The award was given in honor of the late Dr. Samuel Somers — a gastroenterologist and beloved colleague — who unexpectedly passed away in February 2023.

Dr. Thomson earned this prestigious honor for his unwavering commitment to providing expert, compassionate care to his patients, one of many outstanding qualities exhibited by Dr. Samuel Somers when caring for his patients.

“This is an exceptional honor for Dr. Thomson,” said Dr. Christopher Allen, immediate past medical staff president at Concord Hospital. “It gives me great

pleasure to recognize him with this award to remember Dr. Samuel Somers for his dedication to caring for patients during a career spanning over two decades. He was a cherished colleague who provided comfort to so many with his gentle nature.”

Diane Hotten-Somers, Dr. Samuel Somers’ wife, attended the event and shared are few comments about the relationship her late husband had with Dr. Thomson. “They were not just practice partners, they also had a simpatico dedication to and craft of practicing gastroenterology medicine. Much of Sam’s craft came from working with Dr. Thomson on how to provide the highest, most compassionate level of patient care.”

Dr. Thomson joined Concord Hospital Medical

Group in 2000. He is a graduate of Rush Medical College of Rush University based in Chicago, Ill. He completed his residency and fellowship at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. He is board-certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Gallery features red chalk drawings of Civon The upcoming exhibition at Two Villages Art Society (TVAS) in Hopkinton, N.H., features the work of Hollywood, CA, artist Dario CiVon. “A Passion for Red Chalk,” opened Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Two Villages Art Society’s gallery at 846 Main Street in the village of Contoocook.

An opening reception was held March 9 from 12 to 2 p.m. and the artist will present a gallery talk, “Red Chalk Drawing: The Renaissance and Beyond,” at 7 p.m. on March 14. Both events are free and open to the public.

CiVon’s work is inspired

by the Italian Renaissance painters’ use of “Venetian red,” in particular the drawings of Michelangelo and Leonardo DaVinci. The 30year-old artist works in the animation and digital design industry, but loves the flexibility and subtle tonal variation possible using red chalk.

“Even though I use many digital tools professionally, there’s just nothing like the feel of real chalk on real paper,” he says. “It’s absolutely seductive to me and activates my imagination like nothing else. In all of art, there is nothing quite like the passion and the life

that can be conveyed through the skillful use of red chalk.”

Raised in a TV writing family in L.A., CiVon became an avid sculptor of monsters in high school and interned with Academy Award-winning special effects creator Rick Baker. He fell in love with classical art and sculpture while studying entertainment art at the ArtCenter College of Art and Design in Pasadena.

That passion led him to study with world-class drawing instructors including Glenn Vilppu, Will Weston, Kirk Shinmoto, Ramon Hurtado, and Steve Huston.

In 2023, CiVon left his hometown of Hollywood to spend the year helping his brother renovate a house in Hopkinton. “Two Villages Art Society happened to be right down the street. I became a member, attended a monthly drawing night, and the concept for a solo show was born!” he says.

“The point of the show is to demonstrate the won-

derful purity and energy of the old Renaissance techniques (with modern, fresh subject matter, such as my pugs Kuki and Guapo),” CiVon says. He hopes that his large chalk drawings and loose sketches “blast off the wall.”

“It’s very exciting for me to exhibit these drawings, because though I’m an entertainment illustrator, in this exhibit I’m sharing my private drawing practice, which is near and dear to my heart.”

Two Villages Art Society’s gallery is open to the public

free of charge Thursday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. The exhibit closes April 6.

Two Villages Art Society is a non-profit, memberdriven art association with a gallery located at 846 Main Street in Hopkinton’s Contoocook Village. It was voted Best of NH (art galleries) by New Hampshire Magazine in 2022. Membership is open to all and admission to exhibits is free.

anborn Mills Farm in Loudon, NH will host its first Sap Gathering Contest in collaboration with Granite State Draft Horse & Pony Association on March 23. The event will demonstrate the historical practice of collecting sap with draft horses, and is free to the public.

“It’s to carry on the tradition,” said farm manager Ray Ramsay. “That goes along with our mission and vision statement, that’s really what Sanborn Mills is about, keeping the old traditions alive.”

Teams of two helpers and their horses will compete in a timed race to collect water (in place of sap, to prevent waste and ease set-up) and avoid obstacles.

PILLAR Gallery + Projects is a new exhibition space in Concord, NH. Their third exhibition, Excavations, is on view through March 22.

