In August of 2015 Georgia Byrd experienced stomach problems leading to multiple doctor visits. In October, Georgia was rushed to the ER with lost vision, inability to talk and mouth drooping. By December at age 12, Georgia was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, an extremely rare soft tissue cancer. Georgia has undergone 2 major surgeries to remove cancerous masses, has had multiple rounds of chemo and is currently going through radiation.

Publisher’sNote I was going through some photos and I ran across a few of my daughter and her preschool best friend, Rose, at a birthday party. Rose and Mary-Bradley were two peas in a pod who met at daycare when they were 12 weeks old. Rose’s mom and I were (and still are) the best of friends, and the girls spent almost every day together until kindergarten when they went to different schools. Their birthdays were only a week apart so naturally Marie and I decided to start hosting joined birthday parties. I am not sure who had more fun, the girls or us. Choosing themes was always fun, too. We had an inflatable animal party, a precious dress-up tea party, and the infamous five-year-old karaoke party. We obviously didn’t think that one through too much. Imagine a group of five year olds on a sugar high with microphones. Yikes! Hosting joined birthday parties is not only more efficient, but can be a lot of fun! While finding themes for these two besties was easy, if you are planning a boy/girl combo party, choosing a theme may be a little more challenging. Fortunately Pam Molnar has come to the rescue with some great ideas in this month’s article, The Combined Birthday Party: How to Host a Party for Boys and Girls. I love celebrating birthdays! It’s not just the party either. I love making each one in my family feel special on their big day. I decorate in the dark of the night in hopes of kicking off their day with a festive mood. If you want to take it even a step further than a few decorations and a birthday dinner, you can find more ideas in 5 Ways to Go Beyond the Birthday Party, by Jessica Graham. In keeping with the party theme for our July “Birthday Party” issue, we have put together the annual Birthday Party Planning Guide on page 65. Speaking of celebrating, Eastern Shore Parents magazine recently celebrated its 9th anniversary! When we set out to create a publication that would celebrate the wonderful families in this community and give parents the information and resources they need, we had no idea we would receive the outpouring of support we have enjoyed over the years. We want to extend a giant “Thank You” to all of the advertisers who make it possible to provide the magazine free each month, all of the schools for the amazing school news, local organizations for the fun local events, local businesses that allow us to distribute the magazines and, of course, all of the readers who reach out to us with their feedback and encouragement. What a blessing it is to have a job where we are able to serve the community and have fun at the same time! I would also like to take this time to especially thank all of the men, women and families who sacrifice so much to serve our country. As we celebrate our country’s independence on July 4, I want you to know that I am praying for you, your families and for our country. Nip “High Self-Esteem Seizures” in the Bud Q:

My 30-month-old has started throwing tantrums when I do not give her or do for her what she wants. During her fits, she cries, screams, tries to hit and even bite me, and then, if I prevent her from hitting me, will hit herself. My mother says this needs to be nipped in the bud. She recommends spanking. I say my daughter really doesn’t know what she’s doing and is too young to be disciplined for this. I’m also concerned about her self-hitting. What do you say?

A: I say your mother is right. But then again, I disagree with her concerning her recommendation that you spank your daughter when she has a tantrum. By the way, I prefer to call them “high self-esteem seizures” because they are the rage of the naturally narcissistic child at having someone—a parent, usually—refuse to immediately satisfy his or her unquenchable lust for entitlement. First, your daughter’s tantrums are kneejerk reactions; nonetheless, she is a highly intelligent member of a self-aware species.

Don’t confuse “she cannot explain what she is doing” with “she does not know what she is doing.” Believe me, she knows what she is doing. She is trying to get her way and she believes that becoming an emotional volcano will accomplish that objective. You’ve probably given in a time or two, haven’t you? Yes, you have! Fact: If a parent gives in to one tantrum out of twenty, twenty more are instantly loaded into the clip. Second, you would do well to nip these seizures in the bud, or bloom, whatever the case may now be. As I said, however, I do not recommend spanking. I have no problem with spankings per se (research done by objective people does not find psychological harm—and even finds benefit—when spankings are infrequent and hand-administered by loving parents), but when the issue is a toddler’s tantrums they are not likely to accomplish anything. Third, your daughter’s self-hitting does not merit concern. As you make clear, she does not hit herself randomly but only when you prevent her from hitting you. Under

the circumstances, her self-abuse is what is known as a “displacement.” Also, she probably saw that hitting herself provoked a reaction from you, so she persists. Fourth, the most effective means of nipping these seizures in the bud or bloom is to assign them to a designated tantrum place. When our daughter Amy was this age and her sense of entitlement got the best of her, my wife and/or I simply directed her or dragged her kicking and screaming to her very special tantrum room—the downstairs half-bath. We put her in, told her that this was the only room in the home where tantrums were allowed, encouraged her to scream to her little heart’s content, closed the door, and walked away. For what usually was less than a minute, Amy would scream, shriek, kick and pound the door, and otherwise go completely berserk. Then she would become silent and, we assumed, sulk. Then she would emerge, go straight to her room and begin entertaining herself as if nothing had happened. In short, tantrums are no big deal unless allowed to become a big deal. Weeks Bay Foundation Pelican Paddle Canoe and Kayak Race On Saturday, August 5, the Weeks Bay Foundation will be hosting their 5th annual Pelican Paddle Canoe and Kayak Race. This is an amazing family-friendly event that showcases the beauty of Weeks Bay, gets folks out on the water, and provides a little friendly competition. Racers will compete in categories such as solo kayak, tandem craft, stand up paddleboard, and non-traditional craft. We even have a junior division and a pro division, which runs a 7 mile course! For those folks who aren’t interested in racing, we will have a leisurely guided Eco-Tour. This part of the event is great for nature lovers and inexperienced paddlers. Don’t have a canoe or kayak? The Foundation might be able to help. Fairhope Boat Company and 17 Turtles Outfitters have generously donated a limited number of canoes and kayaks to be loaned out to people who don’t have their own equipment. 2017 Flavors of the South - Food and Wine Showcase

Join The Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce for the 2017 Flavors of the South held to showcase food and wine from local restaurants and caterers. DYW “Be Your Best Self” Boot Camp for 3rd-6th Grade Girls

