Medieval Merriment is coming to town The Franklin Opera House will host a special Spring Gala event on Saturday, April 27 at 5:30 p.m. featuring a sit-down meal, fundraising raffle, and music by The Scott Spradling Band. This event is being celebrated with a Medieval Feast theme (costumes optional). Some of their friends from the neighboring Kingdom of Footlight (Franklin Footlight Theatre Co.) will be joining the fun in the Great Elks Hall (the Franklin Elks Lodge) for a rousing good time.

A ticket to the Spring Gala event includes salad, sides, rolls, a main course (roast turkey or stuffed shells), dessert and a complimentary ale, wine or soda from the bar. Glutenfree gravy and rolls are

available upon request at purchase. Each Lord or Lady will receive their drink medallion upon check-in and one complimentary raffle ticket!

After dinner, Scott Spradling brings his tremendous “modern big band” (with lots of horns!) playing the mega hits heard on the radio over the years – from the 50s to the 90s.

Enjoy tunes from Chicago, Billy Joel, Sinatra, Michael Bublé, Huey, and more! Attendees can sit back and enjoy the show, or feel free to get up and dance!

All proceeds from this event will directly contribute to funding the renovation and reopening of Franklin Opera House.

A movement is underway in Franklin to preserve the crown jewel of

the City. Every member of the community can contribute to this effort in their own way, since progress and growth come from the collective effort of forward-thinking people.

The Franklin Opera House building was originally designed to be a multipurpose building for the community. For nearly seventy-five years, schools, churches, and local groups such as Franklin Hook & Ladder Co., V.F.W., the Elks, The American Red Cross, and others graced the stage and main hall with plays, entertainment, dancing, and conventions of all sorts.

After napping since the 1960s, a loyal army of volunteer knights banded together to form a Restora-

tion Committee. Because of their dedication and determination Franklin’s “sleeping beauty” awakened from her slumber.

Franklin Opera House has been ringing with the sounds of laughter, music and applause since 2001.

Efforts continue to build on their legacy and make

the Opera House even better.

English choir Gregorian comes to Concord

Social media star to Grand Marshal Walk For Sight Sam Seavey hosts ‘The Blind Life’ on YouTube Social Media Star Sam Seavey, host of The Blind Life on YouTube, will Grand Marshal the Walk For Sight on Saturday, May 18th in downtown Concord. This year marks the 21st anniversary of Future In Sight’s signature fundraising event. Future In Sight is a nonprofit organization that provides services to children, adults and elderly in NH who are blind and visually impaired as a result of trauma, disease, and the natural progression of age. Many of the individuals that Future In

Sight serves are considered low-income as a result of their vision disability and/or aging out of the workforce. Funds raised during the Walk For Sight enable Future In Sight to continue offering services regardless of one’s ability to pay.

The 21st Annual Walk For Sight will consist of a 1mile loop through downtown Concord, starting and ending on the Capitol lawn.

Students will weave the base by twining, which results in a solid bottom. Students will then upset the stakes. The sides are woven using start/stop rows. Once the sides are complete students will “down stake,” measure and scarf their rim, and then lash the rim to the basket.

“Water is the essence of our planet and our lives. It runs through all our days, whether in the form of tears, ice, snow, steam, fog, clouds, and rain,” says Lugg.

“Water can carry us away or let us float. It can carve its own course or show us the pattern of the wind.”

Each artist invites viewers to explore the subject of water in his or her own way.

Their work includes abstract and realistic paintings and artistic photographic compositions, in both vibrant colors and subtle tones.

John Hoglund, of Bow, trained and worked as an engineer and shifted his focus to photography after taking courses at what is now the New Hampshire Institute of Art and Design.

He is fascinated by the lines of dams, mill buildings, and other structures, as well as the delicate lines and shapes of nature.

Ann Saunderson, a former art teacher, now paints fulltime in her Loudon studio.

She works with a variety of mediums to create expressive, textural paintings that

Sher Kamman is drawn to the magic created as light touches landscape and ordinary objects. As a photographer and psychologist, she aims to bring in the light to

expose the hidden beauty in both people and landscapes.

William Florian is no stranger to folk music. As a former member of the famous 60s group The New Christy Minstrels, he now travels the United States sharing messages of peace through songs.

His show – “Those Were the Days” – shares a journey through America’s greatest folk and pop songs of the ‘60s, including songs Florian performed with The New Christy Minstrels, along with the music of Peter, Paul & Mary, Pete Seeger, John Denver and more.

What are your hobbies and passions – outside of music?

“Driving my motorhome around the country for performances, visiting state and national parks, hiking, being in nature and at the beach!”

Your mission is to travel the globe, spreading goodwill and messages of peace through music. How does your music and performances help

accomplish this goal?

“During a show, audience members leave all their thoughts and chatter behind and we are all in the moment together raising the energy! This brings lots of love and peace to everyone.

