John Krafka Guinness Book of World Records for breaking the world’s record for van stuffing.

John began his tenure at Georgia State in 1974 fresh out of graduate school from the University of Iowa. Over the years he was either directly or indirectly involved with most of the department programming areas. His involvement with Indian Creek Recreation Area may be one of his greatest accomplishments; with hundreds of groups and thousands of participants using the facilities over the years for meetings, retreats, team-building events, pool parties, swim lessons, tennis classes and sand volleyball games. His involvement in the 1995 Lodge renovation was critical to the success of the future of this jewel in the GSU Crown.

After 37 years of service to Georgia State University, John Krafka officially retired at the end of November. Most cannot imagine the growth and change of the University and the Department of Recreational Services over the years, nor can anyone sum up ones’ career in a few short paragraphs.

John wore many hats over the years and played a critical role in the planning and construction of the Student Recreation Center, but he will be most recently missed as the Senior Associate Director for Facilities. In this role, he oversaw all department on- and off-campus facilities, as well as coordinated all facility projects, security, technology and many additional day-to-day operational aspects of the department.

John could be seen early in the morning working out in the pool or the exercise room. But, he may recently be best remembered as the one who accidently struck former Governor Sonny Purdue with a racquetball racquet during a friendly game which required a few stiches for the Governor.

In 1980, John organized the first annual “van stuff ” with 73 Georgia State students stuffed into a 1970 Dodge van.

It is difficult to sum up such a long and rewarding career or to list the many accomplishments a single person can contribute over so many years. But John Krafka will always be known as the big guy at the rec center who one moment may be chatting with our student employees and the next serving one of the University administrators or government officials.

How do I get into the SRC? Students, bring your Panther card to the Service Counter and sign a waiver. It’s that easy. Faculty and Staff, bring your Panther card to the Service Counter. Choose a form of membership payment (cash, Panther cash, check, payroll deduction) and sign a waiver.

How do I find out about policies and procedures?

How do I get a locker?

A limited number of lockers will be available starting at 6 a.m. on Monday, January 9, 2012. Go to the Equipment Issue Desk on the lower level.

When can I renew my locker for Summer semester?

Renew locker rentals April 9-May 1. If you do not renew your locker, you must clean it out by May 1! All items not retrieved 14 days after May 1 will be donated to charity.

What are the age requirements for children using the SRC? Children age 7 and under are allowed only in the leisure pool.

Children 8-15 may use other areas of the SRC with the exception of the exercise room or free weight area where they must be at least 16. All children 18 and under must be under the direct supervision of their parent or guardian at all times.

How much does it cost to be a member of the SRC? Membership is limited to faculty, staff, students and graduates* of Georgia State University. Students have automatic membership through their student activity fee.

How do I sign up for instructional clinics, aquatic and SCUBA classes?

See the staff at the Service Counter to register for martial arts, dance, aquatic and SCUBA classes, and sports instruction. The Service Counter is located in the lobby.

How do I sign up for Touch the Earth trips and SCUBA trips?

See the staff at the Outdoor Rental Center, accessible via its outside entrance next to the S deck driveways. The center is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Can I bring a guest to the Student Recreation Center?

Yes! You may bring up to three guests per visit. Each guest will be charged $5 and required to sign a waiver. All guests must be accompanied by the member throughout the visit.

Lifeguard Training Includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid and lifeguard training techniques. No absences allowed. During the first class, you must be able to swim 300 yards continuously in the following manner: 100 yards front crawl, 100 yards breast stroke, 100 yards of either front crawl or breast stroke. For breast stroke, you must demonstrate the pull, breathe, kick, and glide sequence. You must also demonstrate: 20 yard front crawl or breast stroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve 10 pound brick; swim 20 yards with brick returning to starting point in a specified time. Books are included.

About the Program The Fitness Center has served the GSU community for over 30 years. The staff members are graduate students in the Exercise Science program. These professionals-in-training provide quality services at affordable prices while helping their clients achieve a healthier lifestyle.

Refund Policy for Personal Training Sessions Once scheduled, there are no refunds for personal training sessions unless there is a documented medical issue that precludes the completion of the training schedule. A maximum of three sessions may be carried forward for one semester. Any sessions not used by the end of the second semester will be forfeited.

This opportunity is for those people who are certified in SCUBA and would like to assist with current SCUBA classes. All assistants in training must participate in the skills review, which will be held on the third night of the listed SCUBA class. If you have not been diving within the year, you must participate in a refresher class, at your own cost, prior to assisting. There is no charge for assisting. Assisters may accrue credit hours to use for class discounts. See specific classes for information.

