to their eyeballs in debt in the first place!

ing your behavior and providing inspiration to get out of debt is more important than the math. Your probability of becoming wealthy is more closely connected to your behavior than your financial “sophistication” or academic pedigree.

When you pay off a small debt you experience success, and that gives you hope. Then, you move on the next debt.

When you pay that one off, and you’ve wiped out two debts, it really energizes you.

At that point you start to get excited, and you begin to believe in yourself and in the fact you’re actually on the road to becoming debt-free!

It’s Not Easy Money Q. I’m 35, and I’ve always wanted to own

rental property. I think I’ve found a deal that

would work for me. I want to take $20,000 out of my thrift savings account to use as a down payment on the property. I could rent the place for $1,400 a month, and my loan payment would be $1,100 a month. What do you think about this idea?

A. I love real estate, so I understand the allure. But what you’re telling me is you want to cash out part of your retirement, get hit with a penalty and take on debt, to buy an investment property. I wouldn’t do it.

I’ve got a feeling you’ve never been a landlord before. Bringing in $1,400 and paying out $1,100 may seem like a good place to be, but you haven’t figured all the risk into your equation. Rental properties just sit there empty sometimes. Other times you have renters who don’t pay, repairs, and people who just tear up things. In other words, you won’t be able to count on an easy $300 in your pocket every month.

Like I said, I totally get your fascination with real estate. But my advice is to save up, and pay cash for one decent rental property to see if this game is really for you.

Thanksgiving is that time of year when family and friends travel near and far to enjoy special moments with each other while basking in the joy of gratitude, sitting around a beautiful feast at the dinner table. In reality, some families struggle to co-exist while joining together during the holiday season, and sitting around the table with relatives may inspire anything but gratitude. Perhaps, you may have an overly opinionated mother-in-law who gives unsolicited advice on how to raise your children. An aunt who’s a perfectionist and no matter what you do, from placing the table linens precisely to roasting the turkey to perfection — nothing ever seems to be good enough. Or just maybe, you have that one family member who’s habitually negative, which results in conflict and family tension every holiday.

Despite the power struggles, childish behavior, and annoying jabs, avoid allowing ­family members to put a damper on the day. The good news is that there are ways to navigate through frustrating family ties. Here are ways to cope with these unpalatable situations and make the best of your day together as a family.

Pick your battles: At some point during

your life, you’ve been advised to choose your battles carefully. Maybe it was on the playground during a competitive race through the obstacle course, during an 8 a.m. board room meeting with several opposing points of view, or discussing a new car purchase with your significant other who’s not in favor. During a conversation, everyone expresses themselves differently. A person may come across as brash, however, their intentions may not be to insult or upset you. Whenever conflict seems to be brewing, steer the conversation towards a more positive path to defuse the situation. Another technique to try is training yourself to be less sensitive or quick-tempered. Remember, the holiday season is a time to connect and enjoy your family while sharing healthy and delightful conversations.

Be assertive and respectful: Every

family member should be respected and treated like an adult — even if you’re the youngest family member present. If a dispute occurs that you’re not comfortable with, you have the right to stand up for yourself. For example, if your motherin-law, aunt, or whoever is attempting to discipline your child in a manner that you

don’t approve of, stand firm as the parent with your expectations. If you’re intentional and communicate your expectations to your family kindly, it avoids conflict. Taking this approach is an opportunity to alleviate stress and enjoy time with your family.

Choose light-hearted conversations:

As the saying goes, it’s not what you say, but how you say it. It’s important to know that effective communication allows openness to receive what you’re trying to convey. Also, taking an opportunity to choose light-hearted conversation starters helps to break barriers of feeling uncomfortable and displaced.

Avoid choosing open-ended questions that could potentially result in a “yes or no” response. Here are some great conversations starters to consider. What personal passion project are you working on right now? What was the highlight of your week? If you had to pick one, skydiving, bungee jumping, or scuba diving, which would you do?

Adjust your attitude: There are several

advantages to having a positive attitude.

It reduces stress, produces more energy, and creates a positive environment. While keeping those in mind, operating from a

place of negativity causes adverse effects on you mentally and physically. No one jumps at the chance of being around someone with an unpleasant attitude.

