WELCOME TO KE
Inspiring adventures since 1984
I love being involved in the production of this Guide to Adventure every year; discussing the many stories and experiences that you, our well-travelled customers, have sent us, as well as reflecting on the KE team’s travels and hearing from our amazing leaders and local ground agents from around the world.
You will also find references to our new UK training weekends in Scotland and the Lake District, which I’m thrilled to introduce you to. These will be a great way for you to meet the KE team (who will host and lead the walks) and get an idea of the different activity grades that we use on all our trips.
The teams here in Keswick and in each destination do an incredible job, and I’m delighted that we have a bit of a ‘behind the scenes’ focus this year, bringing to life how our operation works, and showcasing many of our brilliant leaders.
I hope that you find some travel inspiration within these pages; enjoy the journey! Ashley Toft, CEO
We’ve been working on some exciting new trips and destinations for 2027, which also include a range of flight-free trips with rail travel from the UK.

WHAT’S HOT COSTA RICA Costa Rica continues to prove its credentials as one of the world’s most exciting adventure destinations, and is set to be a firm favourite for 2027. Few countries pack so much into such a small space; with lush rainforests, volcanic landscapes, beautiful coastlines and extraordinary wildlife. Add warm weather and plenty of opportunities to escape into the wilderness, and it’s easy to see why travellers keep returning. Costa Rica Walks and Wildlife Trip Code: CWW
SRI LANKA “The Pearl of the Indian Ocean” perfectly captures Sri Lanka’s appeal. This compact island combines abundant wildlife, white-sand beaches, fascinating culture and ancient history. Explore atmospheric temples, discover the lush tea-growing highlands and encounter wildlife along the way. From bustling towns to tranquil trails, Sri Lanka offers a remarkable variety of experiences and remains one of our top destinations for 2027. Temples and Tea Trails of Sri Lanka Trip Code: SLT
KYRGYZSTAN Central Asia continues to be one of our best-selling regions for 2027, with Kyrgyzstan a particular favourite. Our Mountains and Lakes of Kyrgyzstan adventure explores the spectacular Tien Shan Mountains and beautiful Issyk-Kul Lake. Remote valleys, vast mountain vistas and encounters with nomadic communities, including eagle hunters, combine to create an unforgettable journey. With dramatic scenery, fascinating traditions and few crowds, it captures the true spirit of adventure. Mountains and Lakes of Kyrgyzstan Trip Code: KTS
WHAT’S TRENDING Travel is constantly evolving, shaped by global events, a growing appetite for more responsible journeys, changing weather patterns and, perhaps most excitingly, the desire to discover places that remain off the beaten track. While Central and Western Europe continue to hold strong appeal for adventure travellers, increasingly warm summer temperatures are encouraging people to rethink when, and where, they travel. The result is a growing appetite for journeys earlier and later in the season, as well as a renewed interest in the Nordic regions. Norway, Sweden and Iceland offer the perfect escape from the summer crowds and heat, while still delivering the mountain adventures that travellers crave.
we’re also introducing several trips that include rail travel from the UK, making the journey itself part of the adventure. Further east, Central Asia continues to capture the imagination, with remote mountain ranges, little-visited landscapes and the ancient Silk Roads driving interest in the region. As travel evolves, so too does adventure. It’s no longer simply about going further, but travelling more thoughtfully, staying longer and discovering places that offer a genuine sense of exploration.
We’re also seeing a continued shift towards more responsible travel, with travellers choosing to stay longer and explore more deeply. We’ve responded with destinations where journeys can be combined to create longer, more immersive adventures, including across South America. Interest in travelling by rail is growing too, so for 2027,

WILD LOFOTEN Step inside a landscape that feels straight out of a fantasy world, where jagged granite peaks plunge into sheltered fjords, colourful fishing villages cling to the shoreline, and white-sand beaches wouldn't look out of place in the tropics. Welcome to the Lofoten Islands.
PHOTO: Trekking towards the Kåkersundet Bridge. Taken by KE's Kerrie on the Fjords and Fjells of the Lofoten Islands walking holiday.
AN AMAZING TRIP “The scenery in the Lofoten Islands is indescribably beautiful. The peaks rise almost vertically from the sea, contrasting with the wide expanses of wild beaches and pretty harbours surrounded by colourful fishermen’s cottages. The trip really exceeded my expectations.” Susan on her 1st trip with KE Fjords and Fjells of the Lofoten Islands | Trip Code: LOF

WILD LOFOTEN
9
FIVE FACTS ABOUT LOFOTEN 1. THE GOLDEN HOUR THAT NEVER ENDS In the summer months, Lofoten offers an around-the-clock golden glow from the Midnight Sun. Rorbu huts are bathed in red and mountains and white-sand beaches in shifting tones of orange. This already extraordinary landscape resembles a beautifully lit painting.
2. THE LYNX’S FOOT
Why are the Lofoten Islands one of KE’s best-selling destinations? Lofoten is an archipelago of extraordinary contrasts: dramatic peaks standing tall from the sea, with charming communities dotted about which seem almost out of place in the ruggedness that surrounds them. In Moskenes, you find yourself marvelling that people live here at all. In Sørvågen, red rorbu cabins perch on stilts over the water's edge, their reflections cutting across the fjord below, and in Reine - one of the most beautiful villages in Norway - deep-blue fjords and towering mountains frame a settlement so perfectly situated it barely seems real. The walking is what draws most KE travellers here, and it delivers on every level. Lofoten offers extraordinary variety: remote coastal paths overlooking water of improbable colour, thrilling ridgelines among the high peaks and summit views that stop even experienced mountain walkers in their tracks. From the top of Ryten (543m), you look directly down over the untouched sweep of Kvalvika beach below - one of the most celebrated viewpoints in Norway. Reinebringen (448m) rises directly above Reine (pictured above), its summit revealing the full drama of the fjords below. The Munkebu hike, one of Lofoten’s finest, leads to the legendary Munkebu mountain
hut, perched high above the islands. On the southwest peninsula of Flakstadøya, the dramatic peak of Volandstinden (also known as Shark’s Fin) rises to 457m, while the peak of Nesfjellet (406m), sits flanked by two majestic fjords - Skjelfjorden to the east and Selfjorden to the west. Wildlife is woven into every day. White-tailed sea eagles are a neardaily presence, circling effortlessly on thermals above the ridgelines. When one passes overhead, with a wingspan stretching up to 2.5m, the sheer sight of it will stop you in your tracks. From May to September and November to January, the fjords offer something even more extraordinary orca and humpback whales surfacing from the cold water below. On land, red foxes, moose and the elusive ermine, moving quietly through the landscape, have all been spotted by KE groups. Evenings bring their own reward, with fresh fish bought from the quayside that morning and prepared by your guide and eaten with new friends as the Arctic light holds long into the night. If you're lucky, as our very own Lofoten expert Kerrie was, the day might end with a Nordic sauna and a plunge straight into the fjord. Take a trip to the Lofoten Islands and experience them for yourself - some places simply have to be seen to be believed.
Lofoten takes its name from the Old Norse, ‘Lofotr’, meaning ‘lynx’s foot’; a reference to the jagged outline of the central island.
3. THE FISH THAT WANDERS Between January and April, millions of migratory Arctic cod travel from the Barents Sea to spawn in the Vestfjord, making Lofoten the historic epicentre of one of the world's great fisheries.
4. THE GULF STREAM GIFT Despite lying just inside the Arctic Circle, Lofoten remains astonishingly mild and ice-free year-round, and the Gulf Stream is responsible. Carrying warm water from the subtropics across the Atlantic and past the Norwegian coast, it continuously transfers heat into the Arctic atmosphere, keeping these islands far balmier than their latitude suggests.
5. THE CARIBBEAN OF THE ARCTIC The striking colour of the sea comes from what lies beneath: beaches composed of fine, bright white crushed shells that act as a giant underwater mirror, bouncing brilliant blues and greens back up through the crystal-clear water above.

