Maybe AI Armageddon isn’t in the cards Two professors joined a panel at Lithermans, moderated by the Monitor’s David Brooks By DAVID BROOKS Concord Monitor
Y
ou know those predictions from some artificial intelligence companies that AI might produce Armageddon any day now? Maybe we shouldn’t freak about them because they are a clever business ploy rather than a warning. This reassuring possibility was one of many intriguing ideas that were floated during Tuesday ’s Science Cafe in Concord, a free-wheeling discussion among some 70 people who filled Litherman’s Limited Brewery to hear about the effect AI is having on jobs, education and even humans’ ability to control our environment. The two panelists, Professors Nick Smith of UNH and James Dobson of Dartmouth, both expressed what might be called a healthy skepticism about recent fears of incipient Armageddon, such as those from a couple of researchers at the AI firm Anthropic who said there is a 10% chance the
software will destroy civilization in the next decade or so. They have some suggestions for further reading, which are listed at the bottom of this article. Their caution about claims of civilization’s destruction, they said, comes from the fact that they make the AI firms look much more powerful and accomplished. That’s not just an ego boost for the employees but, more importantly, is a good way to lure investors, intimidate opposition and stampede lawmakers into regulating the industry in a way that locks in their front-runner advantage. Given such an incentive to exaggerate, the panelists said, we should be suspicious of these warnings. I can’t give you more details because I was moderating the panel rather than taking notes, carrying a microphone to get comments from the crowd that packed Litherman’s as if I was channeling Bob Barker from The Price is Right. But you can see the whole argument on Concord
TV, which filmed the Science Cafe and will have the video ready next week. We’ll have links to it, as well. I can say there was a lot during the session that wasn’t reassuring. That includes a comment from one lawyer who said AI made a discovery which saved his innocent client from a guilty plea, which is, for what it’s worth, a positive outcome. But he said that anybody whose occupation occurs entirely on a computer — which, come to think of it, includes me — should expect their job to be taken over by AI in the next five or ten years. Is that right? Good question, which is exactly why we had a Science Cafe to discuss it. Science Cafe was a monthly occurrence in Concord for many years until COVID ended it. The Concord Monitor will be sponsoring more of them in the future, although they won’t be monthly. Raking the pond Paddlewheel-powered machines take on White Park’s invasive lotus By DAVID BROOKS Concord Monitor
T
he eight-year-and-counting project to keep White Park’s pond from being filled with lotus plants has returned in the shape of floating, paddlewheel-driven powered rakes. Two of these Hydro-Rakes from Solitude Lake Management in Shrewsbury, Mass., were on the pond Wednesday, part of a multi-day effort to pull up approximately 1,200 cubic yards of sediment and vegetation, which will be piled on the ground to drain before being taken off site for disposal. The one-person boats are propelled by two paddlewheels, one on each side, with a large hydraulic rake up front to gather and carry material.
GEOFF FORESTER / For the Monitor
One of the two hydro-rakes digs deposits the lilies to a front loader where they were piled up on the shoreline. The work will slow the spread of the invasive plant, which first showed up here in 2018, including removing plants from, at or near the surface that would interfere with iceskating when the pond freezes. But officials know this by itself won’t eliminate the problem. The best way to get rid of a fast-spreading aquatic plant like the lotus would be to drain the pond and dredge out the entire bottom to remove any roots and seeds. Hydro-raking is a
short-term solution while a longer term plan, including funding, is developed. Even dredging, however, isn’t perfect. On its website about the project, the city acknowledges that the expensive and disruptive process can’t guarantee complete success: “This is where a pond maintenance plan comes into play” to ensure that any re-emergence is nipped in the bud, says the