Negativity is an unproductive way to build a connection with a family member because it potentially causes division which hinders building a relationship. Instead of dreading and agonizing about spending time with your family, focus on the possibility of mending a relationship.

Agree on a conflict resolution ahead of time:

There is conflict in all relationships, and it’s normal among many families. Making an effort to reconcile differences before joining family and friends during the holidays ensures privacy to settle a dispute without involving other family members.

Otherwise, you could face the situation worsening and unresolved. Though this could seem like a daunting task — it’s a proactive approach that could potentially avoid worsening the situation. If you’re willing to give yourself and your relative an opportunity for a resolution, it will make the day much more enjoyable.

Establish healthy boundaries: How do you establish setting boundaries without increasing an already uncomfortable situation? Setting boundaries are a healthy

way to keep you safe. Although your family may not agree with your decision — it is necessary and healthy for you to set boundaries. Keep in mind that boundaries shouldn’t be so unreasonable that it damages a relationship. They are also about compromise, not an ultimatum. Be open with your family about what you can or can’t tolerate to progress through the day with a clear and agreeable understanding.

Don’t overextend your stay: Traveling during the holiday season can be stressful, especially long-distance travel. And combining it with dread of an extended stay can certainly damper your plans. Putting yourself in a situation to dread a prolonged visit could cause additional anxiety and stress. Taking a different approach to determine a reasonable timeframe to visit will make you more comfortable and lessen the worry of interacting with family.

Although entering into the holidays might lead to frustration of unresolved family issues, take some time to reflect on the art of gratitude. Embrace being thankful for having an opportunity to spend time with your family and create memories. While these recommendations can’t necessarily improve your family, perhaps they can improve your mood and help you get through the holidays with your sanity intact. Working together for a common goal and achieving it helps build a strong bond between teammates. “Team sports help kids identify their place on the team even if they aren’t the star player.

It also teaches compassion and empathy when teammates make mistakes.” says Kara Thomas, a Colorado Springs mother. Kids who are part of a sports team learn to cheer each other on and feel the same support from their teammates during the game.

They will also learn sportsmanship, compassion when someone gets hurt, and how to get along with teammates, even when they don’t like each other. The ability to work as a team is a skill they will use throughout life in school, at work, and even in a family unit.

You can’t always be the winner in team sports. Kids learn to lose, good sportsmanship and how to be empathetic when your teammates make mistakes. Jim Carrier, soccer coach and father of two says, “I wanted them to learn to win graciously, lose without losing, how to work together, support their teammates, a good work ethic, the joy of victory, confidence, and leadership skills. The Addams Family

Gemini Man

MPAA Rating: PG Overall: BViolence: CSexual Content: A Profanity: A Alcohol / Drug Use: A Everyone’s favorite creepy clan is back, this time in an animated feature film, made more horrifying by its 3D option. Fans of macabre mayhem will be pleased to know that the Addams family are still their strange, scary selves: Morticia (voiced by Charlize Theron) uses her late parents’ ashes as cosmetics, Wednesday (voiced deadpan by Chloe Grace Moretz) guillotines her dolls, Pugsley (voiced by Finn Wolfhard) sets off explosives instead of training in swordsmanship.

The plot of this film turns on two points: Pugsley’s fast approaching coming-of-age ceremony - the Addams mazurka - and the desire of Margaux (voiced by Allison Janney) a property developer/reality TV host to sell the homes she has designed and built in the neighboring community. But the Addams’ gloomy mansion stands in her way.

Although there are a few laughs and some action sequences, much of the movie crawls like a cortege on its way to the cemetery. If you’re looking for a movie to make you laugh, don’t expect side-splitting comedy.

Although The Addams Family has frightening moments aplenty, none of them are gory. There are crossbows, guillotines, an electric chair, and explosives but no one is harmed by them. There are also lots of ominous moments involving eerie settings, ghostly sounds, and menacing music. Sensitive children and preschoolers will be upset by the frightening scenes, but most kids will shrug off the scares and laugh.

