KEEP AN EYE THE RECORDS IN CONCERT THE RECORDS is an initiative of the Keep an Eye Foundation: a prize that allows three promising jazz bands to record their own music. They each receive a fully financed CD production worth € 10,000. During The Records in Concert, the winners of 2023 will present their brand new album. In addition, the three winners of 2024 will be announced. They were selected by an independent jury from a total of 115 entries from various Dutch Conservatories. They then have one year to realize their album. Since four years The Records in Concert has been expanded with The Records on Tour! Through this new collaboration between Keep an Eye and the VNJJ (Vereniging van Nederlandse Jazzpodia en Jazzfestivals), the winners who release their album this year will be invited for a concert at various renowned jazz venues.

ALBUM PRESENTATIONS WINNERS THE RECORDS 2023 DUTCH MOUNTAIN TRIBE

DUTCH MOUNTAIN TRIBE

Koen Boeijinga (alto and soprano saxophone, winds) ■ Giuseppe Doronzo (baritone saxophone, bass clarinet, winds) ■ Lucas Kloosterboer (trombone, percussion, guitar) ■ Mees Siderius (drums, percussion) Esat Ekincioglu (double bass) ■ Pau Sola Masafrets (cello) ■ Mary Oliver (altviool, viola, hardanger fiddle)

The seven-piece Dutch Mountain Tribe sits in a horseshoe-shaped set-up, led by woodwind player and composer Koen Boeijnga. This collective embraces both young pioneers and seasoned virtuosos from the Dutch improvisation scene. They unite their diverse backgrounds (Netherlands, Italy, Turkey, Spain and the US) in a fabric of idiosyncratic melodies, intoxicating rhythms and fiery improvisations. Their music evokes folk songs from a mythical Dutch mountain landscape for healing rituals. The collective has an extensive arsenal of percussion instruments, flutes, bagpipes and other objects from Koen’s immense collection. Follow these musicians as they walk the mountain paths with bells on their ankles and let you get lost in the trance-inducing rhythms, on a journey to a different state-of-mind.

RONNY DECARLO

FONQUE NOUVEAU

Roenik Roa Espinosa (guitar) ■ Matthijs Geerts (keys, synths) ■ Misha Voeykov (electric bass) Noah Bouwman (drums, SPD)

Ronny deCarlo, the alter ego of the Colombian-Dutch guitarist Roenik Roa Espinosa, sounds like a character straight out of a Spaghetti Western. A genre that is very close to Roenik’s heart, especially because of the soundtracks by Ennio Morricone. On his album FONQUE NOUVEAU he pays tribute to this Italian film composer in the closing track ‘Turtle Island’. Ronny deCarlo’s soulful sound takes you -like in a movie- to the Canyons and the Sahara. You recognize echoes from funk, gospel, jazz and R&B, but hip-hop techniques such as samples, electronics and loops make the music completely contemporary. Carefully orchestrated arrangements and focused improvisation draw you into the story in a refined way.

ALBUM PRESENTATIONS WINNERS THE RECORDS 2023 FEDERICO CALCAGNO OCTET

MUNDUS INVERSUS

Federico Calcagno (clarinet, bass clarinet, compositions) ■ José Soares (alto saxophone) Nabou Claerhout (trombone) ■ Adrian Moncada (piano) ■ Aleksander Sever (vibraphone) Pau Sola Masafrets (cello) ■ Pedro Ivo Ferreira (double bass) ■ Nick Thessalonikefs (drums)

Italian clarinet player Federico Calcagno composes to discover a new perspective on today’s volatile world and to find new opportunities. On his album Mundus Inversus, the existing social hierarchy is reversed and seemingly impossible things become possible. His music is inspired by this concept, especially by the bizarre creations of the artist Hieronymus Bosch and the idea of the “Hanged Man” from the tarot, which allows an upside-down view of the world. In his contemporary compositions there is plenty of room for his octet to improvise. The acoustic instrumental music can vary from whisper-soft passages to powerful outbursts. Contradictory elements such as thematic melodies, irregular rhythms, complex textures, triads and abstract harmonies find their place harmoniously in his music.

CORRIE VAN BINSBERGEN Guitarist and composer. Corrie has been active in a very wide musical range and played with numerous different bands and groups, in pop, jazz and improvised music, music for theater and dance productions, recording sessions, TV-shows and even the circus. This very broad musical background can be heard in her music.

He has worked with internationally known artists like Frank McComb, Cory Henry and others. Yoran has been a drums teacher at the jazz department of the Conservatory of Amsterdam since 2020.

