Are you Team Boo-Hoo or Team Yahoo when it comes to back-to-school season? I am 100% Team Boo-Hoo when the school supplies start filling the store aisles and those first-day countdowns begin. I love the slower pace of summer and the freedom of go-with-the-flow days. But after that first day of school? I have to admit, I acclimate pretty quickly. As much as I cherish summer, I think we can all agree there are moments that can be—dare I say it—a little more challenging!

Now that we’ve officially made it through another summer break, Rebecca Hastings helps us celebrate with a humorous feature that felt like the perfect way to wrap up the season. Congratulations! You’ve Made It to August—Your Parenting Survival Award Is in the Mail is a lighthearted look back at some of the funniest and most relatable moments of summer parenting. I have a feeling you’ll see yourself somewhere in its pages.

One of my family’s favorite back-to-school traditions has always been signing up for after-school activities. With three children whose interests varied, I have always been grateful for the incredible variety of opportunities available in our community. Whether your child is interested in team sports, performing arts, scouting, fine arts, STEM, martial arts, or individual sports, our annual After School Activities Guide is a great place to begin your search.

Of course, choosing an activity isn’t just about filling time on the calendar. Sometimes the best after-school experience is one that builds confidence, encourages friendships, and gives a child a place where they truly belong. That’s why I encourage you to read Shannon Dean’s thoughtful feature, “More Than a Place to Go: How to Choose the After-School Program That Feels Right.” Her article offers practical advice for looking beyond convenience and finding programs that fit your child’s unique personality, interests, and needs.

As parents, we also know that teachers play an incredible role in helping our children succeed. Long before students arrive, teachers have already spent countless hours preparing classrooms and creating welcoming spaces where learning can flourish. Rebecca Hastings shares wonderful ideas in “Start Strong: Fun Ways to Celebrate Teachers at the Beginning of the Year.” It’s filled with simple, meaningful ways families can show appreciation and begin building positive relationships with the educators who will have such an important impact on our children’s lives.

The rising cost of living has made back-to-school shopping more difficult for many families. If you’re able to purchase a few extra school supplies or donate clothing to your school’s clothes closet, I encourage you to do so. Even a small act of generosity can make a big difference. The Superpower of Communicate-First

My son is a full-grown, responsible, kind, and capable adult. However, he recently reminded me that effective communication is a skill that requires continuous cultivation. We were on a family road trip when he suddenly threw the car in park and sprinted into the woods. He did not think to say, “Hey, guys, I’m feeling carsick.” Instead, he was a blur of panic disappearing into the trees while the rest of us screamed his name like we were filming a dramatic rescue scene.

Later, when I stopped laughing and my heart rate returned to normal, I thought, “This is exactly why we must prioritize teaching children to communicate effectively. To limit confusion and frustration.”

Children are not born knowing how to pause, check in, or ask questions. Infants learn this through simple connection cues like checking your face before exploring. Toddlers begin practicing early communication scripts, such as “Mama, look!” or “Can I?”, before they climb or grab. Preschoolers can learn permission routines that help

them pause and check in before acting, especially during play or transitions. Schoolage children refine these skills into self-regulation habits that include asking questions, seeking clarification, and communicating needs before acting.

At every stage, the goal is the same: children learn to pause, communicate, and connect before they act. This does not develop naturally; it is a skill that must be taught to them through consistent practice. Teaching children to communicate before acting does not have to be rigid or serious. In fact, the more playful it is, the better it sticks. Here are some simple ways to teach permission seeking.

• Ask Before You Build- When using blocks or Legos, have the child ask permission before adding a piece to a shared structure. This is perfect for preschoolers learning cooperative play.

• Ask to Join- During playtime, model asking, “Can I play with you?” before joining a game, sharing an idea, or taking a toy.

• Family Permission Phrase- Give older kids a predictable, non-cringey way to pause and check in before acting. This will teach them the adult skill of communicating first, instead of assuming permission. Having a little phrase also helps spouses who are struggling to communicate well.

When your children do ask, celebrate as if they just won the Nobel Prize for Communication, because what we give attention to grows. These tiny habits become the lifelong tools that prevent confusion over simple things like sprinting into the woods on a family road trip.

