through the various stages of grief that followed. The show ends with Communion, a multi-panel piece composed of drawings by both me and my daughter reflecting on the relationship I have with her now, 10 years after her death.”

When looking at Bruun’s work, the images strike with an ethereal fluidity.

“My work is constantly in revision. I’m always using my eraser in charcoal and pastel drawings; I use a lot of white gouache to cover up marks in gouache and watercolor drawings; I use sandpaper to bring the imagery down in my mostlyoil paintings on panels. The finished product has plenty of signs of process and past iterations — patinas from working and reworking.”

This patina adds an ephemeral layer to the work, as if it is in motion.

Words, color, lines, and shape come together in a piece as if one was watching the mind pulse with thought and feeling, trying to process. Peter

Bruun is an artist, curator, and community activist currently based in Maine.

Bruun’s method of bringing studio, curatorial, and advocacy aspects into his practice was honed in Baltimore, MD, his home for many years, and is evident in such projects as Anonymous Requiem (2002), Music, Art & Beautiful Things (2005), Autumn Leaves (2014), and Beyond Beautiful: One Thousand Love Letters (2019).

Bruun founded the New Day Campaign in early 2014 (following the death of his daughter Elisif from an opioid overdose), an initiative dedicated to using arts programming and public engagement to challenge stigma associated with mental illness and substance use, making the world a more healing place.

He has pursued his practice nationally and internationally, serving as a cultural envoy in Palestine, a visiting artist in Amman, Jordan, and a resident artist

at Yellow Barn Music Festival in Putney, Vermont, among other undertakings.

Named Best Curator by multiple Baltimore publications, he is the recipient of numerous grants and other awards for his work.

In addition to the exhibition, there will be a number of community events held at 3S Artspace that are meant to compliment the exhibition and intersect with the conversation around mental health, addiction, grief, loss, and acceptance.

S Artspace is pleased to announce its next exhibition, Each Has Their Grief, running from Aug. 16 to Oct. 13. An opening reception and opportunity to meet the artist will be held Friday, Aug.16, from 5 to 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Five years after the death of his daughter from an accidental overdose, Peter Bruun turned to his studio for solace. Going headlong into his grief, for three years he excavated his pain by making art. With time came catharsis and healing; light began to break through, and sorrow’s blues began to give way to polychromatic bursts of joy.

Each Has Their Grief features dozens of Bruun’s paintings and drawings, figurative abstractions grounded in narrative taking us through his story of loss and love, sorrow and serenity, and landing us at grace.

The exhibition is organized into seven series: Memoir, Bibliography, Big Crying, Lamentation, Joy, Together, and Communion.

As explained by Peter Bruun, “The exhibition itself presents a narrative arc. It starts with a series I call memoir drawings, taking us from the moment I received the phone call letting me know Elisif had died and then continuing

The remaining 50, known as the Warfield Collection, were bequeathed to The Sharon Arts Center in 2008 to be put on permanent display. Eleven years later, in 2019, The Arts Center closed, leaving the Collection in limbo and at risk of scattered dispersal.

Due to the diligence and generous support of Robert’s son, Bob Warfield, this collection was rescued and returned to Jaffrey, its rightful home.

‘Beethoven, Dvorak, Ginastera’ in Peterborough

lectric Earth Concerts presents ”Beethoven, Dvorak, Ginastera” on Thursday, Aug. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Peterborough Town House in Peterborough.

Musicians from the Sebago-Long Lake festival return for a second collaboration. Emilie-Anne Gendron, violin, Todd Phillips, violin, Matthew Sinno, viola; Mihai Marica, cello; Mihae Lee, piano; and EEC Artistic Director Laura Gilbert, flute.

The program: Alberto Ginastera: Impresiones de la Puna for flute and strings, Ludwig van Beethoven: String Trio in G, Op. 9, No. 1, and Antonín Dvorak: Piano Quartet in E-Flat, Op. 87.

Alberto Ginastera was an Argentine composer of classical music. He is considered to be one of the most important 20th-century classical composers of

the Americas. Ginastera grouped his music into three periods: “Objective Nationalism” (1934–1948), “Subjective Nationalism” (1948–1958), and “Neo-Expressionism” (1958–1983).

Among other distinguishing features, these periods vary in their use of traditional Argentine musical elements. His Objective Nationalistic works often integrate Argentine folk themes in a straightforward fashion, while works in the later periods incorporate traditional elements in increasingly abstracted forms.

Many of Ginastera’s works were inspired by the Gauchesco tradition. This tradition holds that the gaucho,or landless native horseman of the plains, is a symbol of Argentina.

Antonín Dvorak was a Czech composer. He fre-

quently employed rhythms and other aspects of the folk music of Moravia and his native Bohemia, following the Romantic-era nationalist example of his predecessor Bedrich Smetana. Dvorak’s style has been described as “the fullest recreation of a national idiom with that of the symphonic tradition, absorbing folk influences and finding effective ways of using them,” and Dvorak has been described as “arguably the most versatile... composer of his time.”

Dvorak’s Piano Quartet in E flat major is a prime example of the composer’s absolute maturity and one of the most conclusive testimonies of his exceptional ability to introduce innovation and originality into the classical form.

Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer

and pianist. He is one of the most revered figures in the history of Western music; his works rank among the most performed of the classical music repertoire and span the transition from the Classical period to the Romantic era in classical music.

Although this Opus (9) does not contain the most played works by Beethoven it was a significant mile-

stone in his development as a composer. At the time of publication, the 28-year-old Beethoven regarded the trios as his best compositions.

Print exhibition comes to Portsmouth

S Artspace is pleased to announce its inaugural Print Expo and Exhibition centered around the theme of “In This Moment.” This exhibition will run through

August 25. It will feature over fifty printmaking artists from across the Northeast. Many pieces in the exhibition will be on sale.

Visitors will have the op-

portunity to meet artist vendors, discuss their craft, and purchase prints.

During a member’s only hour on Saturday, August 10 of the expo, members will have the opportunity for a “first look” at the art for purchase, allowing them to snag their favorite works.

Artists will display works in different mediums ranging from linocuts, monoprints, woodcuts, lithographs, screenprinting, etching, and more.

This Expo and Exhibition will permeate 3S’s halls, from the Main Gallery, the Lobby Gallery, and the Performance Space to the Shop at 3S. The walls and shelves will be stocked with art from printmakers across the Northeast.

For this event’s theme, artists were asked to submit works responding to the prompt, “In This Moment.” We wanted to know — What’s on their minds?

What are they loving? Celebrating? Protesting? Contemplating? Grieving?

“What’s so exciting about printmaking is that it is a genre with so many subgenres. It’s a medium that requires an incredible amount of creativity and is often matched with a more accessible price point.

We’re thrilled to spotlight printmaking as a way for folks to engage with printmaking as a medium and support contemporary and emerging artists,” said Beth Falconer, the Executive Director of 3S Artspace, about the event.

Amongst the art and opportunities for visitors to engage with the artists, Carand Burnet will be performing live music on Sunday, the bar will be open, and there will be assorted refreshments. This celebration of the printmaking craft will return to Portsmouth in years to come.

“We plan to make this a signature 3S event and continue the Print Exhibition and Expo each year, hoping that it becomes a mainstay of what Portsmouth offers its residents and tourists,” said Beth Falconer.

Annual ‘Pitch In Days’ The Friends of the Concord City Auditorium will host the 34th annual “Pitch In” on Aug. 19, 20 and 21 at Concord City Auditorium from 9 a.m. to noon and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

This is a barn-raising, community-building way to get the Audi shining for the 2024-2025 season.
