lare Tracy Wallendjack and Robert Pitt Powell were married on February 8th at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Boca Grande, Florida. The bride is the daughter of Teresa and Mark Wallendjack of Montclair, Virginia. Clare is the granddaughter of Lois O’Connor of Hackettstown, New Jersey, and the late Walter Wallendjack, and the late Louise and Quentin Brown. Her groom is the son of Cappy and Peter Powell of Boca Grande. Robert is the grandson of the late Anne Paul Sinnott, the late Ray Paul, and the late Mary Kay and George Powell, Jr. The evening prior, Teresa and Mark Wallendjack and Cappy and Peter Powell hosted a welcome party on the Gasparilla Inn Croquet Lawns. Following the ceremony, the couple’s parents hosted a wedding reception at the Gasparilla Inn Beach Club. The happy couple honeymooned in St. Lucia and is at home in Kansas City, Missouri.

Clare is employed with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, and Robert is employed with Bromegrass Capital in Kansas City.

he HALO Foundation’s 15th Annual HALO Kansas City ArtReach Auction was held on February 28th at The Abbott. Several awards were presented, including Michelle Heath-Fisher and Todd Lowenstein, Volunteers of the Year; Mary Kemper Wolf and the HALO Advocate Board, Advocates of the Year; Julie Arnold, Artist of the Year; and Veronica Beard and the Haverty Family Foundation, Supporters of the Year. HALO works to provide housing, healing, and education to more than 1,400 homeless and at-risk children around the world.

he March of Dimes bestows the annual Nurse of the Year Awards to deserving professionals in the Kansas City nursing community, while raising funds to benefit its mission of improving the lives of those affected by premature birth. Amy Peters, Truman Medical Centers, is the chairman of this year’s gala, which will be held on November 7th at the Kansas City Marriott Downtown.

The black-tie event celebrates outstanding nurses in 22 categories and promises to be a rewarding and elegant evening for all.

essica Blubaugh is the director of WIN for KC (Women’s Intersport Network). As a division of the Kansas City Sports Commission and Foundation, WIN works to empower the lives of girls and women through advocating and promoting the lifetime value of sports and fitness, while providing opportunities for participation and leadership development. A member of the Centurions Spring Class of 2021, Jessica serves on the steering committee and will step into the role of steering committee chairman in her second year of the program.

Jessica also volunteers with the Longfellow Community Association, where she serves as the vice president and leads the communications committee.

The couple posed on the south side of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art during what appeared to be a blissful outing with their two dogs, Louie, seven, and Charlie, five. I have since learned that come rain, snow, or sunshine, Kathryn and Nick walk their dogs several times a week at the Museum’s Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park or on the grounds of the National World War I Museum and Memorial. They love the fresh air, the grand architecture, and the intriguing works of art. (Louie is on the left, and Charlie is on the right, and both are from the Lasater Family Goldens in Lamar, Missouri.) This image touched me weeks ago, and it especially touches me now, while we are all enduring the quarantine in our separate worlds. I’m sure you know that The Nelson-Atkins is closed to the public, and the works of art inside are secured and protected. Outside, you will see that we continue to celebrate works of art and nature. Although we do not encourage gatherings in the Sculpture Park just now, we do welcome those who want to take (socially distant) walks and play with your dogs. Thank you, Kathryn and Nick, for inspiring me over the holidays and especially now, reminding us that lovely, golden times are ahead for all of us.

PAWS IN THE ACTION: PETS BOTH REAL AND CONSTRUCTED CLAW THEIR WAY ONTO LOCAL STAGES

f we could ever train animals to follow blocking and precise stage directions night after night, they might actually take over theater as we know it. Because nothing captures an audience’s attention the way a live animal does. Directors place animals onstage at their own peril, in fact: Once a dog or cat enters (or even a well-designed puppet of same), an audience pretty much forgets everything else you’ve placed in front of it.

Yet playwrights, opera composers, and choreographers continue to include animals in their works, leaving directors with the task of making it “work.” And while Broadway and Hollywood can hire expensive trainers, in Kansas City it’s an issue that directors struggle with constantly.

“You really do not have control of a live animal,” said Cynthia Levin, producing artistic director of the Unicorn Theatre, who has had extensive experience with dogs, cats, birds, and worse onstage. “Luckily, labs and golden retrievers are the best that I’ve had to train for those situations.”

Local audiences are no strangers to animals onstage, and will be familiar with the level of distraction they cause. I personally have watched a half-dozen productions of the Kansas City Ballet’s Giselle, which like most versions contains a scene with a Great Dane or a borzoi, and I couldn’t describe to you a single thing the dancers were doing during those sequences.

Both the theatrical and the operatic adaptations of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men contain a critical “role” for a canine, though he’s usually on a leash and simply sits still for long periods. At the KCRep’s most recent production, however, actor Manon Halliburton’s 11-year-old Labrador, Molly, stole every scene she was in. Actor Jan Rogge’s Buster was featured in last season’s Shakespeare in Love (and it was not even his debut). “The Queen loves a dog,” said Sidonie Garrett, the Festival’s director, of the role in which Jan herself appeared. “And in this case, our Queen was our canine actor’s ‘doggy Mom.’ ” Cynthia has used several of her own dogs onstage, most notably the late Golda, a golden retriever who also appeared at The Coterie and the Kansas City Repertory Theatre. “There are dogs … that’ll do it,” she said, “and then there Buster Rogge was featured in are certain dogs that are stubborn Heart of America Shakespeare Festival’s Shakespeare in Love. little things.” (Among the latter is Cynthia’s current darling, Zia, who would follow stage directions “only if you make a line of cookies on the floor that she could follow.”) Golda, on the other hand, was born for the stage. “When Golda was at the Rep, she got a paycheck,” Cynthia said with a laugh.