What I really want parents to understand is that expecting your children to ask permission is not about control. It is about helping your child build the skills required for healthy relationships. When children first learn to say “Can I...?”, they have the vital building blocks for strong friendships, healthy family dynamics, appropriate school behavior, and future workplace success. Helping your children master permission seeking is a tiny act with enormous relational dividends! Your goal is to help them become thoughtful, connected humans who do not accidentally terrify their family on a road trip.

Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation Launches Baldwin County Youth Caregiver & Community Needs Assessment

The Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation has officially launched the Baldwin County Youth Caregiver & Community Needs Assessment. The purpose of this comprehensive survey is to better understand the mental wellness education needs and priorities of families and community members across Baldwin County. As we desire to meet the current needs of our community members through educational programs we first need to hear from you.

Information gathered through this assessment will directly shape future educational programs, workshops, and community events offered throughout the area. By participating, community members will help identify the topics of greatest interest—such as anxiety, bullying, social media safety, and substance use awareness—as well as preferred learning formats and potential barriers to participation.

The Foundation is calling on all adults who support or interact with youth to participate. To ensure open and honest feedback, all responses to the survey are completely anonymous and confidential. ESRT Auditions for Disney’s High School Musical, JR.

Auditions for Eastern Shore Repertory Theatre’s Fall 2026 production of Disney’s High School Musical JR will be held August 10 and 11 from 6:00–8:00 PM at the Nicholson Center in Daphne. Auditions are open to students in 5th through 12th grade. No experience is necessary. Students should prepare a 1–2 minute song in the style of High School Musical JR and bring an accompaniment track. All students must complete the online audition form before auditions. Mobile Museum of Art Awarded Grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama for Free Thursday Admission

On June 15, 2026, Mobile Museum of Art (MMoA) received a grant from The Caring Foundation of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama to offer free general admission to all Alabama residents every Thursday from July 1, 2026, through August 31, 2026.

“Last year’s summer access program propelled us to record-breaking attendance,” MMoA Executive Director Jon Carfagno said. “With admissions that are outpacing our previous heights, we are so excited that the upward trend is continuing. This generous gift from The Caring Foundation will allow our team to extend the reach of our very popular current exhibitions Louise Nevelson: Dawn to Dusk and Aminah Robinson: Journeys Home, A Visual Memoir, as well as our recently re-imagined For Children gallery.”

For more than ten years, MMoA has offered free general admission on Thursdays for Mobile County residents only. With the help of The Caring Foundation of Blue Cross, the Free Thursday program will now offer residents of the state of Alabama waived general admission fees to the Museum on Thursdays.

This announcement follows on the heels of other initiatives MMoA has offered this summer to expand its commitment to fostering greater community access.

• Free Thursdays, supported by the Mobile County Commission, allow Mobile County residents free entry every Thursday.

• Through Museums for All, individuals receiving SNAP benefits and up to four guests can enter for free.

• The Blue Star Museums program, running from May 16 to September 5, 2026, provides free admission to active-duty military, veterans, and up to four guests.

• Additionally, from May 1 to September 5, 2026, MMoA offers free summer admission to teachers and first responders, who can also bring up to four guests.

Jennifer Childress

Robertsdale Elementary School

After spending 15 years in the IT and healthcare industries, Jennifer Childress made the lifechanging decision to pursue a new path in education. Inspired by her own young children, she took time to reflect on what mattered most and realized she wanted a career that would allow her to make a difference in the lives of students while being more present for her family. That journey led her to earn her teaching certification through the TeacherReady Program at the University of West Florida.

Now, Jennifer is preparing to begin her second year as a fifth-grade science teacher at Robertsdale Elementary School, where she is passionate about inspiring curiosity and a love of learning in her students.

“There is no such thing as a typical day in a science class,” Mrs. Childress explained. “One day might involve digging in the dirt, another day might consist of making a pitcher of Kool-Aid and a bowl of trail mix as we learn about mixtures and solutions, and some days you can catch us flying paper airplanes down the hallway.”

Hands-on learning takes priority in her classroom, right alongside creating meaningful lessons that lead to lifelong understanding.

