KEEP AN EYE THE RECORDS IN CONCERT THE RECORDS is een initiatief van de Keep an Eye Foundation: een prijs waarmee drie veelbelovende jazzbands direct de studio in kunnen. Zij ontvangen ieder een volledig gefinancierde cd-productie ter waarde van € 10.000,-. Tijdens The Records in Concert presenteren de winnaars van 2020 hun gloednieuwe album. Daarnaast worden de drie winnaars van 2022 bekendgemaakt. Zij werden door een onafhankelijke jury geselecteerd uit 61 inzendingen van verschillende Nederlandse Conservatoria. Zij krijgen vervolgens een jaar de tijd om hun album te realiseren. Daarnaast is The Records in Concert sinds twee jaar uitgebreid met The Records on Tour! Door middel van deze nieuwe samenwerking tussen Keep an Eye en de VNJJ (Vereniging Nederlandse Jazzpodia en Jazzfestivals) worden de winnaars die dit jaar hun album releasen op verschillende gerenommeerde jazzpodia uitgenodigd voor een concert.

PRIJS In totaal ontvangen drie bands een bedrag van € 10.000,te besteden aan het uitbrengen van een album en de daaraan verbonden kosten. Denk onder andere aan de huur van de studio, foto’s voor de cover en het daadwerkelijke drukken van de cd. Ook ontvangen de winnaars coaching rondom de planning van het project en de PR van het album.

“In the autumn of 2020 I started composing for my septet in my attic room in Amsterdam. I had the honour of receiving a composition assignment commissioned by the Bimhuis. These compositions, complemented by some older works, resulted in the album ‘Motet’. It was a search of finding a way to put the music and the collective first and still leave space for the musicians’ individual voices at the same time. Adventurous improvisations, intimate passages and almost orchestral outbursts emerged from this search. Some of my favorite musicians, with whom I have a long lasting musical as well as personal connection, brought these compositions alive. It was recorded at Studio 150 Bethlehemkerk, a beautiful old church with original stained glass windows and astonishing acoustics that enhance the character of the music. I hope that the listener wants to step into this world of fierce grooves, melancholic melodies and uncharted improvisations with us. Many thanks to the Keep an Eye Foundation for making this all possible.”

“I Am a Gem” is Marta Arpini’s second album. This work marks the start of a new chapter in the story of her band formerly called “Forest Light”, with a new wave of compositions and a different approach to the music’s production. Collected from listening to unconventional songwriters and bands (Andy Shauf, Elliott Smith, Adrianne Lenker, Dirty Projectors, Kalbells, Rufus Wainwright, Chris Weisman), Marta intermingles her main inspirations with her jazz education, and her fascination also for instrumental music (Bill Frisell, Duke Ellington, Skúli Sverrisson, Jon Brion, Brad Mehldau, ADHD). Combining the different branches of her writing – the alternative pop and indie folk oriented songs and the jazz influenced pieces – Marta is giving her music a new garment; while the performing core of the project remains the quintet, sounds and orchestration are expanded and renovated, also thanks to an occasionally larger but flexible line-up, a dreamy “pocket orchestra”.

This is the second album of Lucas Santana 5tet. “Ambivalence is a state of having simultaneous conflicting reactions, beliefs, or feelings towards someone or something.” Bringing this concept of two opposite emotions coexisting and transforming this approach in musical expression was the biggest challenge on this album. The group explores the edges of loudness and softness, but also carries thedelicacy of a simple lyrical melody.
JURY RAMÓN VALLE Pianist. Speelde o.a. met internationale helden Roy Hargrove, Marcus Miller en Chucho Valde en Nederlands toptalent Eric Vloeimans, Jesse van Ruller, Reinier Baas, Benjamin Herman, Martin Fondse. Ramón heeft 14 albums uitgegeven bij prestigieuze platenlabels, componeerde voor diverse symfonische orkesten en ontving in 2019 een ere-award voor zijn werk als latin-jazz pianist/componist.
BEN WENDEL Saxofonist en componist. Speelde o.a. met Gerald Clayton, Eric Harland, Linda May Han Oh, Moonchild, Louis Cole, en The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. Ben ontving verschillende prestigieuze jazzawards en is op dit moment adjunct directeur van de New School in New York.
MAITE HONTELÉ Trompetist en bandleider. Na vijf albums te hebben opgenomen en de wereld rond te hebben getourd, is ze nu weer terug in de lage landen. Werkt onder andere als artistiek leider voor het Music Meeting Festival in Nijmegen.
KEN VOS Muziekjournalist voor het Leidsch Dagblad, Jazzism en Draai om je oren. Geïnteresseerd in improvisatie, jazz, wereldmuziek en hedendaagse gecomponeerde muziek. Jureerde eerder voor de Leiden Jazz Award en programmeerde o.a. voor podium Hot House Leiden en het Haagse podium De Nieuwe Slag.
MAAIKE TEUNISSEN Programmeur. Studeerde lichte muziek aan de Schumann Akademie, produceert en programmeert voor Brebl in Nijmegen en is productieleider van Festival Jazz International Nijmegen.
PRESENTATOR ANDREW MAKKINGA Andrew was nog maar 17 toen hij als goedlachse, eloquente jongen die genuanceerd zijn perspectieven over wist te brengen nogal begon op te vallen in Het (jongeren) Lagerhuis (VARA). Sindsdien heeft hij zich ontwikkeld tot een veelzijdig presentator en interviewer en werkt hij alweer 20 jaar voor (de publieke) radio en televisie. Achter de schermen is Andrew actief als lid van de Raad van Toezicht van het Fonds Podiumkunsten, naast andere bestuursfuncties die hij met name in de culturele sector vervult. Met twee programma’s op NPO Radio Soul & Jazz en als vaste host van het North Sea Jazzfestival is er i n zijn werk een hoofdrol weggelegd voor muziek!