longest days, but you spend the majority of it walking along a high, exposed path with stunning views down into the valley and across to the neighbouring peaks.”
THE TOUR DE MONTE ROSA
How did you train?
An alternative Alpine classic
“The self-supported nature of this trek, combined with the distance and elevation you cover, means you need to arrive pretty fit. I found that my back-to-back training days in the Lake District hills, covering 15–18km each day with around 1,000m of elevation gain, were enough. If you can't get into the hills as often, then just getting out as much as possible with a full backpack on will still be a big help, even if you can’t accumulate that level of ascent.”
What did you pack?
Quieter than the Tour du Mont Blanc but every bit as spectacular, the Tour de Monte Rosa delivers a true Alpine adventure. KE’s Product Executive, Aaron, explains why it deserves a place on every trekker's wish list.
one had striking views over the Theodul Glacier, directly beneath the Klein Matterhorn and Breithorn. All of the huts provided excellent food, dormitory-style rooms and unforgettable camaraderie.”
“I chose the Tour de Monte Rosa as my first trip with KE because it offers a true Alpine trek without the crowds you sometimes find on the more well-known routes. Like all good Alpine treks, I spent much of the trip staying in mountain huts.
What were your highlights?
These ranged from hotel-style huts to purpose-built mountain huts, of which
“Two parts of the trek really stand out in my memory. The first was seeing the Matterhorn appear above the horizon for the first time. Knowing that the journey to reach that view had been completed exclusively on foot was a special feeling. The final day of the trek is also one of the most breathtaking. It is one of the
“I found that I needed to pack light for this trek. As it’s self-supported, we had to carry everything we needed from an equipment point of view. I regularly walk and run at home in the Lake District and almost never use trekking poles. However, on the TMR I found them useful. They took a huge amount of strain off my legs on the descents, something I really noticed later in the trek.”
What’s next for you? “Trekking the Tour de Monte Rosa has made me even more determined to get into the Alps and climb some peaks. The Italian Summit Climber is now firmly on my to-do list.” Find out more about the GR20 Aaron travelled on KE’s Tour de Monte Rosa trekking holiday | Trip Code: TMR

PILGRIMAGE JOURNEYS
GREAT PILGRIMAGE JOURNEYS
What inspired you to walk the Camino de Santiago?
What surprised you most about the camaraderie?
Phill - “I have been inspired by TV programmes about the Camino and also the film ‘The Way’ so have always thought it would be something I would like to do. I love walking and we wanted to do a big trip for our 60th birthdays.” Louise - “Like Phill, I love walking and have heard lots about the Camino from various friends who have done it. The Portuguese route was the right length for us to fit around work, and we liked that it was a complete journey.”
Phill - “I was really surprised by how friendly everyone was. We were lucky enough to meet three wonderful Australian women on the first day: Marcia, Jenny and Denise, and we walked, talked and ate with them every day. It was fun chatting to other people from all over the world on the route too and you often met up with them again. We really did meet some wonderful people of all ages! All the locals were friendly too and wished us ‘Bom Caminho’ as we passed by.”
Can you paint a picture of a typical day on the Camino?
What rituals or moments became highlights each day?
We caught up with them to hear about the moments that made their Camino so special and why they'd encourage anyone who's ever dreamed of walking it to take that first step.
Louise - “Each day followed a simple routine. After breakfast, we'd leave our bags to be transferred and set off around 9am, often browsing a local market for picnic supplies beforehand.
For more ideas on how you could celebrate a significant birthday, turn to page 42
Coffee stops soon became a daily highlight, giving us time to catch up with fellow pilgrims and enjoy a wellearned treat. After a few more hours of walking and a picnic or café lunch along the route, we'd continue to our next destination, arriving mid-afternoon for a celebratory beer before sampling the local cuisine of the town or village we found ourselves in. Then we'd have an early night, ready to do it all again.”
Louise - “Probably our morning coffee break. This gave us time to look at the scenery, have a rest, practise our Portuguese, swap stories with fellow pilgrims in the cafés and watch Jenny eat cake! Jenny tried a different type of cake every day, sometimes two!”
When Phill and Louise, best friends for more than 50 years, set out on KE’s Portuguese Camino to celebrate their 60th birthdays, they expected beautiful scenery and rewarding walking. What they found was so much more: new friendships, simple daily rituals to cherish, delicious local food and a renewed appreciation for slowing down and embracing the journey.
Speak to one of our experts 017687 73966
Was there a part of the route that stands out, and why? Phill - “Day five, from Balugães to Ponte de Lima, will always stay with me. We walked through peaceful vineyards and quiet country lanes, passing spectacular spring flowers, including huge calla lilies and angel’s trumpets.

FIVE THINGS ABOUT CAMINO HOLY YEAR 2027 A HOLY YEAR IS RARE A Holy Year occurs when St James’ Day (25th July) falls on a Sunday. These Jubilee years follow a cycle of 6, 5, 6 and 11 years, meaning they only happen 14 times in a century.
THE HOLY DOOR IS OPENED
As it was Good Friday, the day felt even more special as we witnessed local Catholic traditions along the way. We also met a Dutch girl selling handmade friendship bracelets outside her grandparents’ farm – a keepsake the five of us all wore. Arriving in the beautiful riverside town of Ponte de Lima, with its lively markets, magnificent gardens and the best meal of the trip, was the perfect ending to an unforgettable day.”
Did you find it physically demanding? Louise - “Not really. We were both fairly fit before we went and after about the third day, we could feel ourselves getting fitter. It felt strange when we reached Santiago de Compostela and there was no more walking planned; we all felt the urge to keep going!”
Do you have any tips? • “Take a swimming costume for river swims and the hotel pools. • Safety pins to attach your drying socks onto your day pack. • Two pairs of walking shoes. • A penknife and a lunchbox. for making your own lunch. • If you like decaf tea, take your own tea bags as we didn’t find anywhere selling them. • A stainless-steel vacuum water bottle to fill with hot water from reception and make tea in your room.” Phill and Louise travelled on KE’s Walking Camino - The Portuguese Way - 2 Weeks | Trip Code: SGPS
If the Camino taught you one lesson, what was it? Louise - “Probably not to rush around so much and value time with friends.”
PILGRIMS CAN OBTAIN A PLENARY INDULGENCE Pilgrims may be eligible for a plenary indulgence, traditionally understood as the remission of sins already confessed, if they visit the Cathedral, pray and attend Mass.
SANTIAGO CELEBRATES ALL YEAR ROUND While the Feast of St James falls on 25th July, the city is alive throughout the Holy Year with religious ceremonies, cultural events and celebrations marking this extraordinary occasion.
HOLY YEAR CREATES AN ATMOSPHERE UNLIKE ANY OTHER
What would you say to anyone dreaming of walking the Camino? Phill - “Just do it – but don’t carry your bags! We were so happy not to be walking with big packs which would have slowed us down.”
During a Holy Year, the Holy Door (Porta Santa) at Santiago Cathedral is ceremonially opened, allowing pilgrims to enter through this sacred entrance. It will open on 31st December 2026 and remain open throughout 2027.
A PILGRIMAGE FOR FOOD LOVERS TOO KE customer Al, who has enjoyed over 40 adventures with KE, was just as impressed by the food and wine as he was by the walking on the Camino. “The food was amazing: octopus and other seafood delicacies, Galician style pork, the Spanish pepper dish, Pimientos de Padrón and lots of potatoes.”
Holy Year attracts pilgrims from around the world, making the Camino more vibrant and atmospheric than ever so it’s well worth booking early to secure your place on the trail!

