Ins and Outs of Ethical Practice (1.5 CE) 8:35 am – 10:05 am

Program Description To ensure an ethical practice of psychology, it would be helpful to know the typical pitfalls, as well as having a clear understanding of the standards and regulations.

What kinds of complaints does the Board of Psychological Examiners receive and investigate? What are best practices for record-keeping? When psychologists reach out to the NJPA Ethics Committee, with questions, what are the major areas of concern?

Taking these factors into consideration, aspirational goals should be set, as well, recommendations will be provided for establishing and running an ethical private practice.

Learning Objectives 1. Describe at least 3 issues frequently brought before the NJ Board of Psychological Examiners.

2. Review the application of NJ Board of Professional Examiners regulations and identify two best practices in record keeping for NJ psychologists.

3. Identify at least two common ethical dilemmas experienced by psychologists in independent practice.

4. Assess the need to change any of their current practices to ensure they are in compliance with APA Ethical Guidelines.

5. Discuss at least two aspirational goals for ethical independent practice.

Presenters: Sean Evers. PhD, is a licensed psychologist in private practice. He works in a multidisciplinary setting providing individual and group psychotherapy. He also provides forensic services focused on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He received his first master’s degree from the New School for Social Research, Graduate Faculty Center, his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Professional School of Psychology at Florida Institute of Technology, and his Post-Doctoral Masters in Clinical Psychopharmacology from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Susan McGroarty, PhD, is Director of Professional Affairs (DPA) for the New Jersey Psychological Association, and Director of Behavioral Medicine at Inspira Medical Center Family Medicine ResidencyMullica Hill. She is an Associate Clinical Professor at Rowan University School of Medicine and an Adjunct Professor in the PsyD Program in Clinical Psychology at Chestnut Hill College (Philadelphia). She has written articles, book chapters, and given numerous presentations at the regional and national level on numerous topics. She has served as co-chair, chair, and invited members for regional and national psychological organizations. An ardent advocate of human rights and social justice, when not working, look for her to be paddle-boarding on the bays and inlets around the NJ shore.

Jayne Schachter, PhD, is a licensed psychologist with more than 30 years of experience in working with children, adolescents, and families. She is currently in private practice with the Morris Psychological Group in Parsippany.

Currently, she is a member of the NJ Craniofacial Center which treats children with

congenital and acquired craniofacial disorders. In addition to direct patient care, a large component of Dr. Schachter’s work has included training and supervision, and she held an appointment as an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Rhonda Allen, PhD, is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Morristown, New Jersey.

She was an

Adjunct Faculty Member of Rutgers University from 1993 –1994. Dr. Allen has been in private practice in Morristown, New Jersey since 1991. She works with adults, individually and as couples. She was a member of the New Jersey Psychological Association Ethics Committee from 2015 -2021. She is currently serving her second, three-year term as a member of APA Council of Representatives representing the New Jersey Psychological Association. Dr. Allen also serves as a member of the NJPA Executive Board in her role as APA Representative. She is also past-president of the Morris County Psychological Association.

Sharing Psychology through the Media (1.5 CE) 10:20 am – 11:50 am

Program Description Dr. Becker-Phelps has developed a focus on helping people who struggle in relationships and with attachment issues. She will share her journey in choosing a niche and developing as a writer (through books and blogs) and teacher (largely in-person and through her YouTube channel) as a way to help people from around the world to develop greater psychological health. She will explain how she developed her niche and what she has learned along the way.

Dr. Alexandra Miller Clark will share practical “how to” guidelines on how to start a podcast. She will share her personal story of what it has been like to share psychology through the media and will also touch on YouTube and self-publishing. Dr. Alexandra will discuss how her media work has impacted her private practice and touch on her own internal barriers to doing media work.

Learning Objectives 1. Recognize how to overcome internal barriers to sharing psychology through the media.

2. List steps they can take to expand their expertise to share psychology through the media.

3. Apply practical steps on how to share psychology through a podcast.

4. Utilize sharing psychology through YouTube.

5.Describe societal pressure on women / women of color that impact women in the media.

