Publisher’sNote Normally, this time of year, I am counting down to the last day of school, excited about the upcoming summer break. This is year a little different. This year I have a senior. Yes, my first-born is graduating and will be headed off to college soon. That definitely changed the dynamic of the school year.

The last 12 months have been filled with ACTs, college tours, application deadlines, essays for scholarships and all of those things that come with having a senior. Many of those moments, like the motherdaughter road trips visiting colleges, are filled with wonderful memories that I will cherish forever. Other moments, like those previously mentioned, were much more stressful. And I didn’t even have to do any of it. It was stressful just watching her go through it! It has certainly been a roller coaster of a ride for all of us. But I have to say, the look on her beaming face and the excitement in her voice the day she realized where she felt most at home and where she wanted to spend the next four years, made it all worthwhile.

It does not matter if you have a graduating senior or a toddler, parents often go through seasons of stress. We put way too much on our plates, with good intentions of course, but end up a frazzled mess if we are not careful. Christina Katz has some great points for us all to remember in 10 Mompower Mantras: Positive Self-talk For The Whole Family’s Sake.

On top of the stress, I have also been dealing with the flood of emotions that come with letting your baby grow up. Most of the time I am giddy with excitement for her and bursting with pride, because I know she has some wonderful adventures ahead of her.

But the moment I even think about walking past her empty room for the first time after she leaves, my eyes immediately well up with tears. How did it all pass by so quickly?

What will I do at night when I have one less child to kiss good night? It will definitely be an adjustment, but fortunately I have several friends who have walked this path before me to help me along the way. I also have some great advice from Kimberly Blaker in her article, Kids Headed Off to College? How to Survive and Embrace It. Big life changes, like a child leaving for college, can be tough on the whole family.

I am certain my other daughters are going to miss their big sis. Hopefully, Facetime and countless texts between one another with ease the transition. Maybe your family has a child going off to school or maybe a job transfer has the whole family moving.

Whatever the change, Christa Hines has provided us with an article that I think is not only helpful for families relocating, but even for children changing schools or other transitions. You can find her feature, Nine Tips to Make Relocation Easier on Your Kids, on page 52.

May is also the first month of our annual VBS Directory. Each year we compile a list of as many Vacation Bible Schools in the area that we can find and compile them into one, consolidated resource to help you with your summer planning. To view the VBS directory, just flip over to page 56.

As we wrap up the school year, I would like to congratulate the class of 2019 and wish you all the best on your next adventure. To all of the moms, Happy Mother’s Day! Kick back, relax and enjoy. You deserve it! To the parents of seniors, see you in the tissue aisle!

Explosive and Highly Frustrated Kids Few things are as confounding in the parenting sphere as having an explosive child. It’s that gut wrenching (and absolutely infuriating) feeling of watching your precious little one – in the blink of an eye – transform into an angry, unreachable, hurting little human. It’s bewildering to parents everywhere how a simple request of, “Please go bring down your dirty laundry” or “Pass the potatoes” at the dinner table can so quickly and violently morph into a scene from Rocky. Anger, aggression, violence or explosive tendencies can be one of the toughest roads to navigate.

So, what do you do?

Well, a few thoughts. One, in the hard moments be aware of your own self. In our own humanity, it is incredibly easy to rise up and meet their frustration. You are gonna yell at me? Oh, let’s go. It’s on now. If I may point out, little good can come from two angry people.

You simply cannot jump on the angry roller coaster with your child. Someone has to stay behind with two feet on the ground, and operate the controls, less complete chaos ensue.

If your goal is to diffuse a situation, it simply has to start with the parent. Your child, in that moment of rage, has lost all capacity to self-regulate. You have to be the one remaining calm. It’s a bit like the instructions

from every flight attendant – first affix your own life vest or oxygen mask before helping your child. Oddly enough, the same concept applies here. So how do you do that? Well, sometimes it is best to just walk away. Counter-intuitive I know, but hear me on this. In those moments where your child has completely flipped their lid, they simply cannot hear you. They cannot process, or learn, or respond appropriately, much less demonstrate any insight into their behavior. Your presence and words telling them to “calm down” or “knock it off” can often act as gasoline on the fire. So take your gas can, and if your child is safe, walk away. Once your child has calmed down, offer a snack and peaceably sit down together and discuss the issue in a spirit of partnering with your child – all the while modeling regulation and self-control.

Secondarily, I would encourage parents to keep their eye focused on the issue at hand. What was the catalyst for the meltdown? What is the child really mad about?

Remember that kids don’t have words, they have behaviors, so understanding the root cause of the behavior is going to automatically work toward getting that train back on track. Too often we can get trapped in this cycle of punishment for the fit, rather than

finding out the reason for the fit. Your punishment may indeed be effective in the short term, but if your goal is to eventually see an end to the poor behavior, then understanding your child’s stressor and working with them on that is certain to bring about true, authentic, sustainable change. This goes together with my next suggestion.

Third, look for patterns. Are you experiencing the same meltdown at the same time of day? Are you watching their volcano erupt over the same issue time and time again? If so, take a minute and partner with your child to problem solve together. If there is any parenting strategy that works well for any age, it is making your child feel heard, giving them voice.

Now I am the first one to admit all of that sounds easy enough, but is much harder to do. True. I admit it. But it’s like that old saying – “If you keep doing what you’re doing, you’re gonna keep getting what you’re getting”. Let’s do something different.

Fill the Plate for the Hungry

HUNGER is invisible in our Baldwin County communities but not at Prodisee Pantry. Prodisee Pantry is asking for your help to FILL THE PLATE of our neighbors in need!

During the Month of MAY, Red plates will be popping up all across the county at banks, churches, businesses, small groups, civic clubs, etc. Each plate has a value of about $100. One nickel, one dollar, ten dollars or one hundred dollars at a time, the community will FILL THE PLATE of our neighbors in need.

