Every other Friday morning, a group of seniors gathers at the City-Wide Community Center for 90 minutes of music. The Musical Jam group features several violins, an accordion, a guitar, and a harmonica, among other instruments.

“Music just makes you feel joyful.

When you’re playing the instruments you enjoy, you forget about everything else,” said Becky Bukowski, a founding member of the group, which formed a

year ago.

She began playing the fiddle eight years ago and has enjoyed connecting with her musical side since retiring.

“The people who come, most of them have either just picked up an instrument and are learning it or have been learning it the past few years like I have, or they played as a child, went on and lived their lives and sort of forgot about it and now that they’re older and kids have left the home and they’re looking for a hobby. They’ve resurrected it,” Bukowski said.

The music group held a concert in May for the seniors eating lunch at the center and hopes to hold another one in the future.

Senior Program Recreation Specialist Laura Puro emphasized the broad array of activities available to seniors and encouraged people to take advantage of the offerings.

“I think it’s just incredible that if you work your whole life and you’re retired, it’s a great way, these different activities, to socialize and interact with people, just get out of your day-to-day routine, a reason to get out of your house and just go and have fun and make some friends, whether it’s playing a game or bowling or knitting, eating lunch, or musical jam,” Puro said.

Activities include group exercise, board games, outings to local farms, book clubs, monthly lunches, baking, and trips to restaurants in the area.

Patricia Cummings has taken advantage of many offerings at the community center and says the knitting circle is her favorite.

“Some of us donate our scarves and hats and scarves and mittens and that we make to charity and others of course knit for themselves and for family,” she said.

Cummings also appreciates that the adult coloring group meets at the same time – and in the same room – as the knitting circle, so she and her husband, who enjoys coloring, can be together while participating in their respective activities.

The couple attends coffee socials, trivia, walks, holiday parties, concerts, and guest speaker events. Cummings, a quilt historian, even gave a talk on quilts and another on collectible military pillows. She enjoyed being able to share her passion with those in the community.

The center also offers group meals, including senior luncheons that cost $3 for a full meal.

“The main reason we’ve been going is to socialize with other people,” Cummings said. “Also we like the Out To Lunch group that goes to places like the Olive Garden and El Rodeo Mexican Restaurant and others around town. It helps support the local businesses and get together with people. Usually there’s about 20 of us that get together.”

Other opportunities for senior involvement at the Community Center includes table tennis, mah jong, fitness classes, indoor and outdoor walking, trail hikes, cribbage, and Scrabble.

Hiking club gets out in ways that are inspiring and approachable

By HAL CARTER What better and more appropriate way is there to celebrate the 6th anniversary of the Hiking Club at Havenwood Heritage Heights Retirement Community than a trip to hike Mt. Agamenticus in Maine? Thirty members of the Hiking Club, ranging in age from 70 to 93, will travel by bus to enjoy the views of both the White Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean from the summit of the 962-foot mountain.

Some will hike up the mountain while some will ride the bus to the top and hike around the summit trails. And while the hiking ability of the club members may vary, they are united in their understanding that staying physically active in the company of friends as we age is one of the best ways to make that aging process

more fun and, hopefully, last longer.

When Don Hayes, a life-long outdoorsman, moved into HHH six years ago, he wondered whether anyone else would want to go hiking with him. He met with a couple other residents, and they

decided to put out a general invitation asking anyone interested to come to a meeting. To their pleasant surprise, 30 people showed up. Thus was born the HHH Hiking Club. A couple years later, SEE HIKING PAGE 7

the club added biking on rail trails to its activities.

Hayes explains, “The benefits everyone gets from hiking are especially important as we age. We know that older people can maintain and improve their musculoskeletal and cardiovascular health and their balance by the simple act of walking, especially on uneven ground. But perhaps of equal, if not greater, importance are the social and mental health benefits of hiking in nature and in a group at a speed that promotes conversation and

connectedness. I can’t think of many types of exercise that remain accessible to older people and still provide so many advantages.”

Today, the club has a membership of over 100 residents, not all of whom participate in the hikes and bike trips, but all of whom enjoy keeping up on the club’s activities and plans through the monthly newsletter the club publishes. An active Coordinating Committee of 10 residents meets monthly to plan the hikes and other activities. The Coordinating Committee members also check out the planned hikes

ahead of time to make sure they are suitable for the various hiking abilities of club members and then lead the hikes. Hikes range from “Saturday Hikes,” (2 miles long with almost no elevation gain), to “Adventure Hikes,” (4 miles long with elevation gain of up to 500 feet), to “Adventure Plus Hikes,” (up to 8 miles long with 1,000 feet of elevation gain). Hikes are held at least four times per month.

