Canterbury Shaker Village has received a $2,500,000 grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. through its Religion and Cultural Institutions Initiative. The grant will support the Village’s reinvigoration of its on-site and online interpretive experiences to emphasize the history and culture of the Shaker faith at the core of its visitor engagement strategy.

“This opportunity to share much more of the Village’s unparalleled collections is both welcome and exciting,” stated Curator of Research and Collections Shirley Wajda. “With this grant, the Village will increase both access to and knowledge of the Canterbury Shakers, their religion, and their individual and collective lives.”

Over the next five years, Canterbury Shaker Village will create a “digital Village,” developing an online database of biographies, documents, artifacts, and interactive exhibitions. This accessible database will complement and extend new interactive and immersive on-site exhibitions focusing on the Shakers’ religious beliefs and experiences. “We will reinvigorate visitors’ experiences and understanding of the Shakers and Shakerism within American and world religious history,” added Wajda.

In addition, the Village will design and institute a new staff and guide training program based on the Village’s rich historical resources. “By creating a new framework for interpretation and the training to support it, the Village will have a chance to explore the Canterbury Shakers in exciting and en-

gaging ways,” explained Director of Interpretation and Education Kyle Sandler.

“This will place their religious beliefs at the core of the visitor experience here.”

Executive Director Erin Hammerstedt said the Shakers are among the most important religious experiments in United States history. “The Shakers’ revolutionary religious ideas shocked and intrigued their contemporaries,” she noted.

“They challenged — and continue to challenge — Americans’ thinking about equality, sociality, and religious freedom. We thank Lilly Endowment for their generous support.”

Canterbury Shaker Village is one of 33 organizations across the United States receiving grants through the latest round of the Religion and Cultural Institutions Initiative. The initiative aims to support museums and other cultural organizations as they strengthen their capacity to provide fair, accurate, and balanced portrayals of the role religion has played and continues to play

Annual bird survey is Feb. 8 and 9

Bird Survey, a unique opportunity to contribute valuable data from your own backyard to help track New Hampshire’s winter bird populations. Scheduled for Feb. 8 and 9, the survey NH Audubon is calling on is open to participants all all nature enthusiasts and across the state. just starting to learn to identify the birds in your backyard, the survey is fun for all ages.

Each year dedicated people just like you participate in the Backyard Winter Bird Survey. Last year there were over 1,500 participants.

This is the 38th year of the survey. Over this time, we have seen dramatic changes both in our winters (which are getting warmer) and the birds that call NH home for the winter.

Twenty-five years ago, almost no Eastern Bluebirds stayed in NH for the winter; today, people see them

throughout much of the state during the colder months. We’ve observed steep declines in other species, like Evening Grosbeaks. This is where the value of this long-term dataset is realized, allowing us to monitor bird populations and identify critical trends.

Last year’s winter brought surprises. We recorded a record high count of Pine Warblers, a species that typically winters farther south.

We also saw record numbers of Turkey Vultures, a bird expanding its winter range northward. Wild Turkey numbers dropped, likely due to a poor

breeding season the year before. Some rare surprises included the first-ever Yellow-throated Warbler recorded in the survey—a bird that typically nests no farther north than New Jersey and usually migrates to southern Florida or the Caribbean.

Each year, Dr. Pamela Hunt, a Senior Biologist at NH Audubon, speculates on what we might see in the

upcoming survey. This year, she predicts high counts of Red-breasted Nuthatches, a species that often moves south into New Hampshire in response to dwindling food supplies up north. Additionally, she anticipates strong showings of favorites like Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Carolina Wrens, and Eastern Bluebirds.

Participation is simple: count the birds in your yard

or at your bird feeder for any amount of time on Feb. 8 and 9. Record the numbers of each species you see, then submit your data online with our easy-to-use form.

“Even if you only see a few birds, your data is valuable,” Grace encourages.

“It’s the collective effort of participants across the state that makes this survey so impactful.”

Paul Tuller for speaker series On Feb. 7 at 5 p.m., the Jaffrey Civic Center will present the fifth program in this season’s “Stories to Share” series. The speaker will be longtime woodworker Paul Tuller, who will offer a talk entitled “Japanese House in New Hampshire, a Long Journey.”

In 1987, the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center erected a Japanese timber frame as part of a summer of events focusing on Japanese culture. Paul Tuller was part of that raising. Sixteen years later, Paul bought the pieces of that timber frame and began building the Japanese House on his property in Dublin, New Hampshire.

The house features custom tatami mats, elm flooring, a kotatsu table, a tokonoma, and storm, shoji, and fusuma doors. It also has sitka spruce floor panels, a glass sliding window and an entry roof and porch. In 2020 a garden and water feature were designed for the area around the house. Excavation began in 2021, and work has been continuing since then to create a tranquil garden and pond that complement the Japanese House.

Near Longwater stands the Dark Wives monument three massive vertical stones. Legend has it that a giant turned three women into stones because he thought they talked too much. The village hosts an annual “Witch Hunt,” that brings in a lot of tourists and their dollars. It’s a local tradition where an older woman plays a witch and hides in the hills.
