Interior light condition

Devil’s Millhopper is a naturally occurring sinkhole located in Gainesville, Florida. It is 120 ft. deep with exposure to several geological layers of the territory. Several unique fossil remains and shark teeth have been extracted from these layers.

Access to these layers has provided valuable information and understanding about the area’s history. The striated layers also create 3 specific ecological environments. The upper-levels have a sandhill environment consisting of pine tree vegetation and sandy soil.

The intermediate level is the hammocks consisting of moist soil and broadleved

lower height vegetation. The lower level is a swamp environment only sustaining vegetation that persists in constant wet conditions. The canopy provides shade and the drop in height creates a cooler climate than that of the top of the sinkhole. The canopy lighting conditions inspire the light studies addressed in the intervention. Light filtration density is used in collaboration with the program to create appropriate direct or indirect light in the spaces. The roof landscape has carved troughs for engaging with the existing water movement propelled by gravity.

Il Forno reintroduces the historical uses of a community oven to the present residents of the local Vicenza area. It provides a publicly accessible and enclosed oven for the baking and sharing of pre-prepared family recipes. Placed on a slope overlooking Vicenza’s city centre, the oven attracts locals from its placement as the focal point in the project. It is both revealed and hidden behind layers of a glazed facade and wood cladding but its light is constantly glowing against surrounding stone surfaces of columns and load bearing walls.

The oven doubles its use as a central furnace, using heat pipes to transfer exhaust heat into the floor as a radiant heating system for the community dining space directly above it. Extending from this dining space are exterior garden spaces which allow entry directly into it. Further placing the building into its context is a vine roof which acts as a sun shade during the summer at full growth but also allows sunlight to enter the dining space during the winter.

The atrium is an active part of the architecture building. It is a space that welcomes occupants to gather and socialize while outside. The space is outdoors but still maintains an intimate feeling with implied enclosure from the structure. The existing circulation suffers from rigidity which conflict with the intention of the atrium. This intervention engages with the atrium directly and creates an alternative circulation from the atrium to the second floor. The bridge is a ramp wrapped in a porous skin. This skin is a voronoi surface with attractors deriving from a population density analysis of the space. The skin embodies the same outdoor feeling as the atrium with the exposure to light and wind movement but also maintains the implied enclosure in the porous skin.