CULINARY JOURNEYS
Embark on a gastronomic adventure
Food is one of the most powerful ways to remember an adventure. It’s often the meals, not just the miles, that stick with you - the ones that turn a good holiday into stories you tell for years.
Recipe
Ingredients
- 200g spaghetti - 2 thick slices of guanciale (you can use 100g of pancetta or streaky bacon as an alternative) - 2 eggs - 2 handfuls of finely grated Parmesan
Method
There’s no faster way into a culture than through its kitchen; every dish carries a story of the land and people behind it. Take a look at three favourite KE trips that offer an array of tantalising taste-bud experiences, from cooking classes in Mexico to truffle hunting in Northern Italy.
KE’s Gemma (pictured opposite) gave us her simple carbonara recipe for two, inspired by her trips to Italy. It is the perfect dinner solution if you want a tasty dish but are short on time.
- Boil the spaghetti in salted water for 10-12 mins. - Cut the slices of guanciale into bite-sized pieces and gently fry until the fat has rendered down and they are crisp - set aside. - Whisk 2 eggs in a bowl, add grated Parmesan and mix together. - When the spaghetti is al dente, drain it but reserve a cup of the pasta water. - Leave the pasta to cool, then add the egg/Parmesan mixture and gently toss the spaghetti through the mix. - Stir until the cheese has melted and coated the spaghetti. - Add the guanciale pieces and stir. - If the cheese hasn’t melted fully, use some of the reserved pasta water to thin the sauce and bring everything together. - Divide the pasta between two warmed bowls and top with grated Parmesan. Buon appetito!

MENTAL HEALTH
21
How do you relax after all these epic outdoor adventures?! “Just enjoying the Lake District at a slower pace with no agenda and doing what I feel like for a while. Some of my favourite things are wild camping, sunsets, swimming in the waterfalls and more recently paddleboarding.”
Alex quotes: “Being out in the wild offers the precious opportunity to escape the distractions, consolidate our thoughts and gain perspective.”
At KE Adventure, we’ve long believed in the power of being outdoors. Based in England's adventure playground, the Lake District, our staff love to walk, run and cycle the fells at every opportunity, supporting their health and wellbeing - and our holidays are designed with that same spirit, taking you far away from everyday stresses. This is why we've partnered with the charity ‘Mind Over Mountains’ for the past three years. Founded in 2020 by Alex Staniforth and Chris Spray, the charity champions the benefits of hillwalking for mental health, organising wellbeing walks and retreats featuring mindfulness, professional coaching and counselling, alongside funded places for those in need. It’s the perfect fit for who we are. Alex Staniforth is a record-breaking adventurer, speaker, author and coach from Cheshire. Before he turned 19, he had already survived two of the most devastating disasters in Everest’s history, as well as facing adversity at home too - epilepsy, bullying, mental ill health and a stammer. He’s since become the first person to climb all 446 mountains in England and Wales by human power, written two books, raised over £150,000 for charity, and founded Mind Over Mountains to restore wellbeing through nature. Alex was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Chester for his contribution to young people’s mental health in 2025.
KE and Mind Over Mountains
We caught up with Alex and asked him a few quick-fire questions:
Toughest challenge to date “Probably Climb the UK in 2017. Cycling, running, walking and kayaking all 100 UK county tops in 72 days. I was only 22/23 and so I didn't have the experience or endurance I do now. The weather was also awful, and I had lots of big Scottish munros to deal with, without enough fuel or kit. I was basically winging it.”
As part of our fundraising efforts, as well as joining Alex on Helvellyn, the final peak of his 446 peak challenge, members of the KE team have also taken on the Bob Graham Round as a relay (and were delighted that Alex joined us for the first leg) and the National Three Peaks Challenge, raising money for Mind Over Mountains along the way. To learn more about Mind over Mountains and the incredible work they do, you can visit: mindovermountains.org.uk
KE’S OTHER CHARITY PARTNERS
Favourite challenge to date “The 446 Challenge went extremely well, with so much variety, my family and closest friends with me, and without too much suffering! The final 48 hours and summit on Helvellyn is something I’ll never forget. Thanks to KE for being there too!”
Favourite place to escape outdoors “Buttermere in the Lake District is my favourite place in the UK, shortly followed by the Howgills which are quiet, untouched and perfect running hills. The Yorkshire Dales was my favourite part of the 446 Challenge and I’m hoping to explore that more.”
A place you’d really like to explore/bucket list mountain range/other destination “I’d love to visit the orangutans in Borneo or do a road trip through Yosemite. We went to the Dolomites recently which was a big tick!”

KE’S GUIDE TO PERU Peru has a lot to offer, and finding the right trip isn’t always easy. From the iconic Inca Trail and challenging mountain treks to exploring the Amazon by river, there are countless ways to experience the country. However the best adventure isn’t necessarily the most famous one. The right choice depends on what you want from your trip, how challenging you want it to be and how much time you have. You also need to consider the weather, altitude, fitness level, how you’ll get there, permits, accommodation and the time of year. Peru’s geography means conditions can vary dramatically. The Andes have quite distinct wet and dry seasons, with big temperature changes between day and night, while the Amazon can be hot, humid and much wetter. Getting to the start of a trek can also involve internal flights, train or road journeys and time to acclimatise to the altitude, so allowing extra time in your itinerary is beneficial if you can. Permits are another consideration, particularly for the Inca Trail, where access is controlled and daily capacity is limited. It’s therefore advisable to book well in advance for this route to guarantee a permit. KE’s Guide to Peru is designed to help make those decisions easier. From when to go and what to expect, to choosing the right trek and understanding the practicalities, we’ll help you find an adventure that suits you - and help you get prepared before you go.

NEED TO KNOW WHEN TO GO
ALTITUDE
Peru is a year-round destination and the best time to visit depends on what you want to experience. The dry season (April to October), brings cooler temperatures and very little rain, which is perfect for trekking in the Andes.
Parts of Peru sit at very high altitudes which can affect anyone, regardless of how fit you are and if you have been at altitude before. Cusco is often the gateway town for treks in Peru and sits at 3,400m but don’t worry, all KE trips allow for acclimatisation time there before the treks start. The highest point on the Inca Trail is the “Dead Woman's Pass” at 4,200m and the ruins at Choquequirao are at an altitude of 3,050m.
The wet season, (November to March), is warmer and rainier but don’t let that put you off - it’s when the landscapes are at their lushest and most atmospheric, there are fewer crowds and it’s great for the Amazon. NOTE: The Inca Trail is closed every February for maintenance of the trails.
GETTING THERE

