Concord Community Music School presents: Hildaland On Thursday, May 2, at 12:10 p.m., Orkney (Scotland) born fiddler Louise Bichan and Indiana (USA) mandolinist Ethan Setiawan present a collaboration and meeting of their musical worlds.

A path steeped in the fiddle traditions of their respective sides of the Atlantic, the journey taken wends through Scottish, oldtime, and Swedish-inspired music intertwined with contemporary compositions. Bichan’s fiddle is a melodic foil to Setiawan’s counterpoint and harmonic depth, and the two weave in and out seamlessly.

This event is part of our 40th Anniversary Year celebration and will be held in our historic Recital Hall. It is free of charge and open to the public, thanks to the generosity of the Walker Fund. Donations are appreciated.

(2024, 388 pages, Genre: Historical Fiction/Fantasy) Manchuria 1908 Snow is a mysterious creature who can turn from a fox into a beautiful young woman, and she is hunting for the man who caused her daughter’s death. She vows to kill him.

She is willing to travel and endure many hardships to see him dead. Snow finds her way to a town where this man, a Manchurian photographer, is said to be. Bao is a man has become a private detective in his older years. Bao can tell when people are lying, and is hired to find out why a young courtesan froze to death in a doorway with a smile on her face. She was last seen with a goodlooking, well-dressed young man.

Someone mentioned that foxes have been seen in the area. Bao has always been interested in foxes; he used to visit a fox god’s shrine with his nanny when he was young.

And a family who owns a renowned Chinese medicine shop is trying desperately to stop a curse. Their oldest sons always die before their 24th birthdays. Snow becomes a servant to the grandmother in the house and things begin to change. Snow is joined by two other foxes in human form, attractive young men. Foxes she has known before. But she is unsure of their motives.

These three storylines are woven together is this intriguing mix of historical fiction, fantasy and mystery.

There are unforgettable characters in this tale of betrayal, heartbreak, legends, magic and love. It’s a story that stays with you. I hope to read about Snow, Kuro, Shiro and Bao again one day.

This year’s David Surette Mandolin Festival on will take place on May 3 – 5.

As always, we have a stellar line-up of teacher/performers we are so excited to bring you: Carlo Aonzo, Dan Bui, Keith Murphy and Joe K. Walsh.

All four of these folks are versed in tradition and can also bring tradition into new places. Among them, they cover many musical styles.

The kick-off concert will take place at The Dance Hall in Kittery Maine on Friday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m., with sets by each of the teachers. Saturday night’s concert at the Music School’s lovely Recital Hall is included with your workshop registration, and tickets are also available to the public.

‘into the ether’

Pillar Gallery announces fourth exhibition PILLAR Gallery + Projects is a new exhibition space in Concord. Their fourth exhibition, Into The Ether, will be on view until June 7.

Into the Ether, focuses on the nebulous and ephemeral — in hazy, high-key abstraction, airy pastels and immersive installation.

Memory and myth are explored, even if in fleeting moments. The group exhibition includes works by Sung Won Yun, Kevin Xiques, Lydia Kinney and Samantha

Eckert.

Featured are large-scale fluorescent pink installations by Samantha Eckert.

Floating, cloud-like sculptural forms are made from knitted and hand-dyed yarn, as well as hanging sand-dollars created from Italian fiber clay, rhinestones and gouache. Eckert is a VTbased conceptual artist. Her works are deeply influenced by her Italian heritage and handcrafted objects made by her mother and grand-

mother. Through their legacy, she explores memory myth, ancestry, loss, and longing, weaving between personal and political themes.

Works exhibited by Sung Won Yun, both drawings on mylar and large-scale abstract paintings, are accumulations of countless layers of precise brushstrokes that build into airy and atmospheric abstractions. Sung Won Yun was born in Seoul, Korea and works in NYC. She is working on representing fundamental questions about homogenization of cultural, ecological, or geological process in the congeries of time.

Lydia Kinney is a MAbased painter working in structured and layered abstraction embracing aspects of “self, body, space, and form.” Kinney’s paintings use a range of layered paint viscosities to create color fields and atmospherics interrupted by structural shapes.

Rock’N Race returns May 8 Run (or walk) to this year’s annual Rock’N Race on Wednesday, May 8. Be sure to dress up like your favorite superhero on race day!

Participants with a variety of abilities will run/walk a 5K or walk a shorter 1-mile loop through downtown Concord while raising funds for Concord Hospital Payson Center for Cancer Care. The Starting Bell Rings at 6 p.m.

honor the site of the first religious service in central New Hampshire (East Side Drive/Sugar Ball Road).

That event stirred interest in the community.

In 1900, the people of the Plains and First Congregational Church agreed that Immanuel Chapel would be established as a non-denominational mission of First Church. The building was erected on Grover Street.

Many items were donated.

One of particular interest is the bell in the tower which continues to be rung every Sunday, a gift from Boston and Maine Railroad. The chapel was dedicated December 9, 1900 with over 200 people in attendance.

(ICC has since become independent of First Church).

When Havenwood Heritage Heights (the retirement community) opened, many of the residents joined our church and were active wherever needed. We volunteered many hours at the Havenwood facility over the years. A scholarship is still given in memory of our member who established their thrift shop. We were instrumental in setting up the first food pantry in Concord and continue to be active with the Friendly Kitchen.

May 2, 2002: The same day retired Roman Catholic priest Paul Shanley is arrested in San Diego on three counts of raping a child, Bishop John McCormack acknowledges in a television interview that he mishandled cases of clergy sexual abuse while in Massachusetts and had even ignored a warning about Shanley.

May 2, 1939: The news in New York and around the world of baseball is that Lou Gehrig, after playing 2,130 consecutive games for the Yankees, has sat one out.

Without Gehrig, the Yankees clobber Detroit 22-2.

May 6, 1990: Renowned portrait photographer Lotte Jacobi dies in Concord. A native of Germany who lived in Deering for 30 years, Jacobi photographed Albert Einstein, Thomas Mann, Robert Frost, Marc Chagall, Eleanor Roosevelt and many other giants of the 20th century.

May 7, 2002: In a closely watched case about sexual harassment laws, and about the powers of the agency charged with enforcing them, the New Hampshire Supreme Court rules that prison officials sufficiently protected a corrections officer who was groped by a colleague, even though they did not fire the man who admitted he grabbed her

breasts.

May 7, 1973: Maxine Kumin of Warner wins the Pulitzer Prize for poetry for Up Country. “I’m just absolutely knocked out,” she says. “I can’t believe it.”

Kumin says the book “took the pulse of the times a little bit. People are turning away from urban things.”

May 7, 1861: The First New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry Regiment, gathered in Concord, completes its organization under Col. Mason Tappan of Bradford.

May 7, 1732: John Pittman is born. He will be an early settler of Barnstead and live to the age of 101. Around his 100th birthday, a town history reports, “he procured a set of teeth, white, strong and fashionable, which was in truth a wonder in the neighborhood, and he began to look young again.”
