Publisher’s Note “When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed.” – Maya Angelou

A

s we enter into the winter season, it can be difficult to find the motivation and energy to get up and move about the world. That is what makes this time all the more important. The world is still getting back on its feet from the full stop of last year, and generosity of spirit is all the more crucial. The holiday season is one filled with joy and hope, and brings to mind the words of Winston Churchill, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” In celebration of Giving Tuesday and National Philanthropy Day, we encourage you to explore the organizations and their needs within these pages in the hopes that it will inspire you in the simple mission of doing good. Our fabulous cover has once again been designed by Michelle Spigarelli of Painting Petunias. Born in Our Town, Michelle was raised in Darien, Connecticut, and now lives in Lee’s Summit. You can find more of Michelle’s unique work on Instagram @paintingpetunias.

Newhouse is more than a domestic violence shelter. We believe in whole-person healing and renewal. Our goal is to reveal the courage and light within survivors of every generation, by providing the tools to transform lives.

Newhouse operates an Early Learning Center (birth to age five) and a Center for Education + Healing (school-aged students) at no cost to allow children the opportunity to experience stability and one-on-one support. It also allows parents to attend therapy groups, classes, job training, and to pursue self-sufficiency.