PILLAR Gallery + Projects third exhibition, Excavations, presents themes of geological time and forms, slower paced growth and erosion, and our relation to our surroundings. Artists Include Jonathan Mess, Julie Hamel, Shino Takeda, Debra Claffey, Cody Tamaian, Ann Kinne, Victoria Elbroch and Al Jaeger.

Media features ceramics installation and vessels, with experimental photographic work, mixed media encaustic, and printmaking. The works focus on concepts of earth and soil, such as wood fired ceramics, long-exposure observations of nature, etchings of root systems, and sculpture that replicates geological processes and strata.

Jonathan Mess works experimentally with reclaimed ceramics. Layering different types of found clay and playing with a variety of materials, the sculptures create geological-

like strata, fissures and valleys. Julie Hamel is a multidisciplinary maker working with photographic media that speaks of loss and memory. Working with long exposure and pin-hole cameras left in wooded areas, she uses what’s found in nature to highlight the distance in human interactions, she marks the importance of connections and the emotional effects of separation.

Shino Takeda hand builds and works with several different clay bodies. Growing up in Kyushu Island in southern Japan and currently residing in Brooklyn, NY she woodfires upstate and does a second silver firing in Nichigetsugama, Japan. She continually searches for “perfect imperfections” in her works, evoking ideas of wabi-sabi. Her inspirations stem from the natural world and a sense of her interior self. Cody Tamaian’s wood-fired ceramic vessels, with their eroded and craggy surfaces, explore a collaboration with uncertainty, and the power of ambiguity. To accomplish this he pushes the limits of both himself and the materials he in-

teracts with. Included work is the result of a five-day wood firing. Al Jaeger is inspired by the land that he has conserved, lived and worked on for the past half-century.

In his wood-fired ceramic works, he harvests and incorporates found materials from the surrounding fields and forests including sand, gravel, feldspar, and coffee grounds.

Debra Claffey focuses on the plant world and the assaults on the soil, biodiversity of plant species, and the protection of native flora in her art. Working in encaustic and mixed media, the texture and surfaces of the works included seem like fossilized plants trapped in stone. Ann Kinne works with wood, metal and found objects.

Their jewelry work preserves and brings out the best qualities of simple unassuming objects, including excavated tools. Victoria Elbroch creates drawings, etching and paintings of ancient trees, sometimes as large, isolated portraits and sometimes buried in the enduring land-

scape. The portraits are detailed renderings celebrating all the gnarly protrusions, textures, and anomalies of bark and root systems.

Kuegler spent the majority of her youth in the isolated and primeval rainforest of West Papua, Indonesia, living alongside the Fayu, an indigenous tribe that had previously had almost no contact with the outside world. She recounts her experiences learning to not just survive, but thrive in the vast tropical wilderness, acquiring the Fayu language and becoming accustomed to their way of life.

Each short chapter offers a glimpse into this fascinating world; Kuegler’s words submerged me into a culture so very different from my own, and yet one that often shows

book of the week harmony, and both groups of people benefited from each other in innumerous ways. While traditionally a society entrenched in civil war between their four clans, the Fayu discovered more peaceful approaches to settling disputes from the Kueglers. In turn, the Kueglers were taught how to respect the natural world, and became completely accepted into this tight-knit community.

It was so interesting to read about how the Kueglers adapted to living in the

jungle; the author tells of eating sago palm (a staple in the Fayu diet), crocodile, bat (including the wings!), snake meat, and all manner of insects, seeds, and tropical fruits. She also retells stories of close calls with the danger nature can bring.

She had endless adventures traipsing through the brush with the Fayu children, and made many friendships that have had a sustained impact on her life. Included with all these stories are pictures of several members of the tribe, animals, their house

in the jungle, and aspects of Fayu culture.

It was deeply heartbreaking to read about Sabine’s separation from the Fayu when she went to a boarding school in Switzerland; she left West Papua after the devastating and tragic death of her friend Ohri. As was to be expected, Sabine faced great challenges trying to integrate into Western society after living in the rainforest for over 10 years. She writes of her struggle in finding her identity as both a European

woman and the child of the jungle, which developed into an extremely grueling existential crisis for her. While I have never had nearly the experiences of Sabine Kuegler, I felt such heartache for her as she explained what it felt like to be torn between the two worlds. Despite these trials, Kuegler was incredibly lucky to have lived her childhood in the rainforest; the jungle and its inhabitants became a true part of her.

Reading this book sparked an interest for me to read

more about these indigenous cultures and how their existence is sometimes protected, but often threatened, by the modern world. I find it incredibly enriching to have an ongoing reminder through books like Kuegler’s that there are other worlds, other valuable lessons to learn, and other ways of life happening in the far-off corners of our planet.