The hungry include the elderly woman sitting next to you at church, the single mom with two kids at the grocery store buying milk, your neighbor, or a co-worker. Many of the 137,542 families that have walked through our doors are struggling financially due to job loss or low wages, medical expenses, natural disasters and other crises. Prodisee Pantry is celebrating 15 years of filling the plate of those who are hungry.

It costs just $20 to provide a family with $100 worth of groceries. But, Prodisee Pantry is more than just a box of groceries to these families. Each family receives fresh produce, meats, bread, staple grocery items and onsite access to dozens of other supportive programs. Our caring volunteers can plug a family into onsite representatives for free legal services, SNAP (food stamps), counseling, employers, budget help, medical assistance, GED classes and so much more. We love hearing families say “I came for food but left with… a job… a voucher for school uniforms for my kids… housing help and more!

The annual Taste of the Towns event is scheduled for Thursday evening, May 9th, at the Five Rivers Delta Resource Center located on the east end of the Causeway. Hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Daphne-Spanish Fort, this year’s event is excited to offer a fun-filled evening benefitting the children of our area. Over 20 restaurants will be participating with taste venues galore, live music by Robert Sully and silent auction items. The Kiwanis Club of Daphne-Spanish Fort consists of approximately 37 volunteers from the community devoted to helping children locally as well as globally. This club sponsors and mentors four area Key Clubs, an Aktion Club (membership is comprised of the Exceptional Foundation participants) and a Terrific Kids Club at Daphne Elementary School. The Kiwanis Club of Daphne-Spanish Fort meets every week on Wednesdays at noon at the Lake Forest Yacht Club. The food and fellowship are always great so come on out and join us.

Publix Grandman Triathlon, Health and Fitness Expo, and Jubilee Kids Triathlon Weekend

The 15th Annual Publix Grandman Triathlon will be held this year on Saturday, June 1 at the Fairhope Municipal Pier. There will also be a Jubilee Kids Triathlon on Sunday, June 2. The Publix Grandman Triathlon begins with racers jumping off of Fairhope Pier and swimming 1/3-mile in Mobile Bay to the shore. Racers exit the water, run up a ladder, and head to the transition area. Following the swim, racers bike 18.6 miles through the charming city of Fairhope, beginning up a steep hill before riding through miles of rolling countryside and along Mobile Bay. After the bike, racers complete a 3.1-mile run through the streets of downtown Fairhope before finishing alongside Mobile Bay. Racers cross the finish line at Fairhope Park.

On Friday, May 31, Mobile Baykeeper starts race weekend with the Lyon Fry Cadden Insurance Agency, Inc. Health & Fitness Expo. It will be at the Fairhope Municipal Pier from 4-7 PM, featuring live music, yoga, fitness tests, health exhibits, and more. During this time, vendors will be on site selling merchandise, racers will pick up their packets, and there will be a first-timer training from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. The Jubilee Kids Triathlon starts on Sunday, June 2 at 7:30 AM. at the Fairhope Pier. With numerous shops, restaurants, and kid-friendly activities, Fairhope is the perfect race destination for the whole family to enjoy. Parents can race in the Grandman Triathlon at the same site the day before and then watch their kids race the next morning on Sunday.

The Jubilee Kids Triathlon is open to children ages 7-15. Participants will compete in categories according to their age division. Ages 11-15 swim 200 yards, bike 3 miles, and run 1.75 miles. Ages 7 to 10 swim 75 yards, bike 1 mile, and run 0.75 miles.

Proceeds from the Publix Grandman Triathlon benefit two local non-profit organizations: Mobile Baykeeper and myTeam Triumph: Southern Alabama. Fairhope Rotary Steak Cook-off

Since 2005, The Fairhope Rotary Steak Cook-off has brought to Fairhope a unique combination of searing Western BBQ-style steaks, Mardi Gras Carnival atmosphere and a chance to “see and be seen” at one of the most fun annual events hosted on the Eastern Shore. A whole year’s worth of planning comes together each May when teams of both professional chefs and local luminaries test their epicurean grilling skills on prime rib eye steaks. The event kicks off on Friday evening when the gracious merchants along South Bancroft Street shutter their stores and relinquish the street to every manner of woodand charcoal-fired grills, from custom BBQ trailers to Texas Smokers. Rules specify that only authentic wood grilling can be used, and as the coals are beginning to get just right, the festival attendees come through the gates and the band starts to play. It is like being invited to the most prestigious tailgate event and then getting to sample everyone’s steaks, mingle with friends and dance the night away without having to worry that you are missing the game. This year's event will be held Friday, May 10, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50 in advance and may be purchased from any club member, online, or at any of the following businesses: Piggly Wiggly in Fairhope, ServisFirst Bank on Fairhope Ave., The First Bank in Fairhope and Daphne, Bryant Bank in Daphne and Foley, The Citizens Bank (TCB) on Section St. in Fairhope, or Lyons Share in Fairhope. 12th Annual Fundraiser Featuring the Head Football Coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide With the year 2007 marking its “first,” Mobile-based Team Focus is pleased to celebrate twelve years of hosting its annual fundraiser event, “A Night with Nick Saban” on WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, at the Renaissance Riverview Plaza Hotel. The South Baldwin Chamber Foundation Honors Junior Ambassadors

Congratulations to the South Baldwin Chamber Foundation's Junior Ambassadors of 2018-2019. Each Junior Ambassador (JA) had the opportunity to speak about their experiences during the year and what they most appreciated about the program. The twenty-eight honorees, who are students at Foley High School, were recognized and presented with a certificate at the 21st Annual Junior Ambassadors' Closing Ceremony on April 8th, at the Foley Civic Center.

The South Baldwin Chamber Foundation's Junior Ambassadors is a youth leadership program tailored to assist high school juniors in identifying personal leadership potential through exposure to economic development opportunities, government awareness, environmental stewardship and civic engagement through community service.