Distinguished Young Women of Baldwin County invites third through sixth grade girls to participate in its "Be Your Best Self" Boot Camp. Boot Camp will meet August 19 at KB Danz Studio in Summerdale and August 26 at Coastal Alabama Community College. Both sessions will meet from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Boot Camp participants will also participate in an onstage performance at the DYW 2017 program. Participation includes: two boot camp sessions with current and former program contestants; perform on stage during the DYW 2017 program “Be Your Best Self”; on-stage performance during DYW 2017 program; two program tickets; group photos; camp materials; refreshments and a Be Your Best Self camp t-shirt. Holly Rowe to Speak at Healthy Woman Ninth Anniversary Event

The Healthy Woman program at South Baldwin Regional Medical Center will host keynote speaker Holly Rowe at their annual celebration dinner on Thursday, August 17 at 7:00 p.m. at the Orange Beach Event Center at The Wharf. Rowe, an Emmy-nominated reporter with ESPN, is not only a producer, writer and reporter, but also a two-time cancer survivor. 20th Annual Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation Professional Rodeo Fundraiser

Professional cowboys and cowgirls from all over the country are getting ready for their favorite Southeastern Rodeo, the 20th Annual Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation Professional Rodeo on Thursday, August 3rd, Friday, August 4th and Saturday, August 5th, 2017 at the City of Foley Horse Arena, 113 East Rosetta Ave., Foley. This Rodeo features exciting events including bull riding, barrel racing, bareback riding, calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling, break away roping and much more. Pre-rodeo festivities in conjunction with the rodeo that are free to the public will all be held at the Foley Horse Arena. The Queens’ Horsemanship Contest is Thursday, July 27th which will include the crowning of the queens. Two Barrel Racing events, also free to spectators, will be on Tuesday, August 1st and Saturday morning, August 5th. The Rodeo kicks off each night at 8:00 p.m. with FREE children’s activities beginning nightly at 6:00 p.m. General admission tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for children ages 4-12 years old, and free for ages 3 and under. Thomas Hospital Auxiliary Welcomes Junior Volunteers

Thomas Hospital welcomes 52 students from American Academy, Bayshore Christian School, Bayside Academy, Central Christian School, Daphne High School, Fairhope High School, Gulf Shores High School, McGill-Toolen Catholic High School, Robertsdale High School, Spanish Fort High School, St. Paul’s Episcopal School, and UMS-Wright Preparatory School participating in the Thomas Hospital Auxiliary’s Junior Volunteer program this summer. They are volunteering in the Cath Lab, Clinical Education, Fitness Center, Human Resources, Materials Management, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, Surgery and Women’s and Children’s departments at Thomas Hospital. They will also volunteer in several Auxiliary service areas – emergency department waiting area, gift shop, information desk, and transportation at Thomas Hospital, and the surgery waiting area and information desk at Thomas Medical Center in Daphne. The Thomas Hospital Auxiliary Junior Volunteer program is offered to high school students between the ages 14 to 17 who maintain at least a B average and have an interest in volunteering at the hospital during the summer. The program runs from June 5 to July 28. The goals of the program, are to give service to the hospital, increase community understanding and interest in the hospital, and further interest in health careers. Original Oyster House Chelsea Garvin Spirit Scholarship Winners

The Original Oyster House awarded the 12th Annual Chelsea Garvin Spirit Scholarships to Laura Cohen of Fairhope High School and Meagan Daves of Bayside Academy. Chelsea Garvin was a 2004 graduate of Fairhope High School, a Fish River Fire Department volunteer, an Original Oyster House employee and a talented artist whose life was cut short in a boating accident in 2005. Since 2006, the Original Oyster House has awarded two $1,000 Chelsea Garvin Spirit Award scholarships to senior high school students of Baldwin County. The scholarship opportunity is not based on financial need, but rather academics, being involved in community arts and artwork that reflects the culture of the well-loved iconic seafood restaurant as well as the spirit of Chelsea Garvin. Cecilia Mace, marketing director of the Original Oyster House presented Cohen the scholarship and stated, “What I love about Laura’s artwork is it invites you in instantly with its wonderful textures and intriguing palette. After you examine it you start to realize the statement the artist makes, and someone like me who was an art major, thinks wow, I wish I could have done that at such a young age.” Mace also presented Maegan Dave’s scholarship at her senior awards ceremony at Bayside Academy. “Maegan’s submission this year nailed the Oyster House brand and highlighted Oyster Shell recycling which was first piloted in the state of Alabama this past year, at the Original Oyster House restaurants through the Alabama Coastal foundation. The crucial recycling of shell will help restore the reef, clean Alabama's waters prevent coastal erosion, and boost productivity of not only oysters but fish, shrimp, crab and seafood we love to eat,” said Mace. The winning artworks will be displayed in both Original Oyster House restaurants for local patrons and visitors from all over the country to enjoy. The winners will be given restaurant gift certificates to see first-hand their artwork displayed with family and friends, as well as an exclusive three day, four night trip to New York. Fore! The 411 on Golf Cart Safety Hey guys! Well, summer is officially here and it’s gonna be hot! There are so many things to do in Baldwin County—the beaches, fishing, swimming, boating and just good ole fashioned playing outside until its dark. One thing that is becoming more and more popular are golf carts on the road. Today we are going to talk about the different types of carts, some common sense rules for the road, and some potential safety hazards for you and your children. In 2016, Baldwin County voters decided to allow more freedom in the usage of golf carts on city streets and left the enforcement of type and how to each municipality. So, let’s talk about the different types. Of course, there are your old fashioned regular golf carts with golf cart bag holders in the very back. These typically do not go very fast and usually do not have seat belts, blinkers, rear view mirrors, or any other safety measures. Next, there are a lot of modified golf carts from the original types. Most of these have bigger tires, four to eight seats, seat belts and maybe some rear view mirrors. Then, then are electric carts that have VIN numbers and tags with all safety measures you would have as if you were driving an actual car. Some are four seaters and can