Every time I perform. It’s ebbed and flowed over the years. I’ve had full blown panic attacks mid-song which makes for an interesting performance. Haha.

What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Write. Play. Collaborate.

Don’t sweat the small stuff.

Work together. Be weary of those with their own agendas. Help create a community. Support that com-

munity. Help elevate that community. Write. Play.

Support original musicians, artists, performers, and creatives. Put yourself out there no matter how scary it seems.

How do you stay inspired and motivated to create new music? Inspiration comes in fits and stops. Ride the wave when it’s there and chase it when it’s not.

What first got you into music/art/performance?

There was always music in my house as a child. On weekends, there were always the sounds of Neil Young, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Aerosmith, Elton John, Jimi Hendrix, etc. blasting out of my father’s Bose speakers. In addition to that, my grandmother, grandfather, and greatgrandfather were all musicians.

How would you describe the music/art/performance that you typically create? I write songs that are typically in the “singer/songwriter” realm, but when I play with a full band, the songs have a bit more of a jammier vibe.

What is your favorite song to perform? That’s a tough question! There are songs I enjoy performing for a variety of reasons. One of my favorite covers to play live is “Duncan” by Paul Simon and one of my favorite originals to play live is “By the By.” Which famous musician do you admire the most?

There are so many that have been inspirational in one way or another, either by their lyrics, by their playing, or by their lives. It’s hard to narrow it down to one, but I will say that I admire my fellow local musicians the most. All of them out there playing their hearts out in everything from dark dive bars to big stages, that’s a love of the craft and that, to me, is inspirational.

What would you be doing right now if it wasn’t for your music career? I’m a teacher so I try to balance that with family and music.

Do you collaborate with others? What is that process like? I do. It’s always an inspiring process that opens my perspective and my mind to other ways of thinking about song struc-

March 15, 2002: Nearly 50 years after the concept of a Northwest Bypass emerged, the city of Concord has received a wetlands permit needed to build a portion of the road, the Monitor reports.

March 15, 2000: A 22year-old single mother of twins from Franklin is one of the contestants on the new CBS television series Survivor, the Monitor reports. When the show airs this summer, Jenna Lewis will become a household name and a cause celebre throughout her home state.

March 15, 1914: The Right Rev. William Woodruff Niles dies in Concord at the age of 81. He had served as New Hampshire’s Episcopal archbishop for more than 40 years.

March 15, 1878: After two trials, Joseph Lapage is executed for the ghastly murder of Josie Langmaid.

Miss Langmaid, a student at Pembroke Academy, was dragged into the woods, raped and decapitated the morning of Oct. 14, 1875. A prison historian remarks: “The evidence against him at the best was scant, but his guilt was black as night.” In his last hours, Lapage reportedly says: “Me kill girl.”

March 18, 1949: Concord native Edward H. Brooks wins promotion to lieutenant general in the U.S. Army. From a second lieutenant of cavalry during World War I through his post-World War II service in the Caribbean, Brooks has had a distinguished military career. He won the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism in World War I and the Silver Star, Bronze Star and French Croix de Guerre, among other decorations, during World War II. March 19, 2003: Gary Daniels, a former state legislator from Milford who was an outspoken opponent of gay rights, withdraws his nomination to the state Human Rights Commission.

Since his nomination has appeared doomed for the last few weeks, Gov. Craig Benson has two new nominees at the ready: Republican state Rep. Rogers Johnson of Stratham and Gayle Troye, a human resources manager from Dunbarton.

March 19, 2002: In Concord after less than three hours of deliberation, jurors decide that Dwayne Thompson murdered his longtime roommate Robert Provencher, the man known

by Main Street regulars as “Cigar Bob” for his ever-present smokes of choice.

March 19, 1967: The calendar says spring is about to start, but few believe it. The low temperature in Concord falls to 16 below zero, tying the record for the coldest March day in the 20th cen-

tury. This follows a reading of 13 below the day before and 10 below the day before that.

March 19, 1998: Gov. Jeanne Shaheen proposes putting about 2,500 video gambling terminals at the state’s four racetracks as part of her school funding plan. Anti-gambling leaders are quick to criticize the governor’s suggestion. “It targets the politically weak for tax increases, and it feeds children’s food money into gambling machines,” says state Sen. Jim Rubens, a Republican who will run against Shaheen in the fall.