Junior Ambassadors connect with local business leaders, explore dynamic companies, practice real-life problem solving, and learn the value of community involvement. Since 1998, more than 300 students have completed the program.

Burn injuries not only cause immediate pain, but can lead to prolonged periods of rehabilitation, multiple surgeries including skin grafts, months of physical therapy and can lead to a lifetime of physical and mental trauma. Did you know that every year, nearly 4,000 deaths occur in the U.S. from fire and burn injuries!

4,000! Each year, over a half million people are treated in the ER for burns and 25,000 get admitted to burn centers! Injury is the leading cause of death for children in the U.S., and fires and burns contribute significantly.

So, what are the different types of burns? Well, they are grouped into three major categories. First-degree burns damage only the outer layer of skin, while seconddegree burns damage the outer layer and the layer underneath. Finally, third-degree burns damage or destroy the deepest layer of skin and tissues underneath. All burns can cause swelling, blistering, scarring and, in serious cases, shock and even death. They also can lead to infections because they damage your skin’s protective barrier from bacteria. Today we will address some of the major causes, and of course, some prevention strategies.

So what can you do? Lots of things! Be sure to put outlet covers on any electrical outlets that are within a child’s reach and

throw out electrical cords that are frayed or damaged. If you use a space heater, then be sure there are no flammable objects near the heater itself, and be sure it’s turned off if you leave the house. Teach children to never go near a space heater or even to try on turn one on/off. Make sure you store matches and lighters in a locked cabinet or where children can’t reach them and never leave candles unattended.

Smoking is a leading cause of illness in addition to fires, burn injuries, and death, so if you can, for your health and your child’s, stop smoking! If you cannot, then be sure to not smoke in bed and get rid of used cigarettes carefully.

Before putting a child, especially infants and toddlers into a car seat, touch the seat to see how hot it is. Hot seat-belt straps or buckles can cause second-degree burns on small children, so cover the car seat with a towel when you park in the sun.

Don’t let children play near the stove !

Do not use a microwave oven to warm baby bottles. The liquid may heat up unevenly and scald your baby’s mouth!

Be sure to unplug hot irons, such as clothes irons or curling irons, and keep them up on a counter out of a child’s reach.

Monitor kids near any open flames and never leave them alone near fires, in the bathtub, or near a hot stove.

And, what about hot water burns? First, be sure to set the temperature on your water heater to 120º F, or use the “low-medium” setting. This is most likely done if you live in a new home, but can be checked by looking at the dial on the heater itself. If it’s set high, then please consult a professional or someone with experience before you try and change it yourself and get shocked! Any water that is set hotter than this can cause burns in 2 to 3 seconds! Test the water temperature yourself before your children get into the tub or shower and don’t let young children touch the faucet handles during a bath.

Make sure you turn the handles of pots and pans toward the side of the stove, or even better, use the back burners of the stove.

Finally, smoke detectors have been shown to reduce the incidence of death and injuries from fires significantly! Be sure to test your fire alarms twice a year and be sure that all sheets and curtains are made of flame retardant materials. Lastly, have a family plan in case there is a fire in your house so that everyone can get out and meet in the same place!

Use common sense and you can prevent a lot of injuries.

FHS Sailing Team Places 2nd in Wet & Cool Regatta

Foley Elementary School Second Graders are exploring outer space and far away planets, ocean animals deep below the ocean surface, and lands all across our planet with our new virtual reality headsets.

The FHS Sailing Team participated in the Wet & Cool regatta at FYC March 30 & 31. After 20 races, the Pirates came in Second Place over all in the Fleet Racing. Way to go Pirates! Gulf Shores 4th Grader Raises Funds for Autism Awareness

Alpha Delta Kappa Presents Scholarship to Fairhope Media Specialist

Alpha Delta Kappa (ADK) is an international honorary organization of women educators dedicated to educational excellence, altruism and world understanding. The Alabama Chi Chapter of ADK, located in Baldwin County, sponsors the Adopt-A-Teacher project each academic school year. The purpose of this program is to provide one Baldwin County teacher with financial assistance toward items that will enhance their educational program. This year’s recipient is media specialist, Gloria Lucas, at Fairhope Intermediate School which is run under the Principalship of Carol Broughton.

Gloria Lucas has been awarded $220 from the Alpha Delta Kappa, Chi Chapter. These funds will be used toward the purchase of materials for the 2020-2021 school year, when primary students enroll at FIS. Currently, Fairhope Intermediate School houses grades 4-6.

Soon they will welcome kindergarten through 3rd grades, and primary books and supplies will need to be purchased in order to meet the needs of these new students.

Christ the King 6th Graders Visit Dauphin Island Sea Lab

Mrs. Williams's 6th grade Earth Science class visited the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Estuarium. Students learned about the different disciplines of Oceanography from the Sea Lab instructors, learned about the History of Dauphin Island, then went into the field to measure wave height and frequency. Students also were led through the Estuarium to see many of the area's living organisms.

Bayshore Christian School Student Rebuilds Playground

Bayshore Christian School’s playground got a recent makeover. BCS 11th grader, Max Jones, gave the Grammar School students a very large gift this year-he tore down the old playground fort and rebuilt a new beautiful one! The playground project began in July 2018 and lasted through January 2019. Over four months were dedicated to planning and fundraising and, later, 3 months were dedicated to construction and improvements. The project served as the servant leadership project for the Trail Life Freedom Award (equivalent to the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout achievement). More than 20 volunteers from Trail Life Troop AL-139, BCS, and local churches served to make this project possible. Max says he hopes the new playground serves the BCS students well and lasts for many years to come.