Bike hikes are held two times each month when weather permits.

In addition to the regular hiking and biking trips, the club sponsors

bus trips to hiking opportunities in the White Mountains, Maine and Massachusetts. “Full Moon Walks” on the Heritage Heights Campus followed by a social gathering, and an occasionally sing-along, occur several times each year. A monthly “Forest Bathing” opportunity is offered in the woods behind the campus.

With so many opportunities, the Residents of HHH have many ways of staying active as they age.

A guide to new NH laws for seniors Statewide challenges with affordable housing can have an outsized effect on seniors

The general election is just weeks away, and candidates and voters alike are gearing up toward Nov. 5.

What does that look like for seniors? The New Hampshire Commission on Aging says some issues in this election will especially impact the state’s older population – things like economic stability and housing, the healthcare labor shortage and transportation.

Judith Jones, the healthy aging coordinator at New Futures, a Concord-based nonprofit that advocates for public policy to support health and well-being, laid out some key issues in the Commission’s October newsletter.

Statewide challenges with affordable housing can have an outsized

effect on seniors. With New Hampshire’s large population of older adults, its housing supply isn’t keeping up, and local zoning laws, regulatory red tape and lack of infrastructure in rural areas can make it difficult to build new homes. Seniors are the fastest-growing homeless population, Jones wrote, and the scarcity of affordable senior housing can sometimes cause people to move into assisted living facilities too soon or stay in their houses too long, according to NHPR. In healthcare, facilities around the state have said they’re struggling to hire enough workers – so much so that the Executive Council, which controls the state’s purse strings, voted earlier this year to triple government-run healthcare facilities’ staffing budgets so they can hire more temporary aid. didates about their plans to bring and keep more healthcare professionals in New Hampshire.

As for transportation, most of New Hampshire is made up of small, rural towns with scant public transportation. Nearly 300,000 people are aged 65 or older in the Granite State. Of that population, about 20% do not drive, Jones wrote.

This means many have limited access to transportation, which is vital to get to doctor’s appointments, buy food and complete other necessary tasks. Jones recommended that people ask candidates about how they’ll invest state funds to increase transportation options.

Other areas of interest In the governor’s race, a recent AARP interview put candidates Kelly Ayotte (R) and Joyce Craig (D) on the record about issues relating to seniors.

Ayotte, a former U.S. senator and New Hampshire attorney general, said she wants to find a way to help caregivers with expenses, expand healthcare training programs and degrees at New Hampshire colleges to fix the labor shortage and keep the tax burden on seniors low.

She also supports the state’s recent repeal of the interest and dividends tax and would launch a public information campaign to help protect people from fraud and scams.

Craig, the former three-term mayor of Manchester, said she’ll support New Hampshire’s paid family leave program and work to get the word

out about scams as soon as they crop up. She’d incentivize colleges to host training programs and work to increase pay for healthcare workers, and she’d focus on cutting costs of energy, housing and prescription drugs.

Also on the ballot this year is a referendum, in which voters will decide whether to raise the mandatory retirement age for New Hampshire judges. Currently, judges must retire when they hit age 70 – the proposal on the ballot could raise that to 75.

Rep. Bob Lynn of Windham proposed the bill.

Lynn had to retire from the New Hampshire Supreme Court when he hit age 70 and says the age limit forces out judges who otherwise wouldn’t retire, as reported by Citizens Count.

Opponents of the bill have said the age cap ushers in younger judges and new ideas.

For Betty Shea of Jaffrey, it’s not so much whether you win or lose the game.

It’s getting out there and spending time with friends.

Shea, 87, is a lifelong Jaffrey resident.

She still plays tennis every Monday for an hour and a half at the Monadnock Indoor Tennis Club, participates in a ladies’ league every week at the Shattuck Golf Course, takes fitness classes at Rivermead, where she has lived since 2014, and is a competitive bridge player,

participating in several local groups.

“The camaraderie…that is what is most important,” said Shea. “I love being with the girls. I’m the oldest person in the tennis club, and I’m the oldest person in the golf league, by far! I’m the only one with pure white hair. But no one treats me any differently. It is all about being together and having fun.”

Shea grew up in Jaffrey, where her family founded the Belletete’s chain of hardware stores.