INCA TRAIL PERMITS
VISAS If you hold a full British Citizen passport, or are a U.S Citizen and are travelling to Peru as a tourist, then you don’t need to apply for a tourist visa beforehand. You will be granted one on arrival for stays for up to 90 days.
MACHU PICCHU PERMITS There are currently no direct flights from the UK to Peru, so every journey involves at least one stop. Depending on the airline and departure airport, routes typically connect via Madrid, Bogotá, Amsterdam, Atlanta or Montreal, before continuing on to Lima. KE’s usual flight routes travel via Madrid to Lima, or via Bogotá to Cusco. It takes around 16–25 hours depending on the departure airport and connection time. Onward connections to Huaraz, Cusco or Iquitos are available either by a short domestic flight or overland.
There are only 500 permits available each day for trekking along the Inca Trail, of which around 200 are for trekkers, with the remainder allocated to trekking leaders and camp staff. You’ll be pleased to hear that KE includes the cost of the Inca Trail permit in the price of your holiday. The permits normally go on sale in autumn but sell out quickly, especially for peak-season trips. If you want to trek the iconic Inca Trail route, we advise booking your trip early.
You don’t have to trek along the Inca Trail to visit and explore Machu Picchu. KE takes you there on a number of different KE adventures. However, visiting Machu Picchu also requires a permit, and these are limited. KE will organise this for you – you just need to book early before they sell out.

FIVE REASONS TO VISIT COSTA RICA There are some destinations that change the way you see the world. Costa Rica is one of them. Whether it's the warmth of its people, the richness of its landscapes or the way nature shapes everyday life, this small but mighty country has a habit of leaving a lasting impression on everyone who visits. Here are five reasons to discover it for yourself.
KE EXPERT BEX
LEADING THE WAY IN SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL Costa Rica has long been a pioneer of ecotourism, protecting around a quarter of its land through national parks and reserves while investing heavily in conservation. Whether you're staying in an eco-lodge surrounded by rainforest, visiting a community conservation project or exploring protected national parks, you'll see how Costa Rica has built tourism around preserving its landscapes rather than changing them. Here, nature is a way of life, and it’s impossible not to be inspired by the country’s commitment to protecting it.
WALK THROUGH WILD LANDSCAPES Costa Rica offers some of the most varied walking in Central America. One day you'll be trekking lava trails on the slopes of Arenal Volcano, the next wandering through cloud forest in search of the elusive quetzal. You can explore the geothermal landscapes of Rincón de la Vieja, with its mud pools, waterfalls and hot springs, before venturing by boat to the remote Osa Peninsula to walk the trails of Corcovado National Park. From rainforest and dry forest paths to volcanic landscapes and deserted beaches, every day on foot reveals a different side of Costa Rica.
EXPERIENCE WILDLIFE LIKE NEVER BEFORE Few places on Earth bring you closer to wildlife than Costa Rica. Despite its small size, the country is home to around 6% of the world's biodiversity. You can watch sloths doze in the treetops, spot the country's four monkey species swinging through the canopy, seek out tapirs, anteaters, turtles and dolphins and marvel at the abundance of colourful tropical birds. With local KE guides by your side, every walk and boat trip promises unforgettable wildlife encounters.
Speak to one of our experts 017687 73966
“I feel incredibly lucky to have experienced Costa Rica first-hand. It's one of those rare places that genuinely exceeds every expectation. Every day brought something unforgettable, whether it was spotting wildlife I'd only ever dreamed of seeing, walking through breathtaking landscapes or meeting the warmest, most welcoming people. It's a very special country and somewhere I'll never stop recommending to anyone who loves the outdoors.”
EXPLORE ON TWO WHEELS Cycling is one of the best ways to experience the sheer variety of Costa Rica’s landscapes. Ride from the cool mountain highlands to the Pacific coast, crossing the Continental Divide as volcanoes, cloud forests and coffee plantations unfold around you. Rewarding climbs give way to scenic dirt roads and forest tracks, before unforgettable coastal riding along the Nicoya Peninsula. This is an incredible way to explore some of Costa Rica's most spectacular scenery.
ADVENTURE FOR ALL AGES In a world dominated by screens and packed schedules, Costa Rica is the ultimate outdoor playground for families. Glide silently through the winding waterways of Tortuguero National Park, spotting monkeys, turtles and colourful tropical birds. Wander across hanging bridges suspended high above the rainforest canopy, discover the journey from cacao bean to chocolate on a traditional plantation, and experience the thrill of gentle white-water rafting. As night falls, join a guided wildlife walk to uncover the rainforest's hidden treasures. Blending adventure, wildlife and unforgettable shared moments, Costa Rica delivers a family holiday that will inspire explorers of every age.
SUPERB WILDLIFE WATCHING TRIP TO A BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY
“KE’s Walks & Wildlife holiday to Costa Rica was an unforgettable trip. We stayed in some lovely remote places in the rainforest and we saw more wildlife than we ever expected thanks to the enthusiasm and expertise of our guide, José, as well as the local rangers. ANDREW AND JO
Following in the footsteps of Shackleton
PHOTO: KE traveller Andrew in Antarctica | Trip Code PSS
Drawn by the allure of the frozen frontier, KE travellers Andrew and Jo embarked on the Spirit of Shackleton Expedition, a three-week cruise which visits the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula. We caught up with Andrew to ask about their unforgettable experience in one of the world's last great wildernesses.
This was your sixth adventure with KE. How did this polar expedition compare with your previous trips? “All my previous adventures with KE have been in high mountains, so this was my first polar expedition and, in fact, a first cruise for both Jo and I. It had everything I’ve come to expect from KE - superb organisation, a real commitment to safety and the environment, and incredibly knowledgeable guides. Every landing was different and spectacular, and the expedition team were outstanding, keeping us engaged with lectures and expert commentary throughout the voyage.” What made you decide on the Spirit of Shackleton Expedition over other polar cruises? “The Shackleton theme appealed to us because it gave the journey a sense of purpose. We also liked the relatively small scale of the expedition. It felt much more like being part of a close-knit team of explorers than just another passenger on a cruise ship. It turned out to be an excellent choice.”
PHOTO: KE traveller Jo enjoying a hike
Speak to one of our experts 017687 73966
What did it feel like to step onto the Antarctic continent for the first time? “It was humbling. Antarctica was the last continent for us to visit and, without question, the most pristine. The sheer scale of Antarctica, and the realisation of our own insignificance standing on its shores, was breathtaking.” Was there a particular moment during the trip that you'll never forget? “Without doubt, landing at Point Wild on Elephant Island. Standing there and remembering the 22 members of Shackleton's Endurance expedition who survived for more than four months on that tiny spit of land while Shackleton and five others sailed an open boat to South Georgia, in search of help was incredibly moving. We were told that more people summit Everest each year than land at Point Wild, which made us realise just how privileged we were to be there.” What was your favourite day of the trip, and why? “I honestly couldn’t choose a single favourite day because they were all completely different.
POLAR
35
Did the trip change the way you think about the natural world? “It certainly reinforced just how much of the ocean's food chain depends on krill, which thrive in cold polar waters. We often think of life as depending on warm, fertile landscapes, yet so much of the planet’s nutrients ultimately rely on the polar oceans.” What's one thing you wish everyone could experience in Antarctica?
Scan to view all Polar holidays
One day we’d be admiring spectacular geology and intricate ice formations around Spert Island; another, we'd be surrounded by thousands of penguins at Salisbury Plain. Then we’d be exploring the history of human exploitation at Grytviken, or following in Shackleton's footsteps at Point Wild and on the walk from Fortuna Bay to Stromness. Even the sea days were fascinating, with lectures from the expedition team or simply watching the dramatic landscapes glide past from the deck.” Which landscape left the biggest impression on you? “I’m a mountain person at heart, so I’d probably choose the spectacular mountains around the Bismarck Strait, Elephant Island and Clarence Island. They’re dramatic, remote and incredibly beautiful, and they perfectly capture the wild character of Antarctica. Jo loved Salisbury Plain where there are estimated to be 60,000 breeding pairs of king penguins.”
“I’d love everyone to stand on one of those remote shingle beaches and imagine the early explorers arriving, over a century ago in wooden sailing ships, with virtually no charts, no reliable communications, no supply chains and little more than extraordinary courage.” For someone considering their first polar expedition, what would you say to encourage them to take the leap? “Antarctica is probably the only true wilderness on the planet. Simply standing on the edge of that vast white continent is a privilege that relatively few people will ever experience. If you have the opportunity to go, take it - you won't regret it.”
NORTH OR SOUTH? HEAD NORTH FOR… • Polar bears, especially around Svalbard • Northern Lights • Harp, ringed, bearded and hooded seals • Walruses sprawled out on beaches • Seabirds such as puffins, guillemots and kittiwakes
HEAD SOUTH FOR… • Enormous penguin colonies • Weddell, crabeater, leopard and elephant seals • Wandering albatrosses, petrels and skuas • Icebergs in incredible shades of blue • A true remote wilderness