Bayside Student/Coaches Honored at Heart Gala Bayside Academy coaches Mark Lasseter and Phil Lazenby were honored as Heart Heroes at the 2019 Art for Heart Gala benefiting the American Heart Association. Coach Lazenby administered lifesaving CPR to Coach Lasseter when he collapsed at school from a heart attack in 2017. Bayside fourth grader Brantley Turner received a Lifesaver Award from the American Heart Association for his role in alerting teachers when he and another student found Coach Lasseter that day.

2019 Baldwin Teachers of the Year

Superintendent Eddie Tyler is “Baldwin Proud” to announce the 2019 elementary and secondary Teachers of the Year. Please join us in congratulating Elementary Teacher of the Year Jennifer Susan Cardwell and Secondary Teacher of the Year Kathy Hughes.

Jennifer Susan Cardwell is a second and sixth grade teacher at Orange Beach Elementary.

She has taught elementary education for 18 years with experience in second, third, fifth and sixth grades. She has been recognized as the Orange Beach Elementary Teacher of the Year 2018-2019, Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers 2003 and a Disney American Teacher Nominee in 2002. Ms. Cardwell did not always know she wanted to be a teacher, but once she began, she quickly realized that she would gladly live the rest of her life in the classroom. She believes teachers hold a powerful responsibility of educating the future citizens of our country, who will shape the world to come. She considers teaching a passion and a privilege.

Kathy Hughes is the choral director and Music 101 instructor at Spanish Fort High School.

She has taught music from kindergarten to twelfth grade and has been the chorus teacher at Spanish Fort since 2005. Today her program has five choirs with more than one hundred students from all walks of school life. She has been involved in the Alabama Vocal Association since 1986, serving in a variety of positions including President. Ms. Hughes says her message is simple: it is all about students. She says her students are what matters in the midst of everything else. She says we owe it to them and ourselves to improve the student-teacher experience. Her love of her students is what Ms. Hughes is most known for as well as her dedication to her school.

The 2019 Teacher of the Year Banquet was held March 26 at the Grand Hotel in Point Clear.

It is sponsored by the Baldwin County Education Coalition. Each school’s Teacher of the Year recipient was recognized.

Great Day of Service at Bayside Academy

Bayside Academy’s annual Great Day of Service was held on Wednesday, April 10. Students from every grade level served our community. Thank you notes were sent to first responders, trees were planted and invasive species cleared from the Pitcher Plant Bog at Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, and residents of assisted living facilities were visited by Bayside students just to name a few of the projects. The Great Day of Service is a way for Bayside students to give back to the community and to understand what it means to serve others.

Bayshore Christian Wins 2nd Place at Art Competition

The Bayshore Christian School Art Department recently participated in the Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival High School Art Competition. Lead by art teacher Carson Burton Baker, students Eden Wilkinson, Abbie Haygood, Andy Mund, and Lily Sheckells took on this year’s theme of Mardi Gras and created a beautiful painting. Bay Minette City Council Honors BCHS Wrestler

The Bay Minette City Council honored Baldwin County High School’s Braiden Williams during its recent meeting. Braiden made school history this season, becoming the first student to earn a state runnerup title in the field of wrestling.

In addition to city recognition, school officials surprised Braiden with a letterman jacket and a commemorative banner highlighting his accomplishments. Braiden had an outstanding senior season for the Tigers. In the 195 pound class, Braiden was the Gulf Coast Clash Champion, Gator Duals Champion, Dolphin Duals Champion, Warrior Invitational Champion and Super Sectionals Champion. In addition, this season, he is a three time Best Wrestler Winner.

Braiden advanced to the championship round of the state competition and finished as the 6A State Runner-Up for the 195 pound classification.

Baldwin County High School fielded its first wrestling team in 2015 and has continuously had athletes advance to the state competition. This marked the first year to have someone make it to the state championship match.

J. Larry Newton Science Fair Winners

Fifth Graders, Waverly Fulford and Josie McKenzie, were the overall first place winners for J. Larry Newton’s 2nd annual Science Fair!

Josie and Waverly’s project “How Fast Is Fast Food?” compared the decomposition rate of food from three different fast food restaurants.

The food was a little yucky to look at after a few weeks, but the students learned some very interesting information!

International Day at Bayshore Christian School

Bayshore Christian School Kindergartners recently celebrated International Day following a study of various countries around the world. Each student selected a country to represent. They brought food that can be found in that country and dressed up as the locals dress in that country. Each student gave a presentation sharing their knowledge on facts they had learned about their respective countries. Families and friends attended the celebration and enjoyed watching these students show off their hard work.

Fifty 7th and 8th grade students were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society this spring.

Membership in this chapter is an honor bestowed upon deserving students by the faculty and is based on the criteria of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship.

This year, Fairhope Middle School hosted its’ 11th annual Miss Pirate Princess Pageant. Participants were scored on interview, beauty walk, and top ten questions. There were 35 girls in the pageant this year, and they were all fabulous. The judges had a very tough job! ROTC of Daphne and Spanish Fort HS Earns Highest Rating

The Air Force JROTC instructors and cadets of Daphne and Spanish Fort High Schools earned an overall unit assessment score of “Exceeds Standards”… the highest rating attainable…during their unit evaluation on March 20. Lt. Col Douglas Goodlin and TSgt David Mendoza created a dynamic and supportive learning environment coupled with an excellent community outreach program. The instructors provided outstanding leadership in administering the cadet centered citizenship program. The Daphne and Spanish Fort High School cadets performed exceptionally well and took great pride in leading and accomplishing their unit goals.

SFMS Holds Student-Led Parent Conferences

Spanish Fort Middle School recently held their Spring Student-Led Parent Conferences.

Students have worked all year creating a digital portfolio website. Student websites contain work samples they are proud of from all their classes as well as their state testing data with reflections and goals. The PTA provided refreshments and students walked their families through their website, showing off their accomplishments and growth. Parents loved that it was student-led and enjoyed the opportunity to spend focused time with their student stating they “loved seeing the school through my child’s eyes” and “we talk all the time but this was more purposeful.” Pictured, Madelyn Smith with her parents

FIS Science Lab Classes Make Solar Ovens and S’mores

Rain or shine, day or night, nothing will stop the FIS FEEF Science Lab classes from enjoying their s’mores! After days of State testing, FIS 4th grade students took a break and FINALLY used their solar ovens to make s’mores.