go 20-25 mph and some have very sturdy frames and can go up to 40 mph! Regardless of the style of cart someone has, there is one unifying theme. In a motor vehicle collision, the car, truck or SUV will always win and therefore the passengers in a golf cart are at risk! So what can you do? First, any golf cart should be driven by someone who has a driver’s license. Yes, it’s fun for the kids to cruise around the neighborhood, but you know as well as I do that kids can be dumb. They do not look out for other drivers, rarely buckle up, and do not follow the rules of the road. I have personally seen golf carts driving around the Eastern Shore loaded down with kids (most of whom are not buckled up) and flying down the road. Unfortunately, golf carts can flip easily. If you have one with a lot of kids loaded up and turn quickly, it will flip. Next, check with your local police for what safety measures your golf cart needs and where it is safe to drive. Most of the common measures are seat belts, blinkers, rear view mirrors, brake lights, windshield wipers, reflectors, parking brakes, and oftentimes a VIN number with tag. Depending on the style of cart you have, most will also need to have a minimum

threshold speed of 20 mph with a max of 25 mph. This is to ensure that if you are driving on a city street you do not impede traffic by going to slow and also that you don’t go too fast as to endanger yourself or others. Finally, let’s talk about things that can hurt you or your child. First, unless your cart is made to drive above 25 mph, then do not go on a road with a speed limit of more than 35 mph. And please stay off the four lane! I’ve seen golf carts driving down and crossing Greeno Rd. Not only is it dangerous, but you will get a ticket in a heartbeat. Use common sense. Buckle up, use your blinkers or your arms to signal turns, check your blind spots and no sharp turns. Of course, we worry about our kids, but I’ve seen adults acting dangerously on golf carts as well, so be a good example to your family. Have a great summer! Wear sunscreen, use bug spray and be safe!

Kindergarten Read-a-thon at OBES

Ms. Hollis’ kindergarten students at Orange Beach Elementary School have read books from February 9th to April 9th for their annual Read-a-thon. Eighteen students read a total of 2,339 books. Top Readers were: Jake Watts, 1st place with 371 books read; Averi Adams, 2nd place having read 337 books; and Hayes Moss, 3rd place with 301 books read. The students in Ms. Hollis’ class are building a love for reading.

Fairhope Intermediate School Student Places in Top 5 at National Chess Tournament

Rhett Montgomery, a fifth grader at Fairhope Intermediate School, participated in Super Nationals VI, the largest chess tournament in the nation, and tied for 4th place in his division by winning six out of seven games. The tournament took place over the May 12-14 weekend and drew over 5,500 players from around the country. Montgomery played in the K-8 division for those with a competitive rating under 750, and there were 376 players in that section. Along the way, he defeated opponents from New York (2), Delaware, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Oklahoma. Several other players in the section also scored six points, so Montgomery took home the 14th place trophy on tiebreaks. Rhett is coached privately by Eric Nager, the Chess Coach at Bayside Academy. According to Nager, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I started coaching Rhett in February and his success has been phenomenal. In 17 years of coaching I have only had one other player who scored six wins at a national tournament. What makes his accomplishment even better is that this was only his second rated tournament.â&#x20AC;? Rhett and his family are also thankful for one of his teachers, Amy Harding, who first suggested he try Chess. Montgomery also played in the unrated section of the Bayside Open in February. This is an annual fund raising tournament to support the travels of the Bayside Academy Chess Team, and Rhett tied for third in that event. Missionaries Speak to Bayshore Christian School Spanish Class

The Bayshore Christian School Spanish 1 class ended their school year with special speakers Dr. Paul Fellers and his wife Flor Fellers. They shared with BCS students about the wonderful ministry they lead in Ecuador with Bayside Medical Missions. It was a great testimony to hear about their servant heart providing medical service to Hispanics in Ecuador and also the amazing opportunity they have to share the gospel in Spanish. They truly demonstrate the effectiveness of being able to speak Spanish in reaching out to the Hispanics abroad and in our communities for Christ. It was an honor to have these special guests help wrap up the school year at BCS!

Tiger "Solar Tree" Installed at Baldwin County HS

When students return to Baldwin County High School in August there will be a new resourceful addition. The BCHS 21st CCLC Afterschool Program collaborated with SunFarm Energy to install a Solar Tree in the school's courtyard. The solar structure will provide clean energy and, of course, allow students to charge their tech gadgets during breaks. The tree was customized with school colors of orange and black and also features the Tiger logo in the center. It is the first of its kind on a school campus in Baldwin County.

Fairhope Teacher on Cutting Edge of Science Initiative

Fairhope High School science teacher Mary Stuart is one of only four Alabama teachers to be recognized as an Early Adopter for the HudsonAlpha’s Bicentennial Barcoding Project. HudsonAlpha’s Bicentennial Barcoding Project is a citizen science effort to genetically catalog Alabama’s native plant diversity. For the project, Alabama high school students and educators will work with community partners to create an archive of plant species across the state. HudsonAlpha Educational Outreach will provide training and classroom resources for the two-year project, beginning with a small group of early adopters who attended a training session at HudsonAlpha in April. Stuart, pictured seated far right, joins educators and community partners in the quest to catalogue Alabama’s native plant life.

CTKCS Student Takes 1st Place for State Contest

Foley HS Junior Ambassadors Hold Closing Ceremony

On Monday, April 10th, 2017, the South Baldwin Chamber Foundation held the 19th annual closing ceremony for the Foley High School Junior Ambassadors' Program at the Foley Civic Center. The ceremony was sponsored by Ascend Performance Materials and Riviera Utilities. A strong tradition in the Foley community, the Junior Ambassadors' Program is a youth leadership development program designed to inspire outstanding youth to reach full leadership potential. The program focuses on: business, government, environment, community service, communications, and interpersonal skills. Gulf Shores Middle School Cheerleaders Bring Home Multiple Awards from Florida Camp

The Gulf Shores Middle School cheerleaders did an amazing job at the Universal Cheerleaders Association Camp at the Beach Club Resort. The squad received a Gold Superior ribbon for sideline evaluations, Gold Superior ribbon for cheer evaluations, and a Gold Superior ribbon for the extreme routine evaluations. Two cheerleaders, Lucy Wheeler and Addison Reddick, got the Pin It Forward Award which is given to cheerleaders who exemplify leadership skills, genuine spirit, commitment and kindness. Three cheerleaders, Caroline Hudson, Madison Harpster and Katherine Herring were chosen as UCA All American Cheerleaders. The team was awarded a spirit stick for demonstrating teamwork in classes. For the final day awards, the squad received a trophy for Cheer Champions, a trophy for placing second in the Extreme Routine and the Top Banana award which is given to the squad that obeys camp rules, is on time for each activity, participates in all aspects of the camp curriculum, and shows spirit and enthusiasm. Spanish Fort HS Student Wins B & N Essay Contest

