The 2021-2022 Fine Arts season will be a spectacular one! From productions like Clue, The Hobbit and The Jungle Book in the fall to an all-student art show and an orchestra concert in the spring, our talented students and faculty have made KCD's arts program second to none. At KCD, we believe that the arts are an essential component of a high-quality independent school education. The benefits children receive from participating in arts programs are necessary

We are fortunate to have the resources to film, stream, and share music, visual and dramatic arts performances in a variety of ways. KCD Fine A rt s Dep art m ent Resp o nse t o t he Co ro nav irus Pand em ic Especially during this time, the arts are critical for helping children connect with each other, express themselves and process stress, and stay engaged in creative learning (Public Citizens for Children + Youth PCCY.org). As a central component of the KCD mission, the fine arts play an integral role in the lives of KCD students. To maintain the high quality of fine arts offerings at our school and to protect the well being of all our stakeholders (students, faculty, and staff), the Fine Arts Department faculty and staff have devised comprehensive protocols for the safe practice of visual and performing arts both during the day and in our after-school activities such as play rehearsals and the Fine Arts Academy private music lessons. Below is a summary of the specifics of the Fine Arts Department response to COVI D-19 PROCEDURES DURING THE SCHOOL DA Y - Three-foot distancing between students and between students and faculty is enforced in all Fine Arts classes and activities, as is proper mask usage. - With the new CDC definitions of "close contact," all music instructors have been directed to avoid breaking the 3-foot barrier between themselves and their students and to demonstrate
through mirroring rather than hand over hand. - the KCD Choirs continue to perform outdoors and to wear masks for indoor rehearsals. Choirs continue to rehearse in well-ventilated spaces. - Sanitizing hands before touching any equipment in the fine arts classrooms. Sanitizing hands upon leaving class. - Sanitizing all keyboard instruments with alcohol before and after playing. PROCEDURES FOR A FTER-SCHOOL A CTIVITIES ( FINE A RTS A CA DEMY A ND PLA Y PRA CTICES) - Minimum of 3-foot social distance is maintained between teacher and student - All pianos and keyboards are wiped down with alcohol wipes at the beginning and end of each lesson - All voice lessons are held in large, well-ventilated spaces - All private instruction in instrumental music is given using the "mirroring technique" where teachers demonstrate the technique rather than showing "hand-over-hand" PROTOCOLS The procedures above are a combination of recommendations. We are following the recommendations outlined by the CDC, the Metro Health Department, and KDE (Kentucky Department of Education) in addition to those offered by our educational and professional organizations. I n other words, we are going above and beyond KDE's recommendations. Shows are staged most often in the 430-seat KCD Theater, although both divisions have also held productions in the Scinta Black Box Theater, a flexible and intimate performance space.
considerations in these fields while also considering their commercial applications. Our photography curriculum includes three trimester courses exploring the technical and aesthetic aspects of photography. Students shoot on film using a 35mm camera and develop their own negatives in the darkroom.
MUSIC Lower school music students sing, chant, play, and move as they perform and create music. Whenever possible, music classes connect thematically with the classroom curriculum to help students make important connections between disciplines.
DRA MA in t he Curriculum The Kentucky Country Day drama curriculum begins in Middle School and provides students with a solid foundation in acting, play production, and the history and development of theater. I n addition to their core drama classes, middle school students can choose from a wide variety of electives such as Dance, Storytelling, Stagecraft, and Broadcasting. I n addition to continuing their study of acting and play production, upper school students can also take classes in Directing, Film, and Film Studies.
I n Graphic Design, students learn the techniques and principles of good design while using digital imaging software. Students learn the fundamentals of page layout, color theory, typography, and the technical requirements of digital and print production.
VISUA L A RTS Middle schoolers continue to explore rhythm, meter, timbre, and tone by playing instruments, singing, reading and writing music, as well as studying composers from the past and present. Electives such as Piano Lab, Chorus, and String Orchestra allow students to pursue in-depth study of choral or instrumental music. Upper School students can continue to study music individually or by participating in one of our performing arts groups: Upper School Orchestra, Chorale, and Select Choir. Electives such as Music Theory and Electronic Music add further options for students.
PHOTOGRA PHY + DESIGN A series of courses in photography and design introduces students to the fundamental skill and aesthetic
Our visual arts program begins in the Lower School by providing the foundation for a real understanding and enjoyment of art through the development of basic skills and the exploration of diverse media. The middle school curriculum refines students?skills in drawing, painting, printing, ceramics, collage, and hand building. Electives include classes such as Screamers (papier-mâché sculpture), Web Comics (digital drawing), and Textile Art. The upper school curriculum offers courses in drawing, painting, ceramics, photography, and graphic design. Upper School courses combine the study of technique with a focus on art history, criticism, and related cultural issues.

STEA M & MA KER EDUCA TION We?re proud to be a regional leader in STEAM and Maker education. Our schoolwide STEAM curriculum is based around interdisciplinary and project-based learning that integrates art & design into the traditional STEM fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.Our STEAM curriculum is supported by the KCD Design and Fabrication Laboratory? the first makerspace at an independent school in Louisville. The Design and Fabrication Laboratory is a hands-on fabrication laboratory where students take an active role in designing and creating projects using a wide range of tools.