The solar ovens were created back in November, as part of our Energy unit. Students worked with partners to create a solar oven from paper plates, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, black paper and black paint. Six FIS classes were able to use the ovens outside to make s’mores and enjoy the sunshine, but by Thursday rain arrived.

Being good engineers, the remaining classes considered alternative forms of light energy and how it could be used in place of the sun. They tested and found out that a 150-watt lightbulb also works well with a solar oven. Success!

BCHS Students Build Raised Garden Beds, Picnic Tables

The Baldwin County High School FFA students built 15 raised garden beds and five picnic tables for placement at Light of the City in Douglasville. This project is part of a grant awarded to Light of the City by Impact 100 Baldwin County. The $91,000 will provide for a new gym floor, walking track, pavilion and community garden at the Douglasville School of Arts & Recreation.

Local matching funds and in-kind work is also being provided by the City and NBU. That work is in progress and the project is expected to be completed in late May. The FFA students will also participate in a work day on the Douglasville campus later this month to help with the installation of the raised gardens. #workingtogetherworks

Baldwin County Students Named Winners in Talent Showcase

Two Baldwin County students were declared winners in the DYW Gulf Coast SPOTLIGHT Talent Showcase held at Murphy High School Auditorium. Reagan Chin won the Kids Division (grades 4-6) by performing a lyrical dance to “When You Wish Upon a Star.” Reagan is a 6th grader at Christ the King School. Pianist Don Chen was the winner in the Mini Division (grades 1-3). He performed Solfeggietto by C.P.E. Bach.

He attends Daphne Elementary and is in the 1st grade. Each student received a cash prize of $500 which will be directed to an arts organization at their school. They also will be featured performers on June 26 at the Community Night of the National DYW program in Mobile.

Other Baldwin County students who were named Finalists in the Showcase were all pianists. Huan Chen (Mini Division), Katie Smith (Kids Division), Albert Le (Junior Division, grades 7-9) and Abrielle Le (Senior Division, grades 10-12). Other piano students who participated were Lydia Van Cleave, Evan Ren and Olivia Lee.

North Baldwin Beauty Review Crowns Four New Queens

North Baldwin crowned four new queens at the 8th annual Beauty Review, held April 6 at the L.D. Owen Performing Arts Center in Bay Minette.

The winners include Karsyn Barnett, Little Miss; Cale Jones, Junior Miss; Mallory Hastings, Miss Teen; and Jordyn Shackelford, Miss North Baldwin. In addition to receiving prizes, each winner represents the program by participating in community events and parades throughout the year.

The pageant, sponsored by the Baldwin County High School Tigerettes, is divided into four age categories. The divisions include Little Miss (second to fourth grades); Junior Miss (fifth and sixth grades), Teen (seventh and eighth grades) and Miss (ninth through twelfth grades).

In the Little Miss Division, the runners-ups included Addison Hadley, first runner-up; Meadow Stidham, second runner-up; Payton Brown, third runner-up; Madison Bailey, fourth runner-up. In the Junior Miss Division, the runners-ups included Kaya Brown, first runner-up; Blakley Rider, second runner-up; Carley New, third runner-up; and Abbi Paul, fourth runner-up. In the Teen division, the runners-up included Kadence Kolbe, first runner-up; Audrey Garrett, second runner-up; Emily Byrd, third runner-up; and Olivia Mims, fourth runner-up. BCHS Track & Field Wins Big at County Championship

The Track & Field team from Baldwin County High School earned 10 spots on the podium at the Baldwin County Championship, held in Gulf Shores. Four of those were top spots including the 4x100 relay, 100-meter dash, javelin and shotput throw.

Winning first place in the relay included team members Javis Atchison, La’trell Hollaway, Taiquan Williams and Tiquelin Mims. Javis also picked up a first-place finish in the 100-meter dash and came in second for the 200-meter dash. La’trell finished in second for the 100-meter dash. Albany Casey won the javelin throw and Jarrod Fisher was the first-place finisher in shotput. The girls’ relay team came in second for the 4x100 relay race. Team members included Courtney Coleman, Canithia Bodiford, Kaelieigh Boykin and Niya Boykin. Niya also finished in third place for the 100-meter dash and Alondra Rangel came in second for both the 1600- and 3200-meter dash races.

Coach Graylin Hodge said his team has come a long way. Just four years ago, the team had 20 students competing and now has swelled to 45 athletes. “I am super proud of our kids and the way they represented the City of Bay Minette yesterday,” Hodge said. “Track & Field is really starting to mean something to the kids here and it shows when we show up and compete with the best our county has to offer.” BCHS will now advance to the Sectional meet April 26-27 for the chance to compete at the state level on May 2-4.

Learning Fly Fishing Tips at J. Larry Newton School

OBES Service Project for Animal Shelter Orange Beach Elementary National Elementary Honor Society did a great job on their recent service project for the Baldwin County Animal Shelter.

Kae Price spearheaded this project to collect needed items for animals at the shelter. Thank you to our students school-wide and other donors for their hard work and generosity.

How Colleges Use Kids’ Social Media Feeds

use on your other public social media, there’s a record of your rants and hostile posts, and it could come up when the school Googles you. You can’t go back in time and revise what you wrote. So make sure that the primary account you want the college to see is clean. And if you feel like sounding off in a public forum, make your posts constructive and cordial.

Hey, parents of college-bound kids: Share this with your son or daughter as soon as possible.

Will the weird stuff I like on other people’s social media reflect negatively on me?