“I try to tie every lesson to something meaningful and useful for my students,” she shared. “After a lesson on chemical reactions, my heart swelled with pride when the kids showed me their apples at lunch and talked about how the browning was the result of a chemical reaction.”

The most challenging part of teaching so far, she says, has been seeing students struggle to have their basic needs met outside the classroom. Keeping snacks, basic hygiene items, and a listening ear available has helped tremendously.

“I am so thankful for the resources we have in Baldwin County and at our schools. Whenever I have needed help meeting a child’s basic needs, the school and community have stepped in to make it happen!”

When she isn’t balancing the demands of teaching and family life, Mrs. Childress enjoys spending time with her husband of 15 years and their three children: a seven-year-old and fiveyear-old twins. They love hiking and exploring, especially in the Smoky Mountains. She also enjoys crafting and volunteering at her church.

Fairhope High Senior Wins Division!

Big congrats to our upcoming Fairhope High School senior Samuel Friedman for winning the 16–18 division of the John Racciatti Junior Golf Classic at Lakewood with a -4 68!! We had quite a few boys competing in this event who represented our program well, including Abel Hastings who was our best finisher in the 13-15 division with a T-14 finish. Great win Samuel, keep grinding boys, and Go Pirates!

Foley Sister Cities Student Delegates

Return from Hennef, Germany

The Foley Sister Cities Board of Commissioners is pleased to announce that we were able to send the second group of Foley High School student and teacher delegates to their partner city of Hennef, Germany. Students returned home last week after experiencing a two-week exchange. The first delegation traveled in 2024 and are now active members of the Foley Sister Cities Global Leaders Alumni Association.

The Foley High School teachers and students stayed with host families while visiting the cities of Cologne and Bonn, Germany, and Efteling and Maastricht, Netherlands. Students and teachers experienced the culture of the area by attending school, enjoying family time with their host families, and by visiting the surrounding area castles, cathedrals, Lindt Chocolate Factory and Museum, Efteling Amusement Park, and the Haribo Gummy Bear Store. They also visited the Drei-Lander-Eck (“three-border-area”), a place where the countries of Belgium, Netherlands and Germany connect, along with several other outings. All delegates agreed that there was an unbelievable warm reception from the Hennef families and citizens. Many stated they have built relationships for a lifetime. Students described this trip as a life-changing experience, and they have gained a lifetime of connections.

Bayside Academy Names Janna Corley Head of Lower School

Bayside Academy has named Janna Corley as Head of Lower School. Throughout the search process, Mrs. Corley distinguished herself not only through her impressive experience and accomplishments, but the remarkable consistency between who she is as an educator and the values that define Bayside Academy. Mrs. Corley spent more than a decade at UMS-Wright prior to becoming an elementary school assistant principal while continuing to teach graduate courses in instructional design and technology at the University of Mobile. We are excited for her to join the Bayside family and lead our Lower School into its next chapter.

Welcome, Mrs. Corley! We can’t wait to see all that’s ahead for our Lower School community.

Nature Connect Staff Summer Training

The Nature Connect staff underwent several days of camp training, covering curriculum development, behavior support, emergency procedures, first aid and CPR, site hazard identification, and outdoor skills. They reviewed safety protocols, participated in scenario-based roleplay, and practiced teamwork. Beyond technical training, staff engaged in nature exploration, team-building games, and storytelling to strengthen their connection to the outdoors. We are grateful to our educators, counselors, and assistants for ensuring a safe, enjoyable summer focused on a meaningful camp season. We hope to see you this summer!

BCS Students NextGen Program

Congratulations to Bayshore Christian School seniors Blake Strickland and Libby Mayo on successfully completing the 2026 NextGen Docs Summer Program at Thomas Hospital. Spanish Fort High Student Wins First at NSLC

SFHS student Cole Coumanis recently attended the National Student Leadership Conference in Washington DC, where he learned how to serve and be a leader in his community. In addition to learning, he and two fellow students won first place award for presenting issues that impact the country. With winning first place, the NSLC donated $1,000 to a charity of their choosing — Sasha Bruce Youthwork.

