Derrick Loughlin captures community on camera profits and showing them the impact they have on the communities they work with—capturing the candid, fun, and loving connections and emotions that they bring to those they support.

With my photography, I put a new perspective on marketing. Rather than negative, sad, and downer vibes that the news or other outlets usually broadcast, I love to focus on the things in our communities that make living in New Hampshire great!

Q: What’s a secret or piece of fun trivia about you?

I almost was landed on by a helicopter! (I was asleep in the desert on the top of a mountain.) Imagine that photo!

Q: What’s your favorite part of your work day?

My favorite part of my work day is connecting with people who really make a

difference in their communities, and sharing their stories with the world. When people light up when they see a photo from an event, it makes me very happy because memories fade but photos are never forgotten.

Q: Favorite places to be?

My favorite place to be is either in the woods, on the beach, or on top of a mountain!

Q: What do you like to do for fun?

I love dirt biking with my twin and my family in the woods. I also love video games, having grown up with Saga, N64, (no Atari though), GameCube, Xbox and now a PC. One thing I will be picking up again after over 10 years is skateboarding, which is pretty exciting!

Q: Favorite movie of all time?

“Spiderman,” any one with Tom Holland

Q: What organizations are you involved with?

New Hampshire Professional Photographers, Professional Photographers of America, the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce, Greater Merrimack Souhegan Valley Chamber of Commerce, and NH Center for Nonprofits.

Q: What is one of your life goals?

One of my life goals is to be the number one photographer for nonprofits in the U.S., and to travel with my significant other and one day—children!

I grew up in New Hampshire, joined the Marines, got my bachelor’s degree in Justice Studies, and was an EMT for a while. Now I am running full stride as a photographer while working as a nurse. I specifically love working with non-

tephanie Foo is an award-winning radio writer, editor and producer who spent years burying herself in her work to avoid dealing with her past traumas. Unfortunately, the day comes when she can’t hide in her

work any more and she must face the consequences of a diagnosis of Complex PTSD. The prognosis is not good, but Foo is determined to find some kind of therapy that will work for her. She notes that for those with her diagnosis, there is no one size fits all cure. Each case is as individual as the patient.

In Part I – which is foreshadowed by a trigger warning at the beginning of the book – Foo shares the story of her cruelly

In the following four parts of the book Foo chronicles the many therapies and professionals she tries, the connections she makes and renews, the difficult exploration of the past she thought she knew so completely. Supported by her partner, his family and her found family of friends as well as a no-nonsense therapist Foo manages to find better

ways to cope than lashing out at herself or others.

This is not a spoiler – on the same page as the trigger warning Foo offers hope to her readers: This book has a happy ending.

I was impressed with the author’s courage both in her teens and as an adult as well as her resourcefulness in finding ways to survive one of the bitterest betrayals a child can face. It’s not a scar that ever disappears, but Foo meets her future with grace, courage and hope for tomorrow.

Movie screening In the latest installment of its film series, NHTI will host a screening of “Every Little Thing” on Friday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m.

“Every Little Thing” is a breathtaking award-winning documentary about the beauty of hummingbirds and efforts to rescue and care for them. Australian filmmaker Sally Aitken follows the experiences of Terry Masear, who cares for injured hummingbirds. Throughout a 93minute emotional journey, the film introduces audiences to birds named Cactus, Sugar Baby, Jimmy, and the Sidney Twins.

The film series began around 25 years ago after the closing of Cinema 93 and prior to the opening of Red River Theaters. With the goals of supporting the return of an independent movie theater and making

Concord a film destination, NHTI has hosted three Somewhat North of Boston (SNOB) film festivals and screened films not typically shown at commercial theatres in the area. The series also prioritizes films by local and regional filmmakers and, when possible, strives to bring the filmmakers to the screenings to talk about their work.

The screening will be held at Sweeney Hall Auditorium (S-122) on the NHTI campus at 31 College Drive in Concord. Parking is Free.

