NativeScapes ~ Native Landscapes With A Purpose

What’s The Buzz?

After 30 years of ecological assessments and habitat restoration and enhancement, Jeff Littleton, founder of Moosewood Ecological, launched NativeScapes last year to focus specifically on adding beauty and purpose to natural areas for land and property owners.

“NativeScapes embraces a broader perspective of landscapes – one that extends beyond the immediate outdoor living spaces to the entire property to enhance other habitats, such as wetlands and woodlands,” says Littleton.

“Our knowledge can transform your outdoor experience; so we invite you to be imaginative and think broadly about how and where you enjoy your property. This vision provides the canvas for your NativeScapes design.”

He continues: “New England is experiencing a tremendous growth in the

need and availability of native plants. The market is responding to the needs and desires of property owners to use alternative methods and native plants to promote more ecological balance on small and large scales. From pollinator gardens and wildlife plantings to wetland enhancements and naturalized landscapes, it all starts with native plants. NativeScapes was inspired by our goal of providing clients with innovative ways to enhance their property for wildlife and beauty using native plants. These are nature’s solutions that have stood the test of time, having evolved with the New England landscape. Native landscaping and habitat enhancement is rooted in the concepts of ecology and conservation biology.”

“Our customers have been amazed at the diversity of bees and butterflies in their pollinator gardens and other naturalized areas,” he adds. “They appreciate how their property has

Fer Fer

I’m looking for a tranquil home to appease my anxious manner. I find shelter life to be adequate but would really prefer the decadent lifestyle of a pampered house cat. I am not one to give away my affection easily and will need an owner that is willing to put in the hard work. I adored my former owner and showered them with love, once I learned to trust them, of course. I am in hopes of finding a new family that I can bond with and love just as much. If you can offer a peaceful household with undisturbed afternoons naps in the warmth of the sun, a ton of love, and loads of treats, then I just might be the girl for you. If you are interested in meeting me, stop by during open hours.

Keene Author Publishes Children’s Book About The Life Of A Curious Tortoise

Abraham's Adventure: A Curious Tortoise Finds His Way Home, a new book by Alison Adams, has been released by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc.

Abraham was a pet tortoise who yearned for adventure. For years, he went to kindergarten with his owner – a teacher. In the classroom, Abe could roam as students worked. He even went outside at recess on the playground.

Abraham had several “great escapes” over the years, both at school and at the author’s home. After he was gone, Adams was encouraged by friends, neighbors, and co-workers to use her imagination to write this story about Abe, the adventurous tortoise loved by so many.

Adams graduated from Keene State College in 1992 with a BS in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education, a master’s degree in Curriculum Design and Instruction from Colorado Christian University, and she is now a retired kindergarten teacher as well as an adjunct professor in the field of education.

She is happily married to her husband whom she met at age 13 at Interlocken Nature Camp. They have two sons. They currently live on a ten-acre farm with their dogs, a flock of chickens and two treasured tortoises. Currently, she welcomes both elementary school and college student groups to conduct studies of water, plants, and wildlife on their farm and land in Keene.

Giving Children Experiences, Not Things

If I were to ask my grown children about their memories growing up, these memories wouldn’t be about the physical things they received but probably about the experiences they had. Things only provide temporary happiness; they get old very quickly. Experiences are memories that can last a lifetime.

There are many pluses to giving children experiences instead of things. The first thing that comes to mind is there will be less clutter of “stuff” accumulating in the house. And we all know how out of control the house can get with everyone in the family accumulating things!

If the experience includes travel, your children will more than likely be learning about a different culture at the same time. These experiences can build a genuine connection with those around you as well.

Monadnock Family

with Lori Catozzi Cook

There is also a longer-lasting feeling of contentment from experiences versus receiving something. Our kids will also learn to appreciate what they have and realize that an experience is just as exciting as a tangible gift. Older kids tend to derive more happiness from experiences rather than physical items because they can remember them.

Allowing kids to try new things is important because it can promote self-esteem and open their outlook on many things in life. And if the experience they are trying is a bit more challenging, that type of risk helps children learn what their limits are and how to manage uncertainties.

Let’s not forget the happiness aspect of receiving an experience. While material things lose their magic, an adventure can be recalled at any time to put a smile on your face. This feeling cannot be thrown away.

Experiences can bond relationships with friends, siblings, and parents. And these happenings are not only beneficial to your children but also you as these provide you with several teachable moments.

Whether watching or participating, there is also fulfillment for parents when giving children experiences versus things.

