Letter from the Board of Directors.

Dear Friends of CANELA,

I

am pleased to present you, on behalf of the Board of Directors, with the Annual Financial Report for 2019. Thanks to your generous support we were able to help some great people and projects in Latin America and Africa, really living up to our unofficial motto, #helpthehelpers.

Although our gross income remained almost stable with comparison to 2018, we did not manage to grow as much as we wanted with regard to new donors. Please keep this in mind in 2020 and share CANELA’s mission with your friends.

As believers, let us not forget that material support - money - is our least important contribution. Let’s keep praying for all these wonderful “Helpers” who do so much for our brothers and sisters in Latin America and Africa.

B

ecause the Catholic Association for the New Evangelization in Latin America and Africa is convinced that the true salvation of the human person comes not from economic well-being alone, but from the discovery of a loving God by each and every human person.

In the last fifty years, more than a trillion dollars in development aid has been sent by religious and secular or-ganizations to Latin America and Africa.

Often sent with great love and sacrifice, this material aid has done much good.

Wells, electricity, hospitals and schools: all things that might not exist today, if this help had not been sent. And yet, despite all this important material help, crime, the loss of values, and the disappearance of cultures and traditions have grown in leaps and bounds in many countries.

This is why we support men and women who dedicate their lives to spreading knowledge of God in developing countries.

ur mission is to help existing, well-proved educational projects of the Catholic Church to form spiritual and civic values on as large a scale as possible in Latin America and Africa.

We have identified some very promising programs and try to focus on them, since they have been effective and enjoy the support of the dioceses involved.

Who we helped in 2019

The Full-Time Catechists in El Salvador.

I

n El Salvador, we support a program called “Full-Time Catechists”.

This program seeks to form the capacities of lay persons in heavilypopulated parishes. Generally, there is no lack of lay persons who would willingly lend a hand in the non-sacramental care of the parish: baptism preparation, confirmation, First Communion and marriage preparation, the coordination of youth ministry, ministry to the sick and elderly, coordination of the parish’s charitable activity, prison ministry, liturgy etc. etc.

There are two principle challenges to this sort of collaboration in our socioeconomic contexts. First, even the most motivated lay persons often lack the know-how to help in these areas of pastoral care. Not just the pastoral application of the Faith, but also a knowledge of the Faith itself.

How many sacraments are there? What is the “Church”? What are all the areas of action that are NOT the exclusive domain of the clergy? What does the Church teach about marriage, and how can de facto situations be regularized for the good of all?

The rebuilding of churches damaged by the 2017 Mexico earthquake.

I

n September 2017 two separate earthquakes shook Mexico City, leaving over 150,000 people homeless and closing 40 Catholic churches.

Over two years later, many people are still homeless and almost 20 churches still closed due to structural damage. We were able to help re-build with your generous contributions.

Who we helped in 2019

Bibles and mattresses for the Schools of the Faith in Zambia, southern Africa.

Z

ambia, in southern Africa, is one of the poorest countries on earth.

The School of the Faith is growing there and this year we were able to finance hundreds of Bibles for the School’s enthusiastic students.

We also purchased mattresses for the School in differnt Zambian towns, since students travel long distances from the villages to attend class and cannot make it back home at night.

Clergy healthcare in Latin America.

I

n many parts of Latin America, the clergy receive no regular salary and do not have health insurance. We try to contribute to this need for a few needy priests every year.

The Our Lady of Guadalupe sanctuary and home for the poor in Durango, Mexico.

W

ith your help we were able to send funds to build the Our Lady of Guadalupe Sanctuary in the northern Mexican diocese of Durango.

The Sanctuary is a place of prayer, but also a place where the poor are fed and clothed, and receive the attention necessary to put them on track to becoming independent and responsible citizens.

The Building of the Regional Headquarters of the School of the Faith in Africa.

W

ith your help, the School of the Faith and Leadership has been growing rapidly throughout English-speaking Africa. In collaboration with the IF Foundation in Switzerland, we were able to contribute to the building of a Regional Headquarters for the School, in Benin City, Nigeria.