Probably not -- unless it’s illegal, extremely antisocial, or disturbing and it makes up the bulk of your feed.

What’s the easiest thing you can do to impress prospective schools? It’s not your GPA. It’s not the debate team. It’s your Instagram – and your Twitter, Snapchat, YouTube, and any other social media feeds that colleges can see. And yes, they’re looking. Get answers to the most important questions about what colleges want to see.

Could the school look poorly on me if I follow provocative figures on social media?

It’s unlikely that they would use this against you unless the majority of people you follow are very extreme and highly controversial. That could show that you’re not open to different points of view, which could be problematic in college. If you’re interested in a topic, seek out a range of opinions.

Also, follow people who are influential in the area you’re interested in -- including the colleges you’re applying to. It will help you learn about the field -- and hey, if the school notices, it shows you’re serious.

Should I delete my social media or make it all private?

Making it private is a good idea anyway.

On most social media, a private account means your name won’t come up in search results, and it limits your digital footprint (how much stuff about you is available on the web). You don’t have to delete your accounts, though. Colleges expect prospective students to have social media. But if you’re applying to schools, it won’t hurt to groom your privacy settings on all your social media to make sure you’re not overexposing yourself. Some social media allows other people to tag you even if you’re not friends (such as through the facial recognition feature on Facebook). You wouldn’t want someone else’s post to negatively impact a college’s perception of you.

What should I do if I think a school unfairly disqualified me because of my social media?

Because colleges receive so many qualified applications, they’re typically looking at social media to see if it tips the scales in anyone’s favor -- not to dig up dirt. Maybe another applicants’ social media just made that person seem like a better match for the school. But if you think a skeleton in your Facebook closet came back to haunt you, you can contact admissions and find out.

Do I have to delete every single party pic of me and my friends?

No. Actually, colleges like to see that you’re a well-rounded person with a healthy social life. The main thing that could hurt you is posts that reflect poor judgment. When Harvard College got wind of offensive material being posted to a group chat by incoming freshmen, it rescinded acceptance letters to 10 students. That’s one reason not to post that kind of stuff. Get rid of any photos and videos that contain inappropriate behavior such as drinking, sexy stuff, and lots of swearing -- and no hostile speech, rudeness, or negative tweets about a school that you’re applying to.

Do my likes, followers, and other indicators of social media popularity help me or hurt me in the college admissions process?

If you’ve actively pursued a specific passion -- say, music, photography, or even the evolution of the shoe from ancient times to present -- and you’ve cultivated an active, engaged audience on social media, that’s a plus. College admissions will see that you have drive and initiative. On the other hand, having a big audience for more typical random teen interests, such as internet memes and cat videos, may not even register (and won’t be held against you).

I once got in a public war of words with someone not on my social media but on another online forum. Will that hurt me?

As you prepare to see your adolescent off to college, you flashback to all your child’s milestones, special moments, and fun times you’ve shared together. It feels like only yesterday your toddler said their first word.

Soon after, you dropped your child off for their first day of kindergarten, prepared your preteen for puberty, and took your teen shopping for the high school prom.

But now, in what feels like an instant, your young adult is headed out into the world, more or less on their own.

This is a turning point at which you no longer have much oversight or say in your child’s life. This can be both scary and exhilarating for parents and kids alike. You’ll worry about your adolescent’s safety and well-being. But you’ll also revel in your child’s enthusiasm, excitement, and dreams for the future.

Parents’ feelings about their own life without their child’s daily presence and parenting responsibilities are often met with a mix of emotions as well. Many parents look forward to this point in their lives and a freedom they haven’t enjoyed in nearly two decades. Some parents may even feel conflicted or guilty for looking forward to ‘me’ time.

At the same time, many parents (even those same parents) feel a sense of loss. After all, they’ve devoted 18 years to caregiving and raising their child. Many parents lose their sense of self while raising a family. In fact, being a parent can become one’s identity. As a result, parents may feel an even greater loss when their kid heads away to college.

SURVIVAL TIPS

So how do you survive this transition? Learn to embrace it.

A heart-to-heart. Write a letter or talk to your adolescent when you see him or her off to college. A letter is best because your kid can save it and read it again to absorb and ponder what you have to say. You’ve already taught your child the importance of manners and doing their schoolwork. So skip that stuff. Instead, offer wisdom about life and your appreciation for your adolescent’s wonderful characteristics. Also, avoid dumping on your child. It’s okay to say you’re going to miss your kid. But don’t overdo it and leave your child feeling guilty or responsible for your pain or loss.

Connection and space. Decide how to keep the connection with your adolescent. Phone calls, texting, email, video chat, and getting together in person offer ample opportunities to maintain your relationship. But don’t overdo it. Your young adult needs time and space to experience their newfound independence and blossom.

Explore. You now have a lot more free time. Don’t let that down time become an avenue to needlessly worry or mope. Instead, be proactive, and set out on a mission of self-discovery. Have you thought about going back to school, work, or changing your career? Now’s a good time to explore your options. How about a new hobby, volunteer work, or focusing on your fitness and health? You can also broaden your horizons. Try out different music genres, visit art and history museums, go to plays and sporting events, or explore cultural restaurants or cooking.

Travel. Plan something exciting. Consider a trip to someplace

you’ve always dreamed of going. Or perhaps plan a long road trip or multiple weekend road trips throughout the year. Whatever you choose will help busy your time with the planning, give you something to look forward to, and remind you of the upside of an empty nest or one less child to raise.

It gets easier. Remember, whatever grief, loneliness, worries, or self-doubts you experience, they’re a normal part of this transition.

With each week and month that passes, it’ll get easier – until one day, you wake up and discover you’ve fully embraced your new life – and feel true joy for your child’s newfound independence. Be Intentional with Your Time Q. As a business owner, how do you find a life balance between work and home? I have my own small business, and sometimes I feel like I’m putting in too much time at the shop and not spending enough time with my husband and kids.

