A love story comes to the Players’ Ring Theatre The extraordinary love story of Fyodor Dostoevsky and the woman who became “the architect of his life,” will be on stage at the Players’ Ring Theatre in Portsmouth, from Jan. 3 through the 19, written and directed by Richard McElvain.

When his unscrupulous publisher had a gun to his head to complete a book in a month, Fyodor Dostoevsky reached out to a school that taught a new science called stenography. The woman he hired, Anna, would soon become his indispensable collaborator, his lover, his wife and eventually his publisher.

climbed to become one of the greatest novelists of all time.

McElvain was in Saint Petersburg performing his one-person-play “The Chess Player,” at The Bolshoi Drama Theatre, a high point in his theatre career. One day after the show was up, and he had some time, he visited Dostoevsky's home with his partner Lynda Robinson.

“His place has been turned into a museum, and I am a fan of his works,” McElvain said. “It was a thrill walking up the stairs he walked up every day and seeing the desk where he worked. There were cards you could read in each room and in the dining room the card read ‘In this room Dostoevsky dictated his novels to his second wife Anna.

A love story comes to the Players’ Ring Theatre

McElvain said he “was shocked.”

“I never knew he dictated his works,” he recounted. “I later found out that he was an amateur actor. He would do spellbinding readings of his works and Tolstoy’s. So, I suddenly got this image of him ‘acting out’ his work as Anna took it down. With a little more research, I found that she became his collaborator in the process – and that they were hopelessly in love. So, it was easy to imagine this as a crackling two hander play.”

McElvain said everyone loves a good love story.

“Isn’t it a little astonishing that the story of Fyodor and Anna is one of the great love stories?” he asked. “The appeal to fans of his work is obvious. If you don't know his work it is a very audience friendly journey into the life of one of the greatest writers who ever put pen to page.

McElvain said the story is action packed and often very funny. The couple fought great battles with his epilepsy, gambling addiction, bullying publishers and crushing debt. She enters his life as his scribe and the audience has his brilliant works today because of Anna and their indefatigable love.

The style of the production is very theatrical, often daffy, lots of delightfully shocking devices. Jocelyn Duford and Tomer Oz are the two superb actors who took on the challenge of playing about 20 roles, including allegorical characters like his Epilepsy and his Gambling Addiction. Expect fabulous masks and cos-

tumes, puppets and a dramatic soundscape that underscores the whole show.

Set, lighting, and projections are designed by Billie Butler; costume design by Jennifer Greeke; sound design by Larry Buckley and Noah Kammer; prop design

by Annie Stone; and dance choreography by Leslie Gallagher and Adele Jones. The production’s stage manager is Emily Andrews. This is a Players’ Ring Production in collaboration with Theatre Omnibus.

“The Players’ Ring feels like a good place to give my wacky play a first full production. Whenever I read the play with my partner, it overwhelms us emotionally.

It’s a ‘big play’. At the readings audiences gave it

standing ovations with tears in their eyes. I'm very curious to see if that will be the case with a full production,” McElvain said.

McElvain has been working professionally as an actor, director, playwright and teacher for 45 years, mostly in the Boston area.

He has won the Elliot Norton Award and the IRNE award for his performance in “Saint Nicholas,” a monodrama by Conor McPherson. For the last several years he has been touring “The Chess Player” internationally, mostly in Europe and the Middle East.

scribed in the book lived an immigrant experience defined more by loss than by gain, as hard work was no guarantee of success or even survival. The author avoids the yellow-hued nostalgia of days past, instead describing immigrant life for what it really was – an uncertain battle with periods of unemployment, failed ventures, the burdens of illness or injury, terrible working conditions, and untimely deaths. Conflict comes from the family’s lack of opportunity in America – and although conditions were much better than Italy- it still carried high risks given the competitiveness in an economy with an abundance of cheap labor and few protections for workers or entrepreneurs. There is also conflict between people in positions of more and less power; from older

to younger brothers, to inequalities between the roles for men and women, with ongoing tensions between native and immigrant forces.

The black and white book cover photo shows the two main characters in early 19th century clothing, with stern faces staring into the camera lens. The storyline follows the journey of these people, Rocco Grappone and Emanuela d’Orlando, who emigrated separately from Italy and met in America. Rocco is a character with an uncertain past who pursues his family tradition of stone cutting to make a better life for himself and his family. The records are not clear if Rocco escaped Italy to avoid organized crime or if he got mixed up with criminal elements once he arrived in America. Either way, he

rises above these struggle and commits to the hard, honest work of a family man. Emanuela or ‘Emma’ is the rock solid woman at the home front, yet she also works with her daughters in nearby factories to keep the family afloat financially or save for that next business venture. In her life, Emma bore six children and lost two, all the while managing a large garden and livestock for supporting a growing family, helping neighbors, and even feeding the passing homeless.