Campers enjoyed an exciting field trip to the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park, where they explored the historic battleship, learned about its rich military history, and experienced a memorable day of hands-on discovery.

J. On Sunday, June 28, our church and school community gathered for the consecration of our new building. It was a beautiful, spirit-filled service, and we were grateful to celebrate alongside our church and school families and dedicated staff. What a blessing to mark this milestone together!

St. Michael Students Participate in State Games

Rising junior Declan Reidy and senior Cam Kerbl recently participated in the Prep Baseball Report Alabama State Games, a prestigious invite-only event that brings together some of the state’s top underclass baseball talent. The two-day showcase serves as an important opportunity for high school players to demonstrate their skills in front of college recruiters and professional scouts while competing alongside some of Alabama’s best athletes. The event is considered a key evaluation stop in the long-term development and recruiting process for players across the state.

Belforest Elementary Librarian Goes to Space Camp

Learning at Belforest never ends, especially for teachers during the summer. Mrs Mabire, our librarian, had the chance to participate in a week-long adventure at space camp in Huntsville, Alabama for educators. Mrs. Mabire was immersed in technology, aviation, problem solving, collaboration, innovation, and engineering. Mrs. Mabire enjoyed getting a chance to train like a real astronaut and getting a chance to learn more about astronomy, rocketry, propulsion and future missions to the Moon and Mars.

Bayshore Student Explores Veterinary Medicine at Auburn

Bayshore Christian School congratulates Jayden Thomas on attending Auburn University’s Youth Programs Veterinary Camp. During the week-long program, Jayden gained hands-on experience in veterinary medicine while working alongside Auburn professors, veterinary students, and instructors. He developed a variety of clinical skills while caring for both large and small animals. The experience provided valuable insight into the veterinary profession and strengthened Jayden’s interest in pursuing a future in animal care. St. Michael Gets a Special Visit

These three sisters traveled all the way from Ann Arbor, Michigan, home of the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, while serving at Vacation Bible School at St. Lawrence Parish. During their time on the Eastern Shore, they stopped by St. Michael for a campus tour. The Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist are known for their commitment to education, prayer, evangelization, and community outreach. It was a joy to welcome them to campus and share a little of what makes St. Michael so special.

The Alabama PALS Clean Campus Program helps schools educate students about litter prevention while encouraging hands-on involvement in campus and community cleanup efforts. Designed as a springboard for environmental education, the program makes it easy to incorporate litter awareness and stewardship into classrooms across Alabama. When was the last time you thanked a teacher? So often we go about life, grateful for their hard work but never really stop to thank them for the difference they make in our lives. From teaching kids to read and navigate numbers to how to work in a group and practice good manners, teachers dedicate their lives to helping you raise your children.

Teachers educate, comfort, listen, and even protect kids every day. While every day is a good opportunity to say thank you, start the year strong by showing how much you value the educators in your child’s life. If you work with other parents from the class or the school you can do something really special.

Here are some fun and meaningful ways to celebrate the teachers in your child’s life!

Lend a Hand

Teachers are masters of multitasking. With so much on their plate, you can show appreciation by lending a hand. Offer to do things like make copies or organize the classroom library. Come in one afternoon and redecorate their seasonal bulletin board or organize and refresh their supplies. Practical help goes a long way toward making a teacher feel appreciated.

Set Up a Snack Table

Break periods and lunchtime often get filled with meetings, helping students, or other work. Teachers can easily have a nourishing and tasty snack by creating a grab-and-go snack table. Ask parents to donate packaged snacks and drinks that teachers can take on the run. Great ideas are Kind bars, fancy seltzers, candy, and smoothies.

Get Gifts They Actually Want

their favorite things. Great ideas include favorite candy, colors, restaurants, coffee orders, and authors. Use this information to get teachers things you know they will love for upcoming holidays and celebrations (or just because!)

Make Them School Year Ready

As the year starts teachers are focused on making things great for every child that walks through their door. Help them make this possible by contributing things they need for the classroom. You can also go the extra mile and give them things that make their year easier and more fun like new desk supplies, a fun calendar, a travel mug, or a stash of candy to keep in their drawer for the days they need it most.