BHUTAN ON FOOT Exploring the Path to Happiness
Since joining KE 13 years ago, Bhutan has been on Tav Lane’s travel radar. Finally, she got the chance to experience it for herself – from the unforgettable climb to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, perched high above the Paro valley, to walking through spectacular mountain landscapes and experiencing Bhutan’s unique culture. Here, Tav shares her journey.

BEAMING BHUTAN “I’m not really a bucket list person – although I have trekked to Everest Base Camp – but ever since I first saw a photo of the Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Bhutan, I’ve had a burning desire to visit. I can’t quite put my finger on what drew me to it, but the way it clings to the mountainside at over 3,000m has always fascinated me, and it most definitely got my travel pulse racing! Bhutan has only been open to travellers since 1973 - which happens to be the year I was born! It wasn’t until 1999 that television and internet access arrived, and even today, some of the country’s most remote regions have no electricity. Trek to Laya village or journey through the remote hamlets on the Snowman Trek, and you’ll pass tiny homesteads where modern technology still feels a world away. It’s this sense of stepping back in time that makes Bhutan so fascinating. It’s one of the few places in the world where life and traditions have remained remarkably unchanged for generations. The Tiger’s Nest Monastery, officially known as Paro Taktsang, is much more than Bhutan’s most recognisable landmark. Its significance comes from the combination of Buddhist legend, centuries of pilgrimage, Bhutanese history and its extraordinary setting. It is believed to be where Guru Rinpoche meditated in the sacred caves in the 8th century after flying there on the back of a tigress. The monastery itself was built in the late 17th century around these caves but was severely damaged by a fire in 1998. Thankfully it has now been painstakingly rebuilt using traditional Bhutanese craftsmanship. It was a magnificent sight, and after years of wanting to visit, I was finally experiencing this extraordinary place for myself.
I travelled on the October departure of the Druk Path Trek, which coincided with the Thimphu Festival. This meant we spent our first week sightseeing and visiting some of Bhutan’s fascinating cultural sites before trekking to Tiger’s Nest and along the Druk Path.
For me, it was the perfect way to do it, as those first few days gave me more time to acclimatise before heading to higher altitudes – as you already land at around 2,200m! On the morning of the hike up to Tiger’s Nest Monastery, we were lucky. The weather was gloriously clear, dry, hot and sunny, which meant the path was mostly dry. The trek up to the monastery is relatively straightforward, although reasonably challenging, and a mixture of sandy, dry paths, muddy sections and steps. There’s a café about halfway up, around 1.5 hours into the trek, which makes for a welcome rest stop and has incredible views of the monastery.
37
The trek down was much easier than the trek up (you’d like to think so), and we were also dropping in altitude so breathing became that bit easier, although we still had to tackle plenty of steep steps. All in all, it took around six hours, including plenty of nice, long breaks. It was a rewarding hike - and I finally made it to the Tiger’s Nest. It was worth every step.” Tav travelled on KE’s Druk Path Trek | Trip Code: DRK
From there, it gets a little tougher, with around 700 steep steps to descend – and then ascend in places - before you reach the monastery. This is where you have no choice but to take it slow and steady (thank goodness for trekking poles!) as you are well and truly at 3,000m – and your body knows it. Passing a glorious sacred waterfall, the last climb up to monastery is steep but reaching it on foot made the arrival even more rewarding.
BHUTAN THROUGH THE LENS
After trekking to the iconic Tiger’s Nest, Tav and the KE group headed into the mountains along the Druk Path – an ancient trading route that once provided an important link between Paro and Thimphu. Along the way, they encountered beautiful mountain landscapes, remote camps and glimpses of everyday Bhutanese life. We had a tour of three of the temples, although there are more – not all of them are open to the public. From the terrace, we had an uninterrupted view across the Paro Valley, stretching as far as the eye could see. It was here that I really appreciated just how heavily forested the country is. Bhutan is incredibly green, with dense, lush subtropical valleys giving way to pine and rhododendron forests high in the mountains. This abundance of forest is one of the reasons Bhutan can be described as carbon negative – one of only three countries in the world with this status.
In her photo gallery, Tav shares some of her favourite moments from the journey, both on the trail and beyond. In her video, she takes us behind the scenes, talking about life on the trail, camping under Himalayan skies, experiencing the local culture and the many moments that make this journey so unforgettable. After trekking Nepal’s spectacular Manaslu Circuit, David, one of KE’s Adventure Travel Consultants, reflects on his unforgettable journey. From towering Himalayan peaks and remote mountain villages to the exhilarating challenge of crossing the Larkya La Pass, David shares a few moments that stood out most from this incredible adventure. “The Around Manaslu Trek is truly breathtaking right from the start. I remember the first day of trekking clearly, following the river as it gradually climbed through the valley, passing rapids and countless waterfalls towering above us. I lost count of the number of times I thought, ‘There’s another waterfall!’ - there really are dozens of them, each one more impressive than the last.
It was just the start of an incredible trek where the scenery changed constantly as we steadily gained altitude. After the first few days, the Himalayan giants began to dominate the skyline, and suddenly we were surrounded by snowcovered 6,000m and 7,000m peaks. Out of the midst of these came Manaslu, at 8,163m - the eighth highest mountain in the world. The first sighting of Manaslu was a real highlight, and to later be able to stand beneath this incredible peak was an unparalleled experience. I couldn't quite believe the sheer scale of it! As we continued to trek higher, over the next few days the views just kept getting better. Waking early one morning to watch the sun rise over Manaslu from the terrace of our lodge in Samagaon,
39
is a memory that will stay with me forever. Another unforgettable moment was crossing the Larkya La Pass (5,135m). The steady ascent and carefully planned acclimatisation days meant we felt well prepared for the challenge. Reaching the summit cairn and colourful prayer flags at the top of the pass was an experience like no other, and the overwhelming feeling of achievement is something I'll never forget.” David travelled on KE’s Around Manaslu Trek | Trip Code: MAN

North of Pokhara, the Annapurna region is home to some of Nepal’s highest and most spectacular mountains. While many trekking routes are well known, its remote south-eastern corner remains little visited. Starting from Besishahar, the route follows scenic ridgelines, camping in spectacular locations far from the crowds.