March 20, 2003: With extra agents on the ground and extra helicopters in the air, security has been tightened at the border between Canada and upstate New York, Vermont and New Hampshire, the Monitor reports. “I am very satisfied we have made great gains in border security since 9-11,” said Mark Henry, the acting agent in charge for the Border Patrol’s Swanton Sector, which runs from Massena, N.Y., to the MaineNew Hampshire line.

March 20, 2002: An apartment fire on Maplewood Lane in Penacook leaves dozens of residents homeless. Nobody is hurt.

March 20, 2001: With back-to-back winter storms having drained snow removal budgets around the state, Gov. Jeanne Shaheen asks President Bush to declare a federal snow emergency for New Hampshire.

The cost of cleaning up from the most recent storm was estimated at $1.5 million.

March 20, 1777: Barnstead town meeting voters

agree to pay 5 shillings per day for “labor on the highway.” They also vote “not to raise any money for schools.”

March 20, 1779: From Exeter, the provincial capital, Dr. Josiah Bartlett writes to his fellow congressman and fellow signer of the Declaration of Independence, William Whipple, in hopes that Whipple will procure from Spain hard currency to pay the army. New Hampshire’s soldiers have been paid in paper that has depreciated, and Gen. John Stark and other state commanders have petitioned the General Court “to have the wages of our soldiers in the Continental Army made good according to contract.”

March 21, 2003: As the war accelerates in Iraq, residents throughout New Hampshire react. “I have really mixed feelings about it,” says Debbie Heckman, as she gets her hair cut at Headlines in Concord. “I support the soldiers and sailors 100 percent, but I just wish it hadn’t come to this.”

March 21, 2001: Voters in Hill approve a $1.5 million plan to move the town offices and library into the elementary school and to turn the town office building into a school.

March 21, 1998: Gilmanton residents vote, 123-110, against teaming up with Pittsfield and Barnstead to build a high school.

The result dashes the hopes of the other two towns; the votes in favor of the proposal had been 145-5 in Pittsfield and 211-2 in Barnstead.

Hampshire Patriot says the Missouri compromise, while disappointing on the whole, “succeeded in rescuing from slavery a vast tract of country, which would otherwise have been expos’d to this dreadful curse.”

March 22, 2002: Sawmill operators and forest owners elsewhere in the country are celebrating a new, 29% federal tariff on subsidized Canadian lumber, but New Hampshire’s timber industry meets the news with mixed emotions. Timer industry experts say the tariffs may have unintended consequences that hurt long traditions of cross-border relationships between sawmill operators and forest owners.

March 22, 1901: The Massachusetts-New Hampshire boundary is finally settled.

March 22, 1851: Former New Hampshire governor and U.S. senator Isaac Hill dies at the age of 63. Hill was once editor of Concord’s New Hampshire Patriot and served in President Andrew Jackson’s “Kitchen Cabinet.”

March 22, 1991: After a long, tawdry, televised trial, a Rockingham County jury finds 23-year-old Pam Smart guilty of arranging the murder of her husband.

Smart’s teenage lover shot Gregory Smart to death 1990. The judge sentences Pam Smart to life without parole.

March 23, 2002: Barnstead voters approve building a high school with Alton, 513-145.

March 23, 2001: Concord was New Hampshire’s fastest-growing city in the 1990s, the U.S. Census Bureau announces. The official

2000 population is listed as 40,687.

March 23, 2000: The New Hampshire House rejects a ban of so-called partialbirth abortions. The 185176 margin surprises many observers. The last time the House voted on such a measure, in 1997, it failed by 80 votes.

March 23, 1770: Eighteen days after the Boston Massacre, a black-bordered issue of the New Hampshire Gazette depicts the victims with drawings of skulls and crossbones and coffins. A subsequent issue will feature a letter stating: “O AMERICANS! This BLOOD calls loud for VENGEANCE!” March 23, 1799: John Prentiss publishes the first issue of the New Hampshire Weekly Sentinel in Keene.

The Sentinel claims to be the fifth oldest newspaper in the country.

March 24, 2002: The University of New Hampshire Wildcats beat Cornell 4-3 in hockey’s NCAA quarterfinals.

March 24, 2000: The state Supreme Court takes away the voting rights of imprisoned felons, overturning a 1998 decision that had made New Hampshire one of four states to enfranchise prisoners. Felons on parole and ex-convicts are not barred from voting.

March 24, 1948: U.S. Sen. Styles Bridges of New Hampshire proposes a 17point plan to stop the spread of Communism. Among the points are “Tell the truth” and “Register all Communists in the United States.”

Says Bridges: “Half-way measures will not stem the Red tide.”