A few experiences you could give your children might include:

Tickets to a live show

A sleepover with a friend

NativeScapes ~ Native Landscapes With A Purpose

NATIVESCAPES, Continued from page 1 been enhanced by wildflowers blooming in all seasons, and our customers also realize the need to provide other important breeding, nesting, and overwintering habitats to meet all life cycles. They are instantly amazed at the amount of activity of birds throughout the year, from nesting to migration through the winter months. Even the smallest of changes have improved the aesthetics for homeowners while providing important habitats for a regional mission. Customers always appreciate our professional and courteous nature, timeliness, knowledge, and advice, as well as the overall experience working with NativeScapes.”

Littleton has over 30 years of experience as an ecologist and naturalist, and was recently honored as the Educator of the Year awarded by the Cheshire County Conservation District. In addition to being the founder of NativeScapes and Moosewood Ecological, he has served as adjunct faculty at Antioch University since 2007.

The idea of NativeScapes was seeded nearly a decade ago when he saw an overwhelming regional interest to develop and enhance more nativelyinspired, wildlife-friendly areas for property owners. NativeScapes is ideal for all landowners, whether in an urban area or a classic rural New England landscape. It is the collective efforts of property owners that can contribute to a major overall impact on wildlife and beneficial insects. While supporting rare and uncommon species, they can use diverse color palettes, textures, and forms of native plants to enliven their outdoor living spaces and other natural areas.

“Using native plants just makes sense – ecologically, economically, and socially,” he adds. “More and more types of native plants are becoming available at some retail nurseries, but some of these may lack the diversity found at wholesale dealers, and therefore, not readily available to the public. NativeScapes sources its plants and seeds from New England, and nearly all of these are from nurseries in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts.”

The primary function and mission of NativeScapes is to create native landscapes with a purpose. “We strive to awaken our clients’ senses with native plants that are designed for beautiful, functional outdoor living spaces while promoting biodiversity and ecological integrity in the Monadnock region,” Littleton says. “We help our clients make a major ecological impact through natural function and form. This is where beauty and purpose bloom.”

Littleton continues by saying that they offer a soup to nuts path for nativescaping. “This type of functional design focuses on improving environments

Keene Taxpayers Cannot Afford This Project!

To The Editor:

Citizens of Keene have voiced concerns regarding the direction the Keene Infrastructure Project has taken. It was announced March 2, 2023, that the project would be delayed for two years. This extension will allow citizens and business owners to attend the Public Infrastructure Workshops to allow the council and the public to ask questions and to speak out about the project. The next public workshop is scheduled for April 26th at 6 p.m. in the council chambers. There is no final project design at this time.

Citizens do not want the city to rush into making irreversible decisions that will permanently scar our city and cause great hardship to our merchants.

There are questions that the pubic has raised, that have not been addressed. Keene has already paid over half a million dollars in fees to Canadian based Stantac. What were the criteria for choosing Stantac? What office or individual determined what the criteria should be and that Stantac would be hired? Were other consultants interviewed?

I have asked many local people and business people what their thoughts are about this project as recommended by Stantac. The overwhelming response is “are they crazy,” followed by why would the city want to drastically change our Square, remove our history, and erase the character and charm of our vibrant, functioning downtown? Let’s be pragmatic and financially responsible. Fix the pipes, widen the sidewalks, make safety improvements and leave the downtown intact. Save our tax dollars and save our Square.

for wildlife, pollinators, and people with the use of native plants and existing site conditions on your property. These efforts save time, money, and maintenance. Your property is worth the investment of extra planning to ensure a wildly successful project. We offer services from basic design to installation for pollinator gardens and meadows, as well as wildlife plantings to promote biodiversity and beautification of your property. We also provide invasive plant removal and management to help secure the success of your native plant project.”

The team at NativeScapes “provide a rather colorful background,” according to Littleton. “Our interdisciplinary, exemplary team includes experience and educational background in landscape ecology, wildlife biology, natural ecosystems, habitat restoration, and enhancement, native plants, gardening, landscaping, land management, and project management. These skills provide you with the trust needed for a well-planned, successful project.”

NativeScapes clients include private property owners, municipalities, land

trusts, and other non-profit environmental organizations as well as federal and state agencies. On a community level, NativeScapes provides planning and installation services for community-based projects. “The development of pollinator pathways in your town is a perfect example, and we just completed one for Greenfield, New Hampshire,” Littleton says. “These projects can be a joint partnership between public and private properties that establishes a corridor of native plants for bees, butterflies, and other insects, as well as a variety of birds. NativeScapes also provides habitat restoration and enhancement services for private, municipal, and federal entities. These include native plantings for forests, wetlands, and old fields, as well as invasive plant management. Many of these community-based projects are perfect to encourage town-wide involvement while developing and supporting community science efforts.”

Bounceback Falls Flat

As summer approaches, we are seeing our local economy bounce back, but not quite all the way.

Restaurants and retail establishments saw moderate growth in Q1, according to the Federal Reserve’s quarterly report known as The Beige Book

Unemployment numbers are back to pre-pandemic levels. Our real estate market has leveled off, with commercial real estate looking less steady and residential stopping growth altogether. Tourism is up, and employees remain empowered in the face of a looming recession.

