Newbury Public Library & The John Hay Literary Society present a poetry reading with Ewa Cruschiel on Monday, April 8 at 7 p.m. at The Newbury Vets Hall.

Ewa has four books of poems in English: Yours, Purple Gallinule (Omnidawn 2022), Of Annunciations (Omnidawn 2017), Contraband of Hoopoe (Omnidawn 2014), Strata (Emergency Press 2009, reprinted by Omnidawn, April 2018), as well as three books in Polish: ToboŒek (2016) SopiŒki (2009), and Furkot (2003).

Her book Contraband of Hoopoe was translated into Italian by Anna Aresi and came out in Italy with Edizioni Ensemble in May 2019.

Her poems have been included in curricula at institutions such as Harvard University, University of Wisconsin, and Salem State University. She is a Professor of Creative and Pro-

This is the first time that New Hampshire has been represented at National Water Dances, which began 2011 as a catalyst to encourage ongoing engagement between dancers and the environment.

“I am awed by the power of water to literally move mountains as it did when the glaciers receded and created the Lakes Region,” says

teaching artist and event organizer Gaynelle Gosselin.

“The movement of water as the snow melts and the rain falls is a source of endless fascination to me. I find myself wondering what the water carries as it rushes downstream.”

Gosselin is concerned about how our actions affect the health of the lakes so many people have come to enjoy. “You can be a tourist and enjoy a place, but if you truly love a place, you take care of it. Water is life. My hope is that this event will encourage members of our community to be good stewards of our brooks, ponds, and lakes and rivers.”

Twiggs Gallery reopens for the season Twiggs Gallery in Boscawen reopens for the season on Saturday, April 6.

“Pushing Our Boundaries,” Twiggs Gallery’s first exhibit for the 2024 season opens on April 6. The spring exhibition showcases the collaborative talent of four League of NH Craftsmen artists.

Woodworker Steven Hayden, textile artist Cheryl Miller, ceramist Lori Rollason, and mixed media artist and calligrapher Adele Sanborn collaborate as the 9th State Artisans.

Each artist has selected a quote or poem and formulated a challenge to the group. “Pushing Our Boundaries” showcases the result of this creative collaboration.

The exhibit opens with an artists’ reception on Saturday, April 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Twiggs Gallery (254 King Street in Boscawen) and runs through May 19.

“What’s fascinating about this exhibit is how these four artists, working in completely different media, push each other creatively. They are exploring new things and working outside their comfort zone to create new work.

They really are pushing themselves beyond their boundaries!” shared gallery director Laura Morrison.

Deck’s suicide attempt brings everyone together to save Deck, but this brings to light old conflicts and ongoing hostilities both in the family and with other town residents.

The book switches back and forth from “then” to “now”, slowly building a picture of what happened “then” and what is happening “now”. July comes to realize there is more to the story than she originally thought nine years ago.

While I thought this book was a little slow at times, I did feel compelled to go back and finish it after I switched to other books to find out what happened and have the on-going questions resolved!

lice to seize poultry being trucked south on New Hampshire highways.

April 6, 1943: Awakened by a loud noise on a cold and windy night, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Giles, who live in an apartment adjacent to their store in Canterbury Center, discover the worst fire in the town’s history. “We first knew something was wrong when a piano crashed through the second floor of Union Hall into our store,” they say. The fire destroys the Union Hall, the 118year-old Congregational Church, Ida Chase’s farm

and another farm a quarter mile away.

April 7, 2000: Robert Blair, who murdered his wife and her young son in a Concord motel in 1996, has told the police he also killed two people in Rutland, Vt., in 1983, the Rutland Herald reports. Detectives there, however, will find no evidence of the killings in the location Blair described.

We do not have a street where all or most Negroes live.” He suggests that Concord invite to town “some of the black people who have lost all hope while living in the segregated squalor of urban centers.”

April 7, 1830: A committee is formed in Concord to pursue the idea of an eastwest railroad line through New Hampshire and Vermont. The first train will not reach the city for 12 years, and it will come north from Boston.

new $1.2 million state liquor store on Storrs Street in Concord. “The state store is expected to become the first of its sort in the nation.

formal sampling of public opinion finds residents angry with the state Supreme Court but in no mood for an ordeal like the impeachment trial of President Clinton.