MPAA Rating: PG-13 Overall: C+ Violence: CSexual Content: AProfanity: CAlcohol / Drug Use: C Henry Brogan (Will Smith) has been an assassin for an American intelligence agency for most of his adult life. The effects on him are adding up – insomnia, nightmares, and guilt – so he decides it’s time to retire. Unfortunately, it’s much harder to get away from his past than it was to get into it. Things only get more complicated when he realizes the shooter the agency has sent after him is...himself. With the help of Danny, who is the agent responsible for tailing him and is played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and his old friend Baron (Benedict Wong), Henry has to confront himself and the system that made him.

The movie was shot at 120 frames per second (industry standard is 24), and then modified for 3D. Sometimes this works fantastically well. But when the camera starts moving quickly, suddenly you’re strapped into your seat for Ultra-3D Vomit Vision. This isn’t a movie for the dizzy or easily nauseated.

The fight choreography is well done, for the most part. Sequences are memorable, easy enough to track, and have interesting adaptations to the settings and situations. The story is admittedly inferior. It’s very predictable, and not much happens that you wouldn’t have called twenty minutes in advance.

That said, I don’t think Gemini Man was going out of its way to blow you away with slick dialogue and clever plotting. The story is an excuse for Will Smith to beat himself up on two different continents, and it delivers.

Gemini Man is well rated at PG-13. The violence is what you’d expect and there are about a dozen moderate profanities and one sexual expletive.

High Strung Free Dance

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

MPAA Rating: PG Overall: BViolence: B+ Sexual Content: B Profanity: B+ Alcohol / Drug Use: AWhen you’re driven to perform, chances are you’re aiming for the bright lights of Broadway. High Strung Free Dance tells the story of three artists chasing fame on the Great White Way. Choreographer Zander (Thomas Doherty) has smoldering good looks, an upper-class British accent, a firm belief in his own genius, and an apparently brilliant dance show he’s bringing to Broadway. And to make the show a smash hit, he needs to get the casting exactly right. Charlie (Harry Jarvis) is a brilliant young pianist desperately looking for work as a musician. Then one night, after getting hit by a car, he sees a lovely young woman, and his luck turns. Barlow (Juliet Doherty) is a beautiful, doe-eyed young dancer who’s making ends meet as a telemarketer while she gets cut from one audition after another. When her roommate disappears, having absconded with three months’ worth of rent, Barlow gets an eviction notice. Desperation makes her bold, and when she’s cut from Zander’s audition, she makes a gutsy attempt to get hired on the show.

Parents considering High Strung Free Dance for their dance-mad tweens and teens can be reassured by the very mild content issues. The biggest issue in this movie is the Barlow-Zander plotline. When Zander offers his employee a ride, when he gives her the lead role and then kisses her, when he has a sexually charged dance with her, he is crossing some critically important lines in a post-#MeToo world. Parents are likely to be disturbed by Zander’s selfish treatment of a vulnerable young woman in his employ.

MPAA Rating: PG Overall: B+ Violence: C Sexual Content: A Profanity: A Alcohol / Drug Use: A In Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Angelina Jolie reprises the role she created in 2014’s Maleficent. But this sequel is a significant departure from the first film.

Maleficent was a surprisingly dark film for a Disney production. The sequel has a more intricate plot but it’s set in a simpler emotional context, which makes it feel more like what you’d expect in a family film.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil opens happily. Aurora (Elle Fanning) is blithely ruling the Moors and has accepted Prince Philip of Ulstead’s (Harris Dickinson) request for her hand. Telling the parents doesn’t go as well as the proposal – Maleficent is incensed and Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer) reluctantly agrees to welcome the foster-daughter of a non-human into her life. When the two families meet for dinner, tempers flare, King John (Robert Lindsay) collapses (apparently cursed), and Aurora must choose between her godmother and mother-in-law-to-be.

Although Aurora and Philip’s engagement sets the narrative in motion, they are almost peripheral figures in this movie, which boils down to the conflict between Maleficent and Queen Ingrith. There’s only one truly evil character, and (hint) it isn’t Maleficent. If you enjoy movies with deliciously wicked villains, you’re going to have a blast with this one.

There are many moments of darkness and peril which render this production unsuitable for preschoolers and young children. Older kids will likely enjoy this film with its fast-moving action and you might even get teens to watch it.
