The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests is hosting For the Love of My Ancestral Home, a solo art exhibit by Wakefield, Mass., artist Leslie Scott-Lysan. The exhibit features paintings inspired

by New Hampshire’s natural beauty and is open to the public for free through Jan. and Feb. at the Forest Society’s Conservation Center, 54 Portsmouth St., Concord. Viewing hours are weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., but visitors are encouraged to call 603-2249945 before arriving, as the exhibit space may be booked for meetings or events.

The show highlights Scott-Lysan’s deep personal and ancestral connection to New Hampshire, where her family roots trace back to the 1800s. A portion of proceeds from art sales will benefit the Forest Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to land conservation and sustainable forestry in New Hampshire.

Scott-Lysan’s artwork reflects her lifelong experiences in the Granite State, where she has spent time fishing, hiking, canoeing, and skiing. Many pieces in the exhibit were created during her camping trips in the White Mountains and Great North Woods. “I’ve been traveling to New Hampshire since I was a newborn,” she said. “My emotional bond to the state comes through in my paintings. Supporting the Forest Society aligns with my love for the forests and landscapes that inspire my work.”

Working in oils, acrylics, cold wax, and mixed media, Scott-Lysan is known for her impressionist plein air paintings and textured abstracts. Her recent explorations include cold wax and oil paint techniques, blending her love for color

Competition at Concord Art (MA) ■ Rockport Art Association and Museum (MA), 2023 National Juried Show, mixed media painting “Winter Woods: First Snow” Scott-Lysan’s work has appeared in publications such as Northshore Magazine and WCVB-TV Boston’s Chronicle. Her paintings have been displayed at New Hampshire venues like the Wolfeboro Public Library and resorts in Bartlett and North Conway.

A defining moment in Scott-Lysan’s artistic journey came during a 2006 trip to Monhegan Island, Maine, where she rekindled her passion for painting after a 30-year hiatus. Inspired by the island’s artists, she began sketching with watercolor pencils and later studied with prominent New England artists, including Mary Taggart, Aline Ordman, and Debra Claffey.

The book reflects on Boylan’s journey, comparing her experiences of coming out as trans in 2000—when responses were often characterized by love and support—with the current cultural climate, which has seen increased fear and backlash.

Boylan examines how gender shapes self-perception, body image, and interpersonal connections. She reflects on her womanhood, her relationships with men, and her evolving identity as a writer, parent, activist, and spouse. Combining humor and poignancy, Boylan provides an honest look at the complexities of navigating life in two genders while offering hope for a world where everyone can live authentically.

Jennifer Finney Boylan is the author of 19 books, including the groundbreaking memoir She’s Not There, the first bestselling work by a transgender American. She co-authored the novel Mad

Boylan holds the Anna Quindlen Writer in Residence position at Barnard College and has served in leadership roles at PEN America and GLAAD. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, and more.

Film screening The acclaimed film “Black Dog” will be shown on Friday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. in the Sweeney Hall Auditorium (S122) on the campus of NHTI, 31 College Drive.

Winner of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival “Un Certain Regard” Award, “Black Dog” is a noir-inspired mystery about redemption and change. The film follows Lang, played by internationally renowned actor Eddie Peng, as he returns to his hometown in Northwest China after being released from jail. Facing his troubled past, Lang takes work rounding up stray dogs in preparation for the 2008 Olympics as his town undergoes demolition for urban re-

newal. He forms an unexpected bond with a stray black dog, creating a poignant narrative of two solitary souls finding redemption.

The film, directed by an emerging voice in Chinese cinema, features extraordinary cinematography that captures the stark beauty of the Gobi Desert and the emotional depth of its story. It is in Chinese with English subtitles and runs 116 minutes.

Winter Fest returns with food trucks Concord’s Winter Fest returns next weekend, Friday, Jan 24-Saturday, Jan. 25, and it’s bigger than ever.

In its seventh year, the event, put on by InTown Concord, will include its staple events, like the icecarving competition, but will now include a food truck festival and a hot cocoa tour.

Ice carving begins with demonstrations on Friday with a chance to meet some

of the most talented sculptors in the region.

The competition is set for between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday.

This is an outdoor event, so InTown Concord reminds attendees to dress for winter.

In eight fantastical stories you will find ghosts, possession by a plant spirit, a drowned Florida, Madame Bovary’s greyhound, a boy in love with a perfectly preserved bog body, a woman who believes she must nurse the devil to keep her own child alive, a doctor whose task is to ensure that the dead stay that way, and tornado ranchers.

Yes, these people buy, sell and raise tornados to full strength.