BERT PALINCKX Bassist and programmer. He recorded two LP’s and ten CD’s with his group Palinckx, is an organizer at Paradox and artistic director at November Music. Bart coaches various young makers and is part of juries and committees such as the DAAD in Berlin and the Componist des Vaderlands.

PRESENTER GIOVANCA Giovanca’s solo debut album ‘Subway Silence’, which she received a Golden Record for, was released in 2008. She won several prizes, including a Buma Zilveren Harp and a 3FM Serious Talent Award. She presented the music program Vrije Geluiden on television until the end of 2019. FINALISTS THE RECORDS 2024 These seven finalists were chosen out of 115 applications from nine different Dutch Conservatories! The jury consisted of saxophonist Melissa Aldana, programmer and guitarist Marzio Scholten, saxophonist Maarten Hogenhuis.

DAAN KLUWER QUARTET Daan Kluwer (saxophone) ■ Ella Zirina (guitar) ■ William Barrett (double bass) ■ Tim Hennekes (drums)

Leading the Daan Kluwer Quartet, Daan strives to tell his own musical story. His compositions provide space for the individual musical characters of his band members, resulting in a unique blend of influences. The quartet takes you on a musical journey that lets you drift away while keeping you on the edge of your seat at the same time.

VERA MORAIS & HRISTO GOLEMINOV Vera Morais (voice, text, composition) ■ Hristo Goleminov (tenor saxophone, composition)

Vera Morais and Hristo Goleminov have developed a collaborative approach to music-making based on poetry and improvisation. Their debut album “Consider the Plums” takes the poetry of the American imagist William Carlos Williams as a point of departure and unfolds in a unique musical style that is - in the words of pianist Alexander Hawkins - “parsimonious yet human and never stern”. As of 2023 they have been working on new material based exclusively on original text.

LOEK VAN DEN BERG QUINTET Loek van den Berg (saxophones) ■ Nathan Surquin (trombone) ■ Aseo Friesacher (piano and vocals) Cas Jiskoot (contrabas) ■ Willem Romers (drums)

With their Edison Awarded debut-album Wayfarer the Loek van den Berg Quintet makes storytelling, imaginative jazz music. Loek’s composing style has a lot of influences from different musical cultures and folk music, which results in a modern, melodic and melancholic sound. The strength of the band lies in the interaction between the band members, as they use a lot of improvisation during live concerts.

THE DAM JAWN Frank Groenendijk (tenor sax) ■ Martin Diaz (alto sax) ■ Joan Fort (guitar) ■ Philip Lewin (double bass)

The Dam Jawn is a band consisting of five musicians from the Amsterdam Jazz scene who met through a shared experience in the United States. They found their collective voice by composing original music inspired by the current and the historic jazz scene from the city of Philadelphia. Their debut album features legendary alto saxophonist Dick Oatts.

NAUSYQA Miguel Valente (alto saxophone) ■ Antonio Moreno Glazkov (trumpet/synths) ■ Jelle Willems (piano/synths) Antonio Todisco (electric guitar) ■ Richard Nacinelli (electric bass) ■ Pedro Nobre (drums)

NAUSYQA are in a constant search for immersive sonic worlds. Through their dreamy curiosity and storytelling, they have crafted a blend of atmospheric post-rock and fierce grooves. Inspired by the adventurous spirit of Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind’, the instrumental quintet combines the electronic with the acoustic, with soaring melodies, edgy improvisations and large soundscapes, a combination that has taken listeners on a journey with every performance.

ANAPHORA TRIO Filippo Deorsola (piano, prepared piano, objects) ■ Jonathan Ho Chin Kiat (double bass) Marco Luparia (drums, objects)

Queer pianist and composer Filippo Deorsola presents Anaphora, a piano trio that “switches and mixes several genres and rhythms in an incredibly mastered and enjoyable way” [Best of Jazz, US]. The music embodies a practice where non-European musical traditions are explored as rhythmical and timbrical spaces that can subvert, redirect and open up the trio’s interplay to unexpected grooves and surprising textures. Inviting listeners into a captivating exploration of sound.

MICHEAL MURRAY’S COLOURFIELD Micheal Murray (alto saxophone) ■ Joy Shechter (piano) ■ Omer Govreen (double bass) ■ Wouter Kühne (drums)

The aim of this project is to pursue a sound that is the culmination of major influences in my life, from music, art and poetry. This idea influences everything from the contribution of the individuals, to the compositional process, always trying to maintain a focus on the universal communal values of music that I hold in the highest regard.
