Asprawling,interstatetrailthat traversesmorethan20miles,the WapackTrailhasmultipleentry points,climbstothesummitsof variouspeakswithviewsasfaras Boston,makingitanidealplaceto exploreforbothlong-andshortformhikerswantingtoexplorethe Monadnockregion’snatural beauty.
Wapack–namedMountWatatic atitsstartingpointinAshburnham, Massachusetts,andPackMonadnockatitsnorthernend–thetrail istheoldestinterstatehikingtrail inthenortheast,derivedfromold cattletrailsusedtobringlivestock fromMassachusettstopastureland. Thesedays,thevariousconnected trailsthatmakeuptheentire21mileone-wayroutearemaintained bytheFriendsoftheWapack,avol-
hasmultipleentrypoints,climbsto thesummitsofvarious peaks with views as far as Boston
unteerorganizationthathelpmaintainthetrailsandkeeptheyellow
blazesthatmarkitfresh.
TheWapackTraildatesbackto
1923,whenFrankRobbinsof RindgeandMarionDavisofNew Ipswich,completedmostofthe trailwork(Daviswastheonewho coinedthetrail’sname,andboth arenowhonoredwithsidetrails namedafterthemalongtheroute).
Crossingbothpublicandprivate land,thetrailalsocrossesthrough severallargeareasthathavebeen permanentlypreserved,including theAshbyWildlifeManagement Area,theWapackNationalWildlife Refuge,MillerStateParkand TempleMountainStateReservation,andparcelsconservedbyThe NatureConservancy,theNewEnglandForestryFoundation,and NortheastWildernessTrust.
Towalktheentiretrailtakes about11hours,foranexperienced hiker,makingitachallengingday hike–butthereisnoneedtocompletetheentiretrail,forthose lookingforawell-marked,welltraveledtrailwithlovelyviews,and accesstoavarietyofside-trailsthat rangebetween.5and1.5milesfor suitablefamilyhikes.
