From the viewpoints of avid gardeners in New Hampshire, this is an obvious notion, while those who don’t garden might see plants as creating drudgery.

But consider the research indicating how the color green is calming because its shorter wavelengths don’t need our eyes to use any energy to adjust to seeing it. The color green, for most people, makes us think of the natural world – so we center and focus on less external stimulation.

Herbal concoctions have long been known to help heal and cure certain maladies or disorders, indicating even more that plants can offer.

For one more angle to understand the research about the connections between a calm frame of mind and restorative benefits, consider the research of Avik Basu and Jason Duvall. In their article (along with other co-authors) “Attention Restoration Theory: Exploring the Role of Soft Fascination and Mental Bandwidth,” in the Envi-

inflammation, lower blood pressure and allow more clear thinking. This type of calming influence is called “soft fascination.” Soft fascination is finding something that holds our attention but allows us to replenish our body and its own healing mechanisms.

Taking a walk surrounded by nature is an example of where you can find soft fascination, while watching a television show (whether a streaming feature you are wrapped up in or a trusty standby on a standard broadcast channel) is an example of an activity which requires more processing by our brains, distracting from the input of the calming effects of being absorbed in the natural world.

Your question at this point can rightfully be, “I have no access to a trail to make a nature hike,” or, “It’s too cold outside, and I don’t have clothing adequate to be outdoors for long.” You might be surprised to learn that research has shown the calming, restorative effects of the natural world can be infused in your daily routine even through observing indoor plants or even faux flowers!

This might sound confusing or even like a contradiction, but let’s dig into what it means as we age, to be healthy and able to be active.

When we’re calm, we are in a healthy frame of mind, which is also ideal for our bodies to restore, renew and even heal faster and reduce the damage stress can instigate on our systems.

Being calm, with this focus on the definition, means we aren’t ruminating on problems, anxiously waiting for what’s next on our growing to-do lists or being CRIS lost in thinking about past probBL ACKSTONE lems.

Anticipating future problems means we’re taking time from being in the moment. And, yes, anticipating a future problem can be reframed by calling that “solving a future situation I see facing me.” That’s more constructive and a topic for future research!

This article, along with other publications by those authors, helped set the stage for many medical practitioners who now prescribe – yes prescribe – connection time for their patients to dedicate to absorbing nature! They acknowledge how many of us have precious little connection with elements of nature and how plants and the sounds of nature can calm us down and allow us to renew and recharge, with what is known about soft fascination.

Bringing up the sounds of nature, along with benefits of seeing plants or being outdoors, is another angle to consider about how being calm allows us to stay more active. The current trend about nature connections to our health includes understanding songbirds’ ability to help us.

Whether in real life in your own backyard or surrounded by nature in an environment you can visit, hearing songbirds has been shown to lower anxiety and reduce innate paranoia.

Traffic noise has the opposite effect in several research projects.

The bird songs tap an ancient reaction, where we sensed if birds were calm and chirping hap-

pily, there was no imminent danger or predators.

Just as it’s been proven that seeing plants and flowers, whether indoors, outdoors or even “fake” triggers calm sensations, hearing recordings of bird songs can have the same positive reactions on our mindsets. When we hear recordings of the songs, breath becomes more regular and we have liberated parts of our minds for relaxation and minimizing cortisol release.

So how do these ideas, facts and research weave in to our daily lives to help us stay calm and therefore be able to be more active? By reducing inflammation and the aches and pains we may have ascribed to “just getting older,” we can feel more limber and enjoy walks outside or tasks in our gardens or learning firsthand what the pickleball craze is all about!

It can take practice, but take some time to sit in a lawn chair or set yourself up comfortably and look out a window for a few minutes each day. Work your way up to making this a habit, and try 10 minutes a day as a prescription for what you need to accomplish that day or think back on what you did accomplish or enjoy that day.

When you see or hear a bird on a branch or in a bush you may have zeroed in on, make that the

center of your thoughts. Chances are good that once you hear one bird, you will hear another – of the same type or of a different type in response to the first.