Spanish Fort High School freshman, Fariha Irfan, has won the local Barnes & Noble’s “My Favorite Teacher” Essay Contest in which she wrote about her favorite teacher and how that teacher inspired her. The teacher she wrote about was Jessica Jackson, SFHS Theatre Director. She and the teacher both received B&N gift cards in addition to flowers, balloons, and certificates. If she wins nationally, she’ll receive $500 and a Nook, and the teacher will receive $5,000 to use for classroom scripts and books, and the school/ library will also receive $5,000. Rotary Youth Club Receives $15,000 Donation

The Rotary Youth Club welcomed a generous donation in May of $15,000 from St. Joseph's Way, represented by Allan Lipscomb and BG Hinds. St. Joseph's Way - in partnership with Sister Julie - has been a longtime source of support for the disadvantaged in the Fairhope community. Board members, club members and RYC Director Louise Mason were on hand for the check presentation. The funds will provide a major boost to the club's growing Summer Enrichment Academy, with more than 100 participants enjoying field trips, art, music and enrichment, with academic support in July to prepare students for a successful school year.

GSES 6th Grader Breaks AR Record

One of our own sixth graders at Gulf Shores Elementary School has accomplished an amazing feat! Accelerated Reader is a program where students read books and take quizzes, earning points. Books are rated with different points depending on their difficulty. Kaysheri Haffner, a sixth-grader at Gulf Shores Elementary School, has shattered the school’s record for Accelerated Reader points by earning more than 2000 points in the program this school year. The previous record was approximately 1,200 points. This is a very rare feat according to her teachers, who admit that on a few occasions, the young bookworm has been caught reading during recess. Kaysheri, a straight-A student, read over 13 million words this year according to the Accelerated Reader Program. Most books were worth 15 to 20 points on average including “Empire of Storms” by Sarah Maas that was worth 30 points. Kaysheri says she has always enjoyed reading and usually has close to fifty books checked out at one time from the city library. Renaissance Learning, the company that provides Accelerated Reader Program to schools, noted recently on Kaysheri’s accomplishment, “Congratulations! That's a huge accomplishment! We always love seeing students exceed their goals!”

The Bayshore Christian School Lego Club was proud to host the 2017 Annual Lego Show. Many BCS students and home-school students submitted Lego sculptures that they dreamed up and created on their own. Several local engineers, architects, and scientists are invited to come in and judge the show each year. OBES Students Visit Montgomery

Fourth graders in Mrs. Godbold’s, Mrs. Watts’ and Ms. Bradford’s classes from Orange Beach Elementary School visited Montgomery to see the Alabama State Capitol and Old Town Alabama Village. Students were given a tour of the capitol. At the historic village, the 19th and early 20th century homes and buildings have been saved from demolition, carefully restored, and reopened to the public as a history museum. At Old Alabama Town, students learned how early Americans of all backgrounds lived and worked in Central Alabama. Pictured, Mrs. Godbold and Mrs. Watts’ 4th grade classes stand admiring the hidden meaning in our previous Alabama State Governors’ portraits. They also viewed the paintings on the dome above the rotunda. The murals, painted by a Mobile artist from 1926-1930, illustrate the history of Alabama.

BCHS Tiger Band Closes Out Successful Marching, Concert Season

The Baldwin County High School Tiger Band closed out its season with a special banquet at Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department. The banquet serves as a time to recognize current and future students in leadership positions, and to present awards and scholarships. Rising Bayside Academy Seniors Selected as Alabama Boys and Girls State Delegates

Three Bayside Academy rising seniors were selected as delegates to attend Alabama Boys and Girls State in early June at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Emily McCrory attended Alabama Girls State, while David Ham and Andrew Smith attended Alabama Boys State. As student delegates, McCrory, Ham and Smith built new friendships, participated in a mock government, and heard from and met an array of Alabama leaders, including congressmen, state-elected officials, business leaders and civic leaders. Student delegates also had the opportunity to join groups that focused on their individual areas of interest such as lobbying, law school, law enforcement academy, aerospace academy, city government, county government, constitutional convention, engineering/computer academy and environmental issues. Recreational activities also were part of the program. Alabama Girls State is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary; Alabama Boys State is sponsored by the American Legion. The objective of these programs is to train young people in the ideals, objectives and basic principles of American government and successful management of a democratic society. Bayside Academy is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school for students in grades PK-12. Bayside Academy Rising Senior Grayson York to Attend Summer Programs at Ole Miss

Bayside Academy rising senior Grayson York will attend two summer programs at The University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi. Based on his service and leadership experience, York was selected to attend the Apex Leadership Summit June 21—24. At the summit, York will join other outstanding students from across the nation to gain team-building skills, strengthen leadership traits and participate in service-action opportunities. A goal of the program is to prepare and educate future leaders and public servants. York also was selected to attend Mississippi StarTalk 2017 June 28—July 28. Funded by the federal government, this program provides high school students with intensive instruction in Chinese on the Ole Miss campus during the second summer session. In addition to studying Chinese inside and outside of the classroom, students participate in a cultural program introducing them to China, its people and its culture. Students receive scholarships covering the cost of their instruction, books, campus housing and meals. All students who complete the program receive college credit in Mandarin Chinese.

A Week of Change was held by the Project Outreach Program at SFHS to bring awareness to disabilities. The theme was “Open Doors to Disabilities”. The week began with a school-wide assembly with an ice cream social and activities through the week. The week ended with a door decorating contest.