Give Them Dinner to Go

Teachers spend all day caring for and teaching kids, and many of them are tired at the end of the day. Give them a break by making dinners they can take home when they leave. Parents and

#3 Fancy Coffee Day: Perfect for morning or a midday pick-me-up, set up a table where teachers can get fun coffee creations that are sure to beat the coffee in the teacher’s lounge.

#4 New Supplies Day: Collect classroom supplies, teaching supplies, stationery, tissues, and other things teachers use in the classroom. Invite teachers to come to pick a few things to refresh their classroom.

#5 Relaxation Day: Turn the teacher’s lounge into a relaxing oasis with calm music, cucumber water, and spa kits with lotion and face masks to take home. Get a massage therapist to give mini-massages for a special treat.

#6 Flower Day: Bring each teacher fresh-cut flowers or small potted plants. It’s fun to bring this during class so kids can see how nice it is to celebrate their teacher.

#7 Ice Cream Day: Set up a sundaemaking station with all the fixings and make sure each teacher gets coverage to come to enjoy a sweet treat.

Contentment, Gratitude and Priorities

Q. My husband loves his job, works a regular schedule and he makes over $180,000 a year. I love my work as a parttime substitute teacher in our local school system. We are debt-free, except for our home, and we’ve already invested and saved enough money to where we’ll have a very comfortable retirement in a few years. My husband asked me the other day how I’d feel about finding a full-time job, so we can build more wealth. I don’t really want to do this, but I wondered about your thoughts on our situation.

A. You two have a responsibility to take care of each other and your own household, first and foremost. You didn’t give me many numbers to go on, but from what you’ve told me it sounds like you’re doing a really good job of that. Congratulations!

But to be honest, I’m not a big fan of the idea of you taking on a full-time job only to build more wealth—especially if you guys are in great shape financially, and you love what you’re already doing. Sure, having a bunch of wealth allows you to do things you wouldn’t otherwise be able to do. It can also help ensure a good, stable quality of life and put you in a position to be extremely generous. But if you have to surrender the joy in life to do it, all in the name of simply increasing your amount of wealth to an even higher level, I don’t like that idea.

I want you to think about something. Contentment has nothing to do with how many hours you work, or how

many zeroes are in your bank account. Contentment has to do with your state of being. It’s connected to your happiness, your sense of gratitude and your priorities. The idea that contentment is on the same spectrum as ambition? I disagree with that notion wholeheartedly. People should do something with their lives that they feel called to do and enjoy. Now, if your kids are going hungry, and your bills aren’t getting paid, you need to put your head down and do what it takes to get on the right path. But in my mind, you guys are in a great place!

As summer winds down and school ramps back up, families face a familiar list of decisions. One of the most important? Where will your child go when the school day ends, but your workday hasn’t?

Whether you’re juggling long hours at the office, hoping to extend your child’s learning, or just trying to keep them engaged and happy until dinner, choosing the right after-school program can feel like one more high-stakes choice in a never-ending parenting marathon.

But here’s the good news: with a little practical research, some honest reflection, and a gut-check or two, you can find a program that supports not just your calendar, but your child’s temperament, energy, and growth.

Know That There Are Benefits to After-School Enrichment

Some parents wrestle with guilt about sending their child to an after-school program, especially if it feels like “extra” time away from home. But research suggests that high-quality after-school programs are far more than glorified babysitting.

One study published in Developmental Psychology found that elementary-aged children who participated in structured after-school activities had stronger work

habits and better emotional adjustment than peers who didn’t.

Another, published in The American Journal of Community Psychology, revealed that middle school students enrolled in after-school programs earned better math scores and also displayed stronger developmental skills, including leadership and social confidence.

Done well, afterschool programs can enhance a child’s development, not hinder it.

Start With Your Child, Not the Brochure

Questions to Ask Yourself When Choosing an After-School Program:

Does it align with my child’s temperament and preferences?

Are staff warm, consistent, and well-trained?

Is the environment safe and welcoming?

Is there good balance between structure and choice?

Can I afford it and manage the logistics long-term?

Did my child enjoy the visit?

Do I feel at peace leaving them there?

