KCS Essentials September 2019

Page 1

LET’S GET SOCIAL

Have your checklist at the ready; the end of summer rush to kit out your classroom for the new term is here!

The Autumn term is always an exciting time of year, with lots of new faces - not to mention the familiar ones too! –and a high level of optimism and excitement to get started and to meet the latest students and classes.

Having taught secondary education for 15 years, the Autumn term was always my favourite; the dark nights, the high winds and rain (can you tell I was a Geography teacher?), and the sudden realisation that the summer holiday is but a distant memory! The smell of fresh exercise books, new pens, that fully stocked cupboard as time hurtles towards the October half term: this is what being a teacher is all about!

Soon, however, you’ll notice the empty pens, the dried out whiteboard markers, the chewed ends of whiteboards (Primary school teachers – you know what I’m on about!). That excitement soon starts to dwindle with every missing lid, but it doesn’t have to be that way this year! As the Business Development Manager for KCS, I am always happy and on-hand to help my fellow teachers to stay on top of their classroom ‘must-haves.’ Our KCS Essentials has all the latest offers and products to get you through the tough times, as well as the good. So, have a read through, jot down what you need and either visit the website or give us a call to place your order. I wish you all a

and successful start to the new academic year.

Speak soon, Ben.

In a previous life, Ben Chapman was a Geography teacher, but now works for KCS as a Business Development Manager, and is a leading advocate for our apprenticeship program.

SAILING

THE WAVES OF CREATIVITY

A school in the heart of Medway showcased their students’ artwork in an exhibition inspired by Kent’s famous river!

Back in July, English Martyrs’ Primary School of Strood, Kent, showcased work from all their pupils at the Historic Dockyard Chatham this summer, and the history and environment surrounding the River Medway was their main source of inspiration.

Working alongside Marc Woodhead, Gallery Educator at the National Gallery, London, the children were challenged to create a fleet of ships of all shapes and sizes, to be displayed on a collaborative piece of art; a replica of the famous river itself.

“The children all loved the project” says Marc. “We mainly worked on constructing boats in our boat workshop – I designed a template for years two to six – and it really worked on their fine motor skills. We then decorated the boats with different coloured paper, patterns…they named them, added sails. There was a lot of imagination on show”

Having created a birds-eye view of the River Medway on the floor of the gallery, the boats now sail on the water of the river – all 200 of them!

“My vision was to produce an exhibition where all 200 children in English Martyrs’ School could exhibit their work” says Annie Kemp, Year One teacher and mastermind behind the exhibition. “It was really important that everybody was represented, that was our main driving force really” she continues.

“It was also important that our children’s work was exhibited in a professional environment, and what better place to celebrate the River Medway than at The Historic Dockyard!”

Annie hopes that this exhibition will lead other schools in and around Kent to create their own exhibitions; something that Head teacher Catherine Thacker wholeheartedly agrees with - “This is an opportunity for our children to recognise the potential of their art, which is fantastic, and I hope this is an inspiration to other schools to do the same.”

The older pupils of the school were further inspired by spending a day at the Historic Dockyard, where they created their own ships’ emblems using an embossing technique, were taught about the history of ship building, the Age of Sail and of modern naval ships which have been constructed in Chatham.

Why paper towels are first choice for hand drying

Damp hands spread 500 times more germs than dry hands*. The most effective way to reduce the spread of bacteria is to use paper towels, because they dry hands fast and effectively. Paper towels with highly absorbent qualities and multiple plies (layers) are able to absorb up to three times more liquid than paper towels with only one ply.

Going Green

Have a positive environmental impact, raise standards and save money year on year with some simple steps

Encourage healthy habits

Starting with the basics can make a big difference: encouraging children to switch off lights and technology when not in use is a quick fix which can help with carbon footprint and costs. To improve health (and concentration!), as well as reduce plastic usage, an atmospheric water generator can be a sustainable solution.

Skywell from Sharp, is an environmentally friendly alternative to bottle-fed dispensers or plastic bottles, removing the need for water deliveries or single-use bottles. At a time when consumers and businesses are actively seeking ways to minimise their environmental impact, technology like Skywell has the potential to help us all think differently about drinking water.

Utilise efficient ICT equipment

By switching your classroom projector to a more efficient interactive whiteboard, you can make an impact in the classroom and help make a difference.

Many projectors use costly mercury-filled lamps which need to be responsibly disposed of. With a lower carbon footprint, Sharp’s 70” BIG PAD uses around 60% less electricity** when benchmarked against some of the most common classroom projectors and can reduce TCO by around £1,000 (over 5 years).

Optimise building systems

Using existing heating or lighting controls effectively can reduce energy wastage, save money and reduce emissions by up to 40%*.

Windows collaboration display from Sharp is a new breed of interactive display, combining touch technology with IoT sensors that monitor conditions like temperature and air quality, enabling you to optimise room conditions, save energy and have a more positive impact on the environment.

MEET THE TEAM! Connect2Staff

This month, we speak to Jason Vander, Operations Manager at Connect2Staff, about the current state of recruitment in the education sector and how you can get the best for your school when it comes to the hiring the right people for the job.

Q: What impact is staffing shortages having on the schools you work with?

A: The biggest impact schools are facing is the lack of continuity for children, and, quite often, children are not being taught by subject specialists. We are seeing stress levels of teaching staff increasing, which is having a knock on effect with an increase of teaching staff having time off through sickness.

Q: What are the key qualities you look for when placing teachers in schools?

A: We place real emphasis on the ’fit’ of teaching professionals when matching them with a school; understanding the culture and the needs of the school when matching is critical for us. Equally essential is that candidates display the right skills and experience, as well as the relevant qualifications, checks and references before being placed.

Q: What sets you apart from what your competitors can offer?

A: Our team are sector specialists with nearly 50 years of experience recruiting within the education field. Connect2Staff are Recruitment Employment Confederation (REC) Gold Accredited and we offer our schools 24/7 access to our consultants.

Q: What are the changes you are seeing in the educational climate?

A: We have seen increased budget cut-backs in schools, which has really put schools under pressure to continue to deliver the best education for their children year-on-year. The schools recruitment market has become a very ‘candidate led’ market as the demand for quality teaching increases. Working with a specialist dedicated education recruitment agency like us is essential to give you access to best candidates in the market.

Q: What sort of teachers are most in demand at this moment in time?

A: Typically core subject teachers such as Maths and Science continue to be highly sought after, and we are also seeing a real increase in demand for SEN teachers and support staff.

Q: What advice would you give to a school looking to recruit permanent or supply staff?

A: Contact the Connect2Staff team and draw on our experience and expertise. We’ll work with you to find the best teaching talent available when you need them. We offer a total solution to schools as we recruit teaching professionals as well as administration and teaching support staff. We have a proven track record in delivering for our schools and colleges, and our friendly and effective recruitment service will take the stress out of the recruitment process for you!