Amid all of this, we are not seeing economic recovery in the way we want. A recession is predicted to begin in the last half of the year. Food and rent costs are still through the roof and the labor market is still suffering.

What is happening?

For one thing, housing cost is a major limiting factor in population growth. Historically low interest rates on homes brought people to the state during 2020 and 2021, and for a while we saw an uptick in local economic growth.

However, in the face inflation and growing interest rates, people are being prevented from moving to the state. This is according to a report filed with WMUR

Rising costs of transportation, food, and childcare are also a factor in our state’s slowed growth. Increasing homelessness is another issue.

April first saw the end of the pandemic’s homelessness aid program. Over 20,000 people were left without a roof after the program ends. Homelessness is a cycle. Once it occurs, it is incredibly difficult to escape.

Lack of housing leads to unclean clothing and extreme stress, not a good look for anyone trying to get a job.

Also worth noting is the massive retirement boom that occurred in 2020. National retirement rates skyrocketed in 2020, with many people retiring early instead of waiting out the pandemic.

The resulting skill gap that has been created can be felt in every industry. It is unfortunate that we will be feeling the results for decades across the economy.

Economy and You

About one third of the employed population changed careers during the pandemic. This massive shift on top of early retirement’s popularity is one of the many reasons our state is having one of the worst employee shortages of all time. Teen employment rates are at an all-time high, but it is not enough. Even though we are back to prepandemic unemployment, our state is over 1000 people short of being “fully staffed” at any time.

Patience is critical. Community is vital.

With so much pressure, there are bound to be fissures. Violent crime reports have doubled in the past two years. Restaurants are still reporting some of the worst treatment of serving staff in years. Nearly everyone is floating in a sea of stress.

Being patient with others and ourselves will help build up our local cultures and create spaces where people want to be.

Our state is an amazing place. Even in uncertain times we can turn to the natural beauty around us. It is time to come together as communities. With so many lost and so many retirees, it is unlikely that we will return to prepandemic conditions for many years. It is up to us to make it better.

Amie Spicer moved to the Monadnock area seven years ago from Denver, CO. Before the pandemic, they ran the Community Supper at All Saints Church in Peterborough and created the Community Supper Master List, a statewide data base of local free food resources. They love being active within the local community and taking long drives into the mountains. They are also a long-time performance artist with an emphasis in the circus arts.

How We Heal

My Cherokee teacher always reminded me that we are spirit in a body. We often get distracted by physical discomfort, disease, and even the basics of living. However, we are at our core a spiritual being. When we have disease or need healing, often we think “now what do I do to get better?” Do I take this medicine, do I exercise, or do I go see a doctor? All those things are good; but what was taught to me is that illness is a disconnection from your essence.

Life’s journey takes us in many directions. Illness, discomfort, and hardship are part of our human existence which few of us escape. How we manage these trials is somewhat choice and somewhat preordained – preordained in the sense that you never know what grows in you.

Healing Perspectives

Love and life, light and dark, choice and action, these influences define our journey. As souls in a body, we are apart from the greater consciousness that would guide us. We are daily challenged to direct our own path. How we do that is key to understanding love and life, light and dark, choice and action.

Native peoples who live close to nature draw healing from that connection, the harmony of the physical body and its relationship to mother earth. We are at a time now that this harmony is more elusive. Our

connections have been weakened through energy that disturbs us such as electrical devices, pollution, radio waves, and modern conveniences. Even our method of transportation is separating us from nature.

Our bodies are vibrations and patterns of energy that form as both solid and electrical bodies to regulate health and consciousness. We know that now as we become aware of quantum reality. Our soul or essence enters our body shortly after birth and dwells throughout life as the gateway for our consciousness to evolve through human existence. I was talking with someone today who said she felt life was a precious moment of temporary awareness in the human body.

Healing comes from within. To align your physical and spiritual bodies start by focusing on your heart. Place your hands on your heart and feel the energy of your essence and the energy of your life force coming together here. Work with your essence to expand more fully your consciousness into your body. Feel the flow of light and energy into every part of your body. Encourage life force to join with your soul essence to bring vitality and a return to health. Talk to your body. Talk to your illness.

Connecting with your own essence to heal is primary. And there is power in this. Remember also, you are one of a realm of spiritual beings who would help you but for the asking. I sometimes think that part of this earthly journey is remembering we are spirits – which is hard, and maybe the whole point.

The Trillion Dollar Silencer By Local Author

Local author and Keene State College Professor Emerita, Joan Roelofs, recently published The Trillion Dollar Silencer: Why There Is So Little Anti-War Protest in the United States by Clarity Press. This book has a section on New Hampshire that includes Keene.

