Swim spots for the whole family to enjoy

hether you’re seeking a comfortable place to cool off, a natural lake to swim in or a local pool to bring friends and family, Concord and the surrounding areas are full of hidden gems and natural water bodies.

However, many of the recommended swimming areas in the county don’t have lifeguards on duty, besides at the Concord city swimming pools, and drownings in the Merrimack River have increased over the last several years as city goers plunge into a current invisible to the surface.

When swimming in a river, a lake or any body of water that is either unfamiliar or an undercurrent could be present, try to swim with friends. If not a strong swimmer, have a life jacket with you – it will save your life.

recreation department can hire will determine the number of pools that will be opened.

The pools are free for use for Concord and Penacook residents with proof of identification while nonresidents can buy a season-long pool pass for $175 or a 48-hour pass for $25. Both passes can be purchased at the recreation office or

the citywide community center.

Merrimack River & Sewalls Falls A moving body of water, like the Merrimack River, is one of the most dangerous places to swim, especially for children or inadequate swimmers.

Still, there are several small areas of calm water at off-the-beaten-path beaches throughout the 214-acre

recreation area which has trails along 5-miles of the Merrimack River, the most popular of which is a trail leading from the boat launch area toward the Merrimack shoreline where swimmers can find corners of calm waters to take a dip in.

However, there are no sanctioned swimming areas along the river and there are no lifeguards on duty monitoring the waterway.

State Parks Though easy to access, parks across the state require an entrance fee of around $4 per adult and $2 for children between the ages of six and 11 while admittance is free for children under the age of five and seniors over the age of 65. The fees may differ per park.

Clough State Park, which is located about 20 minutes from Concord, sits on a public reservation area on the east side of Everett Lake about five miles east of the town of Weare. The lake is formed by a dam on the Piscataquog River and is open weekends beginning Memo-

rial Day weekend and daily from late June through Labor Day. About 30 minutes east of Clough State Park sits Bear Brook State Park in Allenstown where residents can enjoy hiking over 10,000 acres of conservation land. Throughout the property, there are several lakes and ponds where residents can swim, specifically Catamount and Bear Hill ponds. Bear Hill Pond can be accessed to the south of the property by Bear Hill Pond Road while Catamount Pond, which offers boating and kayaking, is accessed through the north entrance of the state park.

To the west of Concord by about 15 minutes is Elm Brook Park which is part of the Hopkinton-Everett Lakes Reservoir and maintained by the U.S. Army Corps. Once inside the reservoir, which may require a small fee per vehicle, visitors can swim in Hopkinton Lake and will have access to picnic areas with grills and a playground, recreational boating and kayaking and sporting fields for soccer, basketball and baseball.

Tucked away behind the Opechee Peninsula in Laconia along the shores of Lake Winnepesaukee are two swimming areas – Opechee

Cove and Opechee Point – 40 minutes north of the city. Because the water in the cove doesn’t move as often as other beaches, it can often test high in e. coli while the point tests better than the cove. Look for signs before entering either water bodies. There is no fee for parking.

Beaches Located closest to Concord are Griffin and Lagace beaches in Franklin which both sit on Webster Lake. The beaches have a sandy shoreline and a green lawn space for picnicking, according to the city’s website. Parking permits are required by residents and all non-residents can purchase permits for a small fee from the beach attendants at the entrance or through the Parks and Recreation Department. To the north of Concord by about 45 minutes is Weirs Beach in the northern corner of Laconia on Lake Winnipesaukee in Endicott Lake Park.

There are no lifeguards on duty and patrons must pay at the parking kiosks before using the beach.

And if you prefer saltwater above all, the ocean is only about an hour to the east from Concord, in Portsmouth, Rye and Hampton or across the bridge to Maine in Ogunquit and York.

adnock in Greenfield down to Mount Watatic in Massachusetts. The Wapack is an easy-to-moderate hike with a number of parking areas along the way, perfect for a day jaunt. You can find a map on the Friends of the Wapack website. Incidentally, it’s one of a score or so of long-distance hiking trails throughout New Hampshire that aren’t in the White Mountains. Even if they lack the grandeur of the Franconia Loop they are accessible to families without being too boring for experienced hikers. A little online searching will find possibilities near you; check it out.

Catherine McLaughlin: Honestly, I really like going for a run through the downtown area – but early in the morning. Downtown is always pretty, but it’s quite peaceful and stately in the morning hours. I’ll go for a lap or two around the pond at White Park, weave through the granite buildings, and get some (and blissfully flat) miles in the South End. At the risk of sounding cranky, it really is better

before everyone wakes up and there’s cars buzzing by.

Rebeca Pereira: Every morning, I walk a loop around my neighborhood that brings me past Concord High School and down the length of Clinton Street. The abandoned gas station across from the school shutters to life with a slow trickle of cars, and plenty of students mosey toward the school on foot, backpacks slung over their shoulders. The current of people gathers speed as the morning rolls along. I count little free libraries and delight in amusing yard signs; I read the same ones every morning, but they never get old. One reminds passersby that, thankfully, ‘Presidents are Temporary, Wu-Tang is Forever.’ That alone gets my shoulders to relax and my jaw to unclench.

At the intersection before the federal courthouse, cars wait their turn with surprising courtesy. I try not to roll my ankles on the uneven sidewalk after the crosswalk, and I defi-

nitely make an effort to avoid awkward eye contact with the drivers of oncoming cars, but it’s a fun trek back to my apartment, and it always makes me reflect on the wonderful accessibility of walking. You don’t need the perfect shoes or the ideal weather or the pristine trail. Just open your door and step outside.

Alex Rapp: As a UNH alum, I loved exploring the seacoast when I lived out there.