NHTI students can attend for free with a valid student ID. All other tickets cost $10, to be paid by cash or check, with no advance ticket sales.

Orleans brings pop-rock to Concord

W

ith hits such as “Love Takes Time, ”Dance with Me,” and “Still the One,” the smooth melodic pop-rock music of Orleans has stood the test of time in the past 53 years since the group’s formation. Bringing its music to Concord, the band will perform at the Bank of New Hampshire Stage on Thursday, Feb. 27.

Known for its tight ensemble playing, gorgeous

harmony vocals and inspired, well-crafted songwriting, Orleans formed in Woodstock, New York in 1972. John Hall and the late Larry Hoppen began what would become a decadeslong musical legacy, with Larry Hoppen’s brother Lance Hoppen joining the group soon after its inception. They released their first album in 1973 and have subsequently had numerous best-selling albums over the

years including “Let There Be Music,” “Waking and Dreaming” and “Forever.”

Orleans’ whole body of work spans over seventeen albums and four DVDs. The band—now made up of Lance Hoppen, his brother and longstanding member Lane Hoppen, and newer members Brady Spencer, Tom Lane, and Tony Hoopper—still enjoys touring together. Ahead of the Concord show, Orleans co-founding member Lance Hoppen shares more about his experiences in over five decades of making music with the group that shaped his career.

Q: What does music mean to you?

Music is a universal language that bridges all peoples, all cultures, all ideologies. Musicians speak that language with each other, even if they do not under-

stand a word of the other musician’s native tongue.

And it’s not just musicians.

Music speaks to everyone who will listen, at an emotional and even a soul level.

Music has healing powers.

Q: What’s one piece of advice you have for aspiring musicians?

For me, music is not just a job or even a career. It’s a calling. It’s what I was meant to do. I knew that truth from a very early age.

That has made all the trials, difficulties and disappointments, all the time spent studying, practicing, all the work that goes into learning the craft worth it. Yes, I was fortunate and had significant success and rewards early on, but that is not a given for everyone, no matter how good they are.

So, unless you have that drive, that calling, that fire in the belly, don’t choose

music as a career. But if you do, don’t ever give up on your dream. And in any case, do it because you love it!

Q: What is your favorite part of touring?

We don’t really “tour” anymore. More like going out for a weekend of 2 or 3 shows. And my least favorite part of it is traveling to get there and back. On the other hand, I’ve been to all 50 states and several continents and got paid to do it.

That’s not a bad perk. But my favorite part of the experience is the hour or so we spend on stage delivering our musical message, as well as meeting the fans at the merch table after the show. I love those interactive connections.

Orleans 2025 is not the same as Orleans 1975 but, in its own right, the quintet I have now is one I am very proud of, as we deliver Orleans’ music with class and integrity. I know it’s good, because the audiences say so. Prepare to smile and be pleased.

But things like college gigs with Bonnie Raitt when both she and Orleans were starting out, opening for Bob Marley & the Wailers at Paul’s Mall in Boston, touring with Jackson Brown during the summer of 1976 as “Still the One” climbed the charts, playing at Woodstock ‘95 in front of 150,000 people ... and on and on ... do stand out.

Q: What do you want audience members to take away from an Orleans performance?

Here in 2025, Orleans, the institution, is beginning its 53rd year as a live band.

There have been many different versions of the band since the original recording quartet, usually anchored by at least two or, more often, three of us. center, so she submitted to their “Salon” show and was accepted. Livingston eventually connected with the Concord Arts Market and became a vendor. These experiences built her confidence as an artist and she remains grateful for those who took her under their wing.

“I want to do that for other people too, because I know many, many people who are talented but maybe shy or unsure, or don’t have the confidence to put themselves out there,” said Livingston, who took over the Concord Arts Market last fall. “I want to be able to inspire and empower other people to participate as well.”