Sea Cadets Honor Military Members, Past and Present

Dunlap Division, of the US Naval Sea Cadets, spent the month of May honoring those who have and are currently serving in our armed forces. On Saturday May 20th, Armed Forces Day, the unit participated in the Blue Star Salute aboard the USS Alabama. This year's ceremony commemorates the 100th anniversary of WWI and the birth of the blue star banner. Dunlap Division had the honor of laying a wreath off the bow of the Alabama and manning the rails during the ceremony. Later that morning the public had an opportunity to watch our brave Coast Guardsmen at work. Members of the USCG flew from ATC Mobile to the battleship to demonstrate a rescue swimmer being lowered onto and lifted off of the ship. On Memorial Day, Dunlap Division color guard was honored to present the colors for the ceremony at the Mobile National Cemetery and remember those who have given their lives for our great nation. Naval Sea Cadets is designed for young men and women ages 10 to high school graduation who are interested in expanding their knowledge of our military. The sea cadets instill patriotism and leadership skills. Dunlap division meets one weekend a month at the U.S. Coast Guard Aviation Center in Mobile, and the cadets are under no obligation to join the military; however, if they do decide to enlist they are usually eligible to enlist at a higher pay grade. The program offers ROTC scholarships. Rotary Youth Club Receives Alabama First Class Pre-K Grant

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey and the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education announced the Rotary Youth Club of Fairhope/Point Clear as one of 122 new Pre-K classrooms for the fall of 2017. The $85,000 grant ensures a pilot program launched this spring will continue as an important piece of the Club’s commitment to education and opportunity for learners of all ages in the community. The Rotary Youth Club received the only grant in Baldwin County this year. “Offering a Pre-K program has been a dream of this board and its supporters for years,” said Board Chair Ed Hammele. “We opened our first classroom this spring thanks to the generosity of local donors, with hopes we would win this state grant to keep going. We’re thrilled to now be a part of Alabama’s award-winning Pre-K program at last. The licensing and application process confirmed what we knew from our club member parents – that this area offers far too few early learning opportunities for our children. We want to be part of the solution.” The new classrooms were made possible due to increased appropriations in the FY 2018 Education Trust Fund Budget along with funding from year three of Alabama’s four-year federal Preschool Development Grant. This latest commitment increases the number of classrooms to 938 – enrolling approximately 16,884 four-year-olds. While now impacting 28% of Alabama’s Pre-K eligible children, the program’s goal is 100% access. The Rotary Youth Club program is led by veteran Kindergarten teacher Sarah Seitz. Assisting in the classroom is Tylesha Gulley, a former Club member now working toward her teaching degree at Troy University. The Alabama School Readiness Alliance has consistently published studies reflecting the inarguable link between quality Pre-K and the rest of a child’s academic life. They head to school with better reading, writing and math abilities as well as the social skills that ensure “ready to learn” Kindergartners arriving at the school door. Studies also find fewer special education placements and behavior problems, higher graduation rates and even stronger economic productivity later in life. “This Pre-K grant caps off a remarkable year,” said RYC Executive Director Linda Mason. “Our after-school program had record enrollment of 120 students. We’ve never had so many volunteers involved with after-school tutoring, enrichment like sailing, gardening, music, art, technical skill training and so much more. Our entire team is energized by what’s happening here. And this grant means we’ll continue reaching our very youngest learners. Autauga County Schools Bayside Academy Rising Junior Mary Helene Hall Attends Digital Media Camp at Mercer University

Bayside Academy rising junior Mary Helene Hall received a scholarship to attend digital media summer camp June 11—17 at the Center for Collaborative Journalism located at Mercer University’s campus in Macon, Georgia. At the program, Hall joined top high school students from some of the nation’s leading journalism, yearbook and media programs to learn the latest tools for digital storytelling. The program has been described by The New York Times as “one of the nation’s boldest journalism experiments.” Working with CCJ’s university faculty and partner journalists, program participants learned how to tell compelling stories in a multimedia format through photo, video, audio, mobile tools and the written word. Campers gained experience in the following areas: Building mobile apps, Learning HTML, CSS and JavaScript, Honing writing and photography skills, Harnessing the power of social media, Building radio and video content and Working with professional editors and reporters. Bayside Academy is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school for students in grades PK-12. Putting an End to Your Teen’s Selfishness Some parents feed their teen’s selfishness into adult years by continuing to rotate their life around them. I tell parents that at age 15 it is time for them to begin aggressively helping their teen get over a selfish mindset. Instead of always wanting to be “served” by mom and dad, older teens need to do things for themselves and also learn to serve others. After all, they are potentially only a few short years away from having to live totally unselfishly as parents themselves. Should this selfishness be allowed to grow during the teen years it will only accentuate into other problems after they leave home. So how do you put an end to your teen’s selfishness? First, you need to put on the brakes! Stop doing everything for your teen. Quit jumping every time he says “frog.” His control over your life and the life of others in your family is to cease, beginning now. Review the negative habit patterns you established in your home in the early years, and let it be known in a gentle way that you’ll no longer be doing a lot of the things that you had been doing to help them as a younger child. Break the news to them in this way: • I’ll no longer be doing your laundry. • I’ll no longer get you out of bed in the morning. • I’ll no longer accept childish whining from you. • I’ll not be doing what should be your chores, like cleaning your room or bathroom. I’ll no longer nag you about what you need to accomplish. • I’ll no longer pay for gas or give you spending money unless you earn it. Get my point? You have got to stop doing some things, so that your child can start learning to do some of these things for Eastern Shore Parents I July 2017

themselves. You stop and get out of the way, so he or she can start. If you don’t do this, your teen is not being required to grow up. And I see a great number of kids today that remain immature into early adulthood. That happens not because of forces of nature or culture, but because parents enable it. So the first step is to just stop. Can you do that? And I mean both parents, not just one. The second step then is to have a discussion with them about why you’re stopping. It doesn’t have to be a deep philosophical discussion about their need to learn responsibility. I would leave it as a simple, “Because you now have the ability to do it for yourself and I don’t want to do it anymore!” Any comments beyond that will only stir up further fruitless discussion. Let your teen know that you’re not doing “it” (whatever “it” is) because you don’t want to do “it” any more. You’ll be amazed how it will put him in a position of not being so demanding of you, and will put you in a position of not having to do everything for them. Sometimes it is best to let teenagers know that they will have to start these new responsibilities “this summer,” or, “when school starts,” or, “when you turn 15,” or, “the first of the year.” That way you prepare them for the change that is coming. Don’t drop it on them overnight. Maybe even work side by side with them for couple of weeks as you make the transition, but be clear when your assistance will stop and that you’ll not do it yourself during the transition period. They have to help. Again, here’s what to tell them: • They’ll be doing their own laundry and if not, they’ll have nothing to wear. • The alarm clock you are putting in their room is so they can wake themselves and get to school on time. If not, they’ll get in trouble at school. 48