Yes, I know the topic is “Staycation” but really, it’s not that far of a drive. I love going to Rye Beach in the summer, lying out on the sand, going for a swim and reading a good book.

The food options, the walks up and down the coast, the water… It’s tough to beat a good beach day out there. Afterwards, going to Portsmouth for dinner, whether it’s something quick and easy like a burger and some ice cream or something a bit more upscale, isn’t a bad way to end the day. I know there are plenty of things to do around here, too, but those who lived out there

know what it’s like in the summer.

One hour each way from Concord and a full day of fun.

Rachel Wachman: I have a friend who moved to Bow last year, and we’ve spent time this spring exploring the lovely network of trails near her house. There’s hilly slopes, a few stream crossings and lots of lush trees blooming with new greenery at this time of year. I’ve also enjoyed walking around the pond by the Bow Parks and Recreation Department, and I’ve found that all the trails in the area lend themselves well to strolling, brisk walking and even running. I’m new to trail running so it’s been a great place to explore and get more comfortable navigating rocks, roots, tree stumps and such. The beauty of the Bow forests is that they’re close, accessible and full of birds and other wildlife. The next time you’re looking for a new place to explore or just somewhere nearby to spend time after work, I highly recommend checking it out!

Summer theater in the Monadnock Region

he Monadnock region is a destination for summer theater, with everything from Shakespeare to brand-new plays and emerging companies.

Andy’s Summer Playhouse in Wilton has been performing children’s theater since 1985. Andy’s is a magical experience, from the original 1859 meeting house which serves a the theater, to the professional choreography, music, costumes and the exuberance of young actors.

Andy’s 2026 summer plays include “Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase,” which will be performed on select dates between July 11 to 18, and “The Forest Knows,” a “folk musical” by Marina Pires. For more information or to purchase tickets for a performance, go to andyssummerplayhouse.org.

The Peterborough Players, one of the oldest summer theaters in the country, will present five full-length professional performances this

hether you’re looking for a nice hiking spot, or have a love of flowers, summertime is the best time of year to explore the more than 2,700 acres of Rhododendron State Park.

In 1901, in response to the current owner’s plans to conduct a lumber operation on the property, Mary Lee Ware, a resident of Boston, Mass. and Rindge, purchased the land and gifted it to the Appalachian Mountain Club in 1903, with the stipulation that the rhododendron grove and pine forest be protected and open to the public “forever.”

The AMC held the property until 1946, when it was transferred to the N.H. Division of Parks and Recreation, when it began operating as the state’s only designated botanical state park.

As its name suggests, the park’s main feature is a 16-acre Rhododen-

dron Maximum grove, which is the largest in northern New England.

The grove was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1982. If you enjoy hiking or scenic walks, there is a short trail — just over half a mile — that is universally accessible and travels around the grove.

The best time to experience is during the height of the blooming season, from late June to July.

There is also a wildflower trail, which traverses the forested area near the grove, that makes a lovely walk from early spring all the way until the fall.

Entrance to the park is $4, or $2 for children aged 6 to 11, and free for children under 5. The park is located at 424 Rockwood Pond Road in Fitzwilliam. This park is open for recreation year-round, though it may not be staffed during off-hours or off-season. For more information, visit nhstateparks.org. Hop on the bus! You won’t regret it.

raveling is a great way to explore, learn, and enjoy life, but planning a vacation can be daunting. It can be challenging to navigate all of the options, and it can leave you scouring the internet for days, weeks or even months!

The good news is that it doesn’t need to be that hard! Choosing a group tour can take the stress out of travel. It’s easy: You make your reservation, pack your bags and are ready to go! The old-school mentality that group tours are for “old” people is passé, whereas the new group traveler is looking for fun, adventure and traveling companions that make the trip enjoyable — without all of the hassle.

Times are changing, and companies that are keeping up are crafting tours that

meet the needs of the modern group traveler. Just because you want to be able to sit back, relax, and leave the driving to someone else doesn’t mean that it needs to be boring! Traveling keeps you active and can leave you feeling refreshed and recharged. Plus, traveling on a group tour can open the door to new friendships.

Whether you want to experience a Broadway show, take a scenic or cultural regional trip, or if you are looking for a bucket-list adventure — the possibilities are endless! In order to choose the right tour for you, it is important to learn more about the differences between the various companies and the tours that they offer. (And I am here to help!)

If you are hesitant to “hop on the bus,” it may be a good idea to test the waters with a day trip to a

nearby destination. It is a great way to learn more about a local tour company, meet other travelers, and get a sense of what it is like to travel on a group tour without committing to a longer tour.

If you aren’t sure which company to choose, just remember that all tours are not created equal. Today’s group travelers are more active, more adventurous, and savvier when it comes to travel. There are a lot of differences between tour companies, and it is important to choose the one that is right for you.

When choosing a trip, comfort matters. So does pacing. A well-planned outing should feel enjoyable, not rushed. It should leave enough time to take in the scenery, enjoy the company of your fellow travelers and appreciate the moment. That kind of thoughtful travel can be es-

pecially rewarding as we get older.

Another thing to consider is that the brochure price isn’t always a clear picture of the overall cost or value of the trip. How many meals are included?

Are all of the activities and admissions to attractions included, or will you be digging into your pocket every time you hop off the bus? Take a close look at what is included in the price of the tour — at the end of the day, a lower price on the brochure doesn’t always mean lower cost to you.

There is also a difference between budget tours and higher-end tour offerings — learn more about the accommodations, inclusions, and pace before deciding which is best for you.

yourself. Are the hotels the style and location that you would choose? Will you be up at dawn and busy all day, or are you taking a more leisurely approach? Are you looking for a budget-conscious option, a luxury travel experience or something in between?