As for felines, Cynthia said: Please no. “We’ve done a couple of plays with cats, and man! ... I would love to talk to every single playwright who wants a cat onstage, because cats do not want to do what you tell them.”

The Unicorn’s production of The Lieutenant of Inishmore featured a live feline, “and I would say our cat did what it needed to do 75 percent of the time,” Cynthia said. “That’s as good as it gets with a wild animal.”

The Unicorn has used even more exotic animals, most notably a ball python for the fundamentalist snake handler of Talking With. “I tell you,

when that snake came out of the cage, the people on the front row were freaking out,” Cynthia said. Thus not all animal distractions are of the “aww, cute!” variety, she said. “It depends on the animal: from people saying ‘Oh, look at the little dog!’ as opposed to ‘Augh! Look at that snake!’ ” Perhaps it’s no wonder, then, that producers have taken to puppetry, which offers a viable option to the vagaries of living creatures.

Fortunately, one of the nation’s most prominent puppet ensembles is right here in Kansas City: Mesner Puppet Theater has had its share of creations on local stages, in addition to the animals it creates for its own mainstage productions. In 2018, Mike Horner and the company created one of the most remarkable puppets we’ve seen in Kansas City: a representation of Diego, the actual service dog that actor Logan Black used to sniff out bombs in Iraq while serving in the United States Army’s Specialized Search Dog unit.

Logan’s one-man play, Bond, one of the hits of the Unicorn Theatre’s 2018-2019 season, chronicled the vital relationship of soldier and service dog: But the real Diego had died since Logan’s Iraq tours, and in any event the idea of a live canine “acting” onstage for 90 minutes seemed implausible.

In such cases, Mike said, the goal is not to create a puppet that looks eerily realistic, but rather one that “gives enough information that the audience can fill in the blanks. We rely on that in puppetry all the time.”

Diego was a modification of the Japanese bunraku tradition, in which the puppeteer appears onstage but remains unobtrusive.

Mike has created puppets for other companies (a sea turtle for Spinning Tree Theatre’s Shipwrecked, various creatures for Shrek the Musical), and he makes countless animals for his company’s own shows. And when Mike recounts fables, his puppets not only talk but often take on other human characteristics. “Kids understand that it’s not real, that this is a story they’re being told,” he said. “And they buy into the characters: That’s just good theater.”

Even in traditional theater, though, “puppet animals” still drag the audience’s attention from a play, as several local companies have learned. What many Unicorn Theatre’s remember most from the Kansas City Ballet’s Bond, with Logan Black production of Septime Webre’s The Wizard and the Diego puppet of Oz, for example, were designer Nicholas Mahon’s Toto, not to mention the harrowing Flying Monkeys.

Puppets might be the wave of the future in theater, and they can often be as effective as live animals. This was especially true in Bond, Cynthia said: “It is absolutely true. As soon as that dog puppet came onstage, that’s where everybody looked.”

uth J. Brackney may be a partner/attorney with Lathrop GPM, but she spends a lot of her volunteer time supporting causes that involve animals. She is a volunteer with Wayside Waifs, which is committed to finding homes for all adoptable pets and is the largest pet adoption campus in Kansas City. Wayside Waifs does not euthanize adoptable animals, and there are no time limits for animals in its care. Ruth also was a board member of Wayside Waifs for three years and has participated in its 5K run, Strutt With Your Mutt.

She also is involved with War Horses for Veterans, which is the premier horsemanship networking and personal growth program in the United States for combat veterans. Its three to four-day equine programs are designed to teach the basics of horsemanship to veterans and to create a network that will provide outlets for other opportunities and friendship. The program is free to veterans, and they may return as many times as they want, as long as they bring another combat veteran.

Ruth’s parents served as role models in terms of her engagement with philanthropy. “My father was a lawyer in our small town,” said Ruth. “He did not specialize in a particular area of law but had a general practice and did a little bit of everything, including real estate, divorce, family law, estates, and criminal. He was the most honest, genuine, moral, and ethical person. I remember that he

would bring home pies and various fruit and vegetables in the summertime from clients. It was not until I was older that I realized that he didn’t always charge his clients (or didn’t charge them much!) and they were repaying him for their gratitude with these items. My parents always encouraged their six daughters to help others less fortunate than we were.”

In addition, Ruth has been on the board of directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters for the last two years. She has been involved with helping recruit more Bigs, in kids receiving one-to-one mentoring, and in the organization’s fundraising and Planned Giving efforts.

Ruth says that her clients have been a motivating factor from a philanthropic standpoint. “I have had the privilege in my career as an estate planning attorney of working with amazing clients who are very generous and philanthropic. Many clients have created private foundations, donor advised funds, and charitable trusts to support local and national charities. I have observed my clients giving back to the Kansas City community in many ways and helping others. Their generosity and philanthropy have been an example to me to strive to give to others and to the community. I endeavor to be like these clients.”

Ruth feels honored to have been named a Rising Star. “I was deeply moved by the award and the recognition and accolades I received from clients, peers, friends, and family members.”