There’s a song I wrote about 18 years ago called ‘I’m Declaring Peace.’ People around the world are singing that song. I proclaim myself to be the ‘American Musical Ambassador of Peace.’ I have sung in foreign countries and got people singing my song. I tell them that there actually are hundreds of millions of Americans that want peace

A state Committee of Public Safety is established to report any union or other radical activity to federal agents based in Concord.

April 12, 1827: On Fast Day, Rev. Nathaniel Bouton, 27, delivers the first temperance sermon in Concord.

Bouton’s words at the Old North Church ignite local participation in a social

movement that will last more than a century. Bouton asserts in his sermon that he has investigated and found that “the use of ardent spirits in Concord” is “universal.” He claims that the 1,400 men in Concord consumed nearly 14,000 gallons of liquor in 1825. The Concord Temperance Society will be formed three years later. By 1843, nearly half of the city’s adult residents will have signed a prohibition pledge.

April 12, 1934: Two years after scientists begin daily weather observations on Mount Washington, observers record the greatest wind speed ever measured on earth: 231 mph.

April 13, 2003: A fire breaks out in an apartment building off East Side Drive in Concord, attracting the attention of Kyle Bissonnette, 12, Matthew Peters, 12, and Nate Bell, 10. Seeing flames shooting from a downstairs window in the Regency Estates apartment building, the three pull their bikes over and flag down a passer-by, who calls the police. Kyle and Matthew head into the building and start knocking on doors, making sure everyone is out and rousing residents who don’t hear the smoke alarms. Nate waits outside to make sure his friends come out okay.

One apartment is destroyed in the blaze. Nobody is injured.

April 13, 2001: The state Supreme Court rejects an appeal brought by convicted murderer James Dale. He will continue to serve a 60year prison sentence for the rape and murder of a 6-yearold Hopkinton girl.

April 13, 1945: Responding to the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt the previous night in Warm Springs, Ga., John G. Winant of Concord, the U.S. Ambassador to England, says: “The greatest American of our age is dead.”

April 14, 1865: Edwin Bedee of Meredith, a captain in the 12th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry Regiment, goes to Ford’s Theater. He can see President Lincoln from his seat. After John Wilkes Booth jumps to the stage and flees, Bedee climbs over several rows and enters Lincoln’s box. He holds the president’s head while a surgeon searches for Lincoln’s wound. Bedee suddenly feels the president’s blood running into his hand.

“Here is the wound, doctor,” he says.

April 14, 1865: At 5 p.m., Congressman Edward H. Rollins, a Concord Republican, stops by the White House to seek a pass for a constituent to visit his wounded son in an army hospital. President Lincoln comes downstairs to oblige Rollins, writing a note to the secretary or war. It is the last official business Lincoln will conduct before going to dinner and the theater - and possibly the last time he will sign his name. After Lincoln is assassinated at Ford’s Theatre, Rollins keeps the dated, signed note.

April 14, 1945: In response to Gov. Charles Dale’s call for a day of mourning for President Roosevelt, the Monitor does not publish and all businesses close.

April 14, 1993: The Concord Fire Department, generally in the business of extinguishing fires, starts one: Environmentalists hope a controlled burn on 10 acres of grass at the Concord Airport will improve conditions for the endangered

Friends rush across to the Phenix Hotel to awaken Edward E. Sturtevant, a popular police officer and former printer. Sturtevant rushes to the State House and, fulfilling his fondest wish, becomes New Hampshire’s first Civil War volunteer.

April 15, 1928: Augusta Pillsbury of Manchester makes history, becoming the first legislator in the nation to have a baby while in office.

April 15, 1865: At 2 a.m., the telegraph at the Eagle Hotel brings news that President Lincoln has been shot.

At 7:22 a.m., Lincoln dies in Washington. Word spreads quickly in Concord, and crowds gather in the streets.

At 9 p.m. many drift to former president Franklin Pierce’s mansard-roofed home on Main Street near Thorndike Street. A lantern illuminating his face, Pierce expresses his “profound sorrow and regret,” telling the crowd: “My best wishes to you all and for what we ought to hold most dear our country - our whole country.”

April 16, 1965: After a major organizing and fundraising effort by, among

others, Dudley Orr, Russell Martin, Malcolm McLane and figure-skating Police Chief Walter Carlson, construction begins on the ice hockey rink that will become the Everett Arena.

April 16, 1967: The governor and Executive Council approve the state’s acquisition of 224.5 acres of marshland off Hoit Road in East Concord for a fish and wildlife preserve.

April 17, 2003: Attorneys called their last witness against the Rev. George Robichaud, who is on trial in Belknap County Superior Court for two sexual assault charge, rape and attempted rape. Robichaud is the first priest to be tried on sexual assault charges since the clergy abuse scandal broke in New Hampshire last year.