The Trillion Dollar Silencer investigates the astounding lack of popular protest at the death and destruction that the military industrial complex is inflicting on people, nations, and the environment, and its budgetdraining costs. Where is the antiwar protest by progressives, libertarians, environmentalists, civil rights advocates, academics, clergy, community volunteers, artists, et al? This book focuses on how military largesse infests such public sectors’ interests. For more details, visit www.joanroelofs. wordpress.com.

Read the Monadnock Shopper News online: www.shoppernews.com

Death denial in the United States is commonplace. Even the language that is used, such as “passed on” or “slipped away,” indicates how the subject of dying is avoided. And this is understandable, as thinking about death can be terrifying for all kinds of reasons. But being able to discuss death wishes with elderly loved ones is especially important.

Kasey March, an end of life doula, and Susan MacNeil, author of 18 Minutes: A Daughter’s Primer on Life & Death, will offer a chance to talk about preparing for a good death through the lens of their own unique experiences. March is a trained International End of Life Doula (INELDA) and MacNeil experienced her mother’s death in early 2022. Sharing their insight, the two-hour session will provide a framework for others to join in the conversation about all aspects of death. This program is not intended to be a support group although the conversation will be conducted in a compassionate environment. The event is free and open to all.

Grant Program Available To Conserve State’s Farmlands And Strengthen Farm Businesses

The NH Association of Conservation Districts will once again request proposals from land trusts for those who seek funding to work with New Hampshire farms to conserve their land and improve the viability of their farm business.

There is $100,000 available in the 2023 funding cycle. Awards no greater than $20,000 will be considered. Funding is available to support activities in two broad categories: financial assistance to offset costs associated with farmland conservation projects, and technical assistance to support farm business viability and succession planning.

Land trust applicants should be committed to bringing together experts in land conservation, succession planning, and farm viability to advance the

farm’s business goals. Eligible applicants must be non-profit tax exempt 501(c)(3) organizations that have land conservation as their primary function and are actively working to conserve farmland in the state of New Hampshire. Applicants should carefully review the request for proposals and application materials at www. cheshireconservation.org/nhfff. Completed applications are due by Wednesday, May 31st and can be submitted digitally or by hard copy through the mail. Proposals can be mailed to NH Farm Future Fund, Cheshire County Conservation District, 11 Industrial Park Drive, Walpole, NH 03608 or emailed to amanda@cheshireconservation.org.

Knight Affordable Housing Solutions Helps With Answer To Housing Crisis

It is well known that there is a housing crisis due to the lack of affordable housing in the Monadnock region and beyond. Ben Knight has stepped up to help with a new business, Knight Affordable Housing Solutions.

Knight’s background in home remodeling came to the fore when he learned about tiny houses a few years ago. “I built and sold my first tiny house on wheels this past year…,” said Knight. “Starting this business is my way of being able to help others along a similar journey.”

For more details and see photos of tiny houses, visit www.knightaffordablehousingsolutions.com or call 603-313-1504.

Ben Knight of Knight Affordable Housing Solutions poses with one of his tiny house projects.

With the arrival of spring, Allen Brothers Farm is busy stocking their garden center with a dazzling assortment of seasonal favorites. The family owned and operated farm, a regional favorite since 1956, is nothing short of a gardener’s paradise, as evidenced by their tantalizing selection of hydrangea (over 80 varieties), daffodils, hyacinth, tulips, pansies, and all-weather crops. Add to that a mix of herbs, seeds, bulbs, succulents, wall planters, hanging baskets, statuary, birdbaths and water fountains.

“Our greenhouses are bursting at the seams,” says Heather Wilson, garden center manager. And for those seri-

ous “green thumbers,” Allen Brothers has a robust mulch yard, offering top soil, organic compost, and their own specialty raised-bed mix. Visitors to the farmstand will see two new additions, including a two-acre nursery, complete with trees, shrubs, and an expanded selection of fruit trees, and a new gift shop with locally crafted items, outdoor accents, high-end pottery, tub rugs, and many garden-themed gifts. Located on Route 5 (exit 5 off of Route 91) in Westminster, VT, Allen Brothers Farms is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They can be reached by phone at 802-722-3395, or visit them online at allenbrothersfarms.com.

How

You forgot that there were strings.

You forgot who was doing the talking, too. No, your eyes were stuck on the puppet with a funny voice that made you forget that this was a show, that a bit of cloth and a wooden face were only objects of theater. Didn’t you see the puppeteer’s lips move? As in the new book How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix, wasn’t there a human holding the strings?

Driving by it, her parents house looked smaller then she remembered.

Then again, it had been some time since Louise Joyner had been home. Years ago, she’d escaped the place and never looked back, returning only when necessary – like now, when she and her brother, Mark, had a double-funeral to plan and that shabby old house to clear out.