Presenters: Leslie Becker-Phelps, PhD, is a well-respected licensed psychologist, who is dedicated to helping people understand themselves and what they need to do to become emotionally and psychologically healthy. She has a YouTube channel and is a prolific writer who authored the books Insecure in Love (translated into 5 other languages) and Bouncing Back from Rejection; and has a blog called Making Change for Psychology Today. For over 10 years, she also wrote the weekly Relationships blog for WebMD. She offers individual and couples therapy in New Jersey and New York, as well as providing telehealth therapy in Florida. Opening, Closing, and Choosing the Best Business Model (1.5 CE) 12:20 pm – 1:50 pm

Program Description This program will focus on legal and administrative aspects of opening and closing a psychological practice with an eye towards choosing the best model that would fit an individual psychologist’s needs. We will consider the options of developing and maintaining a solo practice for a private practitioner, as well as starting, joining, and maintaining an LLC, PC, or group practice. Finally, we will review the legal and administrative issues involved in retirement and closing a practice.

Learning Objectives 1. Identify and understand the implications of the solo practitioner model and the different types of group models.

2. Be able to discuss the role of independent contractors and employees when considering a group affiliation.

3. Be able to appreciate how concerns, such as emergencies, supervision, insurance, practice specialties, Tarasoff issues, etc. are addressed in solo versus group practices.

4. To comprehend the legal and administrative steps necessary to retire and/or close a psychological practice or leave a group.

Presenters: James Wulach, PhD, JD, is a practicing psychologist and attorney in Edison, New Jersey. He is Professor of Psychology at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York, where he is the former Director of the MA Program in Forensic Mental Health Counseling, Coordinator of the Postgraduate Certificate Program in Forensic Psychology, Coordinator of the MA-JD dual-degree program with New York Law School (which he designed), and faculty member of the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program at John Jay College.

He is a former president of the New Jersey Psychological Association, and the recipient of its 2013 Distinguished Teacher Award, and 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award. He is a past-president of the New Jersey Academy of Psychologists, and a past-chair of the Committee on Professional Practices and Standards of the American Psychological Association. He is a past-president of the Society of Psychologists in Private Practice (SPPP, since renamed EUCAP). He is the recipient of the American Psychological Association's 1997 Karl F. Heiser Award for Advocacy. He is the New Jersey Psychological Association’s 1999 Psychologist of the Year. He is the 2004 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Psychologists in Private Practice.

compulsive disorder. Dr. Rosenberg started her career at an outpatient community mental health program at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. She then ran her own solo private practice for several years before joining Morris Psychological Group, a large interdisciplinary psychology practice. She became a partner of Morris Psychological Group in 2015, and, since then, has been involved in many aspects of running the practice.

Dr. Rosenberg is presently on the medical staff of

Morristown Medical Center. She has held board positions with the New Jersey Psychological Association and the Morris County Psychological Association. She is a member of the International Obsessive-Compulsive Foundation, the New Jersey Affiliate of the International ObsessiveCompulsive Foundation, and the New Jersey Association of Cognitive Behavior Therapists.

Forensically Attuned Practices for Clinicians (1.5 CE) 2:05 pm – 3:35 pm Program Description Situations sometime arise in everyday clinical practice in which psychologists are called upon to interface with the legal system. This might involve one of the psychologist’s patients suddenly becoming involved in divorce litigation or after an accident initiating a lawsuit. This presentation will focus upon best practices for the psychologist suddenly faced with a subpoena, a request for patient records, or a letter on behalf of the patient for their litigation. Liabilities, minefields, and the most appropriate course of actions will be discussed.

Learning Objectives 1. Cite three issues involving the legal system that arise in everyday clinical practice.

2. Discuss the best practices when interfacing with the legal system and/or litigants.

3. Identify three areas of potential liability while treating clients involved in active litigation.

Presenters: Sharon Ryan Montgomery, PsyD, is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Morristown, New Jersey.

Her areas of expertise are in clinical and forensic psychology. She taught and lectured extensively, having presented papers at both the National and International Child Abuse Conferences for ICLE and at the NJ Judicial College, Judges Retreat and for the newly appointed judges. Dr. Montgomery served as an expert in over 2000 custody disputes in New Jersey, as well as other states, and has also conducted evaluations in criminal matters, personal injury, marital tort cases, and testified in court on numerous occasions. She also serves as an Individual, Couples, Family, and Reconciliation Therapist, as well as Parenting Coordinator, Mediator, Divorce Coach, and supervises other psychologists. Dr. Montgomery also provides intensive therapy workshops/weekends for families in which a child is refusing contact with a parent through the Building Family Resilience Program. She is the Director of New Ways for Families Program of New Jersey, which provides short term psycho-educational skills training for families involved in divorce. Dr. Montgomery is past-president of the New Jersey Psychological Association and the New Jersey Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, Human Services Association of Morris County, and the Morris County Psychological Association.