• That you expect respectful talk and no more childish whining. • That you’ll help in emergencies, such as typing their homework if their fingers are broken (use a little humor). This is something one adult would do for another if they needed the help. • That you’re not going to nag them any more. You’ll ask once and that’s it. Then, they’ll have to suffer the consequences if they don’t do it in a timely fashion. • That they’ll have to begin earning some money to pay for their own gas for the car. You may pay for the insurance and some upkeep; but that’s it. • That they’ll have to clean their own room. If they want to live in a dump, that’s their choice. If they want a clean bathroom, you’ll purchase the cleaning materials, but that’s all. • They’ll have to change burned out light bulbs, wash towels, and scrub their own toilet. Say you can’t do those things for them because you can’t breathe when you’re in their room for the smell of the dirty shoes, socks and shorts. I’m sure that when you present these things to your son or daughter, you’ll get to see their selfishness in action. They won’t like it and may even throw a tantrum. If so, then it only says that you should have started this process sooner. They’ll drop the ball a few times and have to suffer the consequences as a result, but be sure not to rescue them from their selfishness nor lessen the consequences. Doing so will only cause selfishness and immaturity to continue. It’s a common phrase I use with kids: “I owe you nothing, but want to give you everything.” This phrase allows me to communicate a “counter” to their selfishness, and promotes a concept of respect.

Skipping to the Altar Q. My wife and I make good money, and our daughter’s college education is pretty much paid for through pre-paid tuition and scholarships. We just started your plan to get out of debt and take better control of our finances. When we get to Baby Step 5, which is saving for college, can we substitute that with saving for a wedding? A. That would be fine. I’m glad you’re thinking ahead. It’s always a good idea to save toward a wedding if you have the financial resources to do so, because weddings are real and they’re coming. The average wedding in America today runs around $35,000. Of course, you don’t have to pay anywhere near that amount to make it a beautiful occasion. Your household income, debt, savings and other factors will all play into how much you can afford.

Just remember to pay cash for the wedding. If you have to go into debt to make it happen, then you’re talking about too much money. It’s as simple as that. Crunch the numbers with your wife, and see what you two can handle. And remember, there’s absolutely no correlation between the cost of a wedding and the success of the relationship!

Bad Advice From a Bad Friend Q. My husband and I are currently in Baby Step 2, and paying off all our debt except for our home. A friend recently told us to pay off everything except for the credit card debt. She says we can then settle for a far less amount and not have so much money go-

ing out the door. This feels a little unethical to me. What are your thoughts? A. There’s a good reason this idea feel unethical to you — it is unethical! Would a good friend, a smart friend, encourage you to do something as dishonorable as not pay a bill you’re morally and legally obligated to pay? I don’t think so. If you’re able to pay your bills, you pay your bills. It’s as simple as that. Now, if you honestly can’t pay the bill, and you have to settle upon a mutually agreed upon amount with the creditor or collector, then it’s okay at that point to try and reach a settlement. Otherwise, it’s a simple question of ethics. Pay the bill!

Here are a few ways to capture moments, milestones and memories as your baby grows from toddler to teen. Say what?! Kids typically begin developing the ability to speak in two to three word sentences between 18 months and two years. Keep track of their quips, funny comments and profound observations in a quotes journal. A simple notebook will do the trick. Running around? Write down what they said on a scrap of paper. Note the date and their age and slip it into your notebook or your purse to record later. Dear Sugar. Ask friends and family to a write a letter to your child on her first birthday. Or write a letter a year sharing anecdotes and observations about your child’s development, achievements, disappointments and why you are proud of her. These letters make a precious gift for when your child turns 18. Remember this? Compile photos

annually into a scrapbook or a digital photo book. Among the snapshots of dayto-day outings, family vacations and birthday parties, include a page dedicated to highlighting your child’s accomplishments for that year. For example: learned to ride a bike, started kindergarten, learned to swim, lost first tooth, first home run, etc.

Talk to me. While you’ll probably video your child in action throughout childhood, take a few minutes each year to do a short interview once they start talking. Ask questions like, “What is your favorite food?” “What do you want to be when you grow up?” “What is your favorite thing to do?” “Who are your buddies right now?” A year in pictures. Have you ever

seen a compilation of photos of a child taken everyday in the same location for a year? It’s fascinating to watch a child grow up in a photo time lapse. Try the apps “Photo 365” or “Everyday app”.

Keep it simple. Throughout the year,

collect mementos in a manila folder. Include projects, letters, report cards, notes from teachers, pictures and letters by your child, medical records and school photos. At the end of each calendar year, school year or birthday, go through the file. Pick out the items you want to keep. Write the 53

year on the folder tab and stash it in a bin designated for your child.

Try this on for size. Take an an-

nual photo of your child in an oversized t-shirt with the date of their high school graduation. She’ll be swimming in it for the first photo, but by graduation she will have grown into it.

Patchwork of memories. Every child has t-shirts they love and wear over and over again. Over the years, they’ll also collect shirts of sporting events, favorite teams, camps, organizations and other activities that they’re involved in. Hang onto those items and have a quilt made out of the shirts to give them when they graduate from high school or college.

Beginning with your child’s first birthday, make wall art out of his growing handprints or footprints. Paint an eight-inch square canvas with acrylic paint. 8 Ways to Spark Summer Reading Most parents want to encourage reading, especially during the summer when kids often have more unstructured time. Now that so much reading occurs online, parents may wonder about the best way to nurture a reading habit. Is reading on a device as good as getting lost in an old-fashioned book? The emerging answer is that both print and digital reading have value, but they promote different ways of thinking. One revealing study found that college students prefer reading online when they are looking for quick information. However, when they really want to dig in and master new material, they turn to paper books. Without the distraction of clicks, students find they engage more deeply and comprehend more of what they read. Students also reported that they liked being able to manipulate physical books—underlining, writing notes in the margins, turning down corners and being able to thumb back to a favorite passage. This study suggests that online reading often resembles snacking--quick, easy to digest, maybe even a little addictive. Physical books offer more of a meal--stimulating and nourishing on many levels. Because kids gravitate naturally to devices (and snacks), parents may want to put a little effort into helping kids discover the pleasures of print. Fortunately, most kids are receptive. A biannual study of reading habits by Scholastic magazine found that 86% of kids think it’s important to be a good reader, and 6 in 10 agreed that, “I really enjoy reading books over the summer.” Here are some ideas about turning that spark into a flame.

