Jazz 91 Spotlight on Ron Pelletier As a drummer in Southern California, while working with Dave Pike at Hungry Joe’s on the Pacific shore in Huntington Beach, Ron Pelletier (pictured) met a DJ at L.A.’s flagship Jazz station KBCA-FM, who had come by the club. Dennis Smith was doing the mid-day shift with Gerald Wilson during which Gerald was conducting interviews with many Jazz greats.

Ron says: “I took Smith up on an invitation to come by the station, more than a handful of times, sitting in awe watching Gerald and Dennis play the music and conduct the interviews. I knew then that I would love to get into radio”.

Fast forward a couple years…again while on the bandstand, this time with Sam Most…Tom Schnabel, the music director at KCRW in Santa Monica, dropped into the club. Ron says: “I asked Tom how I could get on the air. One thing led to another and before long I was doing shows on KCRW. The format was called “Strictly Jaz”, and my focus was to do interviews to get the players on the air to not only entertain but to educate. The first was Vinny Golia, the second Joe Williams and that started it for me”.

Through a grant from Musicians Union Local 47 in Hollywood, Ron also started to produce live performances broadcast from KPFK (KPFA’s sister station in L.A.) with a signal that reached the San Diego border. The station had a loft space large enough to fit an audience of 200 or so for the weekly Saturday afternoon performances. At the same time Ron was awarded an N.E.A. grant to bring Jazz artists into the classrooms in South Central L.A. to play for them, to talk to them, and simply to expose the kids to a rich part of their cultural heritage. Ron moved to SF for an opportunity to work at KJAZ in the early to mid-80s. He was also on the air at KCSM before joining the board of Jazz In Flight, producing weekly shows as well as an annual world class festival whose namesake was Bay Area drummer Eddie Moore. Ron says: “I’ve since been devoting a great deal of time to preserving a literal mountain of analog taped conversations with so many historical Jazz figures from the entire spectrum of the music…converting these old tapes to a digital format to more easily share them via all the new technologies available to us now. And I, of course, feel extremely fortunate to be on the air at one of the very few remaining 24 hour Jazz stations left in the country”.

Swinging the Band: The Pops Foster Story He said of himself, “I’m just another bass player trying to make a living.” Starting out as a riverboat tuba player, George ‘Pops’ Foster (pictured) went on to help revolutionize the sound of jazz rhythm. In his seven-decade career he played with everyone from Louis Armstrong to Charlie Parker.

Portraying the New Orleans jazzman, actor Vernel Bagneris joins The Jim Cullum Jazz Band to tell the story of New Orleans bass pioneer George ‘Pops’ Foster.

In this program, we trace Armstrong's development as a trumpeter and reflect on his contributions.

Louis Armstrong: The Singer After establishing himself as an innovative jazz instrumentalist, Louis Armstrong was given a chance to sing... and turned the jazz world upside down. His singing voice would become one of the world's most recognized and enjoyed in jazz and popular music.

6/15 Charlie Parker, Part 1 Charles "Yardbird" Parker (pictured) was a self-taught innovator who could fly higher and cut deeper than any other musician of his day. This program focuses on "Bird" the improviser, and traces his instrumental virtuosity from his early days in Kansas City to his bebop experiments in New York to his ill-fated trip to Los Angeles in 1945.

Best of the Cuban Big Bands

Bandleader and composer Paquito D’Rivera (pictured) guides us through a tour of the Cuban composers of his homeland. He brings a Latin percussion section—Horacio Hernandez (drums), Richard Padron (guitar) and Pedro Martinez (percussion)—to add the five beat rhythm to the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Wendell Pierce hosts.

6/30 Nursery Song Swing The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra try their hand at another book of classics—these standards include Chicken Rhythm, Three Blind Mice and Liza Jane. Wynton and the orchestra give a big band twist to children classics. Guest soloist 16 year old Grace Kelly (alto saxophone), 17 year old Carl Majeau (tenor saxophone and clarinet) and 13 year old Jonathan Russell (violin) join Wynton on stage. It’s the perfect way to end the school year and start the summer.

In this encore presentation, McPartland and Terkel quiz each about their lives and share memories about their favorite composers and musicians.

Sherrie Maricle (pictured) is a musician of many talents—she's a drummer, an educator, a writer and a band leader. She's also the beating heart of the all-female big band the Diva Jazz Orchestra. Maricle brings along a few women from her group—pianist Tomoko Ohno and bassist Noriko Ueda—to perform Groove Merchant and Ellington's Squeeze Me.

I mpending T ower M ove Speaking of spreading the love, we have a big change coming to KCSM this month.

Construction on the campus is in full swing on the new student center here at the college... which means that it is time for the FM tower to move! The tower is not moving far, but the chances are pretty good that we'll need to take the jazz station off the air for a short period of time. We've designed the move to minimize the downtime, and will be scheduling any interruption of service for the wee hours of the morning.

The good news? All of the transmission line, antennas and tower will be new! We will also be installing a backup antenna (which we currently lack), which will ensure that our jazz signal never skips a beat. We'll be updating our progress on our website, so make sure to check in from time to time...or give our engineers a call at (650) 524-6955.