If you can’t access the natural environment so easily, then we do have an ability in our hands, with our smartphones. Check out the worldrenowned Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s website, birds.cornell.edu, or explore its app. There you can hear bird songs to practice with and see how you feel with this type of practical therapy.

Once you find yourself getting involved with Attention Restoration Therapy or soft fascination, you might enjoy the ability you’ll have to record bird songs you hear with the app’s ability to identify the bird by its song.

Research indicates that over time, your day will have a better flow to it, your body’s own healing mechanisms will kick in and you will feel more calm and able to accomplish more with more energy than you may have had in the recent past. Being calm will lead to a more active lifestyle!

Older folks aren’t valuable to society. If that’s true, let’s eliminate all history classes. We learn from what happened in the past. Who better to inform us than those who lived through it, especially if we don’t want to repeat historical negatives?

On March 29, John Burke of Peterborough marked his 82nd birthday.

Now, he will have to come up with a way to top last year, when he challenged himself to celebrate his 81st birthday by hiking up Pack Monadnock in Peterborough every day for 81 days straight.

“I wanted to do something, in my own mind, to celebrate,” Burke said.

Burke has always liked being outdoors, and Miller State Park, where he began his daily hikes, had a special place in his heart, as he worked there part-time as a park ranger while in high school. He said it was already a favorite of his, with access to both wood trails and a paved vehicle access up the mountain.

“I only got caught in the heavy rain three times – and there’s plenty of trees to stand under until the rain passes,” Burke said. “I enjoy being there, even when it’s raining or snowing.”

Burke said in good, dry weather, he’ll tackle the wooded trails, but he usually follows the toll road as a safety measure. He said he has met many other regulars on the trails – one of the things he likes most about the hobby.

“You meet a lot of nice people who go up,” he said. “There are quite a few people that go up there almost every day.”

Burke took on his challenge in the first half of June, and completed it on the last day of August. When he finished his hike that day, he was greeted at the Pack Monadnock base by park workers, who had arranged a surprise COURTESY

“Do it at a pace you can enjoy,” Burke advised. “Don’t be in a hurry to go up and down and go somewhere else. Enjoy the time. The first time I went up [Pack Monadnock], it took me an hour. Now, it’s more like half an hour. You can set your own goals, but don’t forget to enjoy the moment.”

Burke, who is retired from a career in sales in the dairy industry, said after completing his 81st hike, he’s still a regular at the park, and it’s his go-to hiking spot multiple times a week. He said he occasionally will branch out, climbing Mount Monadnock, North Pack Monadnock or going for walks in the back woods of Sharon or around Willard Pond, but Pack Monadnock and Miller State Park remain his favorite, for convenience and knowledge of the trails.

He said now that he’s celebrated his 82nd birthday, he’ll have to come up with a new way to mark his latest trip around the sun. He said it likely won’t be a consecutive challenge again but will likely involve a fitness goal, such as taking a certain amount of steps within 82 days.

“I think it’s been big, health-wise, for me,” Burke said of his hiking hobby. “It’s always fun when you’re outdoors, doing something.”

For those interested in picking up hiking, Burke said his main piece of advice it to take it as slow as you need to and enjoy the hike while it’s happening.

“It started out as a normal outing. My wife and I had to run to the grocery store. We were driving down the road casually going over our shopping list when the car ahead of me started to slow down anticipating the yellow light. I started to move my foot from the gas to the brake as any normal person would do when they see brake lights in front of them, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t feel my foot. The car kept moving forward and I just couldn’t get my foot on the brake and CRUNCH! I finally came to a stop when I hit the Car in front of me.”

This tragic story was shared with us by Mike S., a New Hampshire resident who has Peripheral Neuropathy. By STEPHANIE J. THOMSON It is incredibly important to have proper estate planning documents in place to protect yourself and your assets in the event of your incapacity, and so you can control what happens to your assets after you die.

