King's Periodontology Society: Farewell Event for Professor Francis Hughes and Dr Veronica Booth
Presidents Sachin Patel, BDS5, and Aschani Thayaparan, BDS5, discuss in detail KCL Periodontology Society's events from this academic year, '21/'22
On Thursday 21st of October, our faculty hosted a memorable farewell event for our leading academics, Professor Hughes and Dr Booth. It was an afternoon of fantastic mini-lectures celebrating the work of Prof Hughes and Dr Booth and their contributions to the field of periodontology. The event was also streamed live on MS Teams, with an audience tuning in from outside the UK. Expert speakers from KCL were also invited, including our very own Dr Ghuman and Professor Curtis. External speakers from the University of Toronto, the Eastman Dental Institute, and the University of Birmingham also presented.

The talks ended with Professor Hughes giving an insight into the changes in periodontology from the 1970s to the present day. It was particularly interesting to see how smoking in the 1970s was not considered a risk factor for periodontitis, albeit current evidence showing that smoking can increase the risk of periodontal disease by 4 to 5 times.
During this event, we also proudly launched the King's Periodontology Society with Professor Nibali. There was an awards ceremony on behalf of the society, presenting prizes to postgraduate students for their outstanding case presentations.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed these talks and felt honoured to be in a university with such highly renowned experts.
King's Periodontology Society Webinar Series continues!
Our society were excited to host our third webinar at the end of February by Dr Richard Horwitz. Dr Horwitz spoke on the role of periodontology in smile design, showcasing some of his amazing cases through videos and enabling us to really understand the steps taken to achieve the enhanced pink aesthetics! What followed was a captivating audience discussion on the indications and outcomes of mucogingival therapy. It was also great to have our affiliated dental schools globally in attendance again!