She couldn’t say she had a bad childhood, but it wasn’t normal, either. Nancy Joyner had been a good mother, but her focus was more on doll collecting, puppet-making, and puppet-ministry for the church. Sometimes, it felt as if Louise and Mark were raised with a third sibling, a ratty old puppet named Pupkin that their mother’d had since she was a child.

That was embarrassing and somewhat traumatic, which is why Louise moved to California long ago,

as far from Charleston as she could get. But then her parents were killed in an accident, she had to hurry home, and if that wasn’t enough heartbreak, she learned that they’d left everything to Mark, except their mother’s artwork.

It didn’t help that Mark was being a jerk.

He wanted the house cleaned out immediately, even before the funeral. He tried to bar Louise from getting their mother’s crafts and dolls, that awful taxidermed squirrel Nativity, all the marionettes and puppets and Pupkin, but Louise was adamant.

She wanted that awful inheritance.

Truthfully, though, she’d probably just throw it all away later. True Fact Number Two: they were creepy things, and the worst of her childhood.

She’d go home and forget it all happened.

But she wouldn’t go alone...

If there was a dial on the outside of How to Sell a Haunted House, you wouldn’t be surprised to see it turned up high. The story inside this book offers maximum creepiness, freaky googly-eyes, and dolls that move. The only thing better would be a ghost.

Oh, wait. There’s a ghost in here, too.

And nightmares, and animals with tiny teeth, and electric tools that behave on their own, an attic, beloved stuffed toys with the capability for disappointment, and a thick thread of dark humor trailing lazily throughout this story. Author Grady Hendrix absolutely knows how to make the hair stand up on the back of your neck, but he also knows how to wink at readers who are ready to get a joke.

Why, oh why does it always have to be dolls and puppets? Because it does, of course. And for that, you’re going to love How to Sell a Haunted House, no strings attached.

Earth Day Events Planned In Keene

This year Earth Day in Keene promises lots of interesting and fun activities. Information and vendor tables will be found from the Monadnock Food Co-op to Railroad Square, and at Central Square, too. Electric vehicles will be on display, with test drives possible from the Whitney Brothers parking lot. Downtown Keene will be hopping between noon and 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 22nd.

Keene’s Clean Energy Team will be on Central Square between 1:30 and 3 p.m. They will host a rally for environmentalists of all ages, and they’ve lined up a diverse range of speakers addressing topics that

matter. Those who are interested in holding a sign on the perimeter of Central Square should arrive around 1:30 p.m. Hand-made signs are always best, but they will have signs to lend for those who aren’t able to create their own.

To hear inspiring short talks on varied climate and clean energy subjects, be there at 2 p.m. For hopeful news about community power in Keene, be at Central Square at 2:30 p.m to hear from Mayor George Hansel and Mari Brunner.

Folks are encouraged to head downtown for lunch as part of the Earth Day adventure. Keene will provide lots of delicious options, including a barbecue on the patio at the Food Co-op from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Earth Day in Keene on April 22nd will provide lots of information, and offer ways folks can become active in organizations which are part of the worldwide climate movement.

92 Acres Conserved In Alstead And Marlow

The Monadnock Conservancy has finalized the placement of two conservation easements on properties owned by Kroka Expeditions in Marlow.

The first easement was finalized at the end of 2022 and comprises 15 acres of farmland along Rogers Road in Alstead. The second was finalized in March of this year and protects 77 acres of Kroka’s headquarters campus on Route 123 in Marlow and Alstead.

“It is only fitting that we partner with the Monadnock Conservancy to ensure that Kroka’s land will be secured as a long-term agricultural and recreational resource for our neighborhood,” says Nathan Lyczak, Kroka’s executive director.

Make Earth Day Every Day

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd every year. The day aims to raise awareness, inspire more mindfulness, protect the environment, and focus on the need for conservation.

The earth provides us with everything we need to grow food and live healthy lives. We have our natural resources – land, water, animals, and plants. This day should be spent celebrating the planet’s natural resources.

From space, earth looks like a big blue marble with all it’s blues and greens wrapped in swirls of white. From our vantage point, the earth still has beauty, but it is often marred by smoke in the skies, ruined waterways, or trash stuck to the side of the streets. It sometimes seems that humans have treated the earth not so much as a garden but as a dump. We only get one earth and we should be helping the environment, not hurting it.

Our planet is referred to as Mother Earth; it gives us food, water, and shelter. Earth Day is a reminder to keep our eye on the big blue marble, a reminder that earth is neither a garden nor a dump, it is our home, and it is our lifesupport system.

Earth Day began on April 22, 1970, as a time for all people to celebrate planet Earth and renew our dedication to making the world safer, healthier, and cleaner for all of us and for generations yet to come. If we keep treating it the way we do now, there may not

be an Earth for other generations to experience.