The book tells a sweeping story of immigrant struggles over an extended period of social instability and integration into a new, difficult world. Until you read a book like this one, it’s easy to forget how dangerous the work conditions were, how often businesses failed, and how extended family was

the primary safety net against illness, injury, death, and other misfortunes.

The book covers interesting events from the period, including a 1919 car tour of the ‘Four Vagabonds’ that included industrialist Henry Ford, inventor Thomas Edison, tire guy Harvey Firestone, and the naturalist John Burroughs.

This quartet of famous Americans rode with family, friends and reporters on a 50-car convoy to demonstrate that automobile travel was both reliable and adventurous even on the rough roads of New Hampshire.

Overall, “The Founding” met its goal of telling a captivating history of uncertain times where two people held together an extended immigrant family, took care of their neighbors, and

founded a fledgling automobile company. The book describes how families struggled and survived an onslaught of troubles, while taking big chances with the limited capital they saved as day laborers and factory workers. Readers familiar with downtown Concord may also enjoy references to local landmarks that remain after a century, including the State House, Phenix Hall, and the Waters Funeral Home.

The author, Amanda Grappone Osmer, is the great-granddaughter of the main characters and now the co-owner of the automobile company called Grappone Automotive based in Bow and Concord.

The book is currently available at Gibson’s Bookstore in Concord and multiple locations across the region.

They shake hands with John Tyler, mingle with the large crowd, then leave to visit John Quincy Adams and pay him “the compliments of the season.”

Jan. 2, 1920: Federal agents and local authorities

team up to arrest 260 men in eight New Hampshire cities and towns. The arrests come in the Palmer raids, a national dragnet to round up “radical aliens.” The Justice Department plans to deport the immigrants to ward off a Bolshevik revolution in the United States.

Jan. 3, 2003: Nearly 1,000 attend the funeral of Father Richard Lower, a priest at Our Lady of Fatima Church in New London, a week after his apparent suicide following allegations of sexual abuse.

Jan. 3, 1990: Brenda Elias is sworn in as Franklin’s mayor. “The people obviously wanted a change,” says defeated incumbent Chet Wickens. “Hard work doesn’t scare me,” says Elias.

Jan. 3, 1852: Visiting Concord, Henry Hubbard slips on the icy walkway on his way to the Eagle Hotel. The fall breaks his left arm. Hubbard will sue the town and win a judgment of $800.

Jan. 3, 1870: An aurora borealis appears. At 4 a.m., “the northern portion of the sky was nearly all aflame,” a patriotic observer writes. Directly overhead, “Streamers of red, white and blue were seen streaking up from the horizon.”

Jan. 3, 1983: Schools and most state buildings are closed for an official day of mourning as Gov. Hugh Gallen is buried. Hometown friends and family fill a simple wood-and-stone church in Littleton for the funeral Mass. The Rev. Patrick Irwin eulogizes Gallen as a compassionate man who “died hoping the future would be kind” to the less fortunate. Earlier, Gallen was honored in a public memorial service at the State House. More than 1,200 people attended, including former President Jimmy Carter.

Jan. 3, 1979: The Washington Post reports that a collection of Robert Frost

memorabilia has been donated to the University of New Hampshire. The collection includes a copy of New Hampshire inscribed by Frost to his wife in 1923. The work later won him the first of four Pulitzer Prizes.

Among the other items in the collection: a patchwork quilt made from the academic hoods received by the poet.

Jan. 4, 1859: The Coos Republican of Lancaster prints a list of all town residents who had died the year before - and the cause of death. The tally: 11 from consumption, 3 from apoplexy, four from typhoid fever, 3 from lung fever, 1 from scarlet fever, two from inflammation of the bowels, 2 from conges-

tion of the lungs, 1 from cancer, 1 from paralysis and one from old age. Of those 29 deaths, more than half were under 30 years old.

Jan. 4, 2001: Elizabeth McLaughlin, a 101-year-old resident of Concord’s Havenwood-Heritage Heights Retirement Community, gets some extra attention for a day after being invited to the governor’s inaugural address at the State House. “It (was) a day I never expected,” McLaughlin says later. “I’m not an important girl at all.”

Jan. 4, 1950: The temperature in Concord climbs to 68 degrees, making this the warmest January day of the 20th century.

Jan. 5, 2002: The Concord police found firsthand evidence of methamphetamine’s creeping presence last month in an attic crawlspace on Northeast Village Street, the Monitor reports. There, in the Heights home, officers found a pH tester and chemical bottles. Methamphetamine, also known at “crank” and “speed,” has long been a top concern for law enforcement officials in the West and Midwest. But only recently has the narcotic turned up in New England, law enforcement officials said.

five Provincial Congresses in New Hampshire, delegates adopt a temporary constitution. The document makes New Hampshire an independent colony six months before the colonies jointly declare their independence. Recalling the objectionable actions of recently departed Royal Gov. John Wentworth, the

framers make no provision for a governor. Meschech Weare becomes New Hampshire’s president. The permanent state constitution will not take effect until June 1784.