But equally important is having the right documents in place for while you are still living. If you become incapacitated, who is going to make decisions on your behalf or manage your finances?

The following are two documents that can greatly impact your answers and should be discussed with your estate planning attorney, your financial adviser and/or your doctor.

If you’ve made a will or created a revocable trust to organize your affairs, I applaud you.

You’re ahead of about 50% of your fellow citizens.

Still, keep in mind that some of the most important but often poorly considered estate planning decisions are those about who to designate to make heads or tails out of your final estate/trust wishes and to work on those issues with the rest of your family members. And I know that because we’ve just experienced a couple of “unfortunate” choices for those critical roles that have made the estate and trust administration process for those families “unpleasant,” shall I say.

You may be thinking that the worst choice for important jobs like executor or trustee would be the child of decedent parents who has very little business or financial experience and couldn’t tell a good decision from a bad one. Conversely, you may also be thinking that the best choice would be the child who’s a lawyer or investment adviser and works in the legal or financial arena for

a living. Sorry to say – especially about lawyers – but that thinking is often the root of a disaster ahead.

And when you really think about it, the reason is simple. That’s because very few of these situations require the legal or financial acumen you’re counting on your most brilliant child, brother or niece to bring to bear. What you need instead of the know-it-alls, who may have gotten where they are in their personal or professional lives through aggressive, take-charge, even arrogant

MOs, are those rare souls who can get along with all the players, who are fair and reasonable and whom everyone else trusts and respects.

They can hire the lawyers and financial wizards if they need them, but they aren’t nearly as likely to need them as when everyone feels they’re being taken advantage of, bullied, cheated or lied to – and everyone feels the need to lawyer up to protect themselves.

So, looked at from this perspective, you may want to make an entirely different choice for your executor or trustee than you first thought.

The situations that prompted this lament certainly would have been better served by this counterintuitive approach, as would the well-intentioned parents who would have avoided rolling over in their wherevers.

Here’s a suggestion about how to test the approach I’m recommending. Have a family meeting where you talk about the considerations I’m advancing. Assemble your candidates and raise the issues among them. Tell them how you’re hoping the process will go.

has the JD or MBA or by who seems to be the take-charge type. And don’t cop out by naming everyone to serve as co-executors or cotrustees, at least unless your offspring are more likely to have each other’s backs than to engage in power plays. Any other co-sibling scenario is just kicking the can down the road and setting them all up for potential conflict. Of course, your life history with them will count for a lot, and the way they handle themselves during the family discussion will also be revealing.

Then, in order to avoid an awkward conclusion to the meeting, don’t tell them what you’ve decided. You don’t want to create conflict or hard feelings that may affect their own relationships – or theirs with you – before the time comes, and if you tell them and then change your mind, that can add the potential for serious discord.

Instead, once you make up your mind, compose a thoughtful side letter to explain your thinking. You may be able to soften a child’s disappointment by explaining that one seemed too busy to take on the ad-

ditional responsibilities or lived too far from home to devote the handson time to complete the work efficiently. You’ll know what to say and how to do it diplomatically, in the interests of preserving family harmony once you’re not there to be the peacemaker. And that’s goal No. 1, in my humble opinion.

One final tidbit is not to have this kind of meeting when you’re all gathered for a holiday celebration.

Those are supposed to be joyous occasions, and they have their own stresses. Plus, you don’t want someone to associate turkey or barbecue with challenging conversations and decide not to come back next year.

Look, I know this can be a difficult process, but so is a lot of parenting. And if you’re a child who’s reading this message with your parents, remember that this is their decision and respect them by being the team player you know is the right way to honor them.

Despite leading all health care sectors in wage increases, and offering the nation's best care, New Hampshire nursing homes seeking to hire staff are held back by unregulated out-of-state staffing agency price-gouging, and delays in finalizing Medicaid applications.

And they're further threatened by an unfunded one-size-fits-all federal staffing mandate that would close facilities and deny care access to frail Granite Staters, especially in rural areas.
