Shadwell Farm of Lexington began to sponsor Keeneland’s one-mile turf stakes in the fall of 1999. At that time, the stakes was renamed the Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile and the purse was increased by $150,000 to $400,000-added. The race was formerly run as the Keeneland Breeders’ Cup Mile. The purse for the Shadwell Turf Mile was increased to $750,000 in 2012 and became Keeneland’s first million-dollar race in 2014.
