he Concord Chorale will present Winter Cheer! on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 15, at 3 p.m., at South Church, 27 Pleasant St., Concord. This festive concert will feature seasonal music performed by the Chorale, accompanied by a brass quintet and The Purple Finches youth choir from the Concord Community Music School.

The program celebrates winter and the joy that can be found during the colder months. The Chorale hopes to uplift its audience with

pieces such as John Rutter’s When Icicles Hang, Bob Chilcott’s Wenceslas, and a variety of traditional carols.

The Purple Finches, directed by Maria Isaak, will perform two pieces independently and join the Chorale for Chilcott’s Wenceslas. In this piece, members of The Purple Finches will sing the part of the Page, soloists from the Chorale will perform the role of King Wenceslas, and the ensemble will provide the choral parts.

A highlight of the concert is the song The Lesson, which includes the line, “I can cheer another soul by a carol’s simple art.” This sentiment reflects the Concord Chorale’s aim to bring

Local director captures New England history Featuring Vermont in historical action drama

I’ll play my new film, “Lost Nation,” at Concord’s Red River Theatres, Dec. 13 through Dec. 19. The picture is a Revolutionary Warera action drama set in the early upstart Republic of Vermont – which considered itself, crucially, as a vital part of the Province of New Hampshire, up to the moment of Vermont’s founding and declaration as an independent republic in on Jan. 15, 1777.

I say “crucially” because this territory, between the Connecticut River and Lake Champlain, was hotly contested – between New Hampshire and New York, at that time.

Wealthy semi-feudal New York landholders like the

Rensselaers and Van Cortlandts claimed to own tracts of 300,000 and 400,000 acres in this territory – land that they had, for the most part, never even seen. Identifying this lack of settlement as an opportunity, New Hampshire Governor Benning Wentworth (17411766) claimed this same land in his highly controversial effort to expand the borders of his province.

Wentworth began selling 50 and 100-acre parcels to poor farmers and settlers, many of them veterans of the French and Indian Wars, who returned home to southern New England and found the good properties already taken. Wentworth chartered 131 towns in the territory – including his

namesake, Bennington. He kept a piece of each new municipality’s land and a share of the cash proceeds for himself.

Royal courts ruled in favor of New York – but Wentworth persisted, and the settlers claimed their New Hampshire Grants as the basis for a protracted armed conflict and land struggle against New York.

This New Hampshire/New York/Vermont conflict was one of three during this time, the others taking place in North Carolina and the Hudson River Valley. It was the only one where the poor settlers prevailed.

“Is this Jay?” “It is,” I said, still expecting to be offered a new option for Medicare.

“My name’s Bob…” the man said, barely pausing for breath,“…in St. Louis. And I never call people about this but I’m one of the prescreeners for the St, Louis Film Festival and I watched your film, “Lost Nation,” last night and it’s the best film I’ve ever seen in my life.”

“Wow,” I said. “Thanks a lot. And thanks for taking the time to call.”

“No problem,” he said. “I just love your film. But that doesn’t mean it will actually be programmed. I have no control over that.”

“I get it. But can I use your quote on our poster?” I said, half joking. “The Best Film I’ve Ever Seen.” - Bob from St. Louis.

We both laughed.

We drew our film research from 162 books – I know because we recently donated them to the St. Johnsbury Academy library in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. But historical films are always fictional because, no matter how much research you do, you can never know the individual moments of an historical character’s life. Each of them did and said things we’ll never know about – even the modern ones.

When you go back 250 years – anything could have happened. That said, every dramatic beat in the film was measured against the research.

I was first drawn to the Ethan Allen story in 1974,

tance to New Yorker land claims, launches an ill-fated attack on British forces in Montreal, and leads invasions by his Green Mountain Boys into Yorker strongholds of Guilford and Brattleboro.

“Lost Nation’s” parallel and intersecting story also features pioneering poet, Lucy Terry Prince, who was enslaved at the age of 3 in western Massachusetts – and, using a New Hampshire grant, settled a Guilford homestead with her family during this same time.

Like Ethan Allen, the Princes found themselves caught up in turbulent times that threatened their prospects for the land and freedom they sought. In those days, land was everything – a measure of status, standing and a chance for prosperity and community engagement.

Like Ethan Allen, Lucy Prince upset the status quo in her assertive use of early Vermont’s legal and political systems. Ethan did it to push back New York land claims to property in the Green Mountains. Lucy did it to defend her family and secure their homestead.

Our tour is still new – we’ll play 100 New England towns. We’ve been attracting solid crowds. And I had an encouraging sign while driving last summer to southern New England to see Neil Young in concert.

