Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank opened the Nassau Center for Collaborative Assistance in June 2010. The Center is an ancillary program of Long Island Cares, Inc., to assist Nassau County residents experiencing hunger or food insecurity. The Center is located at 21 East Sunrise Highway, Freeport, NY 11520. The facility is a 2,000-squarefoot store front easily accessible by public transportation (bus, railroad) or car.

The Center provides the following services:

n First Stop Pantry West provides a minimum three-day supply of emergency food, when available, to families and individuals in need. Families are welcome to utilize the pantry monthly for food support.

n Baxter’s Pet Pantry provides pet food and pet supplies to families with pets in need. Food and supplies, when available, are offered monthly.

n Military Appreciation Tuesdays are special days available only to Veterans, military personnel, and their families.

Each week at all Long Island Cares' satellite locations, these clients have weekly access to emergency food, pet food, household supplies, and referral information.

n Information and Referral Services is provided to help people access entitlement programs like food stamps (SNAP), assistance with mortgage and utility bills, health services, WIC, and other programs.

n Conference and Training Center is for Nassau County member agencies to receive training and workshops. The Conference and Training Center is also available to allied non-profit organizations during business hours.

n Food Donation Drop-Off Location for residents of Nassau County donating food to Long Island Cares, Inc.

n Student Volunteer Corp is geared toward students 14-18 to get involved in hunger advocacy by assisting those in need of emergency food and support services.

n Job Development Services: New Paths to Achievement – Career and Personal Development and Vets Work provides onsite and community-based vocational training and assistance for people we serve and military personal seeking employment.

Evening and weekend hours can be arranged in advance, based on need.

Our staff is supported by community volunteers and student interns. Bilingual services are provided.
