‘The Crucible’ on Colonial stage Witchcraft comes to the Colonial Theatre this October with Powerhouse Theatre Collaborative’s gripping production of Arthur Miller’s classic play, The Crucible.

Written as an allegory to the Red Scare/McCarthy Trials of the early 1950’s, Miller takes us back to 1692 Salem, Massachusetts as witchcraft hysteria reaches the Puritan townspeople. The Salem Witchcraft trials have long brought attention to Salem and fascinated the world, often through productions of Miller’s play, a mix of historical fact and dramatized fiction.

The play begins with the aftermath of the local reverend discovering his daughter and niece dancing in the woods - a shocking scandal for the era! Suddenly powerless girls facing beatings for their sacrile-

gious act become powerful finger pointers when the adults in the community decide blaming witches for the ills in their community is the best remedy.

Just about all the deadly sins are on full display as characters work to keep themselves out of the hangman’s noose while taking out their enemies.

The cast is a mix of Powerhouse regulars and newcomers and is led by Kenny Aber as John Proctor, Laura Iwaskiewicz as Elizabeth Proctor, and Amanda Wagner as Abigail Williams. The cast of 21 is led by director Bryan Halperin, assisted by Debbi Finkelstein and stage managed by Merrie Compagna.

According to Assistant Director Finkelstein, “The Salem Witch Trials have lived on in the imaginations of Americans since the 18th century. Miller’s

take on the event helps to bring the paranoia and hysteria to life for modern audiences, adding in a sexy twist, while also holding up a mirror to ourselves, showing that some things never change - from 1692 to the 1950s to today.”

A significant recurring theme in this book is How could a person be struggling so deeply, yet go on working in a high-profile government position for so long? If we could crack that code, perhaps tragedies like this could be prevented in the future.

While Ortiz’ killing spree spanned an active period of less than two weeks in 2018, this book starts many years earlier, taking us through Ortiz’ slow devolution from a devout young Navy corpsman to a paranoid, misogynistic assassin. He rose to a supervisory role within U.S. Border Patrol, a unit of the Department of Homeland Security that became increasingly militarized in the years following 9/11. Ortiz joined the Border Patrol hoping to use his skills and education to help migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. Unfortunately, dark seeds had already been planted in his psyche. A tour in Iraq as a military medic

left him struggling with PTSD, which he treated with a cocktail of prescribed medications combined with heavy alcohol use. For years, Ortiz was somehow able to hide his inner turmoil, maintaining a career in law enforcement and raising three children in the suburbs with his wife, Daniella. By the time his internal struggles boiled over into the uncontrollable, Ortiz fancied himself some kind of a vigilante, “cleaning up the streets” of Laredo according to his own personal agenda.

In typical serial killer fashion, Ortiz deliberately targeted vulnerable individuals. The four women that he murdered—plus a fifth victim, who narrowly escaped kidnapping at gunpoint—were living on society’s margins, struggling with drug addiction and scraping out a meagre living through sex work. What struck me most about this book is that the author really took the time to give a voice and a personality to each of these victims: Melissa Ramirez, Claudine

Luera, Chelly Cantu, Janelle Ortiz, and Erika Peña. While analyzing Ortiz’ background and behavior is essential to understanding what happened (and hopefully preventing similar tragedies), Jarvis never lets readers lose sight of the human lives at the true center of this story.

These were women who were loved and who had futures ahead of them, and all of their potential was senselessly snuffed out.

This book is impeccably researched, drawing lines of dialogue directly from bodycam footage, police interviews, and years of oneon-one interaction with those closest to the case. It covers important social themes that impact not just the Texas border, but towns and cities all over 21st-century America: mental healthcare, opioid addiction, veterans’ affairs, law enforcement transparency, toxic masculinity, the criminalization of sex work, who wields power and privilege, and who goes unseen at the margins of our communities. Have a Spanish dictionary or a translation app handy while you’re reading; Jarvis uses liberal Spanish and Spanglish words and phrases throughout.

Players present ‘It Can’t Happen Here’ A satirical take on if a demagogue become POTUS It Can’t Happen Here, a play by Sinclair Lewis, will be presented in an enhanced staged reading by the Community Players of Concord on Oct. 24 and 25 at 7 p.m. at the West Street Ward House, 41 West St., in Concord.

In 1936, as fascism was taking hold in Europe, Sinclair Lewis wrote It Can’t Happen Here, a satiric novel that imagines the rise of a demagogue who becomes president of the United States. Lewis adapted the novel for the stage and it was produced by the WPA’s Federal Theatre Project on Oct. 27, 1936, opening simultaneously in 21 U.S. theatres in 17 states. The Community Players presents an

update to Lewis’ prescient work in this 2016 adaptation by Tony Taccone and Bennett S. Cohen. The play examines what brings citizens to the point of sacrificing their freedoms, and the efforts of those who try and overcome the fall of democracy.

This workshop production is directed by Glenn Stuart, Professor Emeritus of Theatre at New England College and longtime friend, performer and director of the Players. The cast includes a number of actors familiar to Players’ audiences, including Wayland Bunnell, Kevin Guimond, Erik Hodges, , Sharon Paquette, David Preece, Doug Schwartz, Greg Stuart,

Project Story, a community organization dedicated to supporting the children of Concord’s refugee and culturally diverse families, is proud to announce a new partnership with the Capitol Center for the Arts.

Beginning this fall, Project Story will utilize space generously donated by the Capitol Center for after-school activities aimed at fostering education, creativity, and community connection for these children.

To celebrate this new partnership, both organizations will be hosting a ribbon cutting at 1 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the Capitol Center for the Arts (44 South Main Street, Concord).

This event is open to the public.

This collaboration will provide a safe and inspiring environment for children to engage in a variety of programs, including homework help, leadership exercises, arts and crafts, storytelling, and dance activities. With the Capitol Center’s central location and welcoming atmosphere, Project Story will have a dedicated space to expand its services and continue its mission of empowering all of Concord’s families.

The land is considered the backbone of northern New Hampshire’s economy due to the timber industry and the tourism it attracts for snowmobiling, fishing, canoeing, hunting, hiking and bird-watching.

Oct. 10, 1774: Reacting to the Intolerable Acts and Britain’s closing of Boston Harbor, a special town meeting in Portsmouth votes to send 200 pounds to Boston for poor relief.
