Tourism has been an area of focus this year for the Meredith Historical Society, and the next program in the society’s speaker series will focus on a key venue of that industry.

Dean Dexter of Concord, whose family has a manygenerations-long association with Lake Wicwas, will be the featured speaker at the October 1 program titled “The Smiths of Wicwas Lodge.”

Dexter grew up in Laconia, spending summers during his childhood at a family cottage on Lake Wicwas “in the shadow of a great summer boarding house,” he said. Set on a hill overlooking the lake, Wicwas Lodge was also a working farm operated by his grandparents on land owned by the Smith family since the 1800s.

It replaced the Wicwas Lake House, which was destroyed by fire in 1935. A large four-story edifice, the Lake House was where his grandfather Joseph Smith Jr. and siblings grew up. The Smiths went on to become successful in business, education, veterinary medicine, and politics.

Dean Dexter has had a long career in journalism and public service. He is a past president of the Lake Wicwas Association and a current board member. He is a former editor and reporter for two former Lakes Region newspapers, The Laconia News and Laconia Evening Citizen. He also served a stint as editorial writer for the Manchester Union Leader; for several years was contributing editor of New Hampshire Magazine; and conducted a public issues interview pro-

Poets talk about Mike Pride WILMOT – Donald Hall, Jane Kenyon and Maxine Kumin, three distinguished local poets featured in Mike Pride’s Northern Voices: Forty Years on the Poetry Beat will be remembered in a talk by Mark Travis on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. at the Wilmot Community Association’s (WCA) Red Barn, 64 Village Road.

The WCA and At Eagle Pond are co-sponsors of this free program.

In April 2023, just a few days before his death, Pride asked Travis, his long-time friend and colleague, to see the Northern Voices manuscript through to publication. Then Travis shepherded the work from draft to book, which was published earlier this year.

In the book, Pride relates what he learned from the poets he interviewed for articles published in the Concord Monitor and with whom he became friends.

During his illustrated talk, Travis will focus on the works of, and the friendship among three local poets, Donald Hall, Jane Kenyon and Maxine Kumin, all deeply influenced by place.

All three garnered national recognition for their work.

Travis also will discuss three other renowned N.H. poets included in the book.

Annual fiddle festival returns Fiddlers from the Celtic, New England, and FrancoAmerican fiddling traditions will join forces on Saturday, Oct. 5 for the sixth Fall Fiddle Festival, a day packed with workshops and group playing for fiddlers (and violinists who are interested in learning to fiddle!). The Festival, open to teens and adults, will be held at Concord Community Music School, 23 Wall St., Concord.

The day includes workshops on a variety of topics at the novice, intermediate, and advanced levels. In the evening, all four fiddle faculty members, along with their musical collaborators, will present a toe-tapping evening concert of fiddle

music open to the public.

The Festival will feature guest faculty members Hanneke Cassel and Don Roy, alongside two of New Hampshire’s own fiddling favorites, Audrey Budington and Liz Faiella.

They'll be joined for the evening concert by accompanists Dan Faiella, guitar and Cindy Roy, piano.

About the instructors/performers: Fiddling champion Hanneke Cassel blends originality and innovation with the spirit of Scottish traditional fiddle. Fusing musical roots from the Isle of Skye and Cape Breton Island with Americana stylings, Hanneke’s playing has been described by the Boston

Globe as “exuberant and rhythmic, somehow wild and innocent, delivered with captivating melodic clarity and an irresistible playfulness.”

National Heritage Fellowship recipient Don Roy is a virtuosic fiddler whose music is deeply rooted in the Franco-American tradition. He actively fosters community music-making and appreciation of traditional music through his unique fiddle orchestra, "Fiddle-icious", and performs and records using his own violins.

Fiddle festival returns FESTIVAL FROM PAGE 11

formed with Rosanne Cash, Darol Anger, and Bruce Molsky among others. Liz Faiella, chair of the Folk Department at the Music School, brings flair and sensitivity to the traditional Celtic and New England folk music she loves. For fiddlers participating in the daytime workshops, keep an eye out for award-winning New Hampshire-based fiddler and Music School faculty member Jordan TirrellWysocki, who will join the fiddle team in leading group tunes after lunch!

In the evening concert, the fiddlers will share the stage with two masterful accompanists. Cindy Roy, also a National Heritage Fellowship recipient, grew up immersed in the melodies and

rhythms of Franco-American music. Her piano accompaniment is fluid and rhythmic and provides a perfect foil to the virtuosic fiddling of her husband and musical partner, Don Roy. Guitarist Dan Faiella specializes in traditional Celtic music. Trained as an accompanist through years of playing for New England contra dances and alongside Irish fiddlers, he has performed at venues and festivals around the country with numerous traditional music groups.