Deposits and any money paid toward the trip balance are not refundable after the deposit deadline. All payment deadlines must be met or your trip spot will be canceled and your payments forfeited.

SCUBA NAUI SCUBA Diver This entry-level class prepares you for your certification dives as a SCUBA diver. Prerequisites include a 50 foot underwater swim, a 9 minute nonstop swim of 300 yards, a survival float for 10 minutes and a snorkel 440 yards without stopping (conducted the first night of class). Swim suits, note-taking materials, towels, a container for contacts and a lock for a locker must be brought to the first class. The SCUBA diver candidate supplies mask, snorkel, booties, fins and textbooks.

Current GSU students may use GSU snorkeling equipment for this class only. GSU will provide all the scuba equipment for all participants. Non GSU students should purchase snorkel equipment after the first class. A minimum of 7 of the 8 classes must be attended and the first and last classes are mandatory. Open water training dives on the Marathon Florida Keys trip are required for certification.

About the Program Whether you want to learn how to swim, get some exercise or just have fun, you will find something that meets your needs. All of the swim instructors and lifeguards are certified through the American Red Cross. On the first day of swimming lessons the swim instructor will assess each student to make sure they are in the appropriate class.

CHILDREN’S CLASSES CHILDREN’S LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAMS Only children of current Georgia State University students and members of the Student Recreation Center are allowed to register for swimming lessons.

Direct adult supervision is required in the Aquatic Center while children are in the pool or in swimming lessons. Parents or adult supervisor may not leave pool area.You must adhere to pool policies in the Policy and Procedure Guidelines (www.gsu.edu/recreation). Aquatics CLASS DESCRIPTIONS CHILDREN’S CLASSES Parent & Infant For ages 6-18 months; parent must participate in the water with the infant. This class teaches underwater acclimation while parents learn how to give their child a positive experience in the water.

Parent & Toddler For ages 18-36 months; parent must participate in the water with the toddler. Students continue developing water acclimation and safety skills.

Children will have fun in the water while developing swimming readiness.

Preschool I

Learn to Swim Levels 1-3

Level 3 – Stroke Development

3 to 5 year olds who are new to the water will develop comfort in the water, learn water entry, bubble blowing, floating, kicking, underwater exploration and general water safety skills.

These classes are for children 5-15 years old and taught in the leisure pool. Children are taught to swim and improve their level of skill.

Prerequisite: Must be comfortable in lap pool.

Preschool II Prerequisite: Able to demonstrate completion requirements of Preschool 1.

3 to 5 year olds who are very comfortable in the water will learn new skills such as combined arm and leg action on front, treading with support and general water safety skills.

WANTED:

Level 1 – Introduction to Water Skills Must be age 5 the first day of the program in order to participate and comfortable away from parent.

Objectives: Front crawl with breathing to the side, coordinated back crawl, elementary backstroke, scissor and dolphin kick, treading water skills, diving from the side of the pool, and personal safety and rescue skills.

Objectives: Supported floating on front and back, gliding, kicking, and alternating arm and leg action.

Level 2 – Fundamental Aquatic Skills Objectives: Unsupported float, gliding, kicking on front and back without support, combined arm action with kick on front and back, treading water without support, personal safety and rescue skills.

About the Program Sport Club student organizations are made up of individuals that have a desire to compete or participate in a sport outside of varsity athletics or intramurals. Sport Club teams function under student leadership and the monies needed to support them are generated through membership dues, fundraisers, donations and/or university support. A minimum of 10 participants is necessary to keep a class active. Those entering late are responsible for warming up and being prepared for class.

Hatha An introduction to traditional hatha yoga asanas (postures) and pranayama (breath work). The focus is on flexibility, strength and relaxation. Excellent for those who are just starting their own personal practice.

Instructional Clinics CLINIC DESCRIPTIONS SPECIALTY Pilates A challenging class that uses mind-body exercises to stretch and strengthen the muscles. Pilates focuses on the powerhouse/abs, and works the rest of the body through the core connection. All levels are welcome.

M.E.L.T.TM Core and Stretch Join the M.E.L.T. (Myofascial Energetic Length Technique) movement! In this unique class, participants focus on the muscles and nervous system. Using foam rollers and your own body weight, core strength and stretching exercises help create a fit, toned, flexible and pain-free you!

DANCE Ballet Beginning to Intermediate dancers are welcomed. This class focuses on beginning exercises at the barre and in the center. Using bands and balls at the barre will help increase flexibility and strength through dynamic ballet routines.

Ballroom Dance, Beginner Experience an exciting introduction to ballroom dancing with the four most popular dances! Coursework includes: East Coast Swing, the Waltz, the Rumba and the basic Salsa. Both men and women are welcome. No partner necessary.