There are a few simple tips on improving environmental conditions. You can do these every day and contribute to positive effect on the planet: sort the trash, and follow the “Rs”: reduce, reuse, recycle, repurpose, and repair.

Take part in the improvement in your town and home by reducing expenditure of gasoline, reduce energy usage, pick up and clean roadsides, and think satiability, like taking a piece of your lawn and letting it be a garden. Every little bit helps.

When looking at water, the amount of fresh clean water becomes less and less. Scientists ask everyone on the planet to take care of the resources and to spend water reasonably, lowering usage. By doing this you will save the water resources.

We have to make efforts about care of the planet not only once a year, but also every day. You can easily take part in this operation. Our future, and the future of our descendants, depends on it.

These acts may be the solution to save the life-support system for our children and their children and all future generations to come. We should do all that we can to be good stewards of our planet.

Long journeys are comprised of small steps, one after another. Enough small steps, by each one of us, may save the Earth... yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Other Countries

Many Of Our Processed Foods Contain Ingredients Banned In

Americans, for the most part, are a trusting lot. We like to think that the government watches out for us – if something isn’t good for us, the authorities would have quite a bit to say about it. I think that decades ago that was true. We set up protective agencies, health departments, investigative groups, and others. They were designed to be our watchdogs

and we depended upon them to ferret out criminals, unearth fraud, point out the inconsistencies of lies, and protect us from tyrants.

But now things are different. According to Return to Now, a whopping 80 percent of the processed foods in our supermarkets contain ingredients that are banned in other countries. The book, Rich Foods, Poor Foods, the Ultimate Grocery Purchasing System, lists some of the worst. These include:

Green Monadnock with

Food colorings such as yellow dye #5 and yellow dye #6, which is made from coal tar and has suspected links to ADHD, allergies, and some cancers. I have a friend whose son is particularly bothered by red dyes. Genetically modified crops. No long-term studies have ever been done on the effects of these foods on human bodies or health. And, they are conscientiously grown with the ability to withstand very high doses of insecticides during their production. Much of these insecticides come from Roundup, which has been banned in nearly every European country. Bisphenol-A. BPA is used in the manufacture of most plastics. It is found in the linings of canned foods as well as plastic bottles, baby bottles, and food storage containers.

Growth hormones and antibiotics. Apparently, so many US farmers use ractopene and many antibiotics that over 160 nations worldwide now say “No” to US meats.

Chemical fertilizers. According, again, to Rich Foods, Poor Foods, between 1990 and 1995 600 different companies from 44 different states sent a whopping 270,000,000 pounds of toxic waste to fertilizer companies and farms. They did not remove the toxic waste including dioxin and arsenic.

However, there is a way to avoid these foods. Buy local and organic. Here in New Hampshire, we are very fortunate to have many local farms that are producing lots of healthy foods. Many are not “certified” organic, but are raising their vegetables, fruits, and animals in humane and decent circumstances. They are also in our back yards so these foods don’t have to be shipped thousands of miles away.

When examining foods, it’s important to also think about the lives that have created it. Many factory farms put animals in tight-packed conditions with no ability to move around and often without the benefit of sunshine. These animals are unhappy and depressed. This energy is contained within their meat and eggs. When we eat it, it becomes part of us. Visit the farms where your food is grown. Check to see if the plants and animals are treated well. This also keeps the cash flowing in our community. And, your health will benefit.

WHAT TO BRING: Products marked toxic, poison, corrosive, irritant, hazardous, flammable, danger. If you think it’s hazardous, bring it up.

Unfortunately, many of our agencies have been captured by the large corporations that can afford to lobby our government. If you run for office, you need to have lots of capital. If you want to keep that money coming, well…

WHAT NOT TO BRING: Empty Containers (can be recycled), Latex Paint, Ammunition, Fireworks, Radioactive Materials, Make-Up & Toiletries.

OTHER INFORMATION: Containers must be labeled as to their contents. No containers larger than 10 gallons will be accepted.

ALSO: Check out our new reuse center for items such as good quality paint or various cleaning products. Perfect for a small job and, best of all, it’s FREE!

Schedule

The only way to take back our power is to keep it local. Buy from the people you can keep an eye on. Shop at small stores instead of the big box ones. Money still talks.

Promote Change By Eating Healthy Foods

Earth Day, Saturday, April 22nd, is an annual celebration that honors the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness of the need to protect natural resources for future generations. A global event, Earth Day encourages people to engage in conserving the environment by eating healthy foods, attending rallies and concerts, and participating in road-side clean-ups and tree-planting activities.

Originally organized in April 1970 by Wisconsin US Senator Gaylord Nelson, after witnessing the damage caused by an oil spill in Santa Barbara CA the previous year. Nelson hoped that Earth Day would be a way to involve people and educate them about the importance of protecting their environment. Since that day, the yearly event has been celebrated in more than 103 countries – more than 1 billion people around the world have taken part in Earth Day.