A. The idea of everything being in balance, on an everyday basis, is a myth.

It’s simply not possible to perfectly juggle every aspect of our lives every single day.

The key, I think, is to strive for an overall balance over time. You know first-hand the long hours and how work can interfere with other things if you’re not careful. The

answer lies in really being into whatever you’re doing.

When you’re not at your shop or taking care of work-related matters, actively participate in conversations with your spouse and kids—and listen. Spend time with them! Turn off your cell phone when you go on dates with your husband and when you take your kids on outings.

When you’re with your family you should really be with them. Then, when you have to work, chances are they won’t be so upset, and you’ll feel better about things, too!

Don’t Go Too Far Q. Our son is 17, and he is in school. He has a good part-time job, and my wife and I started teaching him basic money management at a young age. He understands

the importance of saving, giving, and spending, plus he is setting aside money for technical school after he graduates from high school. Do you think it would be an appropriate real-world exercise if we started charging him a very small amount in rent each month to prepare him for life when he leaves home?

A. I appreciate the fact that you’re looking for teachable moments, but I really think charging a teenager rent while he’s living at home is going too far. Now, if he was 28 or 29, that’d be a different story. But as parents, it’s still your responsibility to provide a home for your 17-year-old child.

It sounds like you’ve done a fantastic job already of helping your son grow into a responsible young man. He knows how to work, and he has grasped the basic concepts of managing money. With this kind of start, I’ve got a feeling your kid will be fine. I also think he has a great chance of becoming wealthy some day!

Moving a family is stressful and if the relocation comes with another emotional event like a death in the family, divorce or job loss, the transition hardly feels like a party. While it probably won’t be immediately obvious, with careful planning and generous discussion, your child can benefit from a move.

According to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), “With the proper attention from parents and professional help if necessary, moving can be a positive growth experience for children, leading to increased self confidence and interpersonal skills.”

Tip #1: Discuss the move as soon as possible.

Stay positive, explaining why relocation is necessary. Discuss the perks of your new home’s location. Help your child learn about the area with resources like maps, photographs and the daily newspaper.

Tip #2: Say your good-byes.

A week or two before you move, throw a farewell party to give you and your family an opportunity to officially bid friends and neighbors adieu, exchange contact information and take pictures. Keep refreshments simple, like delivery pizza or sandwiches and refreshments.

Peer groups are especially important the older your child. Host a slumber party for your child to say good-bye to close friends. Provide a keepsake pillow case for your child’s friends to doodle and autograph with fabric markers.

Create a memory book for your kids or provide them with a few craft supplies to make their own. They could include pictures of their friends and memorable outings. Ask their friends, teachers, coaches, and other people they’ll miss to sign it.

Tip #3: Revisit favorite haunts.

Whether a park, zoo or local eatery, take time to honor the places your family enjoyed most. Together make a list of your family’s favorite hot spots you each want to visit before departure day. Make a video journal or a photo book documenting the outings.

Tip #4: Coordinate moving day.

Ask the movers to load your children’s rooms last so their things come off the truck first at your new home. Consider hiring a sitter or enlisting a family friend to watch your kids while working with the movers. Unpack your children’s rooms first which can help ease initial anxieties by surrounding them with their personal and familiar belongings.

Tip #5: Celebrate a new chapter.

On the first night in your new house, organize a “Family Fun Night” with pizza and games to celebrate a new beginning together.Invite your child to help make choices about his new room’s decor. Return to the comfort of old routines like regular meal times and naps as soon as possible.

Tip #6: Use technology... with boundaries.

Help your child use technology like Skype or Facebook’s video app to stay in touch with old friends and extended family.

Keep extended family and close friends updated on how your family is settling in via email or a private blog. Discourage older children from spending too much time on social networking sites. Seeing their friends returning to life without them can be painful and reinforce a sense of loneliness.

Tip #7: Get acquainted.

Take walks around your new neighborhood. The exercise and fresh air will help relieve stress and familiarize you and your children with your new surroundings. Play outside on nice days. Chances are you and your kids will meet a few neighbors.

After settling in, invite a few neighbors over for a potluck barbecue.

Tip #8: Prepare your child for a new school.

But how often, in the midst of hectic times in our lives, do we jettison all the healthy instructions we know we should be repeating to ourselves right then when we need it most?

Forgive yourself for past errors in judgment or action, make amends with others swiftly as needed, and resist the tendency to be too hard on yourself. So sit yourself down and commit these phrases to memory.

This list of notes-to-self will remind you how to take care of yourself in the short run, so you can better take care of your whole family in the long run, and set a good example for a lifetime of healthy self-talk, too.

One: I Am Allowed To Say “No Thanks.” If you feel harried and hectic, running from one family activity to the next, you may have forgotten how to bow out gracefully. All you likely need is a little practice in the ‘no thank you’ department. Once you get back in the habit of weighing and measuring before you commit, your schedule will calm down and you can better choose how to divide and conquer your time. Just remember, in times of distress, the cure is often the shortest word you know.

Four: Home Is Sacred. Creating a safe, secure, stress-free home helps everyone in the family feel more loved and loving.

Undercurrents of strife can undermine a family’s need for relaxation and rejuvenation. Try to make your home a relaxed respite where everyone feels welcome and appreciated. Then family members can carry that feeling of sacred space out into the world when they leave home, too.

When you spend time doing things you enjoy, your energy goes up.

For caregivers, it takes conviction to carve out time for selfexpression, otherwise it inevitably falls to the bottom of the priority list.

Sometimes it’s hard to share what you think, especially if your opinion goes against the grain, and speaking up is a risk that’s always worth taking.