Belly Dance Belly dance is comprised of the traditional dances of North Africa and the Middle East offering a low impact, moderate intensity cardiovascular workout based on upper and lower body isolations. Participants will focus on all the basic components of Break-dance: Top-rock, Down-rock, Freeze, and Power-move.

As the semester progresses, the class will transition from the style side of break-dance to the power components.

The advanced L.A. style salsa class will cover advanced leading/following technique, 360s/whips, free-styling, body movement, men’s footwork, ladies styling and advanced shine patterns. Participants must have taken an intermediate salsa class at GSU or an off-campus equivalent. No partner is necessary.

Salsa, Beginner Covered in the course are basic steps, footwork and leading/following with a partner. The focus is on having fun and getting comfortable with this popular dance. Both men and women are welcome. No partner is necessary.

Salsa, Intermediate The intermediate L.A. style salsa class will focus on improving dance technique and learning more advanced dance patterns. Participants will also be exposed to basic footwork in other popular Latin dances. Students are expected to be familiar with basic salsa turns and cross body leads, and must have taken a prior salsa class. No partner is necessary.

West African Dance This class will teach an overview of dances from several West African countries. Participants will learn how to isolate body movements and become poly-rhythmic. Participants will also learn and perform a special choreography.

Forfeit Fee Policy

Free Agents

For the following league sports (Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, Softball, and Flag Football), teams will be required to pay a forfeit fee of $50 in the form of a check made out to “Georgia State University.” If the team forfeits a game anytime during the season, the check will be deposited into the Intramural account. If the team does not forfeit, the check will be returned to the team. No team will be placed into the schedule without the check being submitted in advance.

If you would like to play a team sport but do not have enough teammates to form your own team, you can sign up as a free agent and be picked up by another team. As the date of play draws near and registration ends, you will receive an email with information regarding what team you are on, times, location, and rules. To sign up as a free agent, see instructions on how to register.

The entrance is on the Lower Leveloutside entrance behind the SRC. Pay with cash, check or PantherCash. Trips fill early. Register no later than the Tuesday before the trip. Liability waiver will be signed at the time of registration or on the day of the trip.

Receive a full refund if you cancel more than 10 days before the trip date. No refunds will be awarded for cancellations made less than 10 days prior to trip date or for no-shows. If the coordinator cancels a trip for any reason, you may receive a full refund or credit voucher for a future trip.

Cost Cost categories are as follows: current GSU students/GSU faculty, staff and graduates/others.

About the Program Our outdoor recreation program offers a wide variety of experiences designed for all skill levels lead by a team of experienced volunteer trip leaders. In most cases, we provide equipment, transportation, leadership and handle all logistical planning. Unless stated, absolutely no prior experience is required.

These programs are open to Georgia State students, faculty and staff and graduates who are members of the SRC. Student are given first priority on all trips. Guests are welcomed on a space-available basis. Minimum age to participate is 16 unless otherwise specified. A moderate level of fitness will allow for a more enjoyable experience.

Course Credit Course credit may be available for some Touch-the-Earth programs.

Experienced Climbing Clinics Those who are experienced, confident and Belay Certified will enjoy taking a Sport Lead Climbing Certification Clinic with us to be Lead Certified to climb on our wall or go outdoors on your own. Climber must be able to comfortably climb a 5.7-5.8 rated climb. In the Advanced Outdoor Climbing Instruction, our trainer will take the experienced, non-green Lead Certified, indoor climber who is ready to start climbing outdoors without relying on others. Course will consist of a short lecture followed by hands-on instruction on anchor building, how to clean a route and safety concerns.

Kayak Roll Clinics & Refresher Get ready for a great whitewater season! Beginners can come and see what it’s like to paddle a kayak and meet the Whitewater Club. Previous graduates of the WW Kayak School can work with Carson and instructors in preparation for the spring refresher trip (April 1). This is a great day hike, but set as an educational introduction to backpacking.

Hike down into Tallulah Gorge and rappel some minor slopes as you make way into the bottom of the gorge. This trip will require getting wet in the river, as well as hiking out of the gorge. This is not for first time hikers.

Enjoying Biodiversity at the Botanical Gardens A local botanist will guide us through the Fuqua Orchid Center at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. Geocache Adventure Trek

Hike the ridgelines of the Smokies along the Roan Mountain Balds area of the Appalachian Trail. Managed by several different agencies, this forested area is a well-kept secret. This weekend trip will require a quick pace through the 20 mile excursion.

Fire up your GPS for a geocaching adventure race weekend across Georgia! Starting in Blue Ridge, the group will make way easterly across the forests and trails pegging as many waypointed caches as possible.