For seasoned trekkers, Dolpo remains one of Nepal’s most remote and captivating regions. High, dry and largely untouched by modern development, it feels a world away from the country's better-known trekking routes.
The reward is the ascent of Rambrong West Summit (4,300m), one of the finest viewpoints in the Himalayas.

Kerrie uncovers one of the Himalayas’ best-kept secrets
What comes to mind when you think of India? Crowded streets, bustling markets, vibrant colours and the iconic Taj Mahal? On KE’s In the Shadow of Nanda Devi adventure (Trip Code: NAN), Operations Executive Kerrie discovered a side of India that few travellers ever experience - a peaceful, untouched landscape where you can trek for days without encountering any other travellers. As Kerrie explains: “The biggest difference between the Indian Himalayan region and other Himalayan destinations is how undeveloped it remains. MILESTONE BIRTHDAY TRIPS Celebrating in extraordinary places
WHAT A WAY TO TURN 50!
“Despite only knowing the group for less than 36 hours, they all helped to make my birthday one to remember. The literal 'icing on the cake' was the surprise birthday cake and 'Happy Birthday' sung in six different languages after dinner! ” Solo traveller Emily on her 2nd KE trip, Finland Wilderness Snowshoe Adventure | Trip Code: WSF
Why do some people, on the cusp of turning 40, 50, 60 - or even 70 choose an adventure over a party? Because milestone birthdays deserve more than a dinner that blurs into all the others. At KE, we've spent four decades helping people celebrate the moments that matter most. We asked some of our travellers why they chose an escape to mark their milestone and what they discovered along the way.

DONNA TIMMIS
Donna marks her half-century with an epic achievement Not many people would consider running the world's highest marathon a celebration, but for Devon-based Donna Timmis, it was exactly how she wanted to mark her 50th. We caught up with her to find out why she chose the ultimate adventure over a party… What made you choose the Everest Marathon as your way of marking your 50th? “I’ve always been drawn to physical challenges and travel, but the timing made this one especially meaningful. The Everest Marathon is always held on 29 May, the day before my birthday, making it the perfect way to celebrate turning 50.”

Having done Teenage Toubkal with KE in 2019, did that first adventure plant the seed for this one? “I’ve travelled widely, but taking my children on the Teenage Toubkal adventure in 2019 introduced me to KE. The trip was so well organised that I knew they’d be the ideal company to support me on the Everest Marathon.” How did you prepare for such a demanding challenge? “Most of my training focused on marathon running, alongside regular strength sessions in the gym. I also watched plenty of YouTube videos about the Everest Marathon, which helped me understand the course and prepare mentally for the challenge.” We heard the team surprised you with a birthday cake on the mountain – can you tell us about that moment? “It was a wonderful surprise, especially as we were staying in a remote village where I never expected a birthday cake. Knowing the porters had carried it all day from Namche Bazaar - and that it arrived intact - made the gesture even more special.”

Andrew, what was your reaction when Tom and Scott told you how you'd be spending your 60th birthday?
The Gift of Quality Time
Andrew: “It was very surreal; I could not believe what they had done. They printed out the itinerary and presented it to me with a birthday card. It took a few minutes to sink in and realise what we were actually going to do.”
TOM TILEY When Tom and Scott Tiley wanted to mark their father Andrew's 60th birthday with something truly special, they skipped the restaurant reservation and booked an adventure in the Swiss Alps instead. Presenting the itinerary in a birthday card, the three of them set off on a seven-day self-guided trek and came back already planning the next one. Tom, why did you and your brother Scott choose an adventure in the Alps over a more traditional birthday celebration for your dad's 60th? Tom: “As a family we've always been into fitness and keeping healthy. As we've got older it's difficult to make sure we spend good quality time together that doesn't involve eating or drinking enormous amounts. The short jaunt over the Alps meant we could spend some decent time together and catch up on life, whilst admiring the stunning scenery.”
What was your favourite moment from the trip together? Tom: “There was a particular moment when we stopped for lunch on a plateau on the way up to the highest point of the trip. We still had a long way to go for the day, and we had come so far already. We were on our own amongst the mountains enjoying some simple grub and feeling grateful for the environment and each other's company.” Was there a moment on the trip that felt like a true celebration? Andrew: “Getting on the plane at Bristol Airport with the anticipation of the challenge, to getting off the plane seven days later. It was just seven days of pure celebration. It was the best trekking experience of my life and obviously
doing it with my sons was something very special. It’s something I will never forget, in fact the screen saver on my phone is the three of us in the mountains so I relive the moments every time I pick up my phone.” Tom, after seeing your dad take on this challenge, would you consider doing something similar for your own milestone birthday? Tom: “Absolutely. We all loved it. We were all busy looking for the next trip and we hadn’t even finished this one. It's the big 4-0 for me in a year's time so we could be knocking on your door very soon.” Would you recommend marking a milestone birthday with an adventure to others your age? Andrew: “Absolutely, what an adventure! Obviously consider your fitness level to match the challenge, pick the right company to book through, which my sons did, and then enjoy the best moments of your life.”

You have travelled all over the world, including leading many trips for KE since 2008. What is it about Africa that inspired this adventure? “Despite working as a leader for over 20 years, I’d previously only led treks and cycling trips to North Africa. Southern Africa has always been a destination I wanted to visit, not only for the incredible wildlife but also for iconic natural wonders like Victoria Falls and the Okavango Delta.” Why did you decide to do this trip? “I used to work in the KE office and could remember seeing the photos after the very first departure in 2008. I always felt Victoria Falls to Cape Town held a special place as one of KE’s classic journeys, and it certainly did not disappoint!”
What is it about being on a bike that you love? “I’ve always enjoyed the simplicity of bike-eat-sleep and repeat. It’s one of the best ways to travel through a country.” The route spans across four countries - Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. How do the landscapes change as the journey unfolds? “Every day is so varied. The colours, the wildlife and the topography are totally different. The itinerary has some superb riding, as well as time to explore off the bikes.” What kind of wildlife did you see? “Whilst we were riding we saw African wild dogs, elephants, zebra, giraffes, wart hogs and loads of chameleons basking
10 on the roads! The boat trips were also great for spotting hippos, crocodiles, Cape buffalo, springbok and a host of kingfishers and other bird life.”

Trails Through Time
As well as cycling, you do lots of different activities on this trip including safari drives in the Moremi reserve and walking amongst Sossusvlei’s famous sand dunes. What did you enjoy most about the varied itinerary? “The boat trip in the Okavango Delta was very exciting, but equally, the contrast in colours was amazing. My favourite parts were riding through the Namib Desert, climbing up Dune 45 and crossing the Tropic of Capricorn.” Every great adventure has a defining moment. What was yours on this trip? “Sharing the experience with an old school friend, a fun group and three excellent local leaders.” What three words would you say to describe this adventure?