Near Amherst, I got a random call on my cellphone. I expected it to be a junk call but a gravelly voice on the other end of the call seemed real.

after I broke my right arm bailing out of a runaway farm truck and spent winter afternoons at the Vermont Historical Society research room, scrawling handwritten notes on yellow legal pads. Now, 50 years later, I’m taking this long imagined but newly produced film on the road.

With “Lost Nation,” I took what I learned from historical research to build a sometimes-surprising story. One revelation – just the amount of turbulence, strife and dramatic action during the late 18th century, in this region, from whippings and land confiscations to fires set to settle political scores. Ethan Allen led two invasions into southeastern Vermont towns, arresting settlers who supported New York.

The wild west had nothing on what happened in our region during this time.

I hoped to capture an indelible moment that shows

the complexity and power of an early version of the “American Dream” – and the promise of the American Revolution.

This film was quite challenging to produce, because it was filmed on more than 40 locations, needed to include battle scenes, and has 43 speaking parts for characters including Ethan Allen, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and more. One fun fact: Boston patriot Samuel Adams is played in the film by his actual direct descendent, Samuel Adams.

Financing the project was also difficult, with extensive grass-roots fundraising, including a $100,000 Kickstarter campaign and a very generous benefit concert performed for us in Burlington by Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Jackson Browne. It is also important to note the I produced the film through my Semester

Cinema project, where 30 professionals mentor and collaborate with 45 professionals, to make an ambitious, fully- professional film for national release.

So, this was a very difficult project. The British playwright and film director, David Hare, stopped making films because he said his best experiences on a film set always meant the film would fail – and the most difficult times indicated surefire success.

I’ve got my fingers crossed.

“Lost Nation,” will be screened from Friday, December 13 th through Thursday, December 19 th at the Red River Theatres in Concord, NH. Where do you live?

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do. I am Development Manager at the Capitol Center for the Arts, where I’ve been for just about two years. I love development work and the way it connects me with so many different people.

Being a musical person my whole life, I really believe in the CCA’s mission to bring high-quality performances and entertainment to everyone in the community.

What’s your favorite part of your workday? I love helping my donors with ticket orders. It’s a lot of fun to learn what kind of

shows/artists people like, and they often surprise me!

Getting to know their favorite seats in the theater, who likes to pick up tickets in person at the Box Office, etc.—it all makes the connection with our supporters more personal and gratifying.

What organizations are you involved with? Singing is a huge part of my life, and I sing with two choirs in Concord. I am a singer in the Concord Chorale, where I am a Board member as well as Chair of the Fundraising Committee. I also sing as a section leader with the choir at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. I’m so grateful for both opportunities to be a part of the music community in Concord.

Where did you go to school? I grew up in Merrimack, NH and went to Mastricola Elementary School, then stayed in the Merrimack school system through to Merrimack High School. I attended Endicott College in

Beverly, MA where I graduated with a BA in Liberal Studies and minored in English.

What’s your favorite place to go in Concord? I love visiting Penumbra. It always brightens my day to stop by and find a new plant or a gift for a friend. It’s a business I love to show people who are new to or visiting Concord.

What do you like to do for fun? In my free time I love singing, baking, exercising, going to the movies, and spending time with friends and family. I love living close to my niece and nephew and being a part of their lives as they grow up.

Who would you really like to meet? I would love to meet Claire Saffitz. Her cookbooks and cooking videos really sparked my love of baking, and her YouTube channel is a comfort watch for me.

The renovations, which took place over the summer, focused on the Coit Dining Hall and aimed to enhance the dining experience for students and COURTESY staff.

dors of Coit Dining Hall were updated with new finishes and trim work, creating a refreshed, modern aesthetic throughout the space. These updates contribute to the overall functionality and visual appeal of the dining hall.

Congress and a Portsmouth merchant, is appointed to oversee the construction of one of them, a 32-gun frigate to be built at Portsmouth. It will be called the Raleigh.

Dec. 14, 1999: For the first time in more than a decade, the Concord teachers union authorizes its leadership to call for a strike vote if a settlement on a new three-year contract is not reached within the week.

John Langdon, a merchant, gathers in downtown Portsmouth in response to British strong-arm tactics, including a ban on the importation of guns and powder. The crowd ignores the royal governor’s efforts to disperse it and marches on Fort William and Mary, where the garrison of six British soldiers wisely surrenders. The crowd hauls down the British colors and carries off 100 barrels of gun powder, some of which will be used in the Battle of Bunker Hill.

Dec, 14, 1799: Tobias Lear of Portsmouth, hired

by George Washington in 1784 to manage his land, is at Washington’s side when he dies at Mount Vernon. “I am just going,” Washington says to Lear. “Have me decently buried. Do you understand me?” “Yes, sir,” Lear replies. ” ‘Tis well,” Washington says. Lear is holding Washington’s hand when he dies.