“Adrián Moncada 6tet” is an Amsterdam based group led by Spanish pianist and composer Adrián Moncada, who invites the listeners into his musical mind with the aspiration to excite their imagination through music, combining the rhythm, improvisation, and intention of the jazz tradition with the eclecticism of Amsterdam’s melting pot.

Ambergris is a metaphor of the product of the creative process of an artist. This artist, according to the band members’ vision, is someone who has the ability to draw from a stock of experiences and emotions, roughly collected throughout life, and to create preciousness and beauty out of it. The compositions are a result of that process; they are ambergris themselves, a chaotic mass of stories in constant mutation, digested and reshaped into music. This project took shape in 2020 out of the urge of saxophone player Nicolò’ Ricci to perform his own music.

The Chai Masters strive to create jazz that stimulates the imagination. The band interprets the music of Aurel Violas and Antonio Moreno Glazkov, whose compositions are inspired by one of the most unique literary movements of the last century: Magic Realism. Like a story that blurs the line between reality and fantasy, the repertoire is a narrative where flamenco, film soundtracks and contemporary jazz intermingle. Each composition takes the Chai Masters on an unknown path, and they take the listeners with them.

The band plays the original music composed by the leader (Davor Stehlik). The music which he wrote is a specific combination of the jazz sound from the 60’s and a more modern approach of playing. The compositions have unique grooves and mostly simple but sophisticated melodies which are there not to impress but to move the listeners and take them on an exciting musical trip.

Nefertiti is a jazz quartet formed in 2012. Despite its traditional instrumentation the group explores new possibilities to take this music to new places. The colours vary from sweet singable melodies to a more contemporary texture. The improvisation can be led by any member, not having any predetermined agreements, giving freedom to the music to go wherever it needs to translate the moment.

Önder creates a fresh and rare installation of bass instruments in the context of acoustic-electronic instrumental music. Compositions go from hypnotic, labyrinthine drones to chopped-up beats and from open soundscapes to harsh avant-garde constantly on the quest for new curves in the musical lineage of jazz. Önder is the winner of the Leiden Jazz Award 2021.

RADIO TRAPANI (NL/ITA) is the alter ego of Dario Trapani, Amsterdam-based guitarist, producer and songwriter. His band blends electro/acoustic songs topped with nostalgic lyrics. The music translates his broad sonic interest into sophisticated pop songs. Call it jazz-folk with synthesizers.

KEEP AN EYE FOUNDATION De Keep an Eye Foundation houdt de ogen open voor jonge, veelbelovende talenten. Deze getalenteerde muzikanten, kunstenaars, fotografen, ontwerpers en filmmakers krijgen dankzij verschillende beurzen, prijzen, shows en festivals de kans om hun talent te ontwikkelen, nieuwe mogelijkheden te creëren en bovenal hun creatieve dromen te verwezenlijken. Keep an Eye streeft daarnaast naar uitwisseling tussen de verschillende disciplines en opleidingen. Dit om het werk van de studenten eens in een ander perspectief te zien.

DE KEEP AN EYE FOUNDATION WORDT MATCHMAKER MET ‘MAKER ZOEKT MAKER’ Filmmaker zoekt decorontwerper, componist zoekt tekstschrijver, band zoekt fotograaf, etcetera, etcetera. Bij Maker zoekt Maker, het nieuwste project van de Keep an Eye Foundation, draait het om studenten en alumni van Nederlandse kunstopleidingen. Zij dienen een project in via het online platform www.makerzoektmaker.nl in de hoop de perfecte creatieve match te vinden voor hun project. Studenten en alumni (max 5 jaar) worden uitgenodigd om zich aan te melden bij dit initiatief om zo breed mogelijk nieuwe connecties te kunnen maken. Vier keer per jaar wordt een gematcht project gekozen wat financiële ondersteuning ontvangt ter waarde van € 2.500,om het project te realiseren!