Marcy Pasternak, PhD, engages in private practice as a clinical and forensic psychologist. Her practice serves individuals, couples, and families of all ages. She treats a wide range of problems, and areas of special interest and expertise including couples and family therapy, divorce therapy with children and adults, reunification therapy, family and divorce mediation, forensic evaluations (eg. custody and visitation, removal, grandparent visitation, sexual harassment, post-traumatic stress, battered women, employment discrimination, personal injury), parenting coordination, post-judgement dispute mediation, therapeutic mediation, treatment of mood disorders, and women’s issues. She conducts Intensive Family Interventions of families in which a child resists contact with a parent. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at UMDNJ-NJ Medical School. She is also the past-president of the New Jersey chapter of AFCC.

Reaching the Underserved Community (1.0 CE) 3:50 pm – 4:50pm

Program Description

Learning Objectives

The concept of “underserved” covers many groups, and there are many barriers that keep underserved populations from engaging and continuing in treatment with psychologists in individual or group private practices. The issues range from finances to location to implicit messages sent by the psychologist’s advertising to the psychologist’s understanding of the client’s needs and perspectives. Implicit biases can make these barriers invisible to clinicians. This workshop will examine these issues and make recommendations for those who wish to expand their practices. Particular attention will be paid to the needs of low-income, economically marginalized clients, to clients from nondominant ethnic and racial backgrounds, and from nondominant sexual orientations and gender identities.

1. Identify two ways in which their marketing and media attempts may distance underserved clients.

2. Recognize two ways in which their offices may discourage underserved clients from making use of their professional services.

3. Identify two ways in which they may engage with clients that, on an initial visit, could alienate underserved clients.

Presenters: Susan Esquilin, PhD, is a licensed psychologist, trained in developmental and clinical psychology. She served on the faculties of Montclair State, Rutgers, and University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ. Dr. Esquilin testified as an expert in criminal, family court, and civil matters. She was part of a faculty that developed and taught a decade-long course sponsored by Rutgers School of Social Work and the NJ Department of Children and Families that trained psychologists and psychiatrists to function as expert evaluators in child protection matters. Dr. Esquilin presented at both state and national conferences, and is the author of many articles regarding child abuse and trauma, the significance of race and culture on psychological issues and treatment, and the role of mental health professionals in the child welfare system. She is the co-author of a recent book chapter on forensic evaluations of parents in the child protection system. Dr. Esquilin serves on the Model Court Committee in Essex County and is a member of the Equity and Fairness, as well as the Child Well-Being Subcommittees.

The NJ Psychological Association named Dr. Esquilin New Jersey Psychologist of the Year for 2017 and awarded her the NJPA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.

Aida Ismael-Lennon, PsyD, is a certified school psychologist and a licensed psychologist in NY and NJ. For the past two decades, she's provided her services to underserved minority populations in urban areas throughout NY and NJ. In addition to providing assessment, consultation, and counseling in a variety of settings, including urban school districts, and psychiatric residential treatment facility and pediatric clinic settings, she maintains a private practice where she provides consultation for the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (formerly DYFS), and the office of the public defender, providing forensic evaluations and expert testimony for family court judges in New Jersey. Dr. Lennon also conducts child custody evaluations for the family courts in Westchester County, New York. She maintains an active role in the New Jersey Psychological Association having served as co-chair for the Committee of Diversity and Inclusion for the past two terms, co-chair for the Committee on Legislative Affairs, and board member. Dr. Lennon presented on trauma-informed practices at the Center for Child and Family Traumatic Stress at Kennedy Krieger Institute, Seton Hall University, local charter schools, and more recently at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology.

Denise M. Williams Johnson, PhD, is a New Jersey licensed psychologist who has been in private practice for over 28 years in Essex County. Some of Dr. Johnson’s professional experiences include evaluation and court services to the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCP&P), the Law Guardian’s Office, and the Office of Parental Representation; supervision, consultation, and presentations about cultural issues in evaluations and treatment; and co-authored a chapter on the role of contextual, personal, and racial trauma in child protection forensic evaluations.

Spring Conference Policies NJPA ensures that any permission for proprietary information utilized in NJPA programs and the safeguarding of these materials is discussed with the presenter. NJPA program attendees are not permitted to share the programs materials received either in hard copy form or electronically. Full attendance qualifies for a total of 7 hours of CE credit for psychologists; no partial credit will be granted.