SAFARI
47
What advice would you give to anyone going on their first safari? “Embrace every moment, expect the unexpected, and don’t worry if things don’t always go to plan - that’s all part of the adventure. Be patient and know that unforgettable safari moments happen when you least expect them. Make sure to put your cameras and phones down every now and then to simply soak it all in.”
What’s next on your bucket list?
What was the most unexpected thing about being out in the wild? “For us, it was how quickly we came to enjoy the simplicity of being out in the wild. Living with just the essentials made every day feel like an adventure, and even using the ‘bushy bushy’ toilet (a freshly dug hole in the ground) became part of the fun! It was amazing how something that seemed so daunting at first soon felt completely natural and became such an exciting part of our trip. In hindsight, we wouldn’t have had it any other way.”
What sounds from the trip do you think will stay with you? “Listening to elephants calmly pulling and chewing reeds in the Chobe River was amazingly peaceful, while the fierce confrontation between a group of female lions was a powerful reminder that the wild can be both beautiful and brutal. Hearing the gentle ‘clip clop’ of giraffes’ hooves as they strolled within two meters of our safari vehicle was a particular highlight. This memory will stay with us forever, reminding us how incredibly lucky we were to get so close to these fascinating animals.”
What was your favourite time of day on safari and why? “Without a doubt, the early mornings and late afternoons. Early mornings were incredibly peaceful, with the bush just beginning to wake up and the chance to see predators still active before the heat of the day. Late afternoons were equally magical, as the light changed the landscape and the animals became more active again. There was something special about watching the bush come to life at both ends of the day.”
What was the most memorable photograph or video you captured during the trip, and what's the story behind it? “Our most memorable photograph was of a pack of African wild dogs that seemed to appear out of nowhere on a late afternoon game drive. As we watched, they began communicating with a lone dog on the opposite side of the water, calling back and forth in a fascinating display of teamwork and social behaviour. Capturing it on camera means we’ll always have a reminder of just how magical our safari was.”
“We have a wildlife obsession, so it’s only fitting that our bucket-list adventures follow suit - and Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda is right at the top for us!” Follow their journeys on Instagram at @shaneandsamtravels

A SAHARAN DIARY
FOOD AND CULTURE
Written by Ven Seshadri from Toronto GREAT DESERT TREK
This is how KE traveller Ven from Toronto described his experience when he joined KE’s Edge of the Sahara Trek in Morocco. “During four days hiking in the Sahara, you’ll see the vast open spaces and the shapes, colours and textures of the desert. The highlight is the evening of the second trekking day, when you climb up the huge dune to watch the sunset and absorb the incredible views of the desert. Be sure to spend a day in Marrakech, exploring the medina and all of the souks and narrow alleys there.”
Trek Day 2: “We head west from our first camp, once again following landmarks to navigate. We start getting to bigger and bigger sand dunes and into the area known as the ‘erg’ (sea of land rippled with dunes), this one being the Erg EzZahar. This is what we came to see! The trek to the second campsite is relatively short (five hours) but we rest up after lunch for the evening program. At around 6pm we head into the dunes of Zahar, eventually climbing to the top of the biggest one in the area - a permanent 200m-high dune - from where we can watch the sunset. After the sunset, we climb back down and head back to the camp where the clear night sky provides an opportunity for some astrophotography.”
Get a taste of Ven’s adventure with his daily diary and photos from the trek.
Trek Day 1: “Trek south with our guide, three crew and five camels from Mhamid through a small village and out into the desert, eventually heading west. We start seeing small sand dunes here. The desert is essentially wide open and trackless, but our guide navigates using known landmarks. We stop for lunch under a big tree (trees are rare enough out here that their locations are well known) before continuing in the afternoon to the holy shrine of Sidi Naji. Our campsite is nearby.”

Trek Day 3: “We head north out of our camp and reach the River Draa (which is dry). We continue along for the day among the acacia and tamarisk trees. Right during our stop for lunch under a massive tamarisk tree, a sandstorm kicks up and continues on into the evening; the full Sahara experience. The campsite was near a public operational well, which the camels appreciate.”
Trek Day 4: “Start out from our camp and head east, continuing along the River Draa. Several hours in, we leave the river and start seeing palm trees and areas that could clearly support some seasonal agriculture. We get back to Mhamid mid-afternoon and end our trek back at the Berber camp. The last day is spent driving back across the Atlas Mountains to Marrakech from Ouled Driss, with dinner at a restaurant in the Medina.”
Morocco's culture is shaped by centuries of Berber, Arab and French influence. This heritage is woven into everyday life, from the call to prayer echoing across rooftop terraces to the communal ritual of sharing mint tea, poured from a height as a mark of hospitality. Cuisine is central to the experience too and the flavours will tease your tastebuds: slow-cooked tagines, freshly baked bread, colourful salads and fragrant spices offer a genuine taste of Moroccan life at every stop.
WHAT TO SEE Marrakech is unmissable, with its vibrant souks, atmospheric streets and beautiful, peaceful gardens. But venture beyond the city and you’ll discover another side of Morocco - wilder, quieter and rich in adventure. The High Atlas Mountains, home to Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak, offer spectacular trails through remote villages, terraced valleys and dramatic gorges. The Sahara offers the chance to camp beneath a blanket of stars, far from the glow of city lights. Along the Atlantic coast, the laidback port of Essaouira charms with its blue fishing boats, sea breezes and famously fresh seafood.
GETTING THERE Getting there is refreshingly simple, direct flights from a growing number of UK airports reach Morocco in around four hours.

TWO GENERATIONS, ONE ADVENTURE Discovering Slovenia on the trip that had it all
Scan to view all family holidays
Gavin, from the KE office, along with his wife Vicky, and his daughters Cara (11) and Mae (9), swapped their usual family beach holiday for a thrilling, activity-packed week in the Julian Alps of Slovenia. We asked them to share their memories.
Gavin’s Story
Did you get much free time to relax?
“We had an unforgettable week of pure enjoyment and relaxation - no work, school or chores for any of us, and we had so much fun together as a family apart from the points in the day when the kids went off to have more fun with their friends. I’d recommend a KE holiday for a family of any size, there’ll be something for everyone, and the leaders take care of everything (whatever the weather), so you can sit back and relax - until the activities start!”
“Yes, it was a holiday of two halves: after a day of, for example, tobogganing and rafting, we’d relax in the pools and whirlpool at our hotel. On the free day we explored the lovely resort town of Kranjska Gora - 10 minutes away on the free shuttle bus. At the end of the day we enjoyed crashing out in our comfy rooms.”
We asked Gavin...
“Watching them zip-wire across a valley without a second thought (and then following them). We’ve never done it before, but our guides/leaders were so reassuring that they just threw themselves into it.”
What did you like most about being on holiday with other families? “Our girls loved having other kids to hang out with. Eight was a perfect number for them to get to know each other, eat together, splash together, play pool and table football together and, crucially, all be able to fit onto a giant paddleboard. It was also nice for us parents to relax together in the evenings and to be able to chat with our partners while the kids were off somewhere in their group.” Speak to one of our experts 017687 73966
What was a special moment about being in Slovenia with Cara and Mae?
What advice would you give to other parents if they are thinking of a KE family holiday? “Consider what activities will be most enjoyable for you and your family. Ours don’t like hiking much but love water, so this was perfect.”
FAMILY ADVENTURES
Cara’s Story
We asked Cara and Mae…
“Hi, I’m Cara! I love hanging out with my friends, dancing and seeing new places, so it was so much fun to be on a more active holiday than usual with my parents. My favourite activity was the adventure park because the course started off small, and you could learn what to do. Then it got higher and more exciting. I also loved the climbing because, when I got to the top, it was really fun to lean back and let the ropes bounce me down.”
What was your favourite food ?
51
“Everything! It was a mix of things which felt Italian, like pasta, and some things we've not tried before - stews and sausages. There was always ice-cream!” What was your most memorable moment with your dad? “Zip wiring, rafting and tobogganing, we were usually ahead of Dad though!” What did you like about the hotel?
Mae’s Story “Hi, I’m Mae. I love swimming, gaming and paddleboarding. There was much more planned on this holiday than other ones we go on, which was great. My favourite activity was rafting. Bits of the river were bumpy, but this was really great. I also liked swimming and paddleboarding on Lake Bled. The lake was very clear and not cold. I also loved the rock climbing. It was my first time doing it, and I was nervous, but it was great.”
“We liked the room where we had our own bunk beds and could slide the door closed between us and our parents.” What would you say to other parents going on a KE family holiday? “Pick the activities your kids like and make sure you have a rest day by the pool.” Gavin and his family travelled on KE’s Slovenian Family Adventure Julian Alps | Trip Code: FAS
We had a fabulous holiday “We had a fantastic week. From the activities to the food and the team looking after us, we loved it all. Our teenagers had a ball, spending lots of time in the sea and hanging out with the other children. They also loved the evening activities and getting to spend time with the volunteers on the farm, whether it was playing on the giant rope swing or designing new henna tattoos, that really helped make the holiday one of their best yet. Every day felt a bit like a new adventure, and always ending up at the beach for a refreshing dip was just perfect. We loved sitting out on the decking, enjoying the peace, quiet and beautiful countryside views. The accommodation was all the more impressive having seen how it was built - pretty much by hand! It felt like we'd been invited to stay with family and Jonathan and Vio
were central to that. Vio is an excellent cook - and host - and we ate like kings every day, be it breakfast, packed lunch or dinner.” Anne on her 1st KE trip, Family Adventures in the Algarve | Trip Code: FPA

