Cape Lookout Sea Kayaking Join a local paddler for this four-day backcountry expedition at North Carolina’s Outer Banks. We’ll kayak five miles offshore to the remote and roadless islands of Cape Lookout National Seashore. Enjoy remote beaches, spectacular sunsets, watch wild horses and see a vast array of other rare and endangered wildlife. Backcountry experience is recommended and some kayak experience is required. Ocoee Rafting This exciting Class IV whitewater river in Tennessee is the most action packed in the Southeast! Expect to get wet and experience a wild ride as you work as a team. This is a river of constant whitewater intensity, waves and solid fun. Do the standard middle trip (5 miles) or join us for an epic full-day combo trip (upper & middle –10 miles). Includes transportation, leadership, river guides, equipment and lunch. Experience a truly exquisite canoe-camping wilderness experience. Hear the sounds of a loon after dark. Eat freshly-caught walleye with skillet fried potatoes at dinner. Swing in your hammock between two red pines at sunset. This is a relaxing, laid-back voyager experience in the land of 10,000 lakes of northern Minnesota. Launching from Nina Moose Lake, we’ll paddle our way across each lake, 8-20 miles a day, sometimes arduously portaging to the next and spend quality time at night in spectacular backcountry campsites. We’ll also have the occasional layover day at the very best of sites. On the way, see historic Split Rock Lighthouse, towering over Lake Superior and hike part of the Superior Trail to view the falls. A $150 deposit is due June 26. Balance is due July 17. Spend one week exploring the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia. Start the multi-sport week with a whitewater experience down one of the oldest rivers in the world. Next, we will make our way over to Nelson Rocks and summit the top “via feratta.” After a long day of rock climbing we will head into West Virginia where we will spend a day summiting Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah National Park. The final portion of the trip, we’ll be backpacking into the Shenandoah’s and spend the evenings stargazing. Informational Meeting Monday, June 22 at 6 p.m. in Room 215 of the SRC. Focus is on creative problem solving and effective communication. The experience will increase trust and enhance group cohesion. Programs are tailored to meet the needs of the group. Location Sites vary depending the group’s preference. Groups may choose facilities and grounds from our our ropes course at Indian Creek Recreation Area, the downtown campus or off-campus locations. A minimum of a 10 person charge is required but larger or smaller groups are easily accommodated. Sessions may range from two hours to half-day or a full day. Full day cost Up to $35 per GSU student. The new 4,700 square foot lodge is the perfect place for off campus events. Individual rooms or the entire lodge may be reserved by chartered student organizations, faculty/staff departments for University approved meetings and for personal/social events by Recreation members. The lodge has a large meeting room, two breakout rooms, an open lobby reception area with fireplace, decks with seating and a catering kitchen.
