Looking for ways to get out in nature this summer?

One potential destination for summer nature-lovers is the Harris Center for Conservation Education in Hancock.

“The Harris Center has a full calendar of summer events for adults, children, and families, and many of them are free,” said Susie Spikol, director of community programs at the Harris Center.

Spikol, a native of Brooklyn, is a naturalist with more than years of experience with the environment and wildlife of the Monadnock region. The Harris Center grounds include trailheads leading up Skatutakee Mountain, Thumb Mountain and Gap Mountain, with loops including Jack’s Pond, a historic site mentioned in the New Hampshire Black History Trail.

The Harris Center grounds also include a pollinator garden, wetlands and meadow walks and shorter nature trails appropriate for young children. Little hikers especially enjoy the Har-

Gorga. The class will examine New Hampshire’s colorful dragonflies and damselflies, whose return mark the beginning of summer. Gorga’s work will be on exhibit at the Harris Center in June, with an opening reception on June 5.

Mushroom enthusiasts can attend the Mushroom Meanders with the Morel Quandary Club on June 13 and Aug. 29. The June Babies in Backpacks and Toddlers in Tow walk is at 10 a.m. June 14 at Fremont Field in Peterborough, and the Accessible Birding group will meet on June 15 at the Distant Hill Nature Trail in Alstead. On Thursday, June 20, from 8 to 9 p.m., and again on Aug. 22, the

center’s Environmental Studies Institute will offer a special evening program on moonlight forest bathing. Forest bathing, a contemplative practice originating in Japan, is “an invitation to slow down and use your senses to explore the wild world with intention.” Spikol and yoga instructor Marilyn Wyzga will lead a moonlit nature walk and opportunity to “recharge your spirit.”

July events include several opportunities to get out on the water, such as a paddle on Robb Reservoir, guided by historian Alan Rumrill, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of Stoddard.

Rindge Select Board members discussed several wage scenarios for 2024 Wednesday, and while they did not come to a decision, they agreed on a wage “ceiling” of a department-head recommended step increases plus a 3% costof-living adjustment as a starting point for discussions moving forward.

The board looked at two potential scenarios, the first of which was a budget requested by department heads that had multiple employees moving to what department heads believe is commensurate with their experience. Select Board Chair Marybeth Quill said that under that plan, hourly employees could have wage increases of 2% to 20%. The other scenario was a uniform, across-the-board step increase of 2% for most hourly employees.

The department heads’ request would result in an overall budget of $5,378,130, which is an increase of about $429,360 from the current budget. The 2% step increase would result in an overall budget of $5,196,189, or a $247,419 increase. The proposal with a 2% step increase proposal also did not include $74,000 for salary and benefits for a currently unfilled ninth police officer, a position previously approved by voters at Town Meeting.

Regarding the department heads’ requested budget, Select Board member Karl Pruter said the request was not unreasonable, given how difficult recruiting qualified candidates is in the current economy. He said it “would fix

The summer workshop, featuring a performance of “Aladdin,” will be from July 8 through July 12, with a public performance on July 14 at 2 p.m. Acting workshops will take place in the mornings, with technical and backstage sessions in the afternoons. Auditions for the summer workshop will be held on June 19, 20 and 22.

The fall workshop, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” will hold auditions on Sept. 24, 25 and 28. The fall session runs from Oct. 15 through Nov. 7 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., with a public performance on Nov. 10 at 2 p.m.

Jackson said the program, both for the past two years and the current season, has focused on a theater workshop for elementary- and middle schoolage children, not only those interested in being on the stage, but learning all aspects of the craft, including creating of costumes, sets, sounds and lighting.

“They learn a little of every-

thing, culminating in a production that’s not just for parents and grandparents, but really is a quality production for the community,” Jackson said.

One of the goals of the program is to introduce children to the concept of theater from a young age, and helping them to build their public speaking skills and confidence.

“Anyone can tell you how helpful theater can be for the growth of young folks. Just being in a program like this for a week can be life-changing for a child, in terms of finding something they can say is their own,” he said. “It helps give confidence, with focus; there are so many benefits to their growth.”