What foods we eat is an important consideration, both for our bodies and the earth. In addition to recycling and food composting, eating a wide variety of healthy vegetables, sustainable seafood, and when possible, locally grown meats and poultry, can help reduce the risk of chronic disease and obesity, as well as contribute to a more healthy environment.

Smeared Butter and Herbs

Enjoy this delightful appetizer as you sit with friends and sip a favorite beverage. Or serve it with a simple meal, such as those suggested in this week’s column. Feel free to mix it up with your favorite herbs and other toppings; adjust amounts as needed. (The recipe may also be made with full-fat cream cheese, instead of butter.)

Directions: Smear about one stick good quality, soft butter on a round wooden cutting board or plate; sprinkle with a bit of coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper. Then sprinkle on layers of coarsely torn or chopped fresh herbs (such as rosemary, parsley, chives, thyme) and/or torn baby greens and a few fresh edible flowers (Johnnie jump-ups, nasturtiums). Serve with a nice round of warm artisan bread.

Porcini and Sausage Stew

Mushrooms, sausage and garlic combine with red wine to make an earthy dish to serve on polenta or pasta. Makes four servings.

Ingredients:

1 lb. sweet Italian sausage, casings removed

2 tablespoons chopped garlic

2 (14½ oz. each) cans diced, peeled tomatoes

2 oz. dried porcini or shiitake mushrooms, soaked in 2 cups hot water for 10 minutes and their liquid

3/4 cup dry red wine

2 bay leaves

oil for sauteing

Sauté Italian sausage in a little oil in large pan, breaking up and cooking until no longer pink. Add chopped garlic and sauté several minutes longer. Add tomatoes, porcini mushrooms and their liquid, red wine and bay leaves; bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook one and a half to two hours, until reduced to about five cups, or until most of the liquid (but not all) is gone. Remove bay leaves. Serve over cooked polenta or pasta. Note: if desired, use a mixture of both kinds of dried mushrooms.

Fried Brook Trout

Earth Day is also the opening day in New Hampshire this year for fishing in designated trout ponds. For those who don’t have their own wood smoke and waterfall, the following way to cook fresh-caught local trout at home will please most fish lovers. So put on some waterfall music and enjoy! (This recipe also works well for small rainbow trout and smelts.)

Ingredients:

6-8 small brook trout, up to eight inches

salt and freshly ground pepper as desired

1/4 cup flour

3 tablespoons butter, divided

2 tablespoons chopped chives

lemon slices

Wash and clean trout. Salt and pepper each and roll lightly in flour on a piece of waxed paper, or

shake in a paper bag. Heat two tablespoons of butter in heavy frying pan until sizzling hot. Turn down heat to prevent burning and fry trout quickly, about two minutes on each side, or until it flakes when tested with a fork. Remove fish from pan to hot platter and keep warm. Add another tablespoon of butter to pan and swish around with the chopped chives. Let sizzle several minutes and pour over the trout. Top each serving with a slice of lemon. Two to three servings, depending upon size of fish and appetites.

Cooking Corner

Eggplant Parmesan

Sesame seeds, herbs and cheese add flavorful nutrition to this vegetarian meal served on brown rice, Makes four servings.

Ingredients:

1 large eggplant, sliced 1/2-inch oil, as needed

2 cups canned tomatoes, mostly drained

1⁄2 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon chopped parsley

1 bay leaf

1⁄4 teaspoon each oregano, thyme, and rosemary

2 garlic cloves, crushed

2 tablespoons each grated onion, green pepper, and carrot

1⁄2 cup parmesan cheese, grated

1⁄4 cup sesame seed, roasted lightly and crushed coarsely

1⁄2 lb. mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced

2 cups raw brown rice, cooked

Sauté the eggplant slices in oil over high heat until browned slightly, drain on paper towels, and set aside. Combine tomatoes, salt, herbs, garlic, and grated vegetables in a skillet, cover, and simmer 15 minutes. Remove bay leaf, add Parmesan cheese and roasted sesame seed; blend well. Place a layer of eggplant in an oiled, shallow two-quart baking dish. Cover with half the tomato sauce, then half the mozzarella cheese. Repeat layers, and bake at 350 degrees about 30 minutes, until cheese is melted and begins to brown. Serve over the cooked rice.

Grilled Chicken Kebabs with Strawberry Chutney

The strawberry chutney can be made early in the day and refrigerated. Then when you’re ready to eat, grill the chicken breast kebabs and serve topped with the chutney; rice and fresh green beans pair well with this dish. Serves six.