The Concord Arts Market has existed for almost two decades and brings together dozens of local artists and craftspeople throughout the year, notably for Art in the Park, hosted at Rollins Park in the warmer months. Vendors also participate in Concord celebrations such as the Sound & Color Festival,

Midnight Merriment, First Fridays and more, bringing an array of creations to match the season. Livingston will launch a winter version of the market in partnership with Kimball Jenkins later this month.

“It’s great to keep the arts alive all year round,” Livingston said. “I’m also a big proponent of collaborations. I think that there’s so many amazing art institutions in Concord and New Hampshire as a whole. I love to collaborate so that we can build off of each other.”

The winter market, located in the carriage house at Kimball Jenkins, aims to offer the community a chance to appreciate local craftsmanship, shop from vendors, participate in art demonstrations, and enjoy food and music.

“I’m hoping that it will be something where families or individuals can just stop by, even for an hour, to enjoy arts of all different mediums and experiences

“It was so meaningful for me how people helped me realize that I do actually have talent, and I really want to pay that forward and offer that to others,” she said. “I’m also the director of the Concord Multicultural Festival. I specialize in community events with a focus on arts and equity and inclusion. I want to be able

to grow the arts market in meaningful ways, while being inclusive and bringing in and uplifting more artists from more diverse backgrounds.”

Christine Murphy on ‘Notes on Surviving the Fire’ Fans of the film “–––– Promising Young Woman” will appreciate this edgy and unique story about trauma, female resilience, and anger that ultimately questions whether violence can ever solve violence.

Ahead of her Concord visit, Murphy shared more about her writing journey and inspiration for “Notes on Surviving the Fire.”

Q: What do you hope readers will take away from your book?

I hope readers enjoy the plot twists and turns, the atmosphere of dysfunctional higher education set amidst California wildfires, and my character’s hilarious, crass

sense of humor. I also hope readers come away from the book rethinking our understanding of violence, especially gendered violence and violence against women, and the hypocrisy with which the topic is treated in mainstream media, entertainment, and politics.

Q: What shows or movies offered you inspiration while writing the book?

I rarely watch TV! “The Golden Girls” and “Aliens” both have a cameo in the book because those are my comfort watches—I love smart, sassy broads and oldschool action movies!

Q: What was a challenge you encountered during the writing process?

My character’s voice came to me very quickly—she was loud and smart and very angry. I

found her hilarious, but other people didn’t seem to pick up on the humor.

“Likeability” is a burden for women, as artists or professionals or just humans in the world. I loved my character, but I knew she wasn’t conventionally likable. I decided not to worry about it, wrote her as she came to me, and lo and behold, people are responding to her!

Q: How does New England play into your writing?

New England imbues my writing. I have a great love of New England, and no matter where I live or have lived, I carry it with me. It pops up in my writing in a million different ways—references to foliage, our four seasons, cultural traditions of hunting, hiking, swimming in lakes…it’s all in there!

Q: What’s one piece of advice you have for aspiring writers?

Writing a novel is much like training for a marathon.

You think about it, strategize it, daydream, tell people you’re going to do it, and, eventually, you either do it or you don’t. Writing novels is impossible. Publishing them, even more so.

And yet thousands of novels are published every year, thousands more (millions?) are written, or being written right now. There is no right or wrong. Believe in your story, believe in yourself, then get off your tuchus and do it.

“Notes on Surviving the Fire” follows Sarah, a PhD student studying violence within Buddhist traditions, as she struggles to maintain the life she had before a fellow student raped her at a party. She spends her days trying to manage her anger and thirst for revenge growing stronger by the day. Her only relief comes from Nathan, her best friend and the only person who believed her when she reported her assault. When Sarah finds Nathan dead of an alleged overdose, she knows he was murdered, but no one believes her—again.

This time, Sarah will prove she’s right, tracking her best friend’s killer while California wildfires move closer and closer to campus.

As a girl, Sarah grew up in the forests of New England, following her father on hunts, learning how to stalk prey and kill, but only when necessary. Now, faced with the retribution she’s been lusting after all this time, Sarah must decide if revenge can ever be justified.