Before you’re dazzled by glossy flyers and promises of enrichment, start with a simple question: What does your child need after school?

Developmental psychologist Dr. Deborah Lowe Vandell puts it this way: “It’s a complicated question about what works best. Afterschool environments need to be evaluated in the context of the individual child’s needs and within the family.”

So: What lights them up? What wears them down? Are they the kind of kid who craves structured activities, or do they need space to breathe after a long, socially demanding day?

If your child is introverted or easily overstimulated, a five-day sports camp might leave them drained. On the other hand, if they thrive on movement and social energy, sitting in a tutoring center could feel like detention.

Listen to your child’s feedback, even if they don’t say much. If they come home from a trial day cranky, quiet, or withdrawn, something’s not clicking. Trust what you’re seeing.

The best after-school programs don’t just pass the time. They use it meaningfully.

The Three Cs: Connection, Capability, and Continuity

When evaluating a program, some experts suggest considering three crucial qualities: connection, capability, and continuity.

Connection: Are staff warm, present, and genuinely interested in the kids? Do they get down on eye level and know kids by name? A program that’s merely supervised may not be enough.

Capability: Are staff trained in education, child development, and conflict resolution? Can they guide behavior with empathy rather than just enforce rules?

Continuity: Children thrive on predictability. Ask about staff turnover, what happens when someone’s out sick, and whether there’s a reliable daily rhythm. If your child sees a new adult every week,

they may not form the connections they need to feel secure.

Logistics Matter, But Shouldn’t Be the Deciding Factor

Yes, a program has to fit your sched ule. And it should ideally be affordable and not halfway across town. But don’t let convenience be the only deciding factor.

Admittedly, transportation can be a deal-breaker. Some programs offer it. Some don’t. Ask detailed questions: What time is pickup? What happens if you’re late? My neighbor had to step back from a seemingly perfect program after learning parents were expected to pick up by 5:00 sharp, while her workday sometimes ended at 5:30.

Observe and Involve Your Child

If a program seems like a contender, ask to observe. Even better, bring your child and let them explore. Kids are intuitive, and their body language is often a tell. Watch how staff interact with the chil dren. Are kids engaged or zoned out on screens? Is there laughter, creativity, and movement? Or is the vibe more chaotic and crowded?

Are there activity options, or is every one lumped into one rotation? What’s the noise level? Does it feel joyful and energetic? Or loud and overstimulating?

Watch for Red Flags

Even highly rated programs may not suit your child. But some red flags are universal, such as high staff turnover, low adult-to-child ratios, no consistent structure, excessive screen use, or a rigid culture focused on compliance instead of curiosity.

And if a program won’t let you observe or dodges questions about staffing and policies? That’s a red flag in itself.

Trust the Long Game

No program is perfect. But when the fit is right, you’ll see it: the glitter, the grass stains, the proud art project clutched in small hands. The “guess what happened today!” stories that tumble out during the ride home.

And you’ll know your child is not just being cared for, but known, engaged, and supported.

Behind the Screens: What Your Child Cannot Tell You... And Why It Changes Everything

There is something happening in the lives of our children that most of us are only seeing the edges of.

We see the phone. We see the attitude. We see the grades slipping and the friendships shifting and the child who used to talk to us now staring at a screen in silence. We set limits. We take the phone away. We have the conversation for the third time this month. And still, something feels off. Just out of reach. Just beyond what we can see.

I had the wonderful opportunity to present Behind the Screens at a recent educators conference. There is so much happening that parents and educators are simply not aware of unless you happen to be really diving into this stuff. A lot. And who has time for that? But I do believe understanding what is happening behind the screens helps us to better understand our youth. I have spent over a decade working with students, families, and schools across the country on digital safety, social media, and the rapidly changing world our children are growing up in. And the single most important thing I can tell you is this: what you are seeing on the surface is not the whole story. Not even close.

The algorithms powering the platforms your child uses every day are not neutral. They are engineered by behavioral scientists specifically to capture attention and hold it… learning what emotionally triggers your child, what keeps them scrolling, and what brings them back. Make no mistake, it IS a business model. And it is working on our kids in ways most of us were never told to look for.