Ingredients:

1/3 cup brown sugar

1 tablespoon water

1/2 cup raspberry vinegar

1 medium Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored and finely chopped

2 tablespoons chopped candied ginger

1 clove garlic, minced

1/2 small jalapeño pepper, seeded and minced pinch each ground cloves, cinnamon, salt and pepper

1 pint strawberries, hulled and chopped, divided

2 whole chicken breasts, boned, skinned and cut into kebabs

Combine sugar and water in heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium high heat; boil for two to three minutes until mixture is caramelized. Stir in vinegar and apples; return to boil. Reduce heat to medium low, add candied ginger, garlic, jalapeño, spices and salt and pepper; simmer for five minutes. Remove from heat and pour mixture into food processor or blender. Add half the strawberries; process lightly for about 10 seconds. Mixture should be chunky. Pour into a bowl; add rest of strawberries and set aside. Grill chicken kebabs until nicely browned and cooked through. Place on individual serving plates and top with several spoonfuls of chutney.

Chicken, Asparagus and Apple Salad

Unwind with this refreshing, simple salad for one.

Ingredients:

1/3 cup cooked, chopped chicken breast

1/2 cup steamed asparagus, cut into 1-inch pieces, cooking water reserved

1/4 cup diced apple

Dressing:

1 tablespoon cider vinegar

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 teaspoon honey salt and pepper, to taste

Combine chicken, asparagus, and apple. Mix together vinegar, oil, honey; season with salt and pepper. Toss with salad, adding one teaspoon or two of asparagus water if desired.

In 1535, French explorer Jacques Cartier was exploring Canada’s eastern coasts. He was looking for a northwest passage to Asia and its riches. When his ships became frozen in the ice for five months, food supplies ran low and his crew became critically ill with scurvy, a disease resulting from a lack of Vitamin C in the diet.

After witnessing an amazing recovery from the illness by the Iroquois, Cartier turned to the natives for help. The Iroquois saved the explorer and his crew by giving them a “tea” made from the bark and needles of a tree they called “Annedda.” This tree is thought to be the eastern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis). The tree is extremely rich in vitamin C and other nutrients. According to accounts, the crew’s recovery after drinking the tea was so rapid “they almost killed each other to have it first“. It is no wonder they would come to call the tree arborvitae or “Tree of life”.

By the spring of 1536, Cartier crew’s health had been restored and they were able to return to France.

Woods and Gardens

with Phyllis Shemchuk

Eastern White Pine ( Pinus Strobus) is another conifer with a past. The needles of the white pine grow in clusters of five and were seen as a symbol of unity to warring native tribes. So when the Five Nations of the Iroquois were at war, they gathered below a giant white pine tree to work things out.

White pines grew to towering heights over other trees. This made them good candidates for ship masts for England’s royal navy ships.

The Pine Tree Riot occurred on April 14, 1772 in Weare, NH. It was the result of men from Weare and surrounding towns resisting British authority. They had illegally cut white pine trees that had been

The Eastern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis) is extremely rich in vitamin C and other nutrients. reserved for the Royal Navy. Not only did the colonists cut the pines, but they also refused to pay the penalty fine which the colonists viewed as another tax from King George.

Of the approximately 125 pine species in the world, 101 pine species can be found in the US.

The Eastern white pine tree is native to the northeastern US and Canada and is the state tree of Maine and Michigan. It is a slow to moderate growing conifer. Trees at least 800 years old are known to exist and they can grow to a height of 100 feet tall. They have an edible and nutritious inner bark which was used by the native Americans as a food source when all other food became scarce.

Gram for gram pine needles have more vitamin C in them than an orange.

Conifer needles and tree bark make up most of the porcupine’s winter diet. However, some types of conifers can be toxic and others can harm pregnant women. Careful research or help from a knowledgeable forager should be sought before ingesting any conifer product.

New Hampshire Housing Releases Statewide Housing Needs Assessment

Housing, Continued from page 13

Homeownership Challenges From 2019 to 2022, the median home price in New Hampshire rose by 50 percent. As a result, middle to high income renter households are less likely to become homeowners.

Rental Challenges The state’s extremely low vacancy rate favors higher-income renters, as demand pushes rents beyond affordability levels for others, especially lower-income renters.

Housing Affordability Rent and home price increases outpaced wage growth. Between 2000 and 2020, New Hampshire’s home sales prices rose 111 percent and rents increased 94 percent, while household median income increased only 73 percent.

Demographics Population growth will continue to slow through 2040, and New Hampshire’s population will become older, with fewer children per household. The desire to “age in place” will continue to limit the supply of homes available to purchase.

As part of its statutory responsibilities, New Hampshire Housing regularly conducts an assessment of the state’s housing market and housing needs. This 2023 assessment is intended to guide decisions affecting housing production and choice by providing regional and statewide data on supply and production, affordability challenges, housing needs, and projected housing demand.