Dec. 14, 1984: The six New England governors agree to support a uniform drinking age of 21. Only Rhode Island’s is currently 21. New Hampshire’s is 20.

Dec. 14, 1880: More than 300 people show up for a holiday levee in Contoocook. James O’Connor wins first prize in the drawing: a barrel of flour.

Other prizes include a whip, a horse blanket and a buffalo robe.

Dec. 15, 2001: Regularly scheduled Amtrak service from Portland to Boston, with three stops in New Hampshire, begins, marking the return of passenger trains after a 36-year absence.

Dec. 15, 1999: Gilmanton Police Chief Bud Salmon retires after 15½ years as chief, prompting many who know him to praise the tone he set for the department.

“Some people joke that it’s Mayberry out here,” Sgt. Vinnie Baiocchetti says. “If that’s true, give me May-

berry.”

Dec. 15, 1774: On the third day of unrest in Portsmouth since the warning visit of Paul Revere, Major John Sullivan of Durham rides in with another mob of defenders.

Upon learning that word of the approach of British troops is a false rumor, the crowd agrees to disperse. It reneges on this promise, however, marching that night to Fort William and Mary at New Castle and hauling off 16 cannons and 60 muskets.

Dec. 15, 1836: The Legislature votes to accept an $892,115 grant from Washington - but only after chiding the federal government for “degrading the states and reducing them to servile dependence.” The money will be divvied up among the towns.

Dec. 16, 1979: Rachel Adams, wife of former governor Sherman Adams, dies at her home in Lincoln. She was first lady from 1949 to 1953 and joined her husband in Washington when he was assistant to President Dwight Eisenhower from 1953 through 1958.

An artist and author, she published an autobiography, “On the Other Hand,” in 1963.

Dec. 16, 2001: Spouses and children, parents and siblings gather at the former

Pease Air Force base to say goodbye to 36 members of the Air National Guard’s 157th Air Refueling Wing.

The group ships out in the early evening, bound for a location somewhere in Europe.

Dec. 16, 1976: Gov. Mel Thomson announces he will have state troopers stationed at border liquor stores to harass out-of-state tax agents who sometimes try to catch consumers from their states buying New Hampshire’s cheap booze.

The agents, he says, will be questioned, photographed and asked to produce identification.

Dec. 16, 1773: On the day of the Boston Tea Party, Portsmouth holds a town meeting and passes a resolve designed to prevent the landing of any tea.

Dec. 16, 1965: A new state report shows public libraries in New Hampshire spend an average of $2.32 per resident. Concord tops the list at $4.06 per resident. Book readership is also up statewide, to 6.71 books per resident per year.

Dec. 17, 1979: New Hampshire’s multi-million dollar ski industry, already plagued by high fuel prices, is getting nervous about the winter. With just five days until the start of Christmas vacation, only six of the

Not only has there been a shortage of natural snow, but warm weather has hindered artificial snowmaking operations. Ski area operators are praying for a heavy snowfall before Christmas to bail them out of a potential financial disaster, the Associated Press reports.

Dec. 17, 2000: A 7-weekold girl dies in an early morning fire at a Pittsfield apartment building. Though seriously injured, the girl’s mother and 23-month-old brother will survive.

Dec. 17, 1951: The temperature in Concord falls to 22 below zero, making this the coldest December day of the 20th century.

Dec. 17, 1828: Ralph Waldo Emerson, who is under serious consideration for the job of assistant pastor to the Second Church in Boston (the Mathers’ church), visits Concord. He and Ellen Tucker, whom he met the previous Christmas, become engaged to marry.

Dec. 17, 1997: The New Hampshire Supreme Court rules that the state’s method

of paying for public schools with local property taxes is unconstitutional.

Dec. 17, 1808: Three years after a state prison is proposed in Concord, the Legislature authorizes a committee of three to accept bids for building one. It will be nearly four years before the prison opens on North States Street at Tremont Street. It will be a three-story, 36-cell structure surrounded by granite walls three feet thick and 14 feet high. The cost: $37,000.

Dec. 17, 1992: Gov. Judd Gregg orders a pagan symbol removed from the State House lawn. The young man who erected it goes to court, where Steven McAuliffe, in his first major decision as a federal judge, overrules Gregg’s order.

Dec. 18, 1999: Bradford residents celebrate the renovation of the town library, a $295,000 project that doubled the building’s size without any taxpayer contributions. The fund-raising effort had begun in 1970, when a bake sale brought in $198.