Millions of teenagers today are turning to AI companion apps. Platforms where they can interact with artificial characters that are always patient, always available, and never say the wrong thing. Not for entertainment. But for emotional support. For companionship. In many documented cases, for simulated relationships.

There is a very real developmental problem with that. Real relationships are built through friction. A friend who lets you down but shows up anyway, a conflict that gets resolved, a moment that requires something hard from both people. Those experiences are not comfortable. But they are how children develop the emotional and relational skills they will need for the rest of their lives.

The World Behind the Screen

Today’s children are growing up in a digital ecosystem unlike anything any previous generation has ever experienced. Social media and artificial intelligence are no longer separate conversations. They are deeply connected parts of the same system, and together they are quietly reshaping how our children think, feel, connect, and see themselves.

An AI companion never ruptures. It never disappoints. And a developing brain that calibrates to that standard can start to find real human relationships…including the ones with parents and educators… start to feel like too much work by comparison.

The Threat We Are Not Talking About Enough

Then deepfakes get inserted into all of this mess. Deepfakes are AI-generated images and videos that place a real person’s face onto fabricated content. These are already showing up in schools across the country. A national survey of K-12 prin-

cipals found that one in five high schools has already dealt with a deepfake-related incident. The average age of victims in school-based cases is twelve to fourteen years old. Babies. These are young kids that should never have to sit in this space. It is adult. And terrifying. And exhausting. And a fire to their system.

What We Do About It

All of this can feel like a losing game. But it isn’t. One thing I have learned after over a decade of doing this work is that informed parents can protect their kids. And the most powerful thing any of us can do is close the gap between what we think our children are experiencing online and what they are actually navigating every day. Talk to your child. Do not start with a lecture, but with genuine curiosity. Ask them what they are seeing. Make your home a place where hard things can be said out loud without fear of punishment or blame.

Understand you are not in this alone. Schools, counselors, coaches, and community leaders all have a role to play. This is not a problem any one of us can solve in isolation. I believe that it requires all of us to be informed, connected, and moving in the same direction. The world our children are growing up in is more complex than anything we faced. But awareness… well, this is where everything starts to change.

The Sunscreen Struggle – It starts with figuring out what sunscreen to even purchase. Spray? Mineral? SPF? Who even knows?! And applying sunscreen? Well, we all know that applying sunscreen to a child is like wrestling a greased-up octopus that also happens to scream. And yet, despite your best efforts, there’s always one streak of sunburn.

The Pool Towel Debacle – Where is that smell coming from? You’ve washed, dried, and folded approximately 4,279 towels, only for them to end up in a damp, smelly heap within an hour. The faint odor of mildew will linger long after summer ends.

The Snack Wars – We all need snacks. But something about summer brings out the snack monster in everyone (even us!) You bought enough snacks to feed a small village, yet somehow, there’s “nothing good to eat.” Plus, you’ve resorted to eating the bag of crushed animal crackers at the bottom of the swim bag.

The Car Smells Situation – At some point, you just had to accept that your car would smell like wet swimsuits, smashed Goldfish crackers, and possibly something that was once dairybased but has evolved into a new species. Should you clean the car out or just get a new one? It’s a toss-up.

The Bedtime Negotiations – Remember when bedtime was a thing? Neither do your kids. It now takes multiple reminders, bribes, and threats of “no screen time tomorrow” to get them to sleep before midnight.

A Week-by-Week Breakdown of Your Sanity

Week One: “This summer is going to be magical!”

Week Two: “It’s going ok. This isn’t so bad.”

Week Three: “Okay, this is a lot of togetherness.”

Week Four: “I love my kids. I love my kids. I love my kids.”

Week Five: “We are out of money, patience, and the will to entertain these people.”

Week Six: “I’m just going to check and see when the first day is so we’re ready.”

Week Seven: “Dinner? Ummm...who wants ice cream?”

Week Eight: “School starts soon. I think I’ll miss them. Maybe.”

Week Nine: “Wait, did we do enough fun things? Should we take a last-minute trip?!”

Week Ten: “Nope. We are officially out of energy. Someone hand me the back-to-school supply list and a giant coffee.”