Read aloud. In the Scholastic survey, kids 6–11 said that they enjoyed reading aloud, mostly because it was special time with their parents. Even after they can read independently, many kids and even teens enjoy settling in to listen to a good story. Kids who can read for Eastern Shore Parents I July 2017

themselves may enjoy taking turns reading. Or they might like to read dialogue with each child taking on the voice of a different character.

Hunt for books together. In the Scholastic study, 41% of kids said it was hard to find books they wanted to read. Turn the quest for good books into something you do as a family. Visit your local library regularly. Find out if there’s a story hour at the local bookshop. Hunt for bargain books at garage sales and thrift stores. Look for a Free Little Library in your neighborhood or create one of your own (littlefreelibrary.org/). Good lists of recommended books are also available from Reading Rockets (readingrockets. org/books/summer ) and the American Library Association (ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/notalists/ncb). Find books at the right level. Kids

sometimes disconnect from reading when books seem boring because they are too easy or frustrating because they are too hard. If possible, ask your child’s teacher to recommend books that are “just right” for your child. Or zero in on books at the right grade level by using the Scholastic book wizard (scholastic.com/teachers/bookwizard ).

Follow their lead. Like adults, kids read more of what they love. If a child gets hooked on a particular genre, author or series, run with it. And don’t get hung up on format. Magazines, graphic novels and comics can all be a gateway into reading. So can video or board games that include lots of written directions. For really reluctant readers, try activating captions on the television so kids can read along with their favorite shows. Make it social. Enthusiasm for reading is contagious, so encourage kids to share books they like whenever possible. Some kids 56

may enjoy writing reviews on kid-friendly sites like dogobooks.com or spaghettibookclub. org. Kids can also follow favorite authors online. Many interact with readers through local readings or websites that feature games and giveaways. Or consider organizing a summer book club. Find the right incentives. Just keeping a list of books they’ve finished can be motivating for some kids. Others will benefit from a small treat--maybe a gummy “bookworm” or a pack of Smarties. An entire board of clever incentives including Reading Bingo is available on Pinterest (tinyurl.com/lp6krcg). Consider using reading itself as a reward. During the summer, let children stay up an extra hour beyond bedtime--if they are reading. Set aside time. Designate a specific time for family reading. Turning off TV, computers and cellphones makes it clear that reading is a priority. To get a better picture of how your kids are spending summer days, try using the media time calculator as well as the media planner created by Healthy Children (tinyurl.com/z8wbef5). Get creative. Think about fun ways to integrate books into whatever you’re doing this summer. Instead of handing your child a cellphone during wait times, carry a chapter book that you can pull out in a doctor’s waiting room or between games at a tournament. Create a treasure hunt with a new book as the treasure. Have a Reading Picnic where everyone reads outside while munching on sandwiches. Take an audio book on your family road trip. Create a secret reading space by setting up a tent in the backyard or putting a sheet over a card table. Whatever you do, keep it light. If your goal is to have kids who read because they love it, making rules too rigorous or setting expectations too high can be counter-productive. Regardless of where you fall on the birthday party spectrum, the bottom line is that everyone wants their child to feel celebrated and special. After all, they will only be that age once. Here are a few ways to celebrate beyond just the birthday party.

Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s birthday parties have gotten so complicated. These days, young guests have busy schedules, cramming multiple parties into a single weekend or cutting parties short due to time constraints. When they do come, they bring their gluten-free, nut-free, dairy-free dietary restrictions with them. Play genie and grant your birthday boy or a girl a Yes Day. While a genie only gives three wishes, you will be granting your child an entire day of yes. Ice cream for breakfast? Yes! Skipping school in the lieu of a day at the beach? Yes! The only rule on Yes Day is that there are no rules. But before you let your child’s imagination run wild, wise parents may want to set a few parameters, such as that the requests need to be reasonable and, in our family, are not to include the acquisition of pets.

Start A New Tradition

We have a tradition that my parents started – the birthday chair. The birthday child wakes up to find his place at the breakfast table decorated with streamers, balloons and other goodies, like small snacks, lip glosses, light-up buttons announcing their age, etc… My children love the birthday chair and it’s a birthday must, even when we’re traveling. If you don’t have a tradition to carry on, it’s not too late to start one. You can deliver a special breakfast in bed, fill the room with balloons, or make a crepe paper “door” that your child has to burst through. Who knows, years from now, your child may be passing that tradition down to their children.

Plan A Trip

At first blush, a birthday trip sounds hard (and costly) to implement. But there are plenty of ways to gift a trip. You can take the whole family to a special destination, you can do a birthday getaway with both parents or you can make it a solo parent trip, for some quality one-on-one time. Finally, you can ask the grandparents to play tour guide. Because trips are harder to pull off, pick a set birthday for the celebration. The trip can take place when your child turns double digits, is sweet 16, or when you feel comfortable with them flying as an unaccompanied minor (if you’re sending them off to grandma and grandpa).

Give Goody Bags To The Parents

Even if you decide to go the traditional birthday party route, you can still shake things up a bit. I attended a recent birthday kid party where there were goody bags – for the moms. It was brilliant. After all, parents handle the RSVPs, buy the presents, and schlep the kids to the parties, why shouldn’t we be the ones to go home with the loot? ESP

My youngest two children, a girl and a boy, have birthdays that are three weeks apart. For their early years, when parties included primarily neighborhood friends, I combined their parties. I knew I had to come up with a theme that satisfied both genders in a range of ages. Here are a few party themes that work well for boys or girls.

Princess and Knights

Every little girl wants a princess party and every little boy needs to release some energy. Encourage your guests to dress up or provide costumes to wear when they arrive.

Games:

1. Cross the Moat – Start with a large board or a few 2 x 4’s and keep getting smaller as the game goes on. You can have your moat over a small swimming pool or simply sitting on the ground. 2. Cup Stacking Castle – Work as a team or as individuals to make the tallest and sturdiest castle. You can limit the amount of cups each team gets or set up guidelines like it must have 5 cups on the base. 3. Find Cinderella’s Shoe – Ask all the girls to take off their shoes and drop one in a bin. The girls will sit on chairs and the boys will have to grab one shoe and see who it belongs to. This is a good way to partner them up for the Cup Stacking Castle.

Craft:

Depending on their preference, the kids can decorate their own armor, mask or tiara as found on Oriental Trading. They also have some great castle crafts.

Pirates and Mermaids Similar to the Princess and Knight party, Pirates and Mermaids has something for everyone.