MEET OUR EXPERT TOUR LEADERS PHOTO: André Pontes, Leader on Levada Trails and Peaks of Madeira | Trip Code: MWW
BRUNO SOBERÓN AND CRISTINA LEIRA – SPAIN
UDEN SHERPA – INDIA
MAŠA ODAR – SLOVENIA
Bruno and his partner Cris have been leading KE’s trekking and family adventures across the Picos de Europa since 2022 and love sharing their passion for the mountains with customers.
Uden has been leading KE adventures across India for almost 20 years. He was voted our Leader of the Year in 2024 and runner-up in 2025.
Maša has been leading for KE since 2022 and was a runner-up for Leader of the Year in her very first season; she now leads multiple trips across Slovenia.
What do you love most about leading a KE trip? “The destinations and trips that KE has curated along the years are amazing. People who join on these trips have always been very compatible, which makes the trips more enjoyable for all and easy for us to coordinate them.”
What do you love most about leading a KE trip? “I lead a variety of KE trips in Slovenia, but my favourite is the six-day Across the Julian Alps to Triglav trek. I love the simplicity of life in the mountains - no cars, no rush, no crowds. We often think we need so many things, but when you have to carry everything on your back all day, you quickly realise what really matters. You pack your backpack once, make sure everything is back inside each morning and head off to the next mountain hut. Simple.”
What do you love most about leading a KE trip? “I think one of the things I love most about leading a KE trip is the strong bonds that are created in the mountains. During these journeys, we become like a family for an entire week. We share experiences, support each other, and become a team where we challenge ourselves together while also enjoying the moments along the way.” Is there an experience guests always love on the trips? “One thing that guests always love about the trips is how surprised they are by Picos de Europa. Many people arrive without really knowing what to expect, and by the end of the trip they often tell me that the area has exceeded their expectations.” What is the best thing about visiting the Picos? “The best thing about Picos is that it still feels wild and genuine. You can enjoy spectacular scenery, discover its wildlife, learn about its history and traditions, and still find quiet places where you feel connected with nature.” Speak to one of our experts 017687 73966
What are your favourite moments on the trips? “It has always been nice to meet new people from other parts of the world and learn about them and their experiences. When we see guests enjoying the trip, it is always satisfying. A special moment is when the weather clears and we see the majestic, beautiful mountains.” Is there an experience guests always love on the trips? “Guests always appreciate the enthusiasm of our crew and the delicious food they prepare. They also enjoy the local knowledge we provide, along with books on the region's flora, fauna and birdlife. Celebrating guests’ birthdays, taking part in local festivals and ending with a farewell dinner, beers and a bonfire with the team, are all moments that guests love.”
What’s a highlight of the trip for you and the guests? “My favourite moments are seeing people's faces when we reach the peak. Especially when you cannot exactly see where you are going and then the view just opens up all of a sudden.” What is the best thing about visiting Slovenia? “Mountains, of course! You don’t have to hike all day to find amazing views, and guests are always impressed by how clean our country is too.”
OUR EXPERT LEADERS
Guiding you every step of the way Behind every unforgettable KE adventure is an exceptional local leader – someone who knows the landscape intimately, understands its culture and can reveal the places and stories that most travellers might otherwise miss. It’s no surprise that so many KE guests return time and again, often inspired as much by the people they meet along the way as the places they discover. From hidden corners and local traditions to unforgettable encounters, our leaders bring each destination to life, turning a great journey into a truly immersive experience.
We caught up with five of our muchloved local leaders to discover what they love most about their work, the places they call home, and the moments they most enjoy sharing with KE travellers.
DANIEL ABI KHALIL – OMAN
Tito began leading KE adventures in Costa Rica last year and has already become a firm favourite with guests on our walking and family holidays.
Daniel leads KE’s Oman trekking adventure and consistently receives five-star reviews for sharing the landscapes, culture and hospitality of his beautiful country.
What’s your favourite moment on the trip? “I have several favourite moments, but one that stands out is the time we spend together after the activities. When we sit down, chat about what we've seen, talk through the day’s route, and take time to share our experiences I find that special.” What do guests get most excited about on the trips? “I think what people enjoy most is seeing animals in their natural habitats. It's impressive to be driving along the road and come across monkeys, or a sloth, or some other animal right there on the roadside or even at our hotels.”
LEADER OF THE YEAR

JOSE ‘TITO’ TORTOS – COSTA RICA
What do you love most about leading a KE trip? "What I love most is the itinerary design - the tours include walks through rural areas, which I find very special. I also really appreciate the support that KE provides, both for the guests and for me as a guide. And I value the flexibility they offer, which allows me to keep learning and discovering new things along the way.”
57
What do you love most about leading a KE trip? “KE values and convictions concerning safety, sustainability, hygiene... KE trips meet today’s responsible tourism requirements.” What do you enjoy most about sharing Oman with guests? “My favourite moment is when the group is enjoying their experiences. Their positivity is infectious and makes you want to do more. An example is when a guest says thank you for a lovely day. This is the biggest reward and it means I did well.” What is the best thing about visiting Oman? “Oman is a very safe and welcoming country with an amazing and diverse landscape. In a short distance, you can travel between deserts, seas and mountains. The deserts are colourful, the seas are warm and the mountains have extraordinary rock formations.”
Each year we ask our travellers to tell us why their leader should win our Leader of the Year competition. Pictured above is Hoang Ha whose feedback was exemplary, with every feedback form scoring him a perfect 10/10. Hoang leads KE’s Vietnam North to South Adventure | Trip Code: VNS
“THE LEGEND!” “What can I say? Our adventure with our guide Andre was, as we say in Canada, "AWESOME!" A passionate, knowledgeable Madeiran with a wicked sense of humour. ” Kelly on her 6th KE Trip | Levada Trails and Peaks of Madeira | Trip Code: MWW