SCHOOLS
Food forests take root Project adds fruit trees, berries and herbs to create outdoor classroom By REBECA PEREIRA Concord Monitor
First, a spindly apple tree descended from Richard Hodges’s plant trailer. He lowered the base of the sapling into the hands of two students, and the next pair moved up in line. Fourth-grader Kelsei Douglas conducted traffic, advising that her classmates “watch out, watch out” and reminding them, “guys, we’ve got more over here.” Carrying the heftier Asian pear tree required three children, balancing, yelping, bumping the fence enclosing the Southwick School’s nascent food forest
in Northfield. A food forest is a tiered orchard, a planned garden built primarily from perrenial plants that reliably produce a harvest year after year. Last Friday, the school began the process of converting its existing orchard, with its already fruit-bearing trees planted several years ago, into one such forest — one of 30 planned for schools across New Hampshire through a $10 million U.S. Department of Agriculture grant awarded in 2024 to the University of New Hampshire, Dartmouth College and Yale University. “I brought Asian pears, which are round, crispy and delicious. And we also brought other things to make the orchard even more diverse and exciting,” said Hodges, founder and
program manager of ReTreeUS, a Sandwich-based experiential education nonprofit. He elongated his syllables in the way of an experienced educator. “We have some strawberry plants, and I have one herb plant that I call ‘the pizza herb,’ oregano.” The five-year grant supports three prongs, each one aimed at promoting agroforestry, an integrated approach to farming in forested areas: research into reducing the environmental impact of farming through agroforestry, training for 18 conventional farmers seeking to adopt agroforestry practices and training for 60 educators through UNH Extension’s 4H program. “The benefit of food

Outdoor classroom created forests in schools is providing an opportunity for students to get out into the environment and recognize where their food comes from, and see this interplay between plants on the different strata,” explained Mike Smith, the program manager leading UNH Exension’s Farms, Forests and the Future professional development program. So far, the program has enrolled 34 educators, who over two years attend workshops and make inroads on agroforestry projects of their own. Not all will create food forests, but Smith, a former Mascenic Regional High science teacher of 23 years, sees these as effective teaching devices. “When you think of a school, they have a certain amount of landscaping that comes with the school. That could all be edible landscaping,” Smith said. “To just go with ornamental plant that then have to be taken care of by facilities — turn that into a food forest instead, and I think it’s just a great learning laboratory.” Brian Winslow, a unified arts teacher who splits his time between the Southwick and Sanbornton Central schools, developed his
concept early on, knowing that he wanted to fill in the orchard with blueberry bushes, shrubs and other ground cover plants. He began working on his own over the summer and continued last week with help from Smith, Hodges and his troupe of fourth-graders. They put trees in the ground, digging with their hands and loosening roots with as little mess as possible. Hodges explained the grafting process that guarantees an apple tree will bear a desired variety, like tree surgery. “Does anyone here look exactly like one of your parents? Yeah, not really. It’s the same with fruit trees. If you plant the seed, a lot of times it’ll be different from the parent,” he said. “So, this is two trees in one, and sometimes we make even more mutant trees.” Each child returned to class with a snack fruit from the orchard, but not before one necessary reminder. “With anything that’s growing outside, it’s never a bad idea to just rinse your fruit. Your hands have a little dirt on them that came from the ground, and you can get that onto the peach before you eat it. It’s a good idea to wash your fruit and wash your hands,” Winslow said.
POND FROM 3 site. The City Manager’s budget request for the 2027 fiscal year includes $200,000 for the pond project, pending City Council approval. Two species of lotus are native to Central America and parts of the southern U.S. They are relatively new to New England and considered invasive here because of their propensity to spread quickly and dominate water bodies. “Controlling the spread of lotus is not only necessary for the ecological health of native species and habitats within White Park Pond but is also an
urgent concern for potential spread to other water bodies in New Hampshire and throughout New England,” wrote David Gill, Park and Recreation director, in a July report to the City Council. A single flower of the lotus was first seen on the pond in 2018 and within three years the plant covered more than half the surface of the pond, which is a little less than two acres. The pond is less than 4 feet deep. Less than a foot of sediment lies under the water in all
but the northwest corner, which was not dredged during work in the 1980s; in that portion, the sediment is up to 5 feet deep. As for the cause of the aquatic weed invasion, it’s almost certainly the same cause that brings in invasive species: People. “Although we do not know for sure we assume the Lotus plant, like the Koi fish in the pond, was placed there by someone,” Gill says in the report.

Here are suggestions for more reading from the two professors, some of which were mentioned during the Science Cafe: ■ Roopika Risam’s “Data Empire: The Power of Information to Organize, Control, and Dominate.” This is not exactly about AI but about the larger data-dominated concerns that make it possible. The book also shows continuity between the use of this technology to govern people with other data-driven methods. ■ Dennis Tenen’s “Literary Theory for Robots: How Computers Learned to

She’s a computer scientist, and while this can get technical and into the details of neural network networks and language modeling, it’s accessible and clear. ■ Leif Weatherby’s “Language Machines: Cultural AI and the End of Remainder Humanism.” This is a dense theoretical book for folks interested in the implications this technology has for lan-