“I’m a Belletete. My grandfather started Elie’s grocery store in Jaffrey; my

parents were Homer and Louise Belletete. We’ve been in business 125 years,” Shea said. “My husband, Ted, worked at Belletete’s for 40 years, and was CEO for 12 years. I’ve been so fortunate and so lucky in my life. We are so grateful to all our wonderful employees over the years. Everything is all thanks to them.”

Both of Shea’s sons work in the family business. Her older son, Mike, is CEO, and her younger son, Matt, runs the Peterborough store. Her daughter, Martha, SEE COVER STORY PAGE 14

lives in Florida with her family, and Betty has six grandchildren.

Shea started playing tennis at Camp Takodah at age 14.

“They needed someone to get out there and play, so I went out there, and I just fell in love and have loved it ever since,” Shea said.

“It’s absolutely my first love.”

When Shea attended high school, the town had no tennis courts, and there was no tennis team. Her love of sports led her to work as a P.E. teacher in the Jaffrey-Rindge school district, where she taught all grades, K-12.

“I still see my old P.E. students, all these years later. Life just comes and goes around,” Shea said.

When asked if she has tried pickleball, Shea admits she is not a convert.

“It’s just so different from tennis. The racquet is different, the ball is different. It’s just not tennis,” she said. “And I really love tennis.”

decades, Shea played tennis at her neighbor Marian Johnson’s tennis courts. The Sheas were lifelong members of the Thorndyke Club, where they enjoyed the club’s clay tennis courts. Shea has also been a longtime member of the Monadnock Indoor Tennis Club, where she played singles, doubles, and team tennis.

Shea has fond memories of playing competitive team tennis for years. She just laughs when asked about winning trophies or championships.

“We traveled all over the place for years playing team tennis,” she says. “We had a ball.”

Shea was also deeply involved with the Jaffrey Historical Society for 40 years.

“I’ve held every position on the board,” she said.

After Ted was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016, the couple moved to Rivermead in Peterborough.

“We knew this would be a wonderful place to come, and my husband was very happy here. I knew I couldn’t live alone – I’m very social, and I love people. It is really wonderful here — they get you involved. It takes some getting used to, not being in your house anymore. It’s an adjustment to live this way. But it’s a wonderful feeling to always have people around and to have so many things to do,” Shea said.

“It started out as a normal outing. My wife and I had to run to the grocery store. We were driving down the road casually going over our shopping list when the car ahead of me started to slow down anticipating the yellow light. I started to move my foot from the gas to the brake as any normal person would do when they see brake lights in front of them, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t feel my foot. The car kept moving forward and I just couldn’t get my foot on the brake and CRUNCH! I finally came to a stop when I hit the Car in front of me.”

This tragic story was shared with us by Mike S., a New Hampshire resident who has Peripheral Neuropathy. While no one was hurt in this accident, Mike S. had suffered almost every day of his life with tingling and burning in his feet until numbness set in, and he could no longer feel even the brake pedal beneath his foot.

Navigating the holidays Tips for dementia family caregivers

By MELISSA GRENIER The holidays are often filled with opportunities for togetherness, sharing, laughter and memories. But they can also bring stress, disappointment and sadness. A person living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia may feel a special sense of loss during the holidays because of the changes they have experienced.

At the same time, caregivers may feel overwhelmed maintaining traditions while providing care.

The following tips may help you make the holidays easier and happier occasions:

Adjust expectations – Call a face-to-face meeting or arrange for a group discussion via telephone, video chat or email for

family and friends to discuss holiday celebrations.

– Give yourself permission to do only what you can reasonably manage.

– Familiarize others with your situation by writing a letter or e-mail.

Involve the person living with Alzheimer’s – Involve the person in safe, manageable holiday preparation activities that they enjoy. Ask them to help you prepare food, wrap packages, help decorate or set the table.

(Avoid using candies, artificial fruits and vegetables as decorations because a person living with dementia might confuse them with real food. Blinking lights may also confuse the person.)

– Maintain the person’s normal routine as much as possible.

By L. PHILLIPS RUNYON III This special section on active aging encompasses a lot more than staying physically active through walks, yoga and pilates. After all, we can only play so many rounds of golf and the golf season is just a few months of the year in the Monadnock Region.

It also means staying active in the community, through volunteer work for the many non-profit organizations that do such good work and by serving on town boards and committees that always need members with experience and judgment.