Ultimately, we’ll end the journey all the way on the other side of the state in Clayton for a great dinner before heading home. No GPS needed to attend.

Raft Guide School You can be a river guide! We raft three great rivers that all require varying levels of guiding skill. These exciting rivers are a favorite destination on the Touch the Earth calendar and trained raft guides are always needed through the summer and fall. On this intensive two-day course we will run the rivers, learning guiding skills necessary for the job, reviewing on-river procedures and policies, and practicing rescue/safety skills. Graduates of the course will be placed on the appropriate river with further training if needed. Permission of instructor is required.

Chattooga River Whitewater Raft Expedition Raft down parts of sections III & IV of the wild and scenic Chattooga River.

The Chattooga is the jewel of the south, known for its incredible, natural scenery and its thrilling, natural flowing class II-IV+ whitewater. We’ll drop off the 6ft. high “second ledge,” and run the famous “Bull Sluice” rapid, in addition to many other intense rapids. On Saturday, expedition participants will camp overnight on a pristine beach after a full day on the river and enjoy a premium meal cooked by you. Mountaineering Sampler in the White Mountains: Backpack, Ice Climb, Snowshoe & Maple Syrup

Experience a rugged break trip involving a myriad of mountaineering activities. On this trip we’ll camp out in the White Mountain National Forest and trek our way on foot for a backcountry loop along the ridges. In addition to boots, this trek may involve snowshoes and crampons in cold conditions. On the side we’ll take you for a day of vertical ice climbing with all the gear needed, as well as touring a maple syrup farm in hopes of an early season harvest. The culmination of the trip may surround the chance to summit Mt. Washington depending on the group’s ability and suitable weather. The road trip is a destination in itself with stunning views all the way up the Appalachians.

Join as we hang out around Moab for a week. This is one the nations grandest outdoor capitals. The checklist for your adventure to Moab should include epic mountain biking, rock climbing, hiking in Arches and Canyonlands, and a multi-day rafting trip. Sure, we’ll do that, and more! Camp out in the red sandstone of the Moab desert and just live-it-up. Then, for the culminating event, hop in a raft for a float down the Colorado River on a multi-day whitewater experience as we camp along the river.

KIDS CLIMB Children ages 8-16 may use the Climbing Wall when supervised and belayed by a certified parent, guardian or climbing wall staff.

LEAD CLIMBING Experienced climbers may lead climb routes during normal hours. You must follow the designated lead route which is changed periodically by certified staff. Ask about a Lead Climbing Certification Clinic to certify or challenge out; You must be belay certified for at least six months or prove significant experience. Hang out in the Bouldering Cave

The Bouldering Cave provides challenges to meet the needs of both beginning and experienced rock climbers in a “no ropes” bouldering format.

The Cave has a variety of vertical AND horizontal, overhanging terrain to challenge anyone. It is located in the Student Recreation Center, lower level, across from Racquetball court 4 and adjacent to the Climbing Wall.

The Cave is open during normal Climbing Wall hours. Users are asked to check in with the Climbing Wall attendant and are able to check out shoes.

Rental Policies 1. Rental equipment is available for checkout to current GSU students, faculty and staff. GSU graduates must be members of the Student Recreation Center to enjoy this service! You must present your Panther ID card.

2. A $20 deposit must be left for any reservation. Full payment for equipment must be made when the equipment is picked up.

3. Deposit will be forfeited if reservation is not cancelled by 5 p.m. on scheduled day of pickup.

4. Advance reservations must be made IN PERSON. 5. A Friday-Monday rental is assessed a two-day charge.

6. A $1 per item per day late fee is charged in addition to the daily rental fee. Exception: Bikes are charged $20 per day.

What is the Challenge Program?

The Challenge Program offers people innovative ways to improve their abilities when working with others. This learn-by-doing approach focuses on creative problem solving and effective communication. Join us in a day of fun experiences that will activate inner resources, increase trust and enhance group cohesion.

Each program is tailored to meet the needs of the group.

Our team of facilitators has experience with clubs, office units, social organizations and corporate groups.

Our rustic lodge and outdoor ropes course is located in the Indian Creek Recreation Area off of South Indian Creek Drive. Team building sessions can also be conducted on the GSU campus.

RECREATION AREA The picnic areas, sand volleyball court and tennis courts are available yearround on a first come-first served basis. The area is also home to the Challenge Program ropes course!

INDIAN CREEK SWIMMING POOL Relax with family and friends, schedule a pool party for the kids or sign up for private swim lessons! From Memorial Day through Labor Day you will have access to the large swimming pool and snack bar.