Games:

1. Sink the ship – Cut a pool noodle into slices to form circular boats and add a toothpick sail. Order bouncing balls in bulk to serve as your cannon balls. The guests serve as pirates and try to sink the ships with cannon balls. 2. Mermaid Race – Players will wear one leg of a pair of panty hose to cover both feet and legs. They will race on their bellies or backs as mermaids on land to see who gets there first. 3. Treasure Map – Find the treasure by following a map with clues. Set up in the party space or get the neighbors involved in a scavenger hunt.

Craft:

Use an empty Gatorade bottle to create an I-Spy bottle. Alternate filling the bottle with small toys and either colored sand or rice.

Neon Party

This is a fun indoor party with black light or outside after sunset. 63

Games:

1. Neon Glow Tag – Have the kids wear play clothes that can get paint on them. Supply everyone with a clean white t-shirt. Break the group into teams and arm them with a paintbrush and neon glow paint. Set up boundaries and encourage the guests to splatter as much paint as they can on the other players. For safety reasons, supply the kids with neon sunglasses. 2. Color shut down – This is like old maid with glow sticks. Purchase several glow sticks and paint the bottom of one of them black. The kids will hold the glow sticks in their hands and try to make color matches by picking sticks from other players without getting the “old maid” painted bottom. 3. Glow in the Dark balloon volleyball – Cut the end off a glow stick and pour the contents in a latex air filled balloon. Tie off and have the kids try to keep the balloon from hitting the ground.

Craft:

Make glow in the dark play dough or bubbles. Both are made simply by adding neon non-toxic paint to your favorite DIY bubbles or play dough recipe.

Little Baker

Kids love to help in the kitchen, but these cooking projects can be made outside on the patio or inside at the kitchen table.

Activities:

1. Dirt pudding cups - Everyone loves getting dirty. Use crushed Oreos (have the kids make them with rolling pins in Ziplock bags) and layer in cups with premade chocolate pudding. Don’t forget to add the gummy worms! 2. Too pretty to eat – The guests can decorate white bread with paint brushes and food coloring. When they are done, toast in toaster or in oven and return them to the kids to spread with jellies, butter or peanut butter. 3. Play with your food – Guests can design mosaics with dried colored beans, colorful fruit pizzas or make cars or boats out of bell peppers. The fun is only limited to their imaginations.

Craft: Keep up the cooking theme by creating food in a jar recipes that the kids can take home. Go through the steps together to fill the jar with the right ingredients, in the right order. Transformers: The Last Knight

MPAA Rating: G Time: 1 hr 49 min Overall: AViolence: B Sexual Content: AProfanity: AAlcohol / Drug Use: AThe MPAA has rated Cars 3 G. Looking in the mirror and seeing a few gray hairs is never easy. For a racing car who’s used to being the leader of the pack, getting old takes on a whole new meaning. It’s not that Lightening McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is slowing down. The problem is the young new cars are speeding up. For a racing car who’s used to being the leader of the pack, getting old takes on a whole new meaning. Cars 3 is an insightful look at how the finish line that we thought we were headed toward can sometimes change. With a G-rating, there is very little to discourage parents from sharing this movie with their children. McQueen’s crash and his accidental entry into a demolition derby are two moments when the youngest of children may be frightened. Otherwise kids and adults will enjoy plot elements that teach of the importance of having a positive outlook while continuing to move forward and accepting new challenges, even if the road doesn’t lead to where we originally thought we were going.

In a summer movie schedule already packed with sequels, the Transformers are back for their fifth round of colossal clashes. However casual followers of the film may still have a hard time distinguishing who’s good and bad—especially when one of the good guys goes rogue. Like E.T., Optimus Prime (voice by Peter Cullen) wants to go home. But when he does, he finds a dying planet, one he is responsible for destroying. Using electrified handcuffs to get Prime’s attention, the Creator charges him with finding an ancient artifact hidden below Earth’s surface. The long lost object will restore the alien homeworld. Hardcore fans of the franchise may relish the action, the explosions, the decapitations and the smack talk. But for the rest of us, it all feels a little long and loud and labored after 90 minutes. However, if you’ve bought into these toys turned film stars, don’t let the title Transformers: The Last Knight fool you. The movie’s conclusion hints this won’t be the final battle between the Autobots and Decepticons.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie

MPAA Rating: PG-13 Time: 1 hr 56 min Overall: B+ Violence: C Sexual Content: C+ Profanity: CAlcohol / Drug Use: C The MPAA has rated Megan Leavey PG-13 for war violence, language, suggestive material, and thematic elements. When Megan Leavey (Kate Mara) joined the US Marines it wasn’t because she really wanted to serve her country. It was because she really wanted to get away from her dysfunctional family life and hopeless depression that included alcohol and substance abuse. Consequently, she is not the most dedicated cadet at boot camp. But that changes when she is caught drunk and acting disorderly after a night of heavy partying. For punishment, she is sent to clean out kennels at the base’s K9 training center. While the movie focuses mostly on the relationship between the woman and the dog, there are also a few scenes dedicated to a love interest for Megan (played by Ramon Rodriguez). However, a greater portion of the film’s runtime depicts the Marine and canine’s active service as they take on the dangerous task of detecting bombs, finding weapons, and facing enemy fire. Like most dog lover’s tales, this story stresses the interconnection that can happen between animals and humans. Eastern Shore Parents I July 2017

MPAA Rating: PG Time: 1 hr 29 min Overall: B Violence: BSexual Content: B+ Profanity: AAlcohol / Drug Use: A The MPAA has rated Captain Underpants for mild rude humor. George and Herold (voices of Kevin Hart and Thomas Middleditch) are elementary-aged kids who have been friends since kindergarten. Sharing the same sense of humor, the pals combine their separate talents for writing and art, to make hand-drawn adventure stories featuring a bald action figure in tighty-whities. The pair also likes to play pranks on their teachers as a way to cheer up their fellow students at their penitentiary-like school. As is to be expected from the film’s title, this script is full, of potty humor. Perhaps more of a surprise will be the violence that erupts between the boys and the vengeful Professor. While all the depictions are too ridiculous to be taken seriously, they may still be a bit frightening for young viewers. The story does allow its characters to reconsider their motives, feel remorse for their mockery, and redeem their actions. While these positive moments won’t flush away all the shenanigans, they will likely provide enough charm to amuse older children and tweens. 96