Sure, August is still summer, but it’s late summer. The light at the end of the tunnel is glowing (or maybe that’s just the reflection from your kid’s iPad that you swore they wouldn’t use so much). Either way, you’ve made it. And that deserves a trophy. Or at the very least, a giant iced coffee and five uninterrupted minutes to scroll your phone in peace.

ESP: How has your career journey shaped the way you support your own daughters?

MB: When it comes to school, all I ask is that my girls work hard and do their best. They’re not going to be great at every subject, and that’s okay. I just want them to put in the effort, ask questions when they don’t understand something, and know they can always come to me for help. Because of my background in education, I’ve learned a lot of strategies that help kids learn in different ways. If I see one of those strategies might help one of my girls, I try to pass it along and support them however I can.

ESP: With one daughter finishing elementary school and the other beginning high school, what emotions are you feeling as your family enters this new season?

MB: As my oldest starts high school, I’m excited for all the new opportunities ahead of her, the new friendships she’ll build, and the relationships she’ll continue to grow. At the same time, I’m nervous about the increased academic expectations and helping her find a healthy balance between homework, studying, extracurricular activities, and spending time with friends.

As my youngest begins her final year of elementary school, I’m excited for the experiences that will prepare her for middle school and beyond. I’m looking forward to watching her continue building friendships, making new ones, and stepping into a leadership role as one of the oldest students on campus. I also know this is our last year in a place filled with teachers and staff who have loved her, encouraged her, and helped shape the young lady she is becoming, and that makes this season a little bittersweet.

ESP: Your girls have danced for over a decade. What life lessons have you seen dance teach them beyond the stage?

MB: We love our studio and are so thankful for everything the teachers pour into our girls and every dancer who walks through their doors. Dance has taught my daughters to set goals, work hard, and develop the discipline needed to achieve them.

It has also given our entire family lifelong friendships. I’ve watched my girls build relationships where they genuinely celebrate each other’s successes and comfort one another when things don’t go as planned. We’ve been on the receiving end of that encouragement ourselves. Watching a child pause their own celebration to hug a friend or offer words of encouragement is something truly special, and those moments have been just as meaningful as anything they’ve accomplished on stage.

ESP: What helps you stay grounded and maintain balance?

MB: I’ve always been a very independent person, but over the years I’ve learned that it’s okay to ask for help. I’ve also learned that I need structure and routine to keep everything moving.

I rely on my daily planner to keep up with our schedules and responsibilities, and I’m fortunate to have a husband who is quick to jump in and help—sometimes before I even have to ask.

One tradition we’ve always tried to protect is eating dinner together as a family. The time may change depending on everyone’s schedules, and sometimes some of us are finishing while others are just sitting down because of late classes or meetings, but we make it a priority to gather around the table together at least four nights each week.

ESP: What is one parenting lesson you’ve learned over the years that you wish every new mom could hear?

MB: Always listen—even when it’s hard to hear. I’ve always tried to let my daughters tell me about a situation before I offer my thoughts or advice. I’ve learned that when you listen to the little things and help them work through those moments, they’re much more likely to come to you with the bigger, more important ones later.

We live in a world that can be scary, unkind, and challenging. It’s my job to help my girls navigate those situations in ways that are smart, kind, and rooted in their faith.

ESP: Looking ahead, what hopes or prayers do you have for your daughters as they begin this exciting new school year?

MB: My biggest prayer for both of my girls is that they always remember WHO they are and WHOSE they are. Eleven and fourteen can be difficult ages, and kids can sometimes be unkind. I hope they continue working to be the kind of friend others can depend on because those friendships will carry them through both the good times and the hard ones.

I also pray they continue to work hard in the classroom. Education is important, and the lessons they learn now will continue to shape their future and their academic journey for years to come.

Megan Bias is a psychometrist for Mobile County Public Schools, where she helps identify students for gifted and special education programs. She and her husband, Brandon, of 18 years have called the Eastern Shore home for the past 11 years and love raising their two daughters — Emily Ann (14) and Amelia (11) — in the area. Both girls are very involved with dance and when time allows the family loves beach days, weekends at Lake Martin, and being active in their community.