From the peat bogs of Ireland to Joshua Tree National Park in California, from Oregon to the remains of Miami, from provincial France to the Nebraska plains, to an is-

land in the Mediterranean, ordinary people struggle with supernatural events and beings. Most of the protagonists are relatable or may be like someone you’ve known. You can see how they got into these terrible situations but how will they ever get out of them?

Russell’s writing draws you in and makes you care about the outcomes in each and every story. It’s not easy to fit such complete adventures in the short story form but she rises to the challenge admirably. It is fascinating to explore these disparate worlds and meet all these characters.

I’m delighted to find that she has several more story collections as well as a novel so that I can continue to meet new characters and new worlds for some time.

TKF raises money to support youth camping programs like Boy Scouts of America and 4-H through programs like scholarships for camp staff and grants to improve summer camp programs. WPIAA plans events for the WPI alumni population and serves as a bridge between the alumni, students, and school.

What’s your favorite place to go in Concord?

When I’m in Concord, I almost always stop at Teatotaller. I love grabbing boba tea and some baked goods before continuing my day. If I have more free time, I’ll go to Lilise Designer Resale (LDR) to search for some cool fashion pieces.

What’s your favorite memory in Concord? After a CYPN event, I went out to dinner with friends and was telling them about how in the ska music scene, there’s a dance called “skanking”

which has limbs going everywhere. As we left the restaurant, one friend wanted to learn the dance, so I taught her. We were just laughing away on the sidewalk while dancing, having the time of our lives. Latenight random silliness is the best! (Shoutout to Connor Spern!)

What’s your favorite restaurant in Concord?

Street Restaurant is awesome. The menu is a little eclectic, with options for every type of appetite, but everything is packed with flavor! One of my favorites is the Crispy Rice Cake.

What do you like to do for fun? I play baritone saxophone in a New Orleansstyle brass band year-round and play multiple instruments with a cover band for a yearly Key Foundation fundraiser. I love to play board games with friends, with Ticket to Ride being one of my favorites!

Tell us a few interesting facts about yourself! I’m a self-taught wood-burning

artist (also known as pyrography). During the pandemic, I enjoyed surprising friends with customized art pieces sent by mail to help keep spirits bright. Pieces

during that time included pet portraits, scenes from recent weddings, and elements of a friend’s favorite Dungeons and Dragons character.

nation of hands-on machining and engineering drawing classes I took there led to an interest in mechanical engineering, so I went to Worcester Polytechnic Institute for a degree in this field. I’m currently pursuing a second bachelor’s degree in non-profit management through an online program at Bay Path University!

What organizations are you involved with? I’m the co-founder of The Affirming Spaces Project, a nonprofit organization that trains New England businesses on gender-inclusive practices, to help make welcoming spaces for people of all gender identities and presentations. Once trained, we put the businesses on our website and social media pages as a free tool for the transgender community and their allies to find safe and welcoming places to patronize. Since we launched in August 2021, we’ve trained almost 90 businesses!

“The Magnify Voices contest provides a forum for youth to share their stories and raise awareness about mental health,” said Deb Jurkoic, committee member and NAMI New Hampshire Family Network Coordinator. “These works continue to make an impact as they are shared statewide, allowing the artists to engage with their communities.”

Jan. 16, 2000: The number of cardiac surgeries at the New England Heart Institute in Manchester has dropped by 17% since the opening of rival centers in Concord and Portsmouth. The Manchester hospital has fought to prevent Concord and Portsmouth from performing heart surgeries since 1995, when they first asked the state for permission.

Jan. 16, 1944: All flying and ground school aviation training is suddenly called to halt at Concord Airport. A private flying school under contract with the government had turned out more than 650 pilots for the War Training Service.

Jan. 16, 1991: New Hampshire, along with the rest of the world, watches the start of the television war as U.S. missiles rain on Iraq.

Jan. 17, 2003: A committee reviewing the Diocese of Manchester’s sexual abuse policy calls for greater laity involvement in the Catholic Church’s internal affairs, more thorough screening of

priests and the creation of a central database of church personnel records. The recommendations follow nearly four months of investigations by the 12-person panel, appointed by Bishop John McCormack, into the diocese’s handling of allegations of sexual misconduct by priests.

Jan. 17, 2001: New Hampshire Public Radio announces plans to scrap its classical and jazz programming in favor of news and arts-oriented features. The change in format will prompt a lot of angry letters to the

editor, but NHPR will go on to enjoy a record fundraising campaign.

the offer.

Jan. 18, 1982: New Hampshire is rattled by the worst earthquake in 42 years. In Concord, a city council meeting has just gotten under way. As Mayor David Coeyman gavels the meeting to order, the windows begin shaking and papers begin shuffling. “I will always remember this,” Coeyman says.