Many know Concord Community Music School as a welcoming place to enjoy lessons, classes, workshops, and recitals. But fewer are aware that the school also has a robust Expressive Arts Therapy department, where music is used within a therapeutic relationship to address a person’s physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs.

To learn more, I recently accompanied CCMS’s Dance Movement Therapist Heather Bigelow Hearne to a Movement and Song for Memory and Mobility class at a local assisted living community. We were led into a large room where about two dozen chairs were set in a large oval. Thirteen residents attended the class, about half with cognitive issues. During the class, Heather is part cheerleader, part den mother, and 100% invested in creating “wow moments.” (And notably, she explained to the participants the valid physical and neurological purpose of each exercise.)

her if she enjoyed music. She enthusiastically answered “YES!,” then got up from her chair to dance in place.

Heather asked each person to play a wooden African drum while saying their name three times. After we were about halfway around the circle, I confessed to the woman to my left – let’s call her “Sally” – that I’d already forgotten the first few names. She placed her hand on mine and gently reassured me that I wasn’t the only absent-minded one.

Heather followed up with more guided imagery, asking the group to imagine blowing on a fluffy white dandelion and making three wishes. While we kept our wishes to ourselves, there were many smiles to be seen.

She then had the class sing along with her to “Razzama Tazzama” (“Bim bom.

Bim bom. Razza-ma, tazza-ma. Tish tosh, tish tosh. Wally woo woo”) while moving their bodies. When Heather asked Amanda which phrase or movement was her favorite, Amanda leaned forward in her chair, slapped both hands on her thighs, and loudly exclaimed, “All of them!”

When Heather and I left, staff was setting up for Happy Hour, an event held “every two weeks or so.” And in keeping with our class’s “young at heart” attitude, everyone is required to show their ID before being served. No exceptions.

‘Weekend warriors’ may gain same benefits

Weekend warriors – people who pack most of their physical activity into one or two days – may gain the same health-protective benefits as people who exercise throughout the week, as long as they get the recommended amount, new research finds.

The study found regardless of whether people concentrated their 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity over a short period of time or stretched it out over the week, the risk fell for more than 200 diseases over the next six years, with the strongest associations found among cardiometabolic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

The findings were published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation and presented at the German Cardiac Society’s Heart Days conference in Hamburg.

“The bottom line is that it’s really the total volume of physical activity,

rather than the pattern, that matters,” said Dr. Shaan Khurshid, the study’s co-senior author and a cardiac electrophysiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. “The important thing is that you get your recommended levels of physical activity. If one to two days a week works for you, you’re still going to get that benefit.”

Physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular and other diseases. Federal physical activity guidelines recommend adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorousintensity physical activity each week, or a combination of both.

There’s little guidance, however, on how that activity should be spread throughout the week.

physical activity over a one- or twoday period and are largely inactive the rest of the week, would get the same health benefits as people who spread their 150 minutes of exercise throughout the week.

Using data from the UK Biobank, a large database containing genetic and medical information on volunteers in the United Kingdom, researchers analyzed physical activity levels and disease prevalence for 89,573 people who were an average 62 years old.

Physical activity was measured using wrist-based accelerometers that participants wore for one week. They also tracked the development of 678 diseases over a median 6.3 years of follow-up, including circulatory, digestive, skin, endocrine/metabolic, kidney, infectious, musculoskeletal and neurological diseases, along with cancers, mental health disorders and injuries.

Among participants who met the

recommended weekly amount of physical activity, those who exercised throughout the week achieved a median of 418 minutes. Weekend warriors, however, were substantially more active in a shorter period, with a median of 288 minutes.

Compared to people who did not meet the recommended amount of exercise per week, being a weekend warrior was associated with a reduced risk for 264 health conditions and being active throughout the week was associated with a lower risk for 205 conditions.

The strongest associations between physical activity and lower disease risk were found among cardiometabolic conditions, including a more than 20% lower risk for high blood pressure, more than 40% lower risk for diabetes and sleep apnea, and a roughly 50% lower risk for obesity. There were no significant differences in disease risk reduction between weekend warriors and weeklong exercisers when they were compared directly.

The report showed that 3.6 percent of older adults did not get medication because of the high cost, and 3.4 percent of older adults did not take medication as prescribed because of the cost. “Cost-related nonadherence” was six times higher among older adults who were food insecure and more than twice as likely among older adults with fair or poor health or disabilities than those in better health.

“These findings may inform efforts to reduce disparities in healthcare access and health outcomes for older adults,” the authors wrote.
