A new model for rapid-deployment emergency housing that produces flourishing communities and long-term resilience.

Week 1-4 Site is selected by FEMA and City Officials. Rapid Housing is deployed and climate migrants are housed.

Week 4 Triage Planning Center

Rapid-Deployment Emergency Housing Once the site is chosen, the streets are assessed to determine which has the most potential for commercial and retail space. This location is then targeted for the Rapid-Deploymen Emergency Housing construction. Why? Because ground level underneath the CLT frame holding up these units is serving dual purpose - in weeks 1-4 it is space for storage and cars, then by the end of the project at month 8-12, this space is transformed into rentable commercial space.

Triage Planning Center While the emergency housing is being built and people are moving in, a section of the ground floor space is built out into a temporary traige space for FEMA, city officials, Community leaders, residents, and climate migrants to meet. This planning center is crucial in ensuring the next 2-6 months of permanent housing construction meets the needs of all stakeholders in order to build community.

Clerestory and skylight to ensure natural light into deeper space.

This space will be transformed into commercial space at the end of the project, for small businesses or offices to build out and occupy.

Pre-Fab Design Methodology As per the design process, the 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom unit plans are pre-designed and standard across the implimentation of the project. These units are flexible for any orientation to respond to both heat gain and daylighting gain. This flexibility comes from their construction type: pre-fabricated wall panels. Each wall panel follows the column grid, dimensioned at 12ft tall and 10ft wide, combining to create the two pre-designed floor plans.

Type B: Small Permanent Housing 1x 1x 2

Pre-Fab Wall Units Prefab Timber frame walls are trucked into the site. Windows are inserted based on the Cove.Tool results for daylighting and EUI. From there, the architect orders the walls shipped dirrectly to the site.

Type C: Large Permanent Housing 2x 2x 4

Final Phase Complete.

Affordable Housing Expanded.

Urban Blight Addressed.

Flourishing Community Expanded.

Each unit contains a dedicated “green core”.

These cores bring daylighting and passive ventilation into each unit, provide opportunities to grow plants, allow secure and private ways to bring the outdoor spaces in, and create a unique amenity that isn’t typically associated with affordable housing.

The design utilizes a double roof strategy to facilitate airflow between the shade structure and a heavilyinsulated flat roof built into each unit. From our iteration in the cove.tool, we found that this significantly lowered EUI compared to conventional pitched roofs.

Horizontal and vertical circulation for the muti-unit buildings are located on the south side, providing deep sun shading, and allowing the north faces of each building to contain the majority of the project’s windows. Unit plans are designed to be flexible enough to accomodate this environmental strategy without impacting daylighting or views.

Level 1 Nonstructural louvers throughout the site are reclaimed from partially torn down, condemned, or burned houses (right) that surround the area— many of which are full of a high quantity of like-new lumber that is typically scrapped because it no longer meets the standards for structural framing.
