Student Recreation Center Leading the Way in Sustainability Efforts… Georgia State University’s Student Recreation Center has recently been certified using the Green Globes green building rating system for Continual Improvement of Existing Buildings (CIEB). A first for the Georgia State campus, Green Globes is a revolutionary green building guidance and assessment program that offers an effective, practical and affordable way to advance the overall environmental performance and sustainability of commercial buildings. Based on its recognized and proven assessment protocol, the system ensures that environmental impacts are comprehensively assessed on a point scale in multiple categories (energy, indoor environment, site, water, resources, emissions and project/environmental management). Since 2004, Green Globes has built a strong presence as a nationally recognized rating and assessment system. Its web applications have been recognized in legislation in 25 states and have assessed, improved and certified 130+ buildings in the United States. We are the first existing University recreation center in the country to receive Green Globes certification (proudly, 3 out of a possible 4 Globes in the rating system). This means we demonstrate leadership in design and delivery of energy and environmentally sensitive buildings and a commitment to continual improvement. Since the Student Recreation Center opened in 2001, we have continually striven to reduce our environmental impact with no specific green building rating or assessment planned. Environmental stewardship has been a key operating strategy to both reduce our carbon footprint and reduce operating costs. Buildings rated or certified Green Globes are verified to use less energy, conserve natural resources and emit fewer pollutants in the form of greenhouse gases, airborne particulates, liquid effluents and solid waste. We continue to lead the way on campus and across the country for existing University recreation centers in our sustainability efforts. ~Scott Levin

Touch the Earth Challenge Program Graduate Assistant: Emily Caliento Inquiries and scheduling: ChallengeProgram@gsu.edu Coordinator: Carson Tortorige Telephone: 404/413-1773 Email: ctort@gsu.edu Location: Room 30, lower level , Student Recreation Center

What is the Challenge Program? The Challenge Program offers people innovative ways to improve their abilities when working with others. This learn-by-doing approach focuses on creative problem solving and effective communication. Join us in a day of fun experiences that will activate inner resources, increase trust and enhance group cohesion. Each program is tailored to meet the needs of the group. Our team of facilitators has experience with clubs, office units, social organizations and corporate groups.

Where is the program facilitated? Our rustic lodge and outdoor ropes course is located in the Indian Creek Recreation Area off of South Indian Creek Drive. Team building sessions can also be conducted on the GSU campus.

How do I schedule? ■ Email challengeprogram@gsu.edu or call 404/413-1773 ■ Reserve date at least one month in advance ■ Make payment at least one month in advance to avoid cancellation ■ Confirm all details no later than two weeks in advance A minimum of 10 people is required but larger groups are easily accommodated. Sessions may range from two hours to half day to a full day.

How much does it cost? Full day cost: Up to $30 per GSU student Up to $35 per GSU faculty/staff person

includes activities and lunch. Non-GSU groups must contact Carson Tortorige (404/413-1773) for fee structure. Cost varies depending on program length and size of group.

What do people say about the Touch the Earth Challenge Program? “The ultimate proof of the success of this program was walking into class the next day and looking at all my classmates in a completely different light. They were no longer just people filling a chair in the classroom, they were now my friends, people I can talk to, trust and depend on.” ~Lindsey William, MGS 3400 “Overall, I enjoyed the Ropes Course and wish that other students could have the same opportunity to participate in it. It helped me to build new relationships with my classmates and learn to trust people more. Also, I was able to climb trees and learned how to walk on ropes. I can tell now my friends and family that I do other stuff besides study while attending Georgia State.” ~Reginald Dennis, MGS 3400

NEEDED: Staff to facilitate teambuilding sessions call Carson Tortorige at 404/413-1773.