Nine: Tomorrow Is Going To Be Great. Things don’t

stay the same, so it’s important to expect life to be an adventure in growth and change. If you have a very traditional mindset and you like routine, it may take courage to embrace the idea of life as a continual evolution. Mia and The White Lion

Missing Link MPAA Rating: PG Overall: AViolence: B Sexual Content: A Profanity: AAlcohol / Drug Use: BSir Lionel Frost (Hugh Jackman) is desperate to prove the existence of all manner of fantastic beasts, from mermaids to unicorns, and even the Loch Ness Monster! Frost hopes to use this evidence to earn him entrance to an exclusive club for famous adventurers, “The Optimates Club”. Unfortunately for Frost, his membership is heavily opposed by its leader, Lord Piggot-Dunceb (Stephen Fry), who makes a wager with Frost, guaranteeing admission to the club if he can prove the existence of Bigfoot. As Frost leaves, Lord PiggotDunceb immediately sets out to sabotage him, hiring diminutive hitman Willard Stenk (Timothy Olyphant) to track him down. When Frost finds the Bigfoot, who assumes the name of Susan Link (Zach Galifianakis), Frost makes another deal: he will help Susan find a new home, and in return, Susan will give him some samples to take back to the Optimate Club to prove his existence.

I’ll start with my gripes, since they’re pretty minor. First, the plot is basically just a reworking of Jules Verne’s classic novel, Around the World in 80 Days, but with a lonely Sasquatch replacing Passepartout. Second, the film builds a lot of jokes around Susan’s tendency to take everything literally, which for me, stopped being funny back when Star Trek was doing that with Data.

Otherwise, Missing Link is a fun and surprisingly charming kids’ movie.

The voice cast is superb, and Hugh Jackman is clearly having a blast. While some of the jokes fell a little flat, by being too complex for younger viewers and too dumb for parents, others got laughs from the whole theatre.

MPAA Rating: PG Overall: BViolence: C Sexual Content: B+ Profanity: BAlcohol / Drug Use: B+ Eleven-year-old Mia (Daniah DeVilliers) is unhappy. Having grown up in London, she has been homesick since her South African father, John (Langley Kirkwood), moved the whole family back home to run the lion farm he inherited.

Then a miracle occurs and a million-to-one white lion cub is born on their farm.

Everyone is excited – except for Mia. But the Charlie the lion cub has a charming little furry face and they form a powerful bond. As Charlie grows, Mia refuses to acknowledge that he is a wild animal and defies her father’s warnings about the dangers. When John discovers the extent of his daughter’s disobedience and the peril to which she has exposed herself, he decrees the immediate sale of the now grown white lion. Learning about Charlie’s likely fate, fourteen-yearold Mia decides that her only hope is to take Charlie to a nature reserve where he will be free to live in the wild – no matter what it takes.

This film may sound like a heartwarming boy and his dog, girl-and-her-lion story, but there are some very troubling aspects to this production which should give parents pause. Most obvious is Mia’s cavalier attitude towards safety around her adored lion and her constant disobedience and disregard for her own safety. Whether parents want to take their kids to Mia and the White Lion will likely depend on their sympathy with the film’s message. The writers are deeply concerned about the danger lions face from hunters. Unfortunately, the film tries a bit too hard and instead of sharing its message it bludgeons the audience with it. In communications terms, this is overkill.

Penguins

Breakthrough

MPAA Rating: G Overall: A Violence: B Sexual Content: A Profanity: A Alcohol / Drug Use: A Penguins have long been a surefire winner at the box office. Films about these flightless seabirds range from the documentary March of the Penguins to the animated musical comedies like Happy Feet. Disneynature’s Penguins has found the sweet spot between the two. In this kid-friendly and parent-pleasing release, the directors have married documentary-style footage with a comical script to make an educational film that will have audiences laughing out loud.

The story focuses on Steve, a hapless but never hopeless Adélie penguin. Steve is running behind on the annual spring trek from Antarctica’s ice shelf to the rock-strewn mountains where his species mate and raise their chicks. Competition is fierce for the best nesting sites, although what makes any one site more desirable than another is far from obvious to a mere human viewer. Steve struggles to build a nest, getting struck by one penguin and having his carefully gathered rocks stolen by another. But eventually, his nest is complete and he manages to woo and win Adeline, who subsequently lays two eggs. The two penguins then face the arduous task of raising babies in the harshest environment on earth – and that’s just the summer.

Obviously, this film has very little for parents to worry about. There are some scenes of peril where South Polar Skua birds hunt baby penguins and where killer whales prowl the channels of open water seeking prey. And there is a terrifying moment where a leopard seal hunts Steve’s chicks. But the G rating for this movie is well deserved and only the most sensitive of children will find anything upsetting here.

You are loved.” So Joyce Smith (Chrissy Metz) repeatedly tells her moody 14-year-old son, John (Marcel Ruiz). Joyce is concerned about her increasingly uncommunicative teen and then the unthinkable happens – he falls through the lake ice and drowns. John is declared dead, Joyce prays, and John’s pulse miraculously returns. But he is hanging to life by a thread which may snap at any minute. Can John’s family, church, and wider community exercise their faith and call down a miracle from heaven?

Breakthrough has an earnest, multiracial cast, who, despite the fact that they sometimes seem to be reciting lines rather than living them, do so with real sincerity. The movie also takes on the joys and trials of being part of a church congregation and portrays the petty conflicts that can arise when wellmeaning people irritate each other as well as the wonderful acts of kindness and support that a faith community can provide. And the film is almost entirely free of objectionable content.

Unfortunately, Breakthrough also has some significant near misses.

Watching Joyce, viewers may be driven to wonder where the line is between steadfast faith and delusional determination. Is Joyce faith-filled or irrational?

Is her faith based in God’s will or her preferred outcome? And it’s a real disappointment that the script doesn’t go deeper here. Criticisms aside, Christians (or non-believers) who are grappling with feelings of divine abandonment, loss or doubt may feel that the movie isn’t able to break through their pain to provide the inspiration and comfort they seek.
